I know I look like I'm jumping on this suddenly, but I really think implying ALL shifters are delusional is dangerous (like, legitimately dangerous) for several reasons:

It muddies the water between clinical delusions and odd beliefs. You're allowed to have weird beliefs, but they tend to be treated as delusions if they cause issues. There are specific qualities to delusions that odd beliefs don't have (delusions are steadfast, can be distressing, and have a very omnipotent quality to them) and depending on how they appeared, could be the start of a medical condition like celiac disease. Physical shifting beliefs do not come with these same issues. The reason why we treat delusions is because it is often a warning sign something is wrong, not because their beliefs are odd, and shifters dont naturally have those signs.

There are kids in this community. Children are often weird and goofy as they mature, and a lot go through phases of being special. Some will find the shifter community, some will try to claim they're all sorts of things, and since it's the internet you can't validate their claims. You know how you wouldn't (or at least you shouldn't) armchair diagnose a 12 year old with schizophrenia just because they believe in unicorns? I find it very dangerous to say that p-shifters are all delusional because of that, seeing as how most of us know the community can be composed of younger kids -some may be simply wishful or imaginative, and they shouldn't be told they're mentally ill for that.

Bouncing off of that last point, it could lead to younger kids accidentally invading clinical lycanthropy spaces because they've been told they're delusional, and making a mess of them because they want to learn shifting or think they're lycanthropes when they're not.

It could also lead to them neglecting physical medical conditions they've had. Many times kids may not be aware of or understate medical conditions they may have, and if they appear similar to stereotypes of shifting they may think they're physically shifting when they're not. If someone claims they physically shift their hands so they get bigger, and someone else tells them they're delusional, that could lead to them neglecting the time sensitive immune disorder that allows them to do that. If someone says they're growing hair all over and have anger issues, they could have a tumor causing hypertrichosis and personality changes. Not every physical shifting claim is "impossible".

Like, I'm not against delusional people or people seeking out help, but I think if you're going to blanket label everyone as a clinical lycanthrope in denial, your reasons better be good beyond "they believe in p-shifting", especially since it can be misleading medically.

Violence. Straight up violence.

I reckon Dick would be able to suss out imposters very easily due to the fact that him and Jason still mainly communicate with bird sounds, especially as a form of greetings and reassurance of the other’s presence. And while it might be comparably easy to take someone else’s form, the shapeshifter/magic user would have a much harder time imitating that special kind of language. Or actually I reckon they wouldn’t manage at all.

And Jason is good at bird sounds. Insanely good, to a point where even Dick wouldn’t know the difference between a true talon and Jason if they didn’t have their special call signs.

So even if the imposter knew about the bird sounds, just one wrong or slightly off hoot would be able to tip Dick off that that’s not his owlet.

And that’s enough for him to switch straight to burning fury. Mostly out of the deep seated terror that whatever stole Jason’s face may have hurt him to do so. 🦉

Different Styles of Shifting

Since I've noticed that there are a few different styles of shifting out there (and since I've been trying to categorize my own shifting) I've decided to make a list of all the types I've seen out there. More will be added if I find any, but I think this is all there is?

1. Psychosomatic Changes: These are people who have changes that are mild and fairly well-explained scientifically. Increased energy, an inability to walk, heightened senses and a boost in strength are all possible for those experiencing these changes, and for the animal identified this often comes with cravings, longings to go wild, and some instincts of their species.

Unlike other forms of shifting, humans are fairly prone to this sort of change. If you've ever tried those "spell to become a werewolf" videos and felt effects (but no transformation), then you've had this type of "shift".

2. Berserkers and Human-Beasts: Changes here are more extreme than those found in psychosomatic areas, and are arguably no longer psychosomatic. These shifters often shift under pressure or the influence of spirit posession, seeing it as either a defensive mechanism or spiritual gift. The mildest of partial shifts might occur under these circumstances - growing fur, partially shifting bones, vocalizations and stance changes.

Examples of these shifters include berserkers, and some shamanic individuals.

3. Magical Influence: Those using magical influences may give off the appearance of a physical shift, without having shifted. These individuals often cast an illusion (in some cases called glamour) around their physical body so that they appear to be nonhuman. In some cases this form may be visible to only a select few; in others everyone may be able to see the animal form as if it were a physical entity.

Examples of this shift include sorcerers, witches and some claims of fae or natural animal shapeshifters (The Church Lady Monster).

4. Spirit Projectors and Bilocators: A spiritual type of shift that affects and/or involves the physical body, or materializes a new body for the shifter to use. These shifters may cross the veil to engage in fights against evil or other protective matters, or materialize a physical body to roam the Earth in. Unlike astral projection, the human body is often instrumental in shifting - moving it can displace a shifter, and a shifter may need to place it out of danger before a shift.

Examples of shifters like this include the faoladh, or the benadanti.

5. Standard Animal or Man-Beast: What most people think of when they hear of a physical shapeshifter. Changes here are fairly evident and indicate a noticable physical difference. Shifting may be painful, and difficult to initiate or control. Most shifters of this sort become an existent animal, although some may claim to have a bipedal, man-beast form. Despite being glamorized, experienced shifters are fairly rare in the community, and don't appear too often.

Examples of this shift include historical werewolves and some shamanic individuals, as well as claimed modern day sightings (such as the Torrance Werewolf) of bipedal wolf and cat men.

Not all shifters will be able to shift in all these ways, however I don't think shifting styles are exclusive. If you know one you could potentially develop the ability to shift in other ways.

So we know Halsin obviously prefers terrestrial animals, but given the choice between flying animals and aquatic ones, which do you think he prefers?

Halsin loves all creatures of Toril, big and small, maggots included.😌

But something in my heart says he prefers flying animals if made to pick between those two options - partially for his fondness for ducks, but there were also just so many birds in the Grove and I feel like he had more chances to be very closely in their company more consistently. He would have loved those Ancient Giant Eagles on top of the Rosymorn Monastery.

I do feel like he would be fascinated by the astronomical biodiversity present in bodies of water - that would, at the very least, pique the academic interest. He strikes me as a swamp, pond and wave pool type of person.
