We need to cool it with the "people have no media literacy" spiels for real. Surely you can tell people they are wrong in one instance without presuming it's representative of a larger problem with their behavior and reaction to media.
We all say stupid things some times, stop fundamentally attributing their behavior to a lack of intelligence and lumping them into categories.
It doesn't make you superior; it's actually pretty exhausting, lacks compassion, and demonstrates that you, yourself, are incapable of critical analysis without going to extremes.

ngl, I'm beginning to take issue with how in conversations about anti-intellectualism almost automatically, the face of girls and women will be slapped on the problem.

#‘‘A white mourning. A modern death. Divorce or something similar. All you can do is put more distance between you & him. make him smaller.’’#jean is a very easy character to hate if you know nothing about him. & you know what they say. easy target doesn’t make for a good practice#judit literally compares harry to intellectually disabled man yet you don’t see ppl hating her because she is outwardly nice.#she’s polite yes but she doesn’t care as much as jean cares for harry#he is not perfect. he is mean. but loyal. if he truly didn't care he wouldn't hab come back to martinaise & coulda just reported harry’s as#he put up with du bois’ bullshit for years and built a toxic (totally straight) relationship with him yet always comes back.#he says he will leave you in the village to die but please understand harry isn't exactly a great person. especially pre-bender hdb.#planned a make up joke & put on a wig for hdb even tho he wasn’t the who started the whole fiasco#you can hate him all you want for leaving harry before & during tribunal but how could he have foreseen all this bullshit would have happen#his second leaving is kinda bullshit writing but#jv is dealing with his own demons too. clinical depression. partner almost died. job is shit. case spiraling out control#i do not blame the DE staff either. sometimes shit just happens. not everything needs a grand explanation.#but it definitely coulda been handled better. but i understand. resources were sparse.#i relate to jv. as someone with temper issues & attention problems i have to remove myself from the scene or i'll say shit i'd regret late#my man is having the worst week of his life. leave him alone.#kim is great but have u heard of a man who thinks he's old when he is only 30 & luvs horses & his commie boyfriend that he's divorcin' soon#disco elysium#de fanart#jean vicquemare#disco elysium fanart#jean heron vicquemare#jean posting#illustration#de#artists on tumblr#my art#I WANTED TO DRAW THIS FOR MONTHSSS YOU COULDN'T IMAGINE. Fucking hate how in stories (both mainstream media and fanfic) someone nearly dies or is thought lost, but then turns up changed with brain damage or some kind of disability. And their family and friends, instead of being happy the person they loved is alive and returned to them, they just start mourning the version of them they knew. "Please God let them live!" but then "No wait not like that". And then it's all about the tragedy of them "having to see" the one they supposedly loved changed and impaired, instead of gratitude for their life or focus on their thoughts and feelings in their disabled state. Like that one horrible TV show said: "I don't know what I'll do if this is all that's left of the person I love."
"All that's left." Disabled people being hollow shells instead of different versions of themselves who are still as important, who can feel happiness and joy and love. Once cognitively impaired we're less than human, the mourned living.
I know that "love is not love that alters when it alteration finds" is incomprehensible to abled people, whose compassion and care is inherently conditional, but at least once I'd like to see a story that said "as long as they're alive, we can figure out the rest". It's a very strange kind of love that can't grant you enough humanity to at least be happy that you're alive.

i need my kevjean freaky and weird and obsessive and worrying to the general public
abso-fucking-lutely i need it to be oppressive to be around them. i need it to be a breathing living thing you can feel if you step into their orbit. like it HAS to be bad and it HAS to be awkward and you HAVE to feel like you're intruding on something even if you've known them for years. i need kevjean to be something the trojans do a wellness check on jean for. i need kevjean to feel like a karmic debt they will have to keep paying for the rest of their lives. you know? it has to be weird. it HAS to be weird

I feel like there's been an increase in emotional immaturity because there are so many people who make choices based on what other people think instead of thinking about their choices and evaluating what it is *they* want in their *own* lives. And some of these choices require an individual to take a step back and put thought into them.
Like, I think the reason the "manosphere" got so huge within the past couple of years is because there has almost never been any encouragement for men and boys to take time to themselves and think, 'My grandfather and my father found a wife by the time they were 21, but is that really what *I* want? And if it is, *why* do I want it?' And because no one ever told them that this was something they could do--that they didn't have to follow in their fathers' footsteps and do everything like they did if they didn't want to, it was easier to respond to women's rejection with hostility. Men and boys were taught that this was the natural order of things, and by rejecting them, women were cheating them out of fulfilling their purpose. And even though I have my problems with the most recent wave of feminism that developed in the mid-late 2010s, I think what this wave demonstrated was the ability more women have to develop a community, and I think this comes from the fact that it's more socially acceptable for women to talk with one another about their feelings. As a result, there was a nearly collective agreement among women of this movement that women, especially in a time where more opportunities are available to us, should be able to live our lives the way we want to and worry less about what men think about our choices. It was easier for us to get to a place of self-acceptance.
I think one of the most tragic things about toxic masculinity is that these spaces are so anti-intellectual that critical thinking is not allowed. Any thoughts about women being listened to or thoughts about 'what if this isn't really what I want?' or 'maybe I *do* want this, but not for the *right* reasons' are met with scorn--because that's not how 'real' men are supposed to think--the mansophere teaches that men are nothing but cavemen with peabrains who lack the ability to respect themselves or women. And the irony of this kind of teaching is that it is taught simultaneously with the idea that men are more intellectually developed than women and know more about what women want than we do ourselves. None of it makes any sense, and I think a few people stuck in the cult of the manosphere know this, but the desire to be accepted by these "alphas" weighs more to them than improving their outlook on life by questioning things.

ok but the thing is that "hurt" is an adjective, verb, and noun. so the linguistic poeticism is still there, albeit in a slightly different way. yes, "hurt" as a description of a person's state holds true across tenses because it is indeed an adjective, but the fact remains that it's a lexicologically interesting word! personally, what i find really neat is that "hurt" is both an intransitive verb used for the person being wounded and a transitive verb for the act of wounding someone. it's an intriguing concept to think of pain as something that draws connections between people. something that weaves together victim and perpetrator in some inseparable way. that you can't hurt someone without it changing you as well. idk what exactly that says about pain as a human experience, and it's a lot of using imagination and metaphor to extract and extend meaning from language, but it's still fascinating!

Man on one hand FF13 really is that bad, as much as I love how it looks the levelling system and gameplay is kind of broken on a foundational level, but on the other hand so much 13 hate was predicated on being as much of a hateful cunt as possible about Lightning and looking back I feel like a lot of it was steeped in bullshit double standards and abject misogyny.
Like I used to post in a Final Fantasy thread and whenever Lightning came up, one specific person would deadass go "Lightning was a horrible person who abused everyone, and the game would be better if she died halfway through and nobody cared". Every time she came up.
I remember people saying they bastardised SOLDIER to make her more reminiscent of Cloud, they bastardised the scorpion fight from FF7 and made the fight borderline unloseable to hype her up because she's a bland Mary Sue who needs character shilling, she's just a retread of Cloud and Squall etc. And while I'm critical of FF13, I've always been bugged by the character hate (including for Hope) and I feel like a lot of it comes from this cultural well of like Nostalgia Critic-esque dickhead internet criticism that people seemingly couldn't communicate at all without dipping into.
Like, Lightning starts the game off being incredibly blunt, punching her sister's fiance and encouraging someone to enact revenge. Not even a quarter of the way through the game, she has a change of heart and she begins to open up more, and she subsequently tries her best to dissuade that character from enacting revenge. So much of the hate stems from the start of her character arc while ignoring how she improves as a person, and that only fuels the whole "shitty Mary Sue Cloud Squall rehash" internet criticism thing where a bunch of dickheads have to try and one-up each other's criticisms by being even more of a fuckface than the last guy.
Now, that's not to say that criticism of Lightning is solely done through that lens, nor is it to say that there's nothing else to criticize about her. What I'm saying is that there's a lot of loud dumbass complaints that defined FF13 for years that stems from a really toxic, shitty place and - in hindsight - it feels like on top of the toxic influence within the online sphere of game criticism of the time, a lot of that shit feels like it's rooted in misogyny.
It's always bothered me, and going back to the game today, it's kind of hard to sit through the opening without remembering the absolute chuddery of FF13 criticism back in the day. The game is very flawed, and I understand that character writing and personal enjoyment is subjective, but there's a difference between articulate and meaningful criticism and getting blindingly mad because they made Lightning do a bunch of badass flips in the opening cutscene and ignoring her entire character arc to call her an entitled bitch, y'know.
#final fantasy 13#final fantasy#lightning farron#as a postscript - yeah the opening scorpion boss fight was a load of shit. glitz and polish that was all bark no bite#and while some of that can be chalked up to the fight being s tutorial I also think it's mired with a lot of flaws that the later game has#it would have been a cakewalk with any other character. part of that is by design but it's also kind of getting things off on the wrong foot#at least imo#and that's a broader criticism of the game and how streamlined the combat system is#where you're pushing a single button to win. and I fo remember the formations#but then there's another issue where it feels like there's an objectively correct formation to use for bosses#where if you deviate you just lose and if you get the right combination of classes - again you just press a single button to win#or like go through the exact same motions in a rhythm. I don't like that#so like yeah the combat and enemy stuff and all that - I'm critical of that#I don't think calling lightning a mary sue because her and sazh beat it as the tutorial monster is a reasonable criticism#i think it's a broader issue with the game and that reading completely misses what's actually wrong with the game#it's intellectually lazy and a total copout#it's like tlou 2 or the jodie whittaker seasons of doctor who all over again where there's a real conversation to be had#and actual reasonable criticisms to be made#but the criticism of the thing is so toxic and hostile and in such bad faith that having that conversation is next to impossible#because 'this is an aspect of the thing I'm critical of' exists in the same space where some wanker is screaming about lesbians and wokism

Lycanthropy noun (ly·can·thro·py)
Filed under: disease, monstrous; monster, bestial; Lycan, Order of the.
A disease in which infected individuals become able to physically transform at will into an animal, usually a mammalian predator (wolf, bear, tiger, etc.). Infection occurs through either a deep bite wound or through the consumption of lycanthropic blood.
Infection is incredibly painful, and can be fatal to weaker individuals.
Individuals infected with lycanthropy gain immense speed and strength; experts estimate lycanthropes to be a Threat Level Eight. Approach with extreme caution. Effects of lycanthropy also include heightened agression, irratability, and violence.
A now defunct Bloodhunting Order, the Order of the Lycan, was said to purposefully infect initiated Hunters with lycanthropy as a means of increasing their hunting prowess. The Order collapsed due to unknown causes, likely as a result of the side effects of the disease.
-- definition taken from The Bloodhunter's Guide to Combating Monstrous Creatrures, fifth edition.

I hate toxic Fan Bro nerds and Debate Bros, I hate how manipulative they are in every conversation, I hate how they will shamelessly tell the most brazen and obvious lies, and the more you call them on it the more they'll double down, I hate their condescension and passive aggression, I hate their bigotry and how they're basically Alt. Reich/incels but pretend that because they're nerds on the internet they're more liberal intelligent than your average red cap-wearing MAGA, I hate how they will twist your words and shift the goal posts and use every trick they can just so they can score points and boast that they won a petty debate that makes them feel important, and I hate that the more I hate them, the more I behave like them in return.
I really need to learn that you can't argue with them. Unfortunately, the slippery fucks will sometimes start out sounding semi-reasonable and rope you in before they start lying and twisting your words and shifting goalposts, and at that point you either have to suck it up and walk away, in which case they'll crow that you have no evidence and have lost the argument because you refuse to back up you points, or argue back and get drawn into the bottomless mire.
Christ, there is no creature more infuriating than an internet nerd bent on proving their superiority by gatekeeping their favourite media that they hate every part of except the one part they think "real fans" like.

The worst thing about anti-intellectualism is its superficiality.
Not that superficiality is inherently bad, but anti-intellectualism is glorifying it in a way in which it allows no room for introspection; there is no longer space for debate about feelings or actions, which are labelled and left unexamined, remaining forever flat.

ahh i see, thank you so much for answering!
i also wanted to actually commend you for the piece you did on Nancy awhile back and how you're kind of stuck at the age you were when losing your best friend - it's not long but you just captured all the grief and emotional repression that comes from that experience and it personally really moved me so, thank you for sharing💌
thank you so much for saying that-- Nancy and Barb's relationship and Nancy's grief in the aftermath is something that's so important to me and I think about it!! all the time!!
like that is one of the major foundations of her character and I wish we all (the duffers cough cough) talked about it more because it deserves to be acknowledged.
