Netflix Renewal Numbers

So, back in 2019 I got curious about Netflix Originals renewal rates and I made a chart for various genres of show and how many seasons they averaged at Netflix.

Dramas (which includes fantasy, mystery, thriller, etc.) in 2019 averaged 1.81 seasons per show, whereas in 2023 they only average 1.5 seasons. There are only 8 dramas (out of the 149 released by Netflix) that have ever had more than 3 seasons (currently released). Those are- House of Cards, Orange Is the New Black, 13 Reasons Why, Ozark, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Stranger Things, The Crown, and Virgin River. There are only 7 more shows classified as dramas that are currently renewed for a 4th season. Those are- The Umbrella Academy, The Witcher, Outer Banks, Sweet Magnolias, Blood & Water, Bridgerton, and Ginny & Georgia. Seeing as both Bridgerton and Ginny & Georgia were renewed for their 3rd and 4th seasons at the same time, that could still change if the 3rd seasons underperform (to be clear, Queen Charlotte is being counted as a standalone project, not a Bridgerton season).

Comedies (which include "dramadies") in 2019 averaged the exact same renewal rate as the dramas, with 1.81 seasons on average per show. In 2023, they average 1.8 seasons per show, so basically the same. There are only 9 comedies that have ever had more than 3 seasons. Those are- Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Grace and Frankie, The Ranch, Dear White People, Atypical, On My Block, Sex Education, Never Have I Ever, and The Upshaws. There is only 1 show currently renewed for a 4th season. That is- Emily in Paris.

Netflix has canceled or ended 91 dramas after 1 season (does include miniseries only pitched for 1 season). Netflix has canceled or ended 44 comedies after 1 season.

So... do with that information what you will. For me, personally, I'm just sick of Netflix starting stories it appears to have no intention of finishing unless they become massive worldwide hits.

[note that in 2019, Marvel shows were classified in their own genre and not included in the "Drama" numbers, but were since re-classified under "Drama" and included in the 2023 numbers].

[note that Fuller House, which had 5 seasons, was re-classified from "Comedy" to "Kids & Family" between 2019 & 2023 and is not reflected in the 2023 numbers].

[note the categories not classified as either a Drama or Comedy are- Kids & Family, Animation, Anime, Non-English Language Scripted, Docuseries, Reality, Variety, Continuations (shows picked up, but not originally produced by Netflix), Specials, Episodic, Regional Original Programming (there are only 3 shows in this category that apply to the numbers and none of them acquired a 4th season), and Co-Productions].

[note that shows like Riverdale, which were not produced or originally distributed by Netflix, but were slapped with the "Netflix Original" when distributed in some countries are not included in these numbers].

[note that these numbers only reflect English Language shows classified as "Drama" or "Comedy" produced from beginning to end by Netflix].

**Numbers are sourced from Wikipedia & also I did all the math myself, so while I believe they are pretty accurate (as of the posting date), there is room for error.

TLDR: Netflix cancels a lot of their original programming, and cancels dramas at a particularly high rate.

I spent 7:00 AM to 5:25 PM watching the new season of Sweet Magnolias after rewatching both season 1 and season 2 in a week and a half and they really wasted half the show eps on Helen's milquetoast man {who should've stayed gone gone after their fight at the end of Season 1} but nope lets bring him back and waste all the scenes I could've got with her and the MAN who actually pulled her out of that funk to begin with. And who took her to her appointments post losing the baby. E/H falling in love was like the best thing about season 2.

And the more they dragged Season 3 out with milquetoast the more pissy I got to the point of me screaming at my tv. {I don't even want to talk about the fact they gave milquetoast half of that book plot with Helen looking after Cece when her parents moved}. Like I know what the writers were trying to do/prove but they could've cut that down to maybe the first 2 episodes instead of dragging it out until the end of ep 6. In fact they should've one and done'd it the moment E/H had the conversation in episode 2. It would have saved me so much grief and upset.

Honestly minus the slight tweaks they did to the original book plot. And the fact had I not read that and known ahead of time all that book involves back in 2020 I would have been pissed pissed but now I got to sit around to see if this show is in jeopardy because of all that's going on right now with strikes and the last little bit of the episode with E/H staring at each other {the 5 measly minutes that they did get at the vow renewal} they had to pan away from them and to fucking C*l and M*ddie and cut to credits.

I spent half the day saying ew I hate this or I'd like to move on. And now I'm in my feelings and have to vent. And I'm heavily debating a reread of book 3 just to feel something. Because the bittersweetness/end of Season 3 has only added onto the fact that I spent all day sobbing waiting for things to work out.

Another thing I was not prepared for in the last season of Derry Girls was the medium episode and Grandda Joe being insistent on the shaving razor his late wife hid, and then Carlos saying the thing about the red box under the water. AND THEN Grandda Joe getting this feeling of looking under the sink and finding it and laughing to himself and saying "Thanks, love" all while "Black is the Colour" was playing in the background. See, this is the kind of thing that’s easier to answer when you watch shows as they air...ugh! All right. I can try this, at least w/ shows that aired this year.

Blood & Treasure: 2x04, 2x06 and 2x08 (Into the Forbidden Zone; Mystery at Poison Island; The Lost City of Sana)

The Amazing Race: season 33 finale

Abbot Elementary: 1x11 (Desking); 2x06 (Candy Zombies); 2x10 (Holiday Hookah), probably more tbh

8. First fandom of the year

It’s a tie between “holy crap I love The Amazing Race” and revisiting Blood & Treasure season 1, which occurred near simultaneously with my random love for the original video game series Uncharted.

(Honestly, watching husband play Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End for most of January, while I sat next to him alternating between reading and paying attention, was one of the coziest times in my life.)

9. Best new fandom discovery of the year

Oh, for sure Abbott; it is not often that a comedy can make me care about the characters and think about them beyond the weekly episode.

Unless we count the fact that this is the first time I actually dove into the fandom aspect of Jurassic World, in which case: that by a mile.

10. Biggest fandom disappointment of the year

A) I honestly can’t think of any bummers except the Blood & Treasure S2 DVD being expensive as hell and having no extras beyond a 2-minute gag reel (that they released online anyway). Which, considering it was locked up on a streaming service while airing, I AM grateful it’s on DVD at all + I do love a gag reel, but...season 1 had deleted scenes on every episode and I really wanted more of those, ideally plus some BTS stuff about filming since this is one of the few shows where I care about every little aspect of the production.

A-2) If I’m being really picky, I am disappointed that the one shippy thing I didn’t get in season 2 was any sort of pillow talk or other snuggling in bed. I got everything else under the sun I could possibly want, sure, but not my favorite.

B) and I am of course generally disappointed in HBO Max for being a little bitch and disappearing so much of its content. None of it was relevant to me and this is the last streaming service I would ever pay for, but that sets a scary precedent.

C) I just learned that DCC: Making the Team has officially been canceled after 16 seasons, the last one covering the 2021 season. Aww. Guess I only have 1.5 left unseen. (supposedly the organization is “in the process of negotiating a new partnership and [looks] forward to continuing to feature the DCC on a new platform,” whatever that means, but that was in April.)

11. Biggest squee moments of the year

I should honestly make a new post about this, because my brain is mostly a blur of ideas re: --

* The nine thousand seven hundred and forty-four squee-worthy Claire/Owen and general found-family bits in Dominion

* every episode of Blood & Treasure S2 (I really do need to make a new post to count all the shippy bits up -- kisses and I-thought-you-were-dead moments and two other near-death experiences and reunion hugs and, and, !!!)

* THE KISS (Severance)

* Valor giving me exactly what I came for in terms of intense makeout sessions and two gunshot wounds

* too many family and/or shippy bits to count (still) in Disenchanted -- here are some of them -- and also a very unexpected yet soul-fulfilling “I used to be good at things :( “

(sidebar, I am still a MESS OF FEELINGS about the lyric I thought I’d found a place where I could makes things better / but all I did was change where I would fail. GISELLE!!)

* post-danger bed snuggles (NCIS: LA) and adoption joy!

...huh, that is actually more squee than I remember, good to know.

12. Favorite main character of the year (see #1) 13. Favorite villain of the year

"The Great Khan” on Blood & Treasure :)

14. Favorite m/f ship of the year

Danny/Lexi. Not even Claire & Owen took me to the stars like them.

15. Favorite f/f ship of the year

Normally I got nothin’ here but I would endorse the idea of Violet / Lexi in their younger days

16. Favorite m/m ship of the year

I got nothin’. The Klaine Stands Alone.

17. Your fictional true love of the year

Guess. (although, honestly, there were some fantastic dudes in books who could compete in this category too. In fact, here are my four favorites --

Honestly I’m still pretty stunned I found anything to enjoy about Severance and Mythic Quest at all.

Also, Hit the Floor is definitely not something I’d have been able to stand before I fell in love w/ the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders show. The fact that it is continuing to hold my interest despite having zero ships to root for and a maximum of two arguably handsome men is truly something.

Okay so watching Sweet Magnolias and I am having thoughts…

1, I am definitely not watching it on a platform separate from Netflix so as not to support the decision to keep she who shall not be named on the show.

2, my love for Helen grows stronger every second she is on screen. She is just such a class act.

3, I’m not done with the season yet but if Mr Townsend is also Isacc’s dad then I will scream

4, Dana Sue is not a good mom, no I will not change my mind. She upsets me in every single episode.

4, Howie is a king.

6, it was refreshing for Maddie to have more flaws this season. That woman was too dang perfect to be real. Watching her and the boys this season struggle was so good.

Hello lovely humans!

I’ve recently hit the 500 follower milestone and want to celebrate with another challenge! This time, dark fics are welcome!

I have a lot of prompts here and what doesn’t get used will probably be put aside for a future challenge. I like to make sure there is a wide array of prompts to be chosen from and tend to go overboard. Whoops.

The Rules:

1. Use the hashtag #JBBNN500

2. Dark fics are welcome - Just be sure to utilize trigger warnings and indicate that it is a dark fic.

3. Even if you aren’t writing a dark fic, use trigger warnings if the content warrants it. If you write something that has heavier themes, like those that delve into mental health topics, be sure to label it appropriately.

My Favorite Movies & TV Shows About Girl Best Friends

My last post was a little on the negative side. I mostly want to keep my page positive and lighthearted. So, I’m changing it up with this list. I’m taking a break away from Marvel and Disney for now.

There are a lot of great shows and movies about friendship or that feature best friends. I haven’t seen them all. Here’s a list of tv shows and movies that focus on female friendship that I’ve seen and loved. I’ve listed them in order of least to most favorite, but I honestly love them all.

10. Alexa and Katie

Alexa and Katie’s friendship is pretty awesome. Alexa has cancer and Katie is always by her side supporting her through all the ups and downs. She shaved her head without hesitation just to show Alexa she wasn’t alone. It’s great that Alexa isn’t defined by her illness. Alexa is a schemer and full of life. And Katie isn’t boring either. She’s quirky and silly and has her own life too.

9. H2O: Just Add Water

Every summer, my friends, sisters, and I would swim around the swimming pool pretending to be mermaids. This show was that come to life. It’s about three friends who are accidentally transformed into mermaids. On land they are your typical teenage girls, but just add water and they are mermaids. Not only that, they also have powers to manipulate water and elements of the weather. They must keep it all a secret while navigating their way through high school. Of course, there are lots of boys and lots of fun.

8. A League of Their Own

This movie is a classic. I first saw it when I was about 6 and I loved it! It showed girls tearing it up playing a boy’s sport, but we also saw how they were still women. Not women trying to be men. Women with husbands at war, women with children, women who just wanted to go out dancing with their girlfriends. We saw a great sister relationship between Dotty and Kit, and we saw all these awesome women work together, support each other, and ultimately accomplish a piece of history.

7. Now and Then

This was essentially a girl version of Stand By Me. It wasn’t nearly as poignant, but that didn’t stop me from loving it. My sisters and I all wanted to be like Roberta (Christina Ricci), but maybe I’m more like Sam (Gaby Hoffmann). We see the girls deal with boys, body changes, divorce, parental neglect, and death. One thing I liked that Stand By Me didn’t have was the chance to see the women the girls grew up to be (and which movie stars portrayed them). We see even though they’ve gone their own ways, they’re still there for each other.

6. Dollface

Dollface is not a perfect show. At times I found myself really disagreeing with some of the characters’ advice and thought it came across a bit shallow. Or maybe I really am just like Jules (Kat Dennings). But I love the creativity, the quirkiness, the humor. I love that it’s about learning how to be a girl friend when maybe you’re more of a lone wolf. I love that it has two Asian-American lead characters who aren’t related (Brenda Song and Shay Mitchell). And it sure ended its first season with a bang. I’m ready for season 2 if it ever comes around.

5. Ready or Not

This show was a true gem. Ready or Not was a 90’s Canadian show about two best friends, Amanda and Busy, who are completely opposite of each other, and all the trials and lessons they face as they grow up. It wasn’t afraid to touch on some serious subjects. It covered things like peer pressure, divorce, slut shaming, homosexuality, sexual predators, anti-semitism, and more. A lot of the issues are still relevant today. Both characters are fully developed rather than just stereotypes. They have their own strengths, flaws, and set of family problems. Although their pairing seems unlikely, their enduring friendship is really heartwarming.

4. Parks and Recreation

This isn’t really a show about girl friendship, but it has one of the best pair of girl friends in TV ever — Leslie Knope and Ann Perkins. It also gave us Galentine’s Day, a fictional holiday that girlfriends now celebrate in real life. I had to include it.

3. The Baby-Sitters Club

The Baby-Sitters Club was so huge in the 80’s and 90’s. There were books, a tv show, a movie, dolls and more dolls. Thanks to Netflix, there’s a whole new updated version for new generations to fall in love with. It’s a perfect blend of nostalgia and relevance. This newer version has altered the races of a few characters, so now there’s a girl of just about every personality type and race that you can identify with.

2. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants consisted of two feature films and four (now five?) books. It follows each girl on their own story and then interweaves them as we see them come together to support each other. It has some of my favorite binge watching material: best friends, romance, and traveling the world.

1. Sweet Magnolias

I found myself binge watching this series on Netflix during the pandemic, and I loved it. The first couple of episodes started out slow, but I quickly became invested in the three southern gals and their families. It’s a nice, comfy show that takes place in a nice, comfy little town. These women are grown with their own families, careers, and adult problems. We see them deal with divorce (this time as a divorcee), childlessness, business endeavors, and health scares. We also see how it all affects their children as well. It’s a great show if you’re past your teen years and want some adult friendships (that aren’t about being naughty).
