Summary: “Oh, God,” he says, his voice almost unintelligible — it sounds like gears grating together, and his right hand presses hard against his throat. His panic over the state of his right eye is dwarfed by the panic that rises in him at the feeling of metal against his throat — metal, instead of the callused skin of his palm. The vitals monitor starts to chime shrilly, his heart rate climbing, as Tony attempts to burrow the fingers of his left hand underneath the panels of the suit gauntlet covering his right arm. Blood streams down the gauntlet as he frantically attempts to wrench his right arm free, the skin and delicate muscles of his fingers shredded by the metal panels. Tony is so intent on removing the gauntlet, sweat beading on his forehead, his teeth gritted together, the whites of his eyes flashing as his eyes roll madly — that he doesn’t feel the pinch of the needle as it is inserted into the base of his neck, the plunger of the syringe is depressed, and Tony falls limply back against the bed.

I've totally thought of anti-hero as a Clover song! (and a Julien song to a lesser extent) Another good lyric for Clover in general is "I feel like everybody is a sexy baby and I'm a monster on the hill" which fits how her sister invites comparison from clover's boyfriends. and clover feeling monstrous & isolated when fat, also relevant

as you point out Clover is VERY prone to lying to herself and living in denial. at the same time, Clover's also one to self-blame and catastrophize when things finally break. she's too proud and fearful to say any of these lyrics out loud, but they capture her self-punishing approach to guilt and imperfections.

The song is half self-aware, half low self-esteem. The harshest thoughts we have about ourselves are not the only source of info. especially when there's so much stuff in canon and in your fic that are beyond Clover's control. And moments of her weakness have been influenced or even preyed on by others' choices too.

She's advised by her most precious mentor (Rose) to marry this guy, because rose believes clover should be like her. This puts Clover in a bind when the kingdom turns on her for leaving them, because she has to choose between two opposing (and valued) peer pressures. It's no shock the values she was raised on won out, but no wonder she's in so much conflict about these competing desires and fears. a huge theme for Julien too

back to the song:

"When my depression works the graveyard shift, all the people I've ghosted stand there in the room" fits the dilemma Clover faces after leaving her people!! it did not bring her the peace she was looking for.

"I wake up screaming from dreaming one day I'll watch as you're leaving" literally describes when Clover woke up screaming from that cruel nightmare jarsh sent to her in the cult arc.

"and life will lose all its meaning for the last time" fits how she lost Rose; she already knows what it's like to lose everything. if she lost Julien et al, it would not just be bad, it would be history nightmarishly repeating itself.

Clover's helplessness and powerlessness when Rose died is core to why she even wants power. It's not bad to want power, or even be power-hungry (it has positives and negatives). The reason she keeps circling back to it though, is that even after learning that being a hero isn't about physical strength, she still knows exactly what it's like to be powerless, and what the horrible consequences are. Experience has been a powerful and painful teacher!

I think it makes sense psychologically that Clover fears everyone's deaths so badly that she'd actually run away from protecting them. (Julien does this too in exiled.) There's a difference between knowing something is important vs realizing it has the power to destroy you. before koto she is protective and dedicated, but after, she feels a sudden impulsive need to completely detach. it's self-preservation but it's also self-destructive

Recent surges of XY fanart is reminding me about how a part of me gets sad whenever Diantha + Augustine + Lysandre are presented as a trio when to me Malva should be the fourth to the quartet, and like, of course I get why (her relevance isn't really apparent until the postgame and the other three are the 'faces' of the region, french flag colours and so on and so forth) so I have no ill will towards that sort of thing but

It does feed into this sort of meta-analysis turned headcanon for me where no matter how much publicity she has she's never really in the spotlight, despite her position and her presence she's relegated to a secondary pedestal, excluded from ever really sitting at the top. you might say she's got a complex about it

#and again like no grudges against real people #but the way fans react to things peppers so much of what i imagine characters deal with in universe as public figures #forced rivalries and high pressure situations where supporters can turn on you on a dime if you're not performing to their standards #like don't get me started on d/iantha and c/ynthia in a world that constantly pits them against each other and how that would weigh on them

Au where transfem Jiang Cheng gets her egg cracked by drag queen Wei Wuxian dressing her up for shits and giggles as a prank

Imagining this in an au where everyone is like late 30s- early 40s -- cssr and wcz are alive (and they do crazy genderplay shit every day well into their 60s ok) so JC and jyl and wwx are just close childhood friends. wwx came out as bi in his teens to very supportive parents, but gets looked at weird by the mildly homophobic Jiang parents after that, leading to wwx and jc spending most of their time together skipping school and slipping out by paying NHS to cover for them.

Eventually Jc makes it thru high school and uni as a business major and makes it up the company ranks. her parents are happy that she's "normal" unlike wwx , who majored in theater and became a drag queen during uni, but JC still feels distinctly unfulfilled in typical JC fashion. Wwx and JC end up losing contact for a while just bc of adult things, wwx and lwj get married, JC becomes increasingly a workaholic, jyl has jl, y'know. Eventually wwx finds out JC is going to be in NYC at the same time he's doing a show so he invites her over for drinks to catch up and she doesn't rlly have a reason to decline (jyl has been to all of wwx's plays and always gushes to JC about how amazing they are and how she should come sometimes).

JC doesn't realize it's a drag show at first until she gets there and is kind of ruffled about it at first but stays out of pride and bc she doesn't betray promises. Wwx invites her backstage after and they have a little banter as he dresses down ("Wow, Jiang Cheng! Look at you, uni really paid off huh? All dressed up in that fancy suit for lil ol me?!" "And I see uni made you... A transvestite..?" "Yep!!!") and then they have a few drinks. While tipsy JC gets dared into getting a drag makeover courtesy of wwx, on honor of her manhood (hahaha).

When she gets all dressed up and looks in the mirror she gets all quiet and feels like the world stops. It's like there's no wwx, no dressing room, no show. Just her and a bold red lip and mascara and a long silky black wig and the realization that for all those times she'd stared in the mirror hating herself before she'd wanted to see this. This face staring back at her.

Wwx gets kind of nervous like 'uhh JC I can take it off if you're not cool with it haha, it's ok if you're not like even tho lwj doesn't mind the crossdressing he's not really into the heavy makeup and such so I get it and' and JC is like. I have to leave immediately.

And so begins a long overdue process of JC trying to find herself after always just finding what other people wanted of her

but THANK YOU!!! i knew from the jump for isaloops that isa wasnt gonna get big, but it took me a while to nail how exactly to justify that. since fic planning is a ways out i suppose i can in fact say it on main so. i needed something of impact to happen. so sif flails under distress under the strain of wishcraft and catches isa in the face! there will. be other moments in isaloops that foreshadow lip scar.

its a lip scar because isa is the one in the party who talks about stuff. he supports his friends and calms them. but in the au the point is that he doesnt open up, he doesnt talk about his issues! so!!! wound to the mouth!!! symbolism and all that jazz!!!
