Current sample sheets and a couple pics of the liquid i've been using as watercolor, all extracted from purple iris or common violet in slightly different ways, and pH altered to give different colors due to anthocyanins (which i have been reading a bunch about and they ended up being a lot more complex than expected, and deserve their own text-heavy post, this is merely a pretty pictures post to prove i'm alive)

😔I have been painting a lot of Iris these past few weeks. I have been painting so many, because they are the first thing I think of when I think of my Aunt Kathy. She passed away just over a month ago. She was a wonderful woman - one of the best! She worried for and looked after so many. She was an advocate of self-care and good mental health long before it was fashionable. She is so dearly missed. I hope there is some wonderful afterlife, as I am sure she will be there doing what she can to make it an even brighter place. 😇

While she was here, she used her amazing Auntie Powers, to check in with us younger generation of our family because she knew how hostile an environment it could be. She never turned her back on anyone that I know of, but rather she'd give you the last of what she had if she thought you needed it. She had such grace and poise, I always wanted to be like her.

She is the person I think of when I think back to the warm and loving arms of 'mommy.' She looked after me as a small child, and I spent a large amount of time with her and my uncle from 2-6yrs old. As a result, I was able to experience incredible motherly love and tenderness. Which I have carried with me, and tried to show all my kiddos - birthed by me or otherwise.

Her memorial was more of a chance for her church to preach their message and less about celebrating her life - her Whole Life. I mention this because is has really hampered the feeling of closure for me and others in my family, and thus we end up back at the top with me painting lots of Iris in her honor. I miss her so terribly, and I wish I had talked with her more over the past few years. I hope she knows how much I love her. Please remember to tell those you love that you do, and tell them often. You never know if you'll see them again.
