there's a bigass fucking void where the username of the reblogged blog should go. why? for what purpose?

it's bc anthonyampersand reblogged it from halftype, the last commenter. the fact is that if you reblog a post from anyone who appears in the post, whether it be OP or another commenter, or even yourself, it just does not show the username. it is quite possibly the biggest fuck you i can imagine to everyone complaining about losing prev tags, bc now you can't even tell who prev even was.

Apparently tumblr has decided to give us note previews at the bottom of posts now and I hate it. Partly it’s annoying; if I wanted to see notes and replies I would click on the notes! The button’s right there! It takes an extra 0.2 second! This just clutters up the post layout without adding any functionality. But it’s also terrifying, because it is once again trying to make tumblr like other social media.

It’s trying to say “here is this Cool Thing (in our algorithmically-informed view). You don’t think/know yet you want to look at this Cool Thing but we know you want to look at this Cool Thing, because we know better than you what you should be looking at.”

See, this note is not the most recent note by a long shot, but it is by dduane/Diane Duane, who has been on tumblr a long time, pops up fairly regularly in the Star Trek fandom, and has written actual official Trek novels (among many other things). She’s probably the most “famous” note on this post (or what passes for famous/popular on tumblr). I’m guessing it’s not a coincidence hers was the note featured.

A quick look through the “tumblr update” tag shows people are also having issues like seeing terf comments previewed even though that’s the sort of content they would never willingly look at.

Could I ask what difference between transgender and transsexual is? I ask this as a trans person who wants to start using the term "transsexual," but I'm not sure if it denotes anything beyond what I've been using the term "transgender" for (i.e. not aligning with my birth sex/gender identity).

I like transsexual better as it's what our trans-cestors used, and it's a word that is so much "punchier" than transgender is, and I don't feel the same kind of "weird" when the label is applied to me. I'm just worried that these are "fake" reasons or something. Thank you, and sorry!

Honestly, I think there are more similarities between "transsexual" and "transgender" as transsexual as a term was introduced first, and then transgender replaced it

Transsexual has had a history of being used for people who were medically transitioning during a point where transness was heavily pathologized and medicalized... but I personally don't think that cis people should be allowed to sully words like that, and I really don't think that we need to stick by those ridged rules. Isn't the reason transness is so "scary" because we break those "ridged rules" so often? But I digress.

I think some people have different outlooks on their transition, and that's where the transsexual/transgender labels can help. For me, I identify as transsexual because I think it most accurately describes my relationship with my transition.

The most important thing is to not force people in or out of labels they identify with - which is why I want anybody who wants to ID as transsexual do so. So many people ID as such - trans elders, young trans people, people who are medically transitioning, people who aren't. I think a lot of why people are attracted to this word is because of political reclamation, as in reclaiming the word for political reasons, to show the word how viscerally human you are. That's part of the reason I decided to use it, at least.

I really miss him too! I think he'd fit really well with a thought that I just can't shake this week, I'm so wrapped up in the idea of backshots and then taking pictures on a polaroid camera. To the point that I got a fucking polaroid camera this week

I've talked a fair amount about how byan has been bullied and hurt by teachers in the past (& how they'd hit their limit and seek drastic revenge, in some cases), but I've never really talked much about how byan has also bullied and outright tormented teachers for themself... like yeah, it's definitely because they don't trust teachers or authority figures in general due to their past experiences, but that doesn't mean that their 9th grade math teacher deserved to feel afraid for his own safety or that their 10th grade biology teacher should have been so stressed that she retired early. byan has been done dirty by a lot of people in their life but they've also been a genuine menace to others who gave them no real reason to be, and they have taken enjoyment in it in a lot of cases.

I think it’s very interesting how Renfield/mental health in general are treated. Today we have “he is usually such a well-behaved man, and except his violent fits” which I don’t think is an attitude you’d really see toward Renfield’s particular behavior today. There’s a definite element of infantilization (see: the way they talk about the visitor not taking offense because it’s a madhouse, lots of general little quirks in phrasing) but I think that someone in a psychiatric institution today who attacks an administrator with a knife and draws blood doesn’t get nearly as much understanding, no matter how little they’re in control of their actions. I think today that’d get you a longterm label of being trouble, definitely not someone staff referred to as well-behaved no matter how isolated the incident
