Honestly, the funniest consequence of the contemporary revival of classic rubber hose animation is how the genre's tropes keep bleeding out into broader popular culture entirely bereft of context, and now any female character who's supposed to have gone the dangerous kind of crazy is liable to inexplicably develop a Brooklyn accent.

(Gotta use my main for this-)
So I'm currently designing a character that has a 1930s style, similar to rubberhose animation. The character in question is a cat, due to how many cartoon cats are shared in the cartoon world (Tom, Felix, Mimicat, Cartoon Cat)
However, the current design for my character Doppleganger, looks too much like one of the cats, Mimicat, and not like an amalgam of all of the cat characters, which is what they represent.
I gotten attached to the current design, and need ideas on how I could fix it so it doesn't really feel like I'm ripping off a character
Any advice?
Cracks knuckles
First off, if you want to do a 1930's animation style, there are PLENTY of guides and references to achieve that style. And if you're worried it won't look good compared to your other characters, shows like Centaurworld or movies like Spiderverse do the clashing art style pretty well.
But when it comes to your character, it all about appeal and shapes.
For starters, I traced an outline of the general shapes for Doppelganger's design.
To make him stand out, I played with his proportions to not only give it that 1930's look, but to also add appeal to him.
Appeal is very important when making your characters stand out, especially if they're all anthro fox creatures.
Now, as for him looking similar to Mimicat... yeah I can see the resemblance. But since you also said this character is an amalgamation of them, why not add other features from those characters to make him stand out?
I gave Doppelganger gloves, a lighter stomach, a different color on the tip of his tail, and some rounder shapes to give it that look.
That way, Doppelganger looks more unique and like his own character, with still the general rubber-hose vibe.
Keep in mind, I am no expert. But if you want further help, there's plenty of tutorials to get you started:
Here is a character design tips video by BaM Animation
Here is a tutorial to draw 4 different body types in the rubber hose style by Julina Mae Animations
Here is a tutorial on how to animate like Cuphead/Rubber Hose style by Scribble Kibble
Hope this helps!
