For anyone keeping track (no one), I have started watching the first Avengers film (MCU not the 60s TV show) but only while eating lunch so it's gonna take a while. So far Nick Fury has been assembling the Avengers (the film was initially released in the UK as Avengers Assemble - because of that 60s TV show - but it's not called that on D+ so I'm calling it what the Americans called it, just FYI) even though there's not yet anything for them to avenge as That Suit Guy (j/k I know his name too!!) isn't dead yet, and now they're on THE FUCKING VALIANT FROM DR WHO and I assume we're gonna continue assembling for a while as they're not all there yet.
MEANWHILE Loki (who is neither an alligator nor a woman in this???) is in a SECRET UNDERGROUND LAIR with a bunch of his stans who are... idk something technobabble that involves irridium and anti-protons. He is there looking for the tesseract on behalf of ???? who I know will be revealed 47 films from now as... no, wait, it wasn't, was it? That was just announced on a website or something? So it could be LITERALLY ANYONE. The Avengers (in-progress) also seem to be after that thing, but I have already forgotten why everyone is wanting it, assuming it was mentioned (it probably was).
Thor hasn't shown up yet, but Arrows Hawkeye is working as a Loki Stan and there's Steve Rogers and THE HULK and The Only Woman One, whose power is that she's a Cold War assassin (??) and I think this one is the film where she gets called a cunt (!) and honestly I am not sure which of the men she's getting officially shipped with, I think Arrows Hawkeye though? Fairly sure, as the alternative is that a man and a woman like each other as people but not in a lusty way, which would never happen obviously. (Hey I may ship mostly het* pairings but I don't always like it!)
Based on the Valiant (if u don't know who she is get da hell out of here!) I am guessing that the film ends with Loki dying in Thor's arms romantically but then I remembered that I know it can't because one of Loki got kidnapped from... either the end of this film or the start of the next one or POSSIBLY just from a later film's time-travel bit (???) but like... maybe they've edited this film secretly and I was right after all? But nobody else has watched it on Disney + recently so nobody knows yet? IT COULD HAPPEN.
Not sure what to make of this film so far, a lot's been going on yet also not much has been going on, and the one I like best so far (Suit Guy) is gonna die (NOT EVEN IN THOR'S ARMS ROMANTICALLY) and god Iron Man really hasn't aged well now that we have that one tech billionaire being a twat in public all the time to remind us what such people tend to be like. WHERE IS THOR????
*I say het but everyone in everything is bisexual, I know this because I thought of it and announced it on tumblr and will now say "I don't make the rules" to make it an objective FACT. I don't make the rules!!!
#the avengers (mcu edition not the 60s one)#(though if u close one eye and tilt ur head the black widow looks a wee bit like emma peel maybe?)#i like to think the lair of loki stans exists after this to post angrily on social media about how actually he did nothing wrong etc etc#let me know if loki's just working from a subway station that's still in use in this that'd be hilarious he'd be so annoyed by it all#torn on the tortured-by-thanos issue so far he does look messy but he might just have the flu and didn't want to back out#a lot of people are depending on him to jumpstart a movie superhero franchise he can't just take the day off can he#if loki took care of himself thor would be LITERALLY UNEMPLOYED how could he? how could YOU?#(the 'god of thunder' thing isn't a job he doesn't get paid for it so it's just a hobby)#(he doesn't even monetise that hobby! you think iron man would give you storms for free? EXACTLY. he'd have a patreon AT LEAST)#(“if you enjoyed this torrential rain pls tip me on ko-fi which is not pronounced like you think it is because it's a really BAD pun”)#mcu tag i guess#and whatever the fuck my loki character tag was#like i said i really do need to categorise my lokis more it's been bothering me for a while#reminder: i am here because they cast a woman in a previously-male role and SHE'S NOT EVEN IN THIS FILM. OR ANY OF THEM. D:#don't think the alligator's gonna turn up here either :( :( :(#otherwise it's just kind of fascinating what this film assumes i do and don't know about these characters#nick fury's a goth right?

What You Need to Know about Namor and Talokan
I haven't done a comics-explainer post in awhile. Thought maybe now would be good. Except this isn't just about comics now, it's also about some real world mythology.
In the comics, Namor was one of Marvel's oldest superheroes. He was created in 1939, the same year as Superman. You may know that most of Marvel's biggest superheroes were created by Stan Lee. But Lee's best-known work happened after World War II, during the 1960s. So unlike DC, Marvel doesn't really have that many "Golden Age" superheroes.
Though some of the Marvel Golden Age characters have been retconned and reimagined in newer stories, only three really have been consistently popular since their original publication: Captain America, Namor and the Human Torch.
So Namor is important, not just because he is a powerful character in the comics, but because he was integral in Marvel's early publishing success in the real world. (Marvel, like many other comics publishers, struggled to stay in business during the 1950s because of a crackdown on comics as a "bad influence" on young people.) He's one of these three that kept the company in business.
He is, of course, also important for in-story reasons. Notably, Namor is considered Marvel's first mutant. That is, he was the first mutant character to have stories published about him by Marvel. Though he wasn't revealed to be a mutant until the 60s, he had books about him dating since the 30s, if that makes sense. (This was confusing to me as a kid because we knew there were older mutants inside the comic book continuity, nor the first to utter the word "mutant" but the first mutant superhero in our real-world chronology, if that makes sense.) I mention this because it will probably come up that he is the "first mutant" in press, as the world is dying for the X-Men to be introduced into the MCU.
It would make perfect sense if Namor is included in "The Mutants" or other mutant-related MCU projects. He is known to be part of the X-Men team in the crossover event "A v X", when the X-Men fought the Avengers. (I'm not going to get into the specifics there regarding the Phoenix force, but just known he was Team X.)
Inside the books, Namor is both Human/Mutant and Atlantean. Atlantis is the fictional world under the sea. In comics, his father is a human (with a mutant gene) and his mother is a princess of Atlantis. Thus he has both the powers of Atlanteans and human mutants. Because one set of superpowers isn't enough!
It seems, from the trailer, that in the film Namor will still be half-human but rather that his mother was human and his father was from Talokan.
In Mexica/Aztec traditions, Tlālōcān is a paradise ruled by the rain god Tlaloc. The name "Atlantis" has been removed for the film, as "Wakanda Forever" is trying to root this fictional world in Mesoamerican traditions, not Greek ones. As a mythology nerd, I will point out that Tlaloc is the name the Aztecs/Mexica used for the rain god but the Mayans used the name Chaac. There seems to be some picking and choosing with names because "K'uk'ulkan" is referenced in the trailer and that is the Mayan name for the god the Aztecs would have called Quetzalcoatl, which is the opposite choice.
In any case, it is not "Atlantis" in the film and it is also Talokan with a k not a c, which seems to give some distinction between the mythical place and underwater kingdom of the film.
The war cry used by the kingdom in the film translates to "Talokan rises" and is their version of "Wakanda forever".
But back to Namor himself. What are his powers? We don't really know exactly what he can do in the film, but in the comics, he's super strong and durable--something he gets from the non-human side of his family. He's over 100 years old but still looks good in tiny swim shorts. (Edit update: Tenoch Huerta said in a press conference that the film version of Namor is over 500 years old. This lines up with the speculation that the old timey scenes we see in the trailer are of the Spanish conquest of "the New World." So we may see his people forced into the sea to survive.)
His mutant abilities are related to the wings on his ankles, that give him the ability to fly. They also seem to have amplified his non-human powers, making him stronger and more durable than the regular undersea dwellers in the comics.
In the trailers, we see him easily deflecting attacks, suggesting he is as durable as the comics (where he can just stand there while people shoot at him with guns). He can also fly via the wings on his feet. Most notably, we see him using an ability to control water.
In the comics, Namor stole his hydrokinetic powers from the Spider-man villain Hydro-man. But it makes more sense to simply give him these in the film, as possibly mutant abilities. It is more impressive than feet wings (though those are adorable).
Namor is often an antagonist but also often a hero. This comes from his differing perspective from land-dwelling humans. Like, he did come out of the water to fight Hitler, for example. And he will help with alien attacks that might destroy the entire planet, but he is often at odds with humanity itself. (And to be fair, we do pollute his ocean and kill his people so maybe we deserve it.)
Namor and T'Challa are rivals in the comics, though they are also both teammates on the Illuminati at times (yes, those guys that Wanda killed in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.) And, it should be noted, he has a particularly history with the Fantastic Four as well. It was the Human Torch (Johnny Storm, the second hero to carry this moniker) who helped him regain his memories and restore his powers in the 1960s. He is also often portrayed as in love with Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, putting him at odds with Reed Richards, her husband.
Many hope that Namor in "Wakanda Forever" will help set up both the X-Men and the Fantastic Four in the MCU.
"Namor" is pronounced "Nay-mor" in the comics. In the film it will be pronounced that way and also "Nah-mor" (meaning "no amor" or no love), an intentional commentary about the way Latinx people often have their names mispronounced by the masses.

Spring '22 goals review: 👍/👍👍
In depth analysis under the cut.
———————————————————————————————
Wordcount on WIPs: 0/20.000
Developing detailed drafts: 0 ≥ 20 pages
Graphic artworks: 5/1 (8 published)
Captain America/Trek patches(x2), MCU/Trek patches(x2), Merlin/Trek metallic patch, AOS Romulan Commander.
Revisiting NCIS/Trek Crew
Graphics completed, updated characters bio to 75%.
Revisiting Merlin/Trek Crew
Graphics 50%, characters bio updated to 60%. I exceeded this goal, posting 3 manips and 1 headcanon in April, 4 in May and 1 in June. Failed to post something in the spring half of March, though.
Manga editing: 0 (100 = project complete)
Season 1-per-Month post goal: 4/4
———————————————————————————————
- Do and/or finish one fanwork per month [✔]
March: - The Stonn manip doesn’t count, as it was done during the previous season. - Added some bios to the Star Trek x NCIS crew. - Added plenty of characters to the Star Trek x Merlin crew edit and settled for the final crew complement. - Reopened the old WIP Star Trek x Star Wars Prequels edit, and settled for the final crew complement.
April: - Collected the ideas, worked and published one of the canons for Jim Kirk. - Finally achieved a decent final version for the NCIS ship assignment badge and settled for it. - Finished the metallic version of the Merlin ship assignment badge. Very very satisfied. - Completely remade from scratch the Captain America’s ship assignment. Pretty decent result, if you ask me. - Finally managed to do the same for the MCU’s/Avengers as well. - Added three main villains that were missing from the Star Trek x Star Wars Prequels edit. - The last two weeks, as I changed my “timezone” (switched the sleep/awake times), I hit a dry spell. As in: most of the days I didn’t even turn my pc on.
May: Bad, bad month. Just... nothing to see here. - Saving the last ten days that had been mildly productive with the starting and finishing of the AOS Romulan Commander fancasting manip.
June: Nothing. Spent most of the “my things” time to re-read and fix a bit the monster-draft for the Subdom AU. For which I seemed to find the muse back in the very last days of Spring, so those accomplishments fall already in Summer.
- Finish & post some old graphic WIP [✔] [1]
- Post some finished graphic that was held back [✔] [ 1]
- Finish Chronicles of Camelot’s retouch ❌
- Finish that 90% done 2015 Spirk one shot ❌

WandaVision premiere liveblog!
All spoilers will be contained under the cut; I’ll be editing & saving this post as I watch!
Seriously I can’t believe we’re here! Round of applause for everyone who has been here over the years! I’m so excited that we’ll be joined by a whole new wave of people for the show. No matter how the show ends up, I’m glad we’re all sharing this!
I have watched a streaming premiere approximately 0 times before... do they go up exactly at the turn of the hour or is it here or there?
Apparently it’s five minutes post the hour...
Here we go! Marvel Studios intro has changed Wanda’s little part from the AoU “you are an Avenger” to her fight with Thanos. Vision is still the last thing we see in the “M” for the final logo.
Oh my god her little short wedding dress! Love that it’s “starring” Wanda and Vision. And man they are just dropping us in media res.
I’m dying this is too cute. And they did remember Vision doesn’t technically eat food! I wonder how the dinner party will go...
I am going to be creating Sims 4 house of every single era no one can stop me.
“Charmed”, from Agnes. Haha.
Oh we have a name for the husband--Ralph. Don’t think there’s any significance there.
People we weren’t kidding Bettany is completely natural in this environment.
He’s so carbon based I love him. CARBON BASED.
Oh they actually call him Vision. Does he have a first name? That’s his last name I’m assuming...
That magazine is “Glamorous” is seen in the 70s too.
A toaster... ok. So long as they avoid the obvious joke. Oh that’s the “blinking red light” from Stark Industries.
OH THAT EXPLAINS THE DRESS! Aw that’s too cute!
Oh she is still Sokovian! And Mr Hart is all red scare. I love they brought that in.
Interesting Wanda brings up super speed before his density shifting.
Woah thirsty Vision! 👀
Oh there’s the density reference.
That’s REALITY WARPING BABY!
Oh my god this is genuinely funny!
I like how Wanda is European with her super American accent but Vision is... I guess not?
Interesting...Vision doesn’t act until Wanda commands him to. And it looks like Mrs Hart was pleading with Wanda there right?
YAKETY YAK OFFICIAL SCARLET VISION SONG.
Those names in the  credits didn’t mean anytihng to me.... gonna Google them later.
Oooh MCU real credits. Very cool. Pixel Rose, pixel glasses, pixel... gazebo? Pixel watertower, pixel children’s mobile, pixel staircase, pixel house, Halloween costumes.  Aw... the wedding rings...
That’s Episode 1 done!
Praying for animated opening... Oh we get a previously on, that’s cute.
Yeah you can kind of hear the difference in Elizabeth Olsen’s 60s cadence here. Neat.
Can I say I love they aren’t completely sexless?
HELL YEAH ANIMATED HERE WE GO!
Oh cute they’re all the actual characters!
Oh shit they’re actually called Glamour and Illusion. +1 for fake Wardell. Anyway that’s a reference to the sidekicks from the 2nd 80s mini.
Love how it’s transformed to a slightly more naturalistic approach.
There Agnes is with the brooch again...
Huh that mailman is suspicious.
Love the reference to Mary Tyler Moore’s pants-wearing being a controversial thing in The Dick Van Dyke Show.
Please clap.
Hmmm I kinda know what they mean with the weird splices of mystery kind of out of nowhere.  Interesting that both Mr Hart and Dottie suddenly get a lot nicer when they have... incidents...
Strucker like Baron von Strucker? Oh yes that’s HYDRA lol
Aww that’s so cute, he’s “drunk”!
Haha his smug face when he floats
Wanda is too cute as Glamour!
Oh my god his drunk party tricks.
Oh look the cabinet has the Mind Stone on it.
I love how they kind of subtly established Wanda wanted kids with the “for the children” thing.
Aw...he put his hand on her belly to protect the babies.
SIMS 4 HOUSE COMING GOTTA DO IT.
Oh that’s interesting... there was that one clip from the trailers showing them sitting down and kissing that doesn’t happen in this.
Anyway, that’s it for Episode 2! This was amazing and more than exceeding my expectations. I was a little worried by the early reviews but frankly, if that’s the worst of their problems it’s only getting better from here!!

Pietro, no Fietro could still possibly be Peter from X-Men Universe… Maybe?
So as revealed in Episode 9 of WandaVision, the identity of Fietro is none other than Ralph Bohner, the husband Agness always mention, and a possible real resident of Westview. WV director Matt Shakman already clarified that the “Bohner” is actually a reference to his 80’s sitcom Growing Pains. But for many fans of Evan Peters, this “Bohner” joke didn’t play well and at the same time, let us breakdown everything that is wrong with this identity of Ralph Bohner and why he’s suspicious despite the claim of WandaVision writers/director that Evan Peters has nothing to do with the mutants or X-Men Universe, after all they always deny everything. They even mentioned that they had no idea that Evan Peters appearance will cause so many theories and everything, which I highly doubt, I mean come on, they made him play QuickSilver in WandaVision when he is QuickSilver himself only of another universe. I don’t dissed ATJ, I love this guy too from his Kickass, Godzilla movie (this is where I first encounter ATJ before his QS role in Avengers), but as a QS, Evan Peters top him, on my opinion at least, he even has his own QS commercials. Also, Evan Peters have more cool QS moments, the Kitchen scene VS the Age of Ultron overall, at least for me, I prefer the kitchen scene and the whiplash part. Anyhow, let us begin:
Note: I edited this post to make this article more easier to read and added additional info.
1. Speculations roaming around that Ralph Bohner could be an aspiring actor because the picture is actually his headshot (which actually looks like his earlier AHS photos). I’m not going to debunk this possibility, but I do not believe it’s a headshot nor he’s an aspiring actor. Although true enough, the image does looks like of Evan Peters early AHS photos (kind of like Tate Langdon) – which is probably a reference to that, who knows.
2. The pile of papers on the side table. It is questionable why would your papers, a bill (a very old bill even - not folded or inside one of those envelopes) and your photos in plain sight where Monica – an outsider can see it? Almost as if you planned it all along and he wanted Monica to see it.
3. Necromancy vs Crystallum Possession. Necromancy is a dark arts of when the person (the Necromancer) can manipulate the dead body of the person, or summoning their spirit. Crystallum Possession however is also part of the dark arts but this time you are using an object (like crystals, gems, stones etc) that is embodied with the user’s spells to manipulate the wearer.
Agatha had told Wanda that what she does is a crystallum possession since necromancy is a no-no due to his brother’s body is on another continent, and since this Pietro died in 2014, it should now be bones, I think the “full of holes” remark is nothing more than a mocking remark, because if it’s not, then Marvel will probably have their own interpretation of Necromancy and Crystallum Possession, and this could probably go darker. And Ralph is wearing a bead necklace that is embedded with Agatha’s power. But is Agatha really in full control of Ralph? Honestly, I don’t think so. Why? Because in Episode 6, Peter said about Wanda’s costume “Worse than the costume mom made us the year we got typhus”, then she reminisced “that year”, and told him  “That’s not exactly how I remember it.” because in her universe, she isn’t wearing Halloween costume she thinks is worse and she didn’t deny about them getting typhus, so what are the odds of Agatha/Fietro getting that info if he is not Peter? Also, we don’t know how MARVEL will tell the story multiverse/alternate timelines (the Russo Brothers already claimed that they have their own way of telling this story), but if we are looking for a one generic rule, major life events will occur but will be told uniquely as per their universe, on this case Peter and Wanda did had a typhus, but in Peter’s world, his Wanda and him are probably wearing whatever cosplay outfit their mom made and in Wanda and Pietro are just wearing something simple, or it could be that Peter really just have a weird sense of style.
4. The WATER BILL. Now, this is a real bill, it is not part of Wanda’s illusion, this is Ralph’s actual water bill, because Ralph’s house was under Agatha’s spell, which makes it exempted from Wanda’s spell.  Also, if you go frame by frame, you can actually see the word “Water”, “PAST DUE” on the right column part of the bill, before it totally goes out of focus and you can only read the left side part, that also says “YOUR MONTHLY USAGE (1,000 GAL INCREMENTS)”, which further validates it’s a water bill, not a phone bill nor electricity bill as others actually claim. And here is the tricky part, the bill’s date. On the right side under the STATEMENT is the Account Information (using Arial font), it’s a bit hard to make out of it, but it’s actually an old bill. Before it becomes totally blurry, you can read the right part of the bill that says:
STATEMENT
ACCOUNT INFORMATION
ACCOUNT:                      09-3476-12
SERVICE ADDRESS:     2804 SHERWOOD DRIVE
BILL DATE:                     10/01/2020
DUE DATE:                     10/31/2020
If we go back to Infinity War, it takes place in June 2018. So that means that this Ralph Bohner survived the SNAP, but what could happen to him in year 2019-2020? Who knows, I don’t even know if I should care or not.
If we check on the usage chart – which is “not blurred” (it’s also in increments of 12 – 12/24/36/48/60), and I’ll just speculate on the numbers on the meter chart, so don’t take my word for it. Also, I don’t know what Marvel is planning or hinting by showing this insignificant 2020 bill, which also has confusing usage. (I’ll just use term like pcm – per cubic meter, so that it won’t just be plain numbers beside the month).
January - 6 pcm
February – 18 pcm
March – 6 pcm
April – 6 pcm
June – 6 pcm
July – 9 pcm
August – 13 pcm
September – 22 pcm
October – 34 pcm
(November and December have gray shade - similar to the one in month of Jan-May).
Again, I don’t know what’s the significance of not blurring this part of the bill while the right side column is properly blurred. And the confusing part of this bill, is the bill date is of 10/01/2020 – meaning Ralph had received this bill during the first week of October, but why is there already a usage for the full month of October, when usage should be only show up to the month of September? After the Account Information, there’s the
METER INFORMATION (WATER)
USAGE   PREVIOUS   DATE      CURRENT       DATE
4             1963 (?)        09/01/20      *- - - -*          *- - - -*
The PREVIOUS actually looks like either 1063 or 1963, and oddly enough the first Avengers Comics was published on September 1, 1963, I don’t know if that’s a reference to that, but from my pov, it shouldn’t be because this series is inspired of House of M and a bit touch of West Coast Avengers, which was already reference by the SUV plate number in Episode 7. The CURRENT and DATE are both unreadable, I can only identify _ _ _ 2 in CURRENT and 0_/_ _/20 for the DATE after.
And let’s also not forget that outside the HEX, it is August 2023 and as per Episode 8, inside the HEX is currently year 2013 as shown in the auditorium behind the lighting after it explained how Wanda created Vision. I don’t know if this is a reference to something from the past MCU projects (X-Men even) or future franchise like Falcon and Winter Soldier, who knows, really. I just find it weird why they didn’t blurry the meter chart while the rest are. But why year 2020? Why isn’t this bill thrown out yet? Didn’t Monica notice that billing date of the bill?
5. The man-cave. The staff really transformed Fietro’s man-cave into very, very Peter-like (if he really is not Peter). I will list thing that are present and similar to what Peter of X-Men Universe room have. I’ll reference * (single asterisk) for Days of Future Past, ** (double asterisk) for Apocalypse, and *** (triple asterisk) for both films.
❀ comfortable couch***
❀ guitar***
❀ headphones***
❀ balls*
❀ lots of posters***
❀ bike***
❀ a bar**
❀ shoes on the floor**
❀ different types of drinks (non alcoholic)***
Also, lots of silver/metallic items such as:
❀ silver lamp**
❀ silver TV
❀ silver house ventilation tubes
❀ silver pillowcases (looks gray on other angles)
❀ silver mini fridge
❀ silver microwave oven
❀ silver rack (where TV and speaker stands)
❀ silver wristwatch*
❀ video games*** (both PS & XBox)
and even something that looks like a stolen goods like the Tiki Bar plaque, Tiger head.
This Fietro is basically just missing the goggles, I did my best to look for it (like on those detective games that instructs you to find this and that *lol*), but there’s really none *laugh*. Also, I just noticed the arrangement of his man-cave – single-seat couch** > small side table with a lamp** > 3-seater couch (the Apocalypse has an L-shape couch though) > a middle coffee table**, this arrangement is similar to Peter’s man-cave in Apocalypse which can be slightly seen when his mom came down saying “Just checking on you” (you can watch it at starting point 1:02:55, at least on my copy), you just need to look for proper timing because a few of those shots are out of focus probably due to her obviously looking somewhere reading her lines that are raised besides the camera, which became even more obvious  when she did a close up shot when she told him “But trust me, this won’t end well. Nothing does with him.”
Also, in Episode 5, when Peter first made an appearance, the leather jacket he’s wearing is eerily similar to the one he’s wearing in his cameo appearance in Deadpool 2 (we only got the glimpse of the front of the jacket in Deadpool but the front side of his jacket in WandaVision is identical). Though I find it weird too that his hair color switch from silver to light ash blonde.
6. Ralph is the guy under witness protection? I doubt it, although honestly at first I considered maybe he is, but after a few thinking, it doesn’t lead to it, because if he’s in witness protection, and the person who is managing him forgets him because of Wanda, FBI database should still at least have a photo of him to be able to identify him, and Jimmy in episode 7 saw Peter and never commented about him being their missing guy. As we all know, the house is under the name Ralph Bohner, who we can assume survived the SNAP and possibly left that house in September 2020. If he had left the house way back in 2020, why does Agent Woo or FBI rather only checked it now? Also, if Ralph Boner is indeed the guy under witness protection, it is the FBI that pays off their bill, on this case, the Water Bill was past due even if it was an old bill, so I don’t think he is.
7. Does Ralph Boner really exist? This is actually something that I have given some thought. Because if we think of QuickSilver, one of his abilities as per comics is his Quick Intelligence. His mind process a lot of things much faster than an average person. Peter spying on everyone and pretending to be someone else in an unknown world is not surprising, let alone using everything he can take advantage of. It can be that the bill is fake and there is really no Ralph Bohner, or just like what I mentioned in #7, he could’ve possibly left in September 2020 and hasn’t returned yet, and Peter assumes this identity to avoid suspicion.
If we are to assume he really is Peter Maximoff of X-Men Universe (Earth-TRN414) and crossed over to Earth-616, I did consider this could also be the house where he lives as per his universe and just so happens that Ralph Bohner is the current owner of the house in this MCU. Also, Xavier Institute is located in NY and in Days of Future Past, they only drove from NY to his house via rental car, which we can assume that he doesn’t live that far from NY, after all NY and NJ are neighbors.
8. Also this has nothing to do with Ralph/Fietro, but something I noticed, that the outside anomaly or outside of Westview – about the selective amnesia has yet to be answered. It only explained that Wanda is manipulating the people INSIDE, but not the ones outside the HEX. What actually come to mind when I think about it is that it can be a work by a TELEPATH which can be either Charles Xavier or Emma Frost (no Jean Grey? Yes I excluded her). What I am actually thinking is that the person under witness protection is a spy sent by Charles or possibly working with him. He could have implanted false memory to the so called “family and friends”, so when the HEX was established, the strings got cut off hence no one could remember this “missing person” anymore, and Jimmy who has nothing to do with this “missing person” is not affected by the selective amnesia and assumes the responsibility of looking for him. And assuming Charles is the telepath who altered their memories of the people outside of Westview, he probably has done it as a precaution since he couldn’t contact his spy or “missing person” and wouldn’t take the risk of endangering the resident who were happened to be outside the HEX when Wanda establishes it.
These are just some of the things I find that doesn’t make sense with Ralph’s identity. But we’ll just leave it at that. I still really want James McAvoy back as Charles Xavier and Michael Fassbender as Magneto, since both Sir Ian McKKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart did mention they’re done with their role. And I feel that it’s too risky to use them since they are in their 80’s now, I don’t know them personally but it gives me some sorts of paranoia *laughs* thinking they might get injured.

Work Description: I'm offering an edit full HD (1080p or 720p) with the song of your choice. If you want examples, you can find some of my works on youtube and others on my twitter account. Of course it depends of my personal life but most of the time it would take me around two-three weeks to do an edit. I will of course contact the winner if I need more time. At first, I'll make a draft which consists in matching the lyrics with the scenes I picked and send it to you for approval. Once everything is clear, I'll start the editing and show you updates all the long if you want. Don't hesitate to tell me if you want some specific scenes in the video or if there are scenes you want to match with specific lyrics. I also use contents from the MCU movies only because I tend to just play with canon but we can discuss if you want scenes from others movies/series (for example, I used a scene of young RDJ and one of Aubrey Joseph as Tyrone Johnson to play young RhodeyTony + the kiss of Simon and Bram from "Love, Simon" or for Stevetony the kiss between RDJ and Val Kimer from "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang")

Spidey’s leaving the MCU. Thoughts?
It’s been fascinating watching the discourse evolve in real time from “This is terrible” to “If you’re bummed about this it means you tacitly endorse Disney consuming all of culture” to “hey, Into The Spider-Verse somehow managed to escape Sony, so why should we think this will end up like their last 3 live-action Spider-Man movies that were clearly considered far higher-priority than that and treated as such just like this will be?” to “this is definitely all a negotiation tactic”. Given the last time word about a possible MCU-Sony deal pertaining to Spider-Man that Sony was cool on leaked the public outcry got them to turn around and make a deal within 3 months, I’m thinking the latter is probably more likely than not, but by no means guaranteed.
So in principle, in pure abstract principle, if it goes through, it doesn’t have to be a failure. Spider-Man being removed from the MCU doesn’t have that gigantic a reverberation through it because Spider-Man himself is a bit player in-universe, and even if I’ve been right and Norman Osborn was planned as the villain for a Secret Invasion/Dark Reign Phase 4 arc, he could easily be replaced with the likes of Ezekiel Stane. Far From Home could easily work as a final coming to terms with and farewell to those elements on Peter’s end, given one of its big messages ends up “don’t be Iron Man, be Spider-Man”; with him on the run and presumably disavowed by S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers, and Happy no longer seeing Aunt May, a third Spidey flick wouldn’t have to contort itself too horrifically to make internal sense as a direct sequel to the previous two without directly mentioning Stark or the other superheroes. The initial report says Jon Watts is staying onboard as director, and even if they want to shoehorn Venom in that could play out reasonably enough given, again, Peter’s on the run and would need to take what help he could get. Spider-Man and Venom vs. Kraven could be a perfectly decent movie without a single reference to Ant-Man. It could really even work *better* than way without having to wrestle with any involvement with the larger universe, or pressure to conform to house style.
In practice, if it happens, it’s probably going to be a fucking nightmare. The reasons for which are best represented by this guy:
Tumblr media
Presumably even as we speak, devoted method actor Jared Leto is breaking into a bloodbank to greedily gobble up a pint of O negative previously bound for a children’s hospital in preparation for his performance as Morbius, the living vampire. Alongside Venom 2, whatever’s up with those Black Cat and/or Silver Sable movies, Sinister Six, and goddamn Nightwatch, ‘Sony’s Marvel Universe’ proceeds apace, and now they get to actually use the centerpiece character as they please to lend this all an air of legitimacy rather than desperate scrambling with a gaggle of hopeless D-listers. And does anyone - anyone - truly imagine Sony’s Spider-Man movie is going to be allowed to meaningfully center around anything but servicing the theoretical franchise? Because if so I want nothing more than to meet you and pick your brain to see how someone still believes in the inherent decency and dignity of man as powerfully as you, you sweet summer child.
So yeah, if this goes through it’s gonna be at best a deeply compromised movie in service of a bad idea. How does it all end up? I think in large part, it might actually lay in Tom Holland’s hands. Probably this is a dumb suggestion - there’s contracts and him probably wanting to ride out his biggest meal ticket and the studio egos that clearly played more of a role in this than money in the first place - but could Holland just threaten to walk if this goes through? Because this is a weird, specific situation where that threat would have tremendous leverage in a way it normally wouldn’t.
Tumblr media
If Hugh Jackman had left halfway through Fox’s X-Men and they’d had to recast, or RDJ after Age of Ultron, that’d have been a tremendous blow to those series, but because it was a shared universe there still would have been all the surrounding major players and narrative architecture to let fans know it was the same thing they hopefully already liked. If Holland leaves however, it’s not that Spider-Man Disney set up for them anymore. Without the connection to the MCU, his face would be basically the one remaining major signifier to the public (sorry MJ/Ned, I’m talking Captain America-level ‘major’) that this is the Spider-Man they already really liked to the tune of a billion dollars. If they have to recast it wouldn’t even matter whether or not they formally rebooted, because even if they continued directly from where Far From Home left off, to the world at large this immediately becomes just another Amazing-style cash grab not affiliated with anything they like, an X-Men/DCEU second-tier super-franchise and one that screwed them out of better Avengers movies down the line to boot, and Sony would loose…hundreds of millions, I imagine? So yeah, leverage. And if Holland realized he had it and has an agent or manager or whatever who gives decent advice I have to imagine he’d use it: worst-case scenario they boot him, he goes out on a high note and already has other projects lined up like Uncharted rather than lashing his burgeoning career and reputation to a sinking ship. Best-case he gets more Avengers paydays plus substantially higher-grossing solo movies after all.
So as I see it, four potential outcomes, in what I’d consider order of likelihood:
1. This is all grandstanding and everything’s gonna be back to normal next month.
2. Holland stays, Spider-Man: Homeless performs substantially below what Sony was somehow hoping for in spite of everybody’s best efforts because these are the same genius producers behind Amazing plus now the mastermind behind X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and it returns to Marvel with its tail between its legs in time for Peter Parker to swing into Avengers 6 and ask where everybody was when he was getting framed for mass murder.
3. Holland threatens to bail, factions within Sony realize how much they stand to lose here by severing the rebuilt positive public association that’s the entire basis for how they think they can make this work - without that they’re back at square one where they reached out to Marvel in the first place - cooler heads prevail and a new deal is struck.
4. Holland’s bluff is called or the idiots who wanted this in the first place can him of their own accord because they think they can and should make a complete fresh start work. A new Spider-Man is cast, and while realistically the movies blow there’s less pressure to reverse this due to the cleaner break; unless there’s a boda-fide total flop Spidey remains out of the MCU’s grasp for the foreseeable future. Until Disney just flat-out buys Sony, to be clear.
So I think pretty much however you slice it this ends with Spider-Man still in the mix, albeit he may be going on hiatus from the big leagues for a bit; there’s some poetic irony there about him leaving just as the FF and X-Men arrive, the MCU stymied at the last from finally getting all their IP under one umbrella. Though I don’t know that I’d exactly count this as any sort of anti-corporate victory when either way Disney still gets all other Spider-Man stuff and merch sales that any movies will still drive, and either way Sony gets Spider-Man filmwise, so the only major outcome is we just might be stuck with shittier movies. A somewhat serious question if it goes through though: would all future editions of Infinity War have to have Holland edited out of the box art because they’re not allowed to advertise Spider-Man anymore, and likewise Iron Man scrubbed from the covers for Homecoming?  Will reissuings of Homecoming/Far From Home have to have the MCU precredits montage taken out (meaning no more orchestral reaction of the 60s theme in them!)?  I guess Disney has some experience in this sort of area with Who Framed Roger Rabbit so they’ll have protocols, but presumably when they lay it out to the head of Sony he’ll laugh at Marvel for having the hubris to try and advise them or thinking they have any say on the matter, and then turn around and immediately step on a rake.

There are three big reasons I have not and don’t want to see Endgame ....
For one, I wrote a lengthy article about that will run in June at Sequential Tart (I'll update this post with the link when it goes live *EDIT* Here it is: The Subject of Character Death, Revisited - http://www.sequentialtart.com/article.php?id=3362 ). The other two, I'll talk about here; they involve Steve and Bucky.
I know what you’re thinking: Wolfie, how can you form an opinion on a movie you haven't seen? Well, I do have mental health issues (undiagnosed and untreated because I have no insurance or job, yay), so when the film was released in China, I found someone to spoil me so that I might make an informed decision as to whether or not I could *handle* seeing it, given some worries I had (and especially since 3 hours without a bathroom break was not going to work for me or my companion). I determined from that convo that it would be a Very Bad Idea for me to see the film.
Even seeing the constant posts about it  -- especially ones that called it a  “beautiful” or “perfect” end, etc. -- was triggering anxiety and mental anguish / circular thoughts (admittedly in part because there were similarly “bad” things happening in other fandoms of mine -- it was too much at once). And I'm STILL having massive issues with circular thoughts about it.
This essay isn't meant to tell anyone they’re wrong about how they perceive / feel about the film, BUT, while I know I shouldn't care what other people think, the sitch still makes me feel how I feel: frankly, a bit disturbed that people are loving things that are making me so awful. I feel like I've stepped into some sort of Bizarro world -- like I'm somehow in the wrong universe. It’s very distressing. (I mean ... they call it mental *illness* for as reason, right?)
In this franchise where I once found such great joy, I now find little more than anguish. It’s actually been making me physically ill to see the posts -- or to look on my massive Marvel collection; I've had to box much of it away for now. Hopefully some day I can enjoy it again. (I can't exactly stop using my $60 Captain America backpack I begged for, for my birthday, though. :/)
I find that when my thoughts get like this (like I'm on a runaway train that keeps revisiting the same stations), the only thing that helps even a little is to sort out my thoughts on the page -- even if I’ve done it before, as I have with this in the comments section of friends posts. (You may have seen other people express similar thoughts, too.)  And really, I don't want to rain on my friend’s parades, so I figure I’ll post it in my own space, and then if people ask me my thoughts, I can just point them here. And hopefully this post will help others who are similarly struggling (I know there are at least a few).
As for the old chestnut “It’s just a story/ a fictional character”, well, for one thing, let me repeat: mentally ill here. If I could control how I feel, I wouldn’t BE mentally ill. But also, I'm a writer who feels writing is a sacred calling, so when I feel a story is badly told, I tend to take it personally. Yes, I know my opinion is not the be-all, end all -- if you think it’s a good story, yay for you. Me, I feel betrayed by this story in a way I have rarely felt before (the other biggest instance having happened the week before the film's release, so double-whammy, yay).
Warning: if you read any further, I assume you either saw Endgame or don’t care about Spoilers.
(*edited to add* If you need some solace too, check out @antiendgame to find other people who are upset.)
The first upsetting points for me were the Noble Deaths (and, in Loki’s case, lack of resurrection) -- I hate that trope with the fire of a thousand suns. But that’s what I wrote the article on (including how 2012 Loki’s escape doesn't make me feel any better), so no more on that here.
Now, let me preface the rest of this by saying no, I wasn’t expecting a romantic presentation of Stucky. And as hard as I ship them fanon-wise, I don’t actually hate Steggy -- I adore Peggy in her own right (and like the idea of them  being a threesome with Bucky).
What I DO hate is that Steve abandoned Bucky for her.
Aside from Steve’s moral compass, Bucky was the impetus behind pretty much *everything* Steve did in his trilogy. He found the missing soldiers because Bucky was amongst them. Bucky’s death broke him -- and finding him again in Winter Soldier seemed to give Steve, who was clearly depressed, new life. Despite Sam insisting Bucky was Gone, Steve wouldn't kill Bucky to save the world. And in Civil War, Steve fought other dear friends, and was willing to throw away his own freedom, to protect his best friend. So how the FUCK is them being *separated pretty much forevermore* a satisfactory end to that story???????
TL;DR, the Captain America movies were about the repeated separation and reunion of Steve and Bucky … and yet we barely got to SEE them together before Steve said sayonara to the man he’d been best friends with for over a for over a decade, to go be with a woman he’d known for about a year.
A woman who’d already had a family without him.
Yeah, we can say her family still exists in the original timeline -- but I have seen soooo many different explanations of how the time sitch works out, it’s not even funny.
Really, that’s the third reason I don't want to see the movie: I HATE time paradox, and this movie sounds riddled with it. Also, as I understand it, the writers and the Russos are saying different things, with the Russos saying it’s a different timeline (which apparently Steve would be going *back* to after the shield pass, for some reason, and yeah, that bothered me, that he didnl't even give his best friend that momento, and sent their last onscreen moments together talking to SAM), and the writers saying no, the alternate timelines were only a thing when the Stones were in play. So yeah, Steve could spend the rest of his life with Bucky then ... but that means he also would have erased Peggy’s family (and maybe her work). Unless he was the man she married all along.
Either way, it would mean that Steve let Bucky suffer, and let HYDRA infiltrate SHIELD, neither being things I could see him doing.
And if it IS a branched-off timeline, I LOATHE that time theory, because it means NOTHING WE DO MATTERS. There’s always a version of us that’s our worst selves, and people who suffer because of it. That’s hella depressing. (Even if it would explain why I feel like I'm in the wrong world.)
At any rate, the ONLY end I really wanted was to see Steve and Bucky get to be together, no matter how -- “just friends” would have been fine. It was literally the thing I wanted most in the whole damn MCU franchise (aside from seeing Loki be redeemed and then fight alongside the Avengers. *sigh* At least I didn't have high hopes there ...). I would rather Steve had taken Bucky back in time WITH him, even if Steve still married Peggy; time paradox issues aside, I could have lived with that -- yes, even if it meant we didn’t get The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. (And honestly, how much am I supposed to look forward to that anyway, when Sam has been such an *inexplicably* uncompassionate asshole to Bucky in WS and CW? A guy who runs meetings for people with PTSD holds a grudge against a guy who was brutally mind-raped? It's like they made him OOC for the lolz!)
As for “Oh, but Bucky knew and he was okay with it!”
Uh, if he was okay with it, it's just because the writers *wrote* him that way for their own convenience, so they could do this ending. I have been besties with someone most of our lives. We broke up a few times, but we managed to keep finding our way back to each other. We don't live in the same state, so we rarely see each other, but at least we DO sometimes, and we write each other. If this person said they were going to go live somewhere with no way to communicate with me ever again, so they could be with someone they loved, of course I wouldn't want to say don't leave, because I'd want them to be happy, and wouldn't want to stand in the way … but that doesn't mean I'd be “okay”. in the slightest. And I wouldn't WANT other people I care about to go through such pain, much less think it beautiful to watch.
Plus, as I always say, this is fiction -- I don't need *that much* “reality” in my escapism. Temporary angst is my bread-and-butter -- it’s cathartic -- but I need a happy ending to be the payoff. To me, A TRULY happy ending for Steve -- and the one that would have been the best payoff for the narrative we’ve spent a decade watching -- would have been for him to not have to choose between the two people he loved most.
Edited 5/11/19 to add: For all those who are all “Oh, they’re just friends, they aren't gay”, I am more or less fine with sexual Stucky staying fanon; they still love each other platonically, are SOULMATES, ACCORDING TO THE SCREENWRITERS THEMSELVES (Christopher Markus and Steve McFeely), who wrote this as part of the intro to the graphic novel Captain America: White - “…Of course, this is still a rollicking adventure tale, and no adventure is complete without a love story. And yes, these books have one the longest, most tortured one in Marvel history, in fact. We’re talking about Steve and Bucky, without smirking or innuendo or raised eyebrows. Platonic though the relationship may be, from the meet cute to the tragic separation, their bond has all the elements of a classic romance.  These two men love each other – as any pair of friends who faced exclusion, combat, inhumanity, and death would. Their bond stretches across half the twentieth century. The loss of it gnaws at Steve throughout the modern day, and it slices his heart in half when the Winter Soldier rears his tormented, homicidal head. Just as Jeph and Tim’s earlier Daredevil: Yellow, Spider-Man: Blue, and Hulk: Gray all dealt with the major love interests in the heroes’ lives, so too does Captain America: White. Steve and Bucky are each others’ soulmate, if you will, because no one on Earth understands what either of them has been through as well as the other does. The book deals deftly with the strengths and weaknesses that relationship engenders. As the Red Skull himself says to Bucky, “The captain has a … ‘soft spot’ for you. A spot I intend to put a bullet through this very evening.” Soldiers fight for their country. They fight for themselves. They fight for each other. And sometimes they die for these things, too.  The ones who don’t carry the memory of the ones who did for the rest of their days. Steve Rogers is no different.”
So he's gonna leave his soulmate (no matter the nature of their love) behind forever? FUCK THAT NOISE. I am completely baffled ow two writers who see Steve and Bucky that way would go on to give them that ending.
And retouching the whole for Bucky “knows and is okay” thing, the Russos also said that Bucky is too damaged still to be Captain America. Uh, THAT DOESN’T SOUND LIKE THEY REALLY THINK HE’S OKAY.

AO3 filter meme
Tagged by @setsailslash & @sublimediscordance.
1. What’s your first and second most common work ratings?
Teen And Up Audiences (60)  & General Audiences (42)
I am honestly surprised by this.
2. What’s your most common archive warning? Least common? Do you consider yourself an adventurous writer?
Most Common: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings (145)
Least Common: Major Character Death (1) / Rape/Non-Con (1)
My work is kind of everywhere and I find very few of the warnings ever apply. That being said, of the least common, the first should be OBVIOUS. The second I actually had to think about for a minute and then I remembered the entire Nogitsune fiasco and it explained itself.
I don’t know if “adventurous” is the word. I will write pretty much anything. I will share a lot less than that. It’s really just how things evolve and where I am emotionally a lot of the time. I don’t write the fics. They write themselves. I’m just their way out of the void.
3. How many fics have you written in each relationship category? Is this more accidental, or do you have preferences?
- M/M (101)
- Gen (33)
- Multi (22)
-  F/M (7)
- Other (1)
Believe me, no one is more shocked than me by these. I was honestly expecting a heavier tilt. It is 10000% not at all accidental. There are more than enough heteronormative works being shoved at me every single damn day in every single damn way and I am honestly sick to death of them. I like Queer stories. I write Queer stories.
This is not in any way an indictment on anyone’s choices. If it brings you happiness, ship the fuck out of it. Do not let anyone tell you how or why. I, personally, find enjoyment in work that’s more in line with any relationship that does not follow heteronormative patterns.
4. What are your top 4 fandoms by numbers? Are you still active in any of them, and do you tend to migrate a lot?
Pacific Rim (Movies) (65) , Young Avengers (Comics) (24) , Teen Wolf (TV) (17)  & Marvel Cinematic Universe (14) .
Is literally anyone surprised?
I’m a drifter. I have times where I will completely submerge myself in a single fandom and happily not come back up for months. And there are times where I either randomly shift or jump on purpose, for reasons. I am always technically “active” as I am generally always working on something - or otherwise talking about it. Whether that something ever sees the light of internet publication, is another matter entirely.
5. What are your top 4 relationship tags? Does this match how you feel about the characters, or are you puzzled?
- Raleigh Becket & Yancy Becket (28)
- Teddy Altman/Billy Kaplan (19)
- Hercules Hansen & Scott Hansen (15)
- Raleigh Becket/Chuck Hansen (14)
- James "Bucky" Barnes/Steve Rogers (13)  (This one honestly has me headtilting, because wtf, how do I have 14 published and only 13 Stucky?! I am guessing probably I didn’t multitag the one with Sam.)
Yeeeeeah, not at all surprised by any of this. This is pretty standard for me, honestly.
6. What are your top 2 most used additional tags, and your bottom 2? What would happen if you combined all 4 of these into a fic?
Top: Twins (25) / Sibling Incest (25)  & Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence (23)  (Followed immediately by: Kid Fic (22)
Bottom: Pack Dynamics (10) & McCall Pack (9)
I literally have at least four fics tagged with them. So...if you’re curious, they already exist.
7. How many WIPs do you have currently running on AO3? Any you don’t plan on finishing?
Holy shit. I have NINE. Welp.
Seven are Pacific Rim. And Teen Wolf and MCU have one each, respectively.
I mean, I always plan on finishing them. In some cases, they’re already mostly complete and just need some editing. In some cases, they’re in need of entire re-writes. And in others, they’re just really hulking massive and out of control and are just pages and pages of no end in sight and I don’t want to drag it out even more.
I usually prefer to finish a work prior to putting it up. Because I don’t like leaving things open ended for people if I can avoid it. However, every now and again I’ll get moody over how I haven’t posted in a while and I’ll yank and post something that has no business seeing the light of the internet. And so, we find ourselves here.
If it helps, I have WAY MORE WIPs just gathering dust in my drives. Or you know, maybe that just makes it worse. Forget I said anything.
I won’t tag anyone, because I know how that can get. But, if anyone is interested in participating, feel free to be tagged by me.

I finished watching that Avengers film (Avengers Assemble, as it may or may not still be titled in this region)!
First up, I must warn anyone new to the MCU via the same route as myself that THERE IS NOT A SINGLE ALLIGATOR IN THIS MOVIE. Furthermore, Loki is played by A MAN for the entire ten hours that this film runs. Though actually this isn't as disappointing as it sounds, he's probably the most entertaining character in it and if nothing else the endless fucking fight scenes usually pause for a moment or two while one of the heroes confronts him verbally. (And then the fight starts again, but it was a nice respite anyway.)
I don't know how I feel about this film because there's certainly the basis of an entertaining action-film-with-jokes in here but that film is, alas, about an hour shorter than the actual movie. I generally have a low tolerance for fight scenes and this film could be not unfairly described as one interminable fight/action scene (with occasional Loki Interludes). I hadn't even seen that much of this film via tumblr gifs already, which makes me think it's not that beloved? Many scenes were just too long, like when the Avengers were all bitching at each other (I get it already, they're fighting!) and the bit where Thor and Iron Man and then Captain Steve level a forest together went on long past the point where I was thinking "if Loki HASN'T just fucked off while they were fighting then I'm gonna assume getting captured is his actual plan" (it was!). Because srsly he must have sat there patiently waiting for them to finish, perhaps dreaming of a better life in which he was an alligator.
Anyway, they were on a flying aircraft-carrier (NOT the Valiant from Dr Who just exactly like it), and then it crashed except no it didn't, and then we were in New York and they were going to nuke the city except no they didn't. To be honest I'm not sure what the plot actually was beyond "everyone wants the MacGuffin Tesseract for some reason." I don't know why we were in Germany other than so that one German guy could spot Obvious Fascist Rantings in a movie about *checks notes* the United States assembling a force of almost unkillable fighters who act on their own authority and can do as they like because we know they're good people who will always act in the interests of America the world. (In fairness I think this alarming set-up is the plot of a later - or possibly earlier? - Captain America film that I know I've seen but remember nothing from.)
Speaking of, did they cut a bunch of stuff out about Steve America having a crisis about America and the fucked up shit it's got up to? He seemed to be having a sad about that but then he didn't any more, though I admit I could have missed him having an important epiphany of some sort during the endless, endless, endless violence. SO MUCH VIOLENCE. And I am genuinely not sure who caused more damage in the final fight hour sequence between the Bad Aliens and the Avengers. I suppose that's why they keep mentioning that battle in every following Marvel work?
AND OH YEAH PHIL DIED. Phil, who was besties with all the Avengers, even the ones he met five minutes before he died. Everyone was VERY broken up about Phil dying, and he (and some carefully-bloodied trading cards) was the spark that ignited the Avengers by dying. See, Loki's mistake was killing Phil! Killing all those other people was fine though. They didn't even have names, let alone trading cards (bloody or otherwise)!
Have I mentioned that this was quite a long film? I am trying to repeat myself a lot in this 'review' so as to evoke a feeling in the reader akin to the experience of watching people hit each other and things blow up over and over and over again. Because I am an artiste, an auteur, a very tired audience. But Steve was quite good, whether or not he had an arc, and Thor's always entertaining. Tony Stark I strongly dislike for a number of reasons. The Hulk is at least green (and Bruce's angst was weirdly relatable given that his problem is turning green on occasion). Arrows Hawkeye and the Black Widow are (I think) the Canonical M/F Pairing, having bonded together in the unspecified backstory and then further brought together by being the Avengers with the least exciting powers. (Projectile weaponry? Groundbreaking!) And somehow her outfit has a tit-window despite not having a tit-window. But don't worry, she also got called a cunt so this is THE MOST feminist film you can possibly imagine! No wonder it took everyone so long to see through Joss Whedon's bullshit!
Then it ended. At last. I did actually have a break in the New York hour of the fight scene because all the camera movements and close-up violence were making me dizzy. That wasn't fun. But I'd watch and enjoy an hour-long edit of this film, probably. The sad thing is that the interesting parts, where the camera more or less stays still for an entire shot, are likely the bits that were most cut down by the studio to allow the fight scenes room to breathe.
Also, in finishing, I would like to draw attention to this dude at the Posh People Gathering in Germany, whose collar and tie combo is APPALLING and DREADFUL and I think Loki should have murdered him for that alone.

Essential media meme (2019 edition)
Since a number of my old posts (some going back 3 years) have recently been revived by likes and reblogs, I thought I’d do the same with someone elses. @professorsaber reblogged my post earlier tonight about the Star Trek Little Golden Book, and for some reason Tumblr did a “related posts” thing and popped up an “Essential media meme” tag game that I was tagged on back in the fall of 2017. I don’t remember if I ever answered the tag (I can’t find such a  post anyway), but I thought I’d go through the exercise (again?) anyway given that my opinions on what I consider to be “essential media” have evolved since 2017.
Technically I’m not doing this as a tag game, but certainly if anyone wants to do this, they’re welcome to, especially if they did the original back in 2017, to see how things have changed.
MOVIES:
Alita: Battle Angel
Thor Ragnarok (actually 90% of the MCU films, but this one is my favourite)
Ready Player One
MGM musicals
Anything with Audrey Hepburn
Blade Runner
True Stories (David Byrne musical)
TV:
The Orville
The Prisoner (1967 original with Patrick McGoohan)
The Avengers (Steed and Peel)
Game of Thrones
Star Trek TOS/TAS/TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT (sorry, Discovery does not make the cut. I gave it two seasons.)
Victoria
Supergirl and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow
Agents of SHIELD
MUSIC:
Bill Haley and His Comets
Johnny Cash
Lorde
Enya
Laurie Anderson
Kate Bush
Chuck Berry
BOOKS:
Shogun by James Clavell
The Illuminatus! Trilogy by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson
Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell (which is coming very close to being considered non-fiction)
The Age of Spiritual Machines by Robert Kurzweil
Cosmos by Carl Sagan (which I’d also include in the TV list)
Junky by William S. Burroughs
The James Bond novels of Ian Fleming
The Simon Templar (The Saint) books of Leslie Charteris
This is Yesterday by “thisismyplayground” - an as-yet-unfinished Whouffaldi fan fiction novel that’s been a work in progress for more than 4 years, but even in an incomplete state it is still the best Doctor Who novel I’ve ever read. And it’s why I now have more than 60 stories of my own on Archive of Our Own.
THEATRE:
Einstein on the Beach by Philip Glass and Robert Wilson (no relation to Robert Anton Wilson)
That’s actually it, though I’ll give a shoutout to Jenna Coleman’s upcoming play All My Sons which I hope to see in the cinema via National Theatre Live this spring.

Weekend Top Ten #368
Top Ten Things I Kinda Hope Will Happen Now Disney Owns Fox
So this week the merger of the millennium finally went through, and the mouse ate the fox. That is, Disney completed its acquisition of 20th Century Fox, bringing a diverse range of film and TV IP all under one roof. A big, domed roof, with two circular ears on top.
What to make of it? There is the knee-jerk fannish joy at the thought of the X-Men finally being able to join their Avenger cousins under one MCU roof; there is also the worrying prospect of one company holding so much power being able to wield that power uncharitably. Job losses are inevitable; maybe up to 4,000, I read. Fox 2000, a subsidiary production company that has made a name for itself with a slew of critically-acclaimed movies with an indie sensibility, is already being shuttered. So I think there is probably a degree of caution to be exercised when contemplating Mulder and Scully investigating Doctor Strange or the Na’vi turning up in the Galactic Senate.
However, for the time being I’m allowing myself to think of the positives, of the IP mash-ups or events that could transpire both in fiction and “IRL” as they say on the internets. So here, then, are ten things that I’d either like to see happen, or will happen, or would be cool but are incredibly unlikely.
Now to rewatch that Patton Oswalt filibuster from Parks and Rec…
Restore the Fox Fanfare to all Star Wars movies: probably won’t happen for new movies going forward, but I still think it’s not Star Wars without the “barump-bada-bump” Fox theme at the very start. Personally I think all Star Wars should have it, even the new ones.
Bring the Marvel Universes together: this is inevitable, isn’t it? The Marvel characters for whom Fox has historically owned the cinematic rights – principally the X-Men and Fantastic Four – are absolutely bound to appear in the MCU. Quite how and when this will happen I don’t know; I’m hoping for something a bit beyond “oh, Thanos accidentally created mutants,” if I’m honest. And I think the plans for the MCU in the early stages of Phase 4 are probably already kinda sorted (the film line-up looks like it’s taking shape, and I reckon the Skrulls will be the Big Bad of the next Avengers film, not Magneto or whoever). Really, I’m more interested in a rebooted Fantastic Four (go on, set it in the ‘60s! You know you want to!) and with Doctor Doom being a major MCU villain, the next Thanos if they do it right.
Reboot the Alien sequels: I’ve got a fair bit of time for Alien 3, and I’ve been told to give Alien: Resurrection another chance, but let’s be honest: after two masterpieces, the various Alien movies have been a seriously mixed bag. So why can’t Disney “do a Halloween” and decide to make a new Alien 3 that disregards all the other films that take place after Aliens? I mean, it sort of almost happened with Neill Blomkamp’s project, before Ridley Scott’s renewed interest in the franchise scuppered a return to the world of Hicks, Newt and – of course – Ripley. It’s currently fashionable to make “decades-later” sequels – even Ghostbusters appears to be getting one – so this could be not only fascinating but also hugely profitable. Get to it, Mickey!
Make “The X-Files: The Next Generation”: confession time, true believers: I’ve still not got round to watching the two recent X-Files mini-series, despite being an enormous “X-Phile” in the ‘90s. I know they got mixed reviews, but that’s neither here nor there to me. No, I want a regular series (but stick it on streaming so it can be gory, scary, and only 10 episodes), and I want it to feature a new raft of agents who are investigating new X-files. Maybe give Chris Carter a vanity credit and hand it off to someone else. In a lot of ways, The X-Files was the new Star Trek, so giving us a look at “the future” and the next group of people who’ll keep the flame alive, would be a good way to build the brand. And, yes, it’d still be in continuity, so Mulder could show up at some point!
Deadpool 3: I know I’ve already sorta talked about the X-Men, but that was more about incorporating and rebooting the characters within the MCU. Deadpool is a special case. He should still be Ryan Reynolds, he should still look and act the same (and, yes, he should still be R-rated). But how the fourth-wall breaking foul-mouthed ‘merc will react to being rebooted will be fascinating to see.
Stop making Die Hard films: just stop. Don’t reboot it. don’t make another sequel. Don’t do a prequel. Just stop. Do a gif search for “Simpsons he’s already dead”. Die Hard is, sadly, over. And I say that as someone who flat-out adores the first film. It has ceased to be. It is an ex-franchise. I’m sorry, Bruce, but that’s the truth.
Cancel The Simpsons: speaking of The Simpsons…! Yeah, I feel bad for saying this. As much as I love Die Hard, I love The Simpsons more; I think I love The Simpsons more than anything else Fox has ever done. And picking on them now, after thirty years? It feels like bandwagon-jumping; like trying to be cool and edgy. The fact is, I’ve not even seen a new episode for about ten years. How crazy is that? It used to be my favourite show of all time and there are probably over a hundred episodes I’ve just never seen. But that’s sort of my point. It’s not about whether it’s still good, or good enough, or as good as; it’s been going too long. the relevance it had, the cultural cachet; that’s gone for good. The Simpsons can never be The Simpsons again. I think give it a rest, cancel the series, but if you still want to keep the flame alive, make the odd movie or mini-series or TV special or something. I don’t mind more Simpsons, just make me really want it, y’know?
But bring back Futurama: as one door closes… Futurama was probably better than The Simpsons during the time it was on the air (although I don’t think I’d say it was ever quite as good as The Simpsons was at its height). So good, it’s an utter shame it had to stop when and how it did. I know Matt Groening might be busy with Disenchantment on Netflix, but maybe he can be persuaded to come back for some more journeys with the Planet Express crew? The opportunity to skewer the present day with futuristic barbs is right there for the taking.
De-Specialise the Star Wars Special Editions: I don’t mind most of the changes made by Lucas in the Special Edition trilogy. Obviously cleaning up the matting and removing the “force field” underneath Luke’s landspeeder are welcome additions. But the extra Wampa footage is unnecessary; Han shooting first really does cheapen the character, I don’t care if that’s a crying manbaby/edgelord/neckbeard/incel sorta thing to say; but the biggest flub is the utterly redundant Jabba scene they stuck back into A New Hope. Get shot of that; it gives us nothing the Greedo scene didn’t give, but clunkier and with not-entirely-convincing effects. Unaltered, and separate from the movie itself – with the human actor in a shaggy coat playing Jabba – the scene is a curio, a lost gem; but it serves no purpose in the narrative and the whole “stepping on Jabba’s tail” bit is, well, shite. If that’s the only thing they lose, fine, it’ll be worth it. I’m inevitably going to be buying these buggers in 4K, though, so I’d rather they offered a cleaned-up theatrical cut if they’re not prepared to pick-and-choose a “definitive edition”.
Don’t just close Fox Animation: from Anastasia through the Ice Age movies to Ferdinand, Fox’s animation department isn’t quite Pixar but they’ve done a really good job. Buy with Disney Animation and Pixar, does the company need another animation house? I hope they can find room for Fox, maybe as a slightly more grown-up or edgier place; after all, Pixar and Disney co-exist and there seems to be room for both.

Racialized ageism and fandom
The age of the white male character is never the problem for shipping in fandoms. The age of the white actor is never the stopping point for him being viewed as “sexy” and “desirable”. The white guys in their 60s are seen as “hot” and “shipworthy”. The age gap between the older white guy and the character he’s shipped with at the moment is never the issue.
Look all over the fandoms: Clark Gregg (62), Peter Capaldi (59), Norman Reedus (48), Colin Firth (57), Rory McCann (48), James Spader (57)… etc. etc. are in their late 40s – early 60s. Yet their characters are seen as sexually desirable and worthy of shipping not only with the characters, who are within their own age frame, but also with much younger characters:
1682 Works in Phil Coulson/Skye | Daisy Johnson
2145 Works in Twelfth Doctor/Clara Oswin Oswald
1954 Works in Daryl Dixon/Beth Greene
4312 Works in Harry Hart | Galahad/Gary “Eggsy” Unwin
2148 Works in Sandor Clegane/Sansa Stark
1048 Works in Elizabeth Keen/Raymond Reddington
Fandoms are not caging these older white male characters within the frames of a “desexualized parental figure” trope. In fact, “an older white guy x younger [usually also white] character” is a hugely popular shipping trope.
Yet, things differ drastically when the male character isn’t white (or seen as white – eg. Wentworth Miller’s Captain Cold), especially when the male character is dark-skinned. These male characters of color, who are over their 40s, are almost always invisible for fandom shipping.
For example – Joe West from The Flash. Jesse L. Martin is 48. He’s the same age as Norman Reedus, Rory McCann, he’s about a decade younger than Clark Gregg, Peter Capaldi, James Spader or Colin Firth. And yet, he’s mostly seen as an “unshippable parental figure”.
Samuel L. Jackson has prominent roles in numerous popular franchises, that have big presence in fandoms with rich shipping content – Star Wars, MCU, Kingsman… Yet, his characters are always left out of the shipping pool in these fandoms – Mace Windu is ignored; Nick Fury is seen as the “dad” figure of the avengers; and Valentine is seen as nothing more than a funny villain, even though, fandoms do love white male villains. SLJ was 51 when Mace Windu first appeared on screen, he was in his early 60s when the MCU franchise started out, SLJ is only few years older than Clark Gregg.
Or take Stacker Pentecost from Pacific Rim, played by Idris Elba. Idris Elba. Idris was 41 when PR came out. And yet, the fandom had collectively decided that the only ship suitable for a “parental figure” like Stacker is Herc Hansen. Max Martini is two years older than Idris, and yet:
322 Works in Chuck Hansen/Hercules Hansen  vs. 3 Works in Chuck Hansen/Stacker Pentecost
147 Works in Raleigh Becket/Hercules Hansen vs. 10 Works in Raleigh Becket/Stacker Pentecost
52 Works in Hercules Hansen/Mako Mori
Worth noting that the incest father/son ship with Hansens is more popular than Hercules Hansen/Stacker Pentecost, which only has 288 works in total. Raleigh had more on-screen connection with Stacker than he had with Herc; Chuck and Stacker died together while trying to save the world. Together in Death is a hugely popular shipping trope all across fandoms, for example Enjolras/Grantaire from Les Misérables had 3 seconds of total screen time together in the movie, and they have ~9k of fics on AO3 alone…
Another one is Luke Garroway from the Shadowhunters, played by Isaiah Mustafa (43). Have you seen Isaiah? Yeah, I know. And yet, he is also seen almost as some “grandpa” figure of the group. Often people use his age as an excuse for excluding him from most fanon activities involving the main group of characters – not just shipping, but also: group fanvids, group edits etc. The only ships involving Luke that are accepted and supported by the fandom are with Jocelyn and Maryse. And I often see people in tags saying that any other ships with Luke are “creepy” and “uncomfortable” because he’s the “dad” of the group. I agree about the creepy factor with, say Clary and Simon… but others? - Not so much.
And, yeah, I would’ve agreed with this fandom “activism” if it wasn’t so hypocritical. Remember Rupert Giles from BTVS? Who also was the “father figure” of the Scooby Gang? Anthony Head was 43 at the start of the show and 49 when it ended. And yet, I don’t remember BTVS fandom excluding Giles at every turn because of his age:
645 Works in Rupert Giles/Buffy Summers
351 Works in Rupert Giles/Ethan Rayne
254 Works in Rupert Giles/Xander Harris
182 Works in Rupert Giles/Wesley Wyndam-Pryce
155 Works in Rupert Giles/Joyce Summers
67 Works in Rupert Giles/Faith Lehane
Compare to Luke’s ships:
185 Works in Jocelyn Fairchild/Luke Garroway
19 Works in Luke Garroway/Maryse Lightwood
6 Works in Luke Garroway/Alaric Rodriguez
4 Works in Luke Garroway/Valentine Morgenstern
4 Works in Magnus Bane/Luke Garroway
2 Works in Luke Garroway/Alec Lightwood
Speaking of Shadowhunters, people also often try to put Magnus in the same “father figure” frames – anti-Malec (J@lecs, Cl@lecs etc.) people, who ship Alec with everything white that moves, always try to insinuate that Magnus is borderline a pedophile because he’s dating Alec.
After all, I don’t see the Torcwood fandom acting as if Jack Harkness (an immortal who lived through ages and generations) is some unshippable “dad” figure, who can’t be shipped with other members of the team. I haven’t seen people there saying that Jack is a “creep” for dating Ianto (just for the record: the age gap between John and Gareth is 14 years vs. 5 years between Matt and Harry).
I’m not suggesting that people need to start shipping Luke or Magnus with the younger characters, what I am saying is that, had Luke and Magnus been portrayed by white actors, people wouldn’t have been putting them in the frames of “parental figures” of the group as much. And yeah, I love the dad!Luke and dad!Magnus headcanons as much as the next person, but let’s also be honest that we’re not living in a vacuum, the race can’t be taken out of the equation.
These are just a few examples, but this is happening all across fandoms. And not just with MoC – take Shirley Bennett from Community. Yvette Nicole Brown is of the same age as is Joel McHale – they’re both 45 now and were in their late 30s when the show first aired. And yet, both the show and the fandom treated Shirley as if she was some “grandma” and Chevy Chase’ peer (who was in his late 60s back then).

Sigyn MCU Headcanon - Part One
I have a MCU canon-compliant headcanon which explains where Sigyn has been and why she hasn’t appeared on screen. It’s a long story that I want to write as a fic, but I would never finish because it is so very long. It’s three seasons of an imagined Avengers Assembled tv series with Carter and Friends that starts in the 60s. Then at least one season of a Netflix Journey into Mystery tv series.
Per @pokemon-james-bond’s request, I am typing out the headcanon details which, are themselves, fairly long. (I’m sure I could condense it to five paragraphs but this is too vivid in my mind, I need to get it out somehow).
I will be posting it in parts, and there will be a TL;DR at the end.
  Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7 | Part 8 | Part 9 | Part 10 | TL;DR
 Avengers Assembled Season One Episodes 1, 2, & 3
Episode One: The year is 1960-something (between 1962 and 1969) and SHIELD is doing its thing. Peggy is awesome. Stark is drunk. Jarvis is quietly judging. You know the drill.
Anyway, in the first episode everything is going great, but wait, there is a new bad buy, things are getting sketchy, must investigate! A potential threat is neutralized, but is the mystery really solved? All signs point to an otherworldly mastermind. Sousa, who never got the see the things Peggy did in the war (aka the Kree body), is all ‘yeah, but there is no such thing as aliens.’
Cue a final shot of the desert with the Bifrost etched symbols and a woman lying on the ground. She gets up, looks around, and starts walking towards the only source of light: Las Vegas.
Episode Two: The woman, who is Sigyn but the audience doesn’t know that yet, has walked into Las Vegas. She doesn’t look decked out like a typical Asgardian, looks almost homeless. She watches everything around her, seeing that food is given in exchanged for paper, and the tv’s in the window are showing Sara Lee ads.
Sigyn ends up walking down an alley and someone calls out to her, creeping on her. She flicks her wrist and nothing happens, to which sighs, “This is going to get annoying.”
Meanwhile, creepy dude is fast approaching, but then gets body tackled by another guy and taken down. New guy is an army vet, you can tell by his coat, we’ll call him Cleo. He warns Sigyn that this isn’t a good place for young ladies, but he realizes she’s probably newly homeless, and invites her to an encampment. She sees said coat and asks him if he’s a warrior, and Cleo’s like “I guess you can call me that.”
As a good Asgardian, she trusts the warrior and follows Cleo to a homeless encampment. They are very nice to her, offer her food and a blanket, just being nice people who understand what it’s like to have nothing. Many are Korean War vets. Sigyn is confused as to why they aren’t being cared for, they are warriors after all, had seen battle, they should want for nothing.
When they ask Sigyn her name, she hesitates because she doesn’t know how much of Midgard knows/remembers about Asgard. She says her name is Sara (yes, I did that on purpose). They ask her where she is from and one guy says “It’s obvious she’s English.” Another says “No, I served with the English in (something). Obviously she’s Australian, right?” Sigyn is more than happy not to correct him. So yeah, sure, she’s Sara… of Australia, whatever that is.
Meanwhile, Sousa is on a different case for SHIELD (homeless have been going missing) and heads to Las Vegas. (He actually showed up earlier, yay integrated scene edits.) But he was asking questions he shouldn’t and gets himself kidnapped that night.
Next day, everything is going fine. Sigyn subtly moves something heavy for the encampment (a visual cue to show she still has strength, just not magic). But then the camp is attacked. Cleo tells her to hide, he’ll draw away the attackers (who are using tranc guns). He goes down. A little clever editing and the attackers are like “you missed one” and pick up another sleeping body, aka Sigyn.
At the secret lair of the kidnappers, Sigyn, who was never actually tranc’d, “wakes up” and makes a fuss, like a very panicky fuss, so they take her into the main room to be processed first to just get rid of her. Once she’s established that this is the extent of this particular operation (homeless are being grabbed to be sold as test subjects for subplot you don’t need to know about), Sigyn says “Okay, good, that’s all I needed to know.” Then proceeds to knock everyone the fuck out.
It’s clear she’s not a trained fighter. She basically bats people around because she’s stronger than them and they can’t hurt her. Sousa is in a room, being interrogated, when shouts are heard. His interrogator goes outside only to get thrown back into the room. Sigyn sticks her head in.
Sigyn: “I should untie you.”  Sousa: "Yes, please, I work for SHIELD.” Sigyn: “Is that some kind of military detachment?”
Sousa has no idea who is the woman is, she’s supper strong and bit strange. He followers her back into the main room. He comments that she’s only knocked people out, she hasn’t killed anyone (not that he’s complaining, it’s just set up for what happens next). Sigyn explains that most of these men are just hired fighters and while they should be punished for their impropriety they should not also be punished for the sins of those who would direct them to do such things in the first place.
Then one of them slams a chair into her back as he yells bitch. This does little more than make her rock on her feet.
Sigyn: “Of course, there are always exceptions.”
Cut scene to said guy being thrown out the window. (Yay, character building moment!)
Sousa is completely ‘I can’t even’ right now. Sigyn grabs two duffle bags which holds lots and lots of that paper she saw earlier. She goes to the holding pens now that the bad guys have been neutralized and the trancs have worn off. Getting everyone out, she stops Cleo and hands him one of the duffels. She thanks him for being a noble person, for sharing with a stranger when he had little of his own (nod to mythology when gods did stuff for people who were nice to them when they didn’t know they were gods).
Sigyn takes the second duffle and bids her farewell, disappearing outside behind convenient set pieces. Sousa askes Cleo, who was that? Cleo, who has just looked in the bag and seen the stacks of cash, can only go wide eyed and say “Sara, of Australia.”
Sousa goes back to SHIELD explaining that while his case of the missing homeless is solved, now there is some super soldier, from Australia, running around. They didn’t even know Australia had a super soldier program!
End scene is Sigyn standing in a boutique playing with a pair of sunglasses, “Are Midgardian eyes so sensitive? Oh well, as they say, when in Vanaheim.” She walks out, she’s in LA (or somewhere thereabouts), dressed in fashionable blue with gold accent clothing, carrying shopping bags, and basically looking like someone who has their shit together.
Episode Three: Introduces Janet but you only want the Sigyn bits of this series and OMG I’ve already topped 1k words I hope this counts for NaNo.
  Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7 | Part 8 | Part 9 | Part 10 | TL;DR

So I just read Jonathan Hickman's Avgers, Vol. 1: Avengers World which has that scene about how "it started with two men; one was life and one was death" in reference to Steve and Tony. What really confuses me and kind of makes me angry is why Tony is death? I don't really understand what it's referencing or what he's done to be Death. Like merchant of death and all that I get. But he's past his history now right? Even poetically in an avengers comic why is he still death? Wondering if you know?
i mean,,,,,,, i know fandom was briefly up in arms about this (not really but it was a Thing ppl were mildly salty about) but hickman never specifies who he’s referring to here. (the placement of the captions means nothing lmao, it’s literally just positioned in standard left-to-right reading order.) and actually, many ppl in fandom have taken that exact ambiguity and spun it on its head in edits and fics and especially re: mcu after ca: cw to cast steve as death, and tony as life as an interesting subversion of popular understanding of that quote where 616 tony = death, 616 steve = life.
hickman’s writing style is very much about intense concept ideas and the big picture, he goes HARD on metaphors that make for great quotes and oneliners taken out of context but doesn’t often attempt to explain or further clarify what they mean. as someone who’s read most of his original comic east of west over at image, i can tell you it’s Classic Hickman to throw out that kind of dramatic ass statement and leave it up in the air as to who’s who just because it was memorable, it sounded fucking good, and it’s going to stick in people’s heads long after they’ve finished reading. and it definitely works bc this one ticks all three boxes.
personally, i don’t think hickman specifically intended one of them to be Life personified or Death personified; that’s hyperbolic even for hickman’s level of drama. and with steve and tony, at least, i think he knows full well that he’s dealing with Humans at the end of the day and not metaphorical embodiments of things.
so what i think about the quote, specifically:
1. it’s more useful as an axiomatic representation of tony and steve as polarising forces then as a literal statement where both correlate exactly to life or death; this is the unstoppable force meets immovable object facet of their relationship.
hickman’s vol. 5 was very much about exploring and interrogating this part of steve and tony’s dynamic and driving it to its very limits. while i don’t know that i was totally satisfied with vol. 5 as an avengers comic bc i like seeing my kids get along and not constantly trying to murder each other, hickman definitely Gets steve and tony. he Gets their dynamic and the drama and tragedy that can come from such an important, intense and deeply profound relationship that’s grounded in so much history and personal stakes and emotions. tony and steve being best friends for over a decade and such important figures in each other’s lives will never negate the fact that they have very different ethical alignments and moral philosophies. and for two people who are absolutely compelled by those things in everything they do, going head to head with someone that happens to land at the polar opposite of them on the spectrum is always going to go down like… well… y’know. civil wars. universes dying. just bc that’s literally how much marvel has invested in them lol.
but i respect people / characters who respect themselves too much to bend just bc someone they love, or people they love, wants them to. i respect characters that will stand their ground and stick to their convictions even though it’d be easier not to, esp. when they’re risking someone they love. and conversely, just because steve and tony can’t agree on everything doesn’t mean their relationship suddenly becomes null and void. they’re too vastly similar but also different people who’d sooner die then stop fighting for the thing(s) they believe need to be fought for; this is something they know in their bones about each other, they know each other too well to expect anything less from the other person.
2. they can both be both. and this is Literal given that steve’s last act in the final moments of the 616 universe ‘as we knew it’ (bc there’s some debate – spoiler alert? – that the all-new all-different universe that marvel is currently set in is not 616 but a completely different universe and the 616 that existed before is legitimately just dead) was to take one of tony’s suits and try to murder him. granted, the ‘tony’ that was tony in the final moments of the 616 universe ‘as we knew it’ was also Not Really Tony, and i fully believe that the influences of Superior Tony were still lingering and tainting his overall Tonyness. in that instance, if you were going to be very simplistic and reductionist abt your interpretation of the quote, steve was definitely death. but Again, they are Both Both. tony spent (spends lbr) pretty much all his time in vol. 5 prophesizing death and destruction like 616′s very own cassandra; as Not Really Tony / still sorta superior iron man he pilots the godkiller to massacre an entire alien race from invading and destroying earth; building bombs, and being fully behind the plan to kill other planets to save earth-616.
you’re right that 616 doesn’t bring up his past as often as mcu does anymore because it’s considered literal ancient history (as in bronze age 60′s history that’s been written to death, although i’m of the opinion any good tony stark writer Can and Will find a way to write his past into modern relevance). tony’s narrative and the nature of his character, however, (sb driven by guilt and accountability and the knowledge that he’s alive bc of the sacrifice of a man who died to save him – i.e. yinsen) will always inevitably feature death, his history, and his subsequent transformation. talking about 616 and specfiically tony’s actions and choices in hickmanvengers doesn’t really help my point but to talk about tony + death in general, regardless of the universe, ‘death’ also doesn’t have to be the BadTM concept it’s usually thought of as. mcu tony canonically refers to himself as a phoenix, and the Afghanistan / Vietnamistan incident is metaphorically a ‘death’ for tony stark the charcter and his rebirth as Iron Man, the Golden Avenger. in any universe, tony’s hero narrative hinges on that rebirth and transformation as a symbol of his capacity for heroism and Goodness, of taking his ugly past and former ignorance and mistakes and transforming it into something wholly and purely driven by bravery and sacrifice.
i mean, yes, sure, if ppl are going to sit there and only take the label at face-value: death = bad / awful / terrible / only referring to his past as a weapons manufacturer and merchant of death, then yes, that would be a shitty interpretation to swallow as a tony fan. but seeing as how comics is a medium that’s built on constantly evolving and changing characters / worlds / entire universes, death as ‘rebirth’ is a very justifiable and canonically valid reading of tony. 616 tony has died multiple times, literally and figuratively, and every time he’s rebuilt himself bigger and better and stronger. the connotations of death within hickman’s own narrative and world-building is heavily linked to metamorphosis and resurrection. the final act of his avengers run and the centrepiece of the secret war event ended with the revival of the 616 universe. not to get too philosophical and existential here but death isn’t even really an End in the comics medium bc nobody and nothing ever permanently ‘dies’; it’s not possible to associate the concept with a definitive ‘end’, which makes most of the negative imagery surrounding ‘one was death’ redundant. i’m all for intrepretations of ‘death’ that are closely interlinked, if not entirely hand-in-hand, with ideas of rebirth, rebuilding, evolution, etc.
anyway, avengers world is great and i fucking love it so even if i haven’t swayed your opinion, i wouldn’t let the quote override your enjoyment of the overall comic. which, i hope you do enjoy, bc the happiness doesn’t last in hickmanvengers. buckle in for the long haul my guy.
