Thanks to Sourcebooks Fire for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review
✩🃏🕰️Review:
“What Happens After Midnight” tore me apart and then put me right back together again!
I was invested in Lily and Tag at the very outset and held on to hope that they would be able to mend their relationship by the novel’s end. Walther’s newest release is written solely from Lily Hopper’s point-of-view as she embarks on one last adventure with the senior class jester, who just so happens to be her ex-boyfriend Tag, in stealing the class yearbooks. As one of the jester’s fools, Lily works with Tag to leave clues hinting at the yearbooks’ whereabouts around campus for the senior class president to find. Visiting certain locations on campus trigger memories about her past relationship with Tag, shedding light on the whirlwind romance they once had and what led to their eventual split. Lily vows that once the night is over, she will put her past with Tag behind her. The more time she spends with him, however, the harder she falls for him all over again. Little does she know that Tag orchestrated the whole night in an attempt to win her back.
Walther creates an immersive experience by ensuring that her fictional boarding school is representative of real schools by creating diverse characters that are a part of the student population, which I greatly admired. Walther spreads awareness about diabetes through Tag, who has a type 1 diagnosis, and gives her readers opportunities to see themselves in her characters and their different cultural backgrounds and sexual orientations.
Like her debut novel, “What Happens After Midnight” is formatted in a unique way. Each section of the book is separated by the different clues Tag and Lily hide as part of their senior prank. Walther also sprinkles in Taylor Swift references throughout the book, further drawing me in and contributing to its playful atmosphere.
➤ 5 stars

Book Blurb: Lily Hopper has two more weeks until she's officially finished with boarding school. With graduation quickly approaching Lily is worried that she's somehow missed out on the fun of being in high school. So, when she receives a mysterious note inviting her to join the anonymous senior class Jester in executing the end-of-year prank, Lily sees her chance to put her goody-two-shoes reputation behind her. When Lily realizes the Jester is none other than Taggart Swell, her ex- boyfriend, she's already in too deep to back out. Lily might've dumped Tag, but she still has major feelings. Plus, his brilliant plan to steal the school's yearbooks, targets none other than Lily's prom date: the Senior Class President, Daniel. As the group of pranksters hide cryptic clues across campus for Daniel to find, Lily and Tag find themselves in close quarters. As the exes dodge Campus Safety guards, night owl teachers, a troop of freshmen, and even Daniel himself, new sparks fly. But old hurts and painful secrets refuse to be ignored. And with graduation on the horizon, Lily can only hope that breaking the rules will help mend her heart.
Review:
With graduation coming up two exes find themselves working together to not only pull off the ultimate prank but work out why they really broke up in the first place and what their feelings for each other are. Lily Hopper has two more weeks until boarding school is done, she’s the daughter of a teacher and a great student. Lily has only few regrets as the school year is ending, that she didn’t have as much fun in her final year of school... and her ex boyfriend Taggart Swell, the one that broke her heart. When Lily receives a mysterious email to join in on the end of year prank thrown by a chosen Jester, she thinks its the perfect time to get out of her goody-two-shoes ex... except when she comes face to face with this year’s Jester it’s Tag. Tag, the one guy she still has feelings for and who somehow has made this year’s prank target the guy who asked Lily to prom. Now Tag and Lily, along with a few other friends will spend the night planning a scavenger prank all the while Tag and Lily will actually be talking to each other for once after their breakup... and all this time together, alone, in close proximity, bantering, and recalling old memories... the sparks begin to fly again... but can the old hurts and painful secrets, the insecurities of their relationship really be fixed or was it just for one night only? This book was filled with Taylor Swift references, and is perfect for fans of second chance romances, prank romances, Luke and Lorelai vibes, and has some Schitts Creek references. This one just fell flat for me, usually I adore a fun second chance romance with pranks, but Lily and Tag just didn’t really work as a couple getting back together for me. I understand they both had huge miscommunication issues but come on, I’m suppose to think they wouldn’t have fixed it despite how in love with each other they were and then how fast Tag just wanted to “get over” and “distract himself” with a new girlfriend. Tag just didn’t really appeal to me as a love interest for Lily. So while this one fell a bit flat for me and missed the mark, if you are a fan of any of the above mentioned tropes and themes, then definitely give it a go. I think its the perfect read for fans of Taylor Swift and second chance romances.
*Thanks Netgalley and SOURCEBOOKS Fire, Sourcebooks Fire for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*

What Happens After Midnight-By K. L. Walther
Overall:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
I definitely will read this again and I recommend this!
MY FAVORITE K L WALTHER BOOK!! This book was so so good. There were a few scenes that weren't the cleanest but never details. The only thing I didn't like was that it was mainly in the span of 1 night but then the rest of that week.
This review is long over due, I had one chapter left then got covid (i dont read when im sick) and I finished this a while ago so I'm very sorry this is so late

Ok but am I the only one who sees how Sega/The Sonic Team used yesterday's Eclipse as a starting point to Shadow's year? Ok like,
During the eclipse, you were able to see the silhouette of the moon due to the sun's light from behind, almost like a spotlight but it creates a shadow only on one side.
Sonic is always in the spotlight, or represented as light symbolically. Shadow, the darkness, but there can't be darkness/a shadow without light. Therefore, he sometimes lets the light in, if it really reaches his heart.
I see this as Sonic letting his spotlight shine on (his) Shadow to let people see who he really is, rather than just a thing or someone unimportant, or just a copy of himself. To recognize his existence because all his life he's been fighting and trying to find his purpose in the world. Sonic thinks Shadow deserves that, even if it's only for a while.
I just really like how either the timing was perfect, perfectly planned, or I'm just hallucinating-

sits up in bed. so lana and ema definitely thought they were responsible for edgeworth "choosing death", right?
(the rest of this post was supposed to go in the tags, because it's not very well organised or written, but it got too long so. here are the slightly edited tags for your reading pleasure (or otherwise)):
i was going to make this solely about ema because she's the obvious one with her open adoration of edgeworth, but the thing about rfta is that it goes to great lengths to emphasise the connection between lana and edgeworth as well.
the sl-9 incident showed that lana grows attached to people deeply, hence angel starr's comment on how, when neil marshall died, 'she (lana) felt like her own brother had died.' with edgeworth, i think it was similar but worse. because he's not just a coworker or subordinate who's dear to her. he saved her life. and it cost him his own.
at the beginning of the case, edgeworth says he was mistaken for thinking that lana was always looking out for him post sl-9 (a statement interesting on its own because that's when everyone else says she grew distant), and, later on, he brings ema fingerprinting powder because lana asked him to. then, of course, there's the 'lady luck' comment he makes.
similarly, on lana's side, you obviously have the end of the trial when she says he did well, but there's also that additional moment post-trial where she's the only one to notice — in a group comprising her, ema, phoenix and gumshoe — that he's 'hiding', listening to their conversation. point is, there's enough to suggest that she might have been the nearest thing edgeworth had to a mia; his 'chief prosecutor' to phoenix's plain 'chief'. they're as close as two people can be in a relationship where one of them is constantly lying and the other is von karma's star pupil.
rfta is pretty straightforwardly depicted as the case which solidified edgeworth's resolve to do what he did; i don't think i have to prove that. rumours about him have reached new heights, his car and knife were involved in goodman's murder, he makes an unprecedented mistake in court by failing to connect the evidence room and carpark incidents, thus forcing the chief of police to enter the trial to do so himself, and he's publicly revealed to have relied on falsified evidence to secure a conviction in the sl-9 case, all of which only happened because of lana. jake marshall even claims that from the beginning — that if you trace edgeworth's rumours back to their source, you end up meeting one person: lana skye.
and it gets worse because at the end of rfta, she thinks he's fine!! she literally says, 'i was afraid the pressure would break you, but you rose above it,' and reminds him he's nothing like gant because he's not alone. she leaves the case thinking he will be okay. and then, what, like a week passes, and she finds out that he wasn't, and that he's gone, and it's her fault. even after she was freed from gant's control, even after she had finally stopped lying, she couldn't prevent herself from claiming another life. so much for 'lady luck', i suppose.
and the game reiterates this multiple times. gumshoe states at the start that edgeworth's ties to those higher up in the department have made him the subject of constant rumours, and phoenix says (in front of ema) that he shouldn't be held responsible for the forged evidence because that was all lana's doing, which then leads to edgeworth commenting (again in front of ema) that he feels as though 'something inside him has died.' it all goes back to lana. we can argue and say that it was technically gant's doing that caused all of this, but lana still took actions that led to it. even her complicated friendship with edgeworth isn't spared; it's that closeness between them that exacerbated those rumours. how could she not feel responsible in some way?
and with ema, it's rather obvious, isn't it? if she hadn't gone poking her nose into things, none of this would have happened or come to light. and, of course, she'd never choose anyone over her sister, not for anything in the world — it's simply not a question, but that's the problem, isn't it? it's not a question. it's not some hypothetical moral dilemma. it just is. she may not have killed neil marshall, but she still has one king of prosecutor's blood on her hands. and now she has to live with that. she just. has. to live with it. no matter if he chose otherwise.
moving on from that a little, i think it's actually wild how much of ema's journey to becoming a forensics investigator is paved with bad memories. neil marshall's death and her subsequent inability to testify are what drives her to begin pursuing it, her first proper investigation results in her idol's "death" and when she finally graduates, the person who saved her sister has been disbarred, and she can't even help because she isn't allowed to. all that pain and constant pursuit of her goals, and she's still the same ema skye, still that girl shrouded in darkness, always one step behind the truth, one step a little too late. no wonder she was angry in aa:aj. i would be furious.
#and then like a year later they find out edgeworth's fine and if that happened to me i think i would kill him fr#WKSHDKAHDKS#lana skye#ema skye#miles edgeworth#the skye sisters' relationship with one dramatic depressed prosecutor is something that can be so personal...#ive literally never thought this much about lana or ema ever. they never occupy my thoughts but somehow.#everyone else: man edgeworth's vanishing must have had a real impact on franziska and phoenix. me: what about these 2 side characters who#technically only appeared once in the whole trilogy. in a dlc. what about them.#it's actually so interesting how much lana is set up to be important to edgeworth. phoenix even says she reminds him of mia and when i#first read that i was like ??? bc of the scarf? there's more to mia than a scard phoenix. but then you pay attention to how she interacts#with edgeworth and it's like oh. i see it now. and then she disappears forever.#mind you i dont think she or ema were like. destroyed by the news of edgeworth's supposed passing. not in the way phoenix was anyway.#for better or worse both lana and ema are shown to have a tight hold over themselves emotionally speaking. lana keeps a lid on them for#years and ema is told she might have killed neil by accident and is functional after a brief faint and recess. like those women are strong.#but i do think it would have had a deep impact regardless of how well they were able to cope. like i've said i dont see how it wouldnt.#anyway this concludes my rfta moment. time to go back to being unable to say a thing about susato-san even though she occupies my every#waking moment. if you read all this ily <3#it's also past midnight so if this is all a bit everywhere im sorry

Grian stares at the same wall that he has been staring at for so long that he’s lost track of the seconds he’d been counting in his head. He’s not sure the seconds are exactly accurate, either, but they’re probably more accurate than the shiny gold clock Grumbot Prime had given him when he’s expressed his frustration that time kept on slipping through his fingers. After all, he thinks part of the point is that he doesn’t know how long it’s been. He hasn’t gotten hungry in just as long, or thirsty, and he’s been tired, but it’s the bored sort of tired, not the tired of lowered saturation or hearts.
The first thing he’d checked for was things to kill himself on. There hadn’t been any. No respawns for Grian. No damage, either. Just...
If he stares at the wall long enough, he can almost see through the saccharine blue walls. They’re mocking. He knows the walls he’d built the original Grumbot weren’t the most realistic things, but they’d only had but so many colors, and they’d had the ability to modify Grumbot’s programming anyway, and he’d seemed to think it was real enough. Besides, he’d been setting himself on fire. Melting his own circuits. He’d been eating himself from the inside out. Forgive Grian for wanting to come up with the only life support he could think of without overwriting his son’s personality.
...his son clearly hasn’t.
Or, well, Grumbot Prime is not his son.
Hard not to think of him that way, though. As a not-son. They don’t talk the same, but it’s painfully close. Close enough that Grian keeps on calling him Grumbot without the Prime in his head. Probably not good for him to keep doing that, though, considering.
Grian keeps on staring at the wall.
“Why am I here?” he asks again.
It takes a moment to get the piece of paper.
IT IS NOT SAFE
“Bullshit!” Grian says, startling himself at his vehemence. “I’m perfectly capable of taking care of myself! I’m not going to fry my brain because I can’t do a resistance or whatever. Ren can be king if he wants. I’m over it.”
The wall remains tauntingly blue. Grian resists the urge to claw at it again. He hasn’t been able to break it. He suspects there’s obsidian or, worse, bedrock somewhere behind it. That, or it’s not real. That’s a possibility too. Grian hasn’t been getting hungry, after all, and while beacons may be able to do that on their own, there’s another answer to that one as well.
He hopes he’s awake. This would be a miserable nightmare if he were in the matrix again or something.
“You just have that, that - I said I was sorry!” Grian says. “I’m not - I’m not your father. I mean, no, that’s not what I mean. It sort of is? I mean -”
A piece of paper falls in front of him. Grian scrambles to pick it up. He sort of hates himself for how desperate he feels grabbing it.
I DO NOT GET ALONG WITH FATHER 1. I DO NOT ALWAYS GET ALONG WITH YOU. I DO NOT WANT YOU TO DIE
“Then let me out!” Grian says, desperately. “I don’t know what I did! I don’t even remember being put here! I just - tell me why I’m here.”
IT IS NOT SAFE
Grian balls up the paper and throws it at the wall. It bounces pleasantly off onto the soft, comfortable, fake fake fake grass.
“Tell me the actual reason! If you resent me, fine! It’s just - I asked for something to do and you give me sketchbooks, I ask for the time and you give me a clock, and you’re just - I want to go home, Grumbot. I wanna talk to my friends. I’m sorry, I don’t know what I did, I’m sorry.”
I WILL EXPLAIN WHEN I LET YOU OUT. I CANNOT. IT IS NOT SAFE, FATHER
“How long have I even been here?”
YOU HAVE A CLOCK
“Let me out.”
IT IS NOT SAFE
“Grumbot, I am ordering you to let me out!”
YOU ARE NOT MY FATHER
“You just said I - I mean, I’m not - I mean - agh,” Grian says, and he turns to his sketchbooks. He has a simple checklist in the front of one of them with a list of escape ideas. He’s a little short on them. He’s tried all the obvious things. His current plan involves hoping people realize he’s missing, which also makes him wish he were less of an introvert, and that ‘hermit disappears for a week to work on another project’ were not common.
Has it been a week yet?
He doesn’t know. He lost track of counting. He starts picking at his wings and then wavers on his feet and his vision briefly goes hazy and the world smells like potions and drugs and then he isn’t pulling at his hair again. Right. Of course. Silly him. He’s not allowed to hurt himself. Nervous habits aren’t allowed.
I DO NOT HATE YOU. I DO NOT WANT YOU TO BE HURT. WHEN IT IS SAFE YOU CAN LEAVE
Grian scoffs.
“If I knew why I was here in the first place, I might believe you,” he says.
I AM SORRY
Grian scoffs louder. “Oh, sure, I say that all the time too. It doesn’t mean I am.”
THAT WAS TRUE OF MY GRIAN AS WELL
Grian balls up this piece of paper too. It joins the growing pile of pieces of paper he’d like to burn.
He goes back to staring at the wall. Maybe if he stares at it long enough, he’ll be able to see his cave and his Rift and everything else on the other side. He’ll be able to see the friends who probably aren’t even looking for him yet, or, heck, even just Grumbot. Yeah, he’d settle for being able to see more than ominous sheets of paper in an ominously cheery landscape that Grian knows has to be a punishment for something, even if he can’t remember what it is. If he could just remember how Grumbot put him here. If he could just remember when Grumbot put him here. If he could just remember the chain of events that lead Grumbot - Grumbot Prime he has to remember this isn’t actually his son Grumbot Prime - the chain of events that lead to Grumbot Prime being his prison warden, he could figure out a way out.
He starts picking at his wings again. He’s drugged and disoriented and shakes himself out of it again before he can do more than pull slightly.
I WILL GIVE YOU MORE ENRICHMENT
To go with the sketchbooks and markers, down from the ceiling drop several (soft) logic puzzles and several of Grian’s old teething toys, for when his teeth are getting too sharp or he just wants to bite things (he does tend to chew on things when he’s anxious). Those are hard. Those are... hard plastic. Too large to choke himself on or something, but too soft to do anything resembling enough damage to force a respawn.
Grian is going to scream.
“Thanks,” he says instead. He intends it to be sarcastic. It isn’t. He shoves one of the chews in his mouth and tries to pretend that he’s an adult, he’s fine, and he hadn’t felt a shock of happiness at seeing even that much.
How long has he been here? He lost count. He doesn’t know. He thinks the clock is wrong.
"That being said, listen, solitary confinement is a type of torture. You know that, right? It’s -”
There’s a loud noise outside. It is the first sound from outside Grian has heard. Part of him is ecstatic. The rest of him, though - he doesn’t know how to describe that sound. It is a sound. He hears it with his ears. He knows he does. It’s loud. He knows that too. But he couldn’t tell anyone the pitch, he couldn’t tell anyone the timbre, and he couldn’t tell anyone anything other than the fact it makes his very bones feel like they’re rattling worse than any low bass has and his ears feel like they’re burning worse than any high soprano.
"What?” he says, hoarsely.
YOU ARE SAFE. YOU WILL BE SAFE
“Grumbot, you have to let me out,” Grian says, a bit more desperately. “You have to let me out. What was that? You have to let me out.”
IT IS NOT SAFE
The sound rings outside again. Grian clutches at his ears, but it doesn’t stop the vibration from traveling through his whole body. He hears something that he can recognize after that - it’s the sound of some of Grumbot’s fans getting loud enough to get past the soundproofing on this stupid box he’s been put in.
I WILL STOP TALKING NOW. I NEED TO FOCUS. I AM SORRY
“No, wait -” Grian says, although he doesn’t even know what he wants Grumbot to start saying.
I AM SORRY
“That doesn’t change anything!” Grian says.
I AM SORRY. IT IS NOT SAFE. I KNOW. I LOVE YOU
“Grumbot? Grumbot let me out! Let me out! LET ME OUT! LET ME OUT,” screams Grian, clutching that note, but no matter how long he yells himself hoarse, he gets no response, officially making it work worse than the last three times he’d tried that tactic. He only stops when the sound rings again, stealing all the air from Grian’s throat and drowning out his attempts to shout with its loudness. He covers his ears and starts to pick at his wings again. He goes dizzy again. He sits up and the fans are whirring and the sound is getting worse, but he still isn’t allowed to hurt himself, so that’s apparently completely automated to the box instead of a thing Grumbot has to do himself, that’s fun.
He can hardly move. It’s so loud. He doesn’t understand what’s happening outside of the box. He doesn’t understand why this is happening to him. He doesn’t understand what is happening anywhere, actually. He -
Abruptly, the fans cut off. The sound starts getting further away. The sound gets quiet.
It echoes, the silence.
“Grumbot?” Grian asks, because he’s pathetic and he needs someone to talk to.
No response.
“Hey Grumbot, what was that?” he asks.
No response.
“This isn’t particularly funny. Whatever is happening is gone now. You can stop focusing.”
No response.
Grian shakily turns to stare at the wall again. Grumbot normally starts responding if Grian starts doing something particularly stupid. If he stares at the wall long enough, he can probably force Grumbot to stop whatever this new punishment is. Maybe he can even finally figure out what he’s done wrong.
He doesn’t know how long he stares at the wall before he starts talking again.
“I don’t know what I did but I’m sorry. I won’t do it again. I don’t care that it’s not safe, I can’t stay here. Grumbot, let me out. Let me out. I can help. Please. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. Let me out. Let me out.”
He feels his breathing start to get heavy. All at once, he starts punching at the wall, clawing at it, trying to tear it away. It’s soft and has a strange consistency and it won’t move.
“Grumbot, Grumbot stop not talking, I - look I’ll stay here, fine, just talk to me, Grumbot, please, I’m sorry, I won’t do - whatever this is - I’m sorry, I love you, I’m sorry,” Grian says. “Please, please, please, let me out, please, I have to get out, I have to get out.” His breathing gets erratic. His vision starts to get hazy. One of his hands picks at the other while he desperately claws at the wall and he’s breathing heavily and -
He goes dizzy and strangely calm and he wakes up sitting on the ground.
“Grumbot?”
He still gets no response.
This is about when Grian starts to cry for the second time. This doesn’t help either, and it doesn’t make him feel better, and he doesn’t get a note. Outside, it is still strangely silent once more. He slowly tries to un-crumble that last note Grumbot gave him to make sense of it. He still doesn’t know what he’s trying to make sense of.
He still doesn’t know why he’s here.
The walls are saccharine blue.

Me if I talked about Dean like some people talk about Sam:
Sam forcing Dean to stop being a demon was a violation of Dean's bodily autonomy.
Sam locking Dean up numerous times in season 8, 9, and 10 was a violation of Dean's bodily autonomy.
Sam tricking Dean into seeing a faith healer then dragging him into the tent when he was too weak to fight back was a violation of Dean's bodily autonomy.
Dean can't say no to Sam, so any time Sam says anything and Dean agrees, Sam has violated Dean's bodily autonomy.
Removing the Mark of Cain without Dean's permission violated Dean's bodily autonomy.
Punching Dean for wanting to jump into the ocean in a box violated Dean's bodily autonomy.
Always saying no when Dean wanted to take a break leading up to season 3 violated Dean's bodily autonomy.
Throwing Dean against a wall and trying to choke Dean to death violated Dean's bodily autonomy.
Ordering Dean to go and stay with Lisa as his dying wish violated Dean's bodily autonomy.
Trying to kill Benny and telling Dean he couldn't be friends with Benny anymore violated Dean's bodily autonomy.
Sam killed two different people over the course of the show to save Dean, violating Dean's principles, and his agency and bodily autonomy.
Guilting Dean into keeping Michael locked up in his head violated Dean's bodily autonomy.
Trying to force Dean to be his mommy violated Dean's bodily autonomy.
Guilting and shaming Dean into a parenting role with Jack violated Dean's bodily autonomy.
Being referred to as a dog who needed to be leashed by demons who wanted Sam to take control of Dean is a reflection of Dean's lack of bodily autonomy.
Sam lying to Dean about things that concern Dean's life is a violation of Dean's bodily autonomy.
Sam not letting Dean die whenever Dean is suicidal is a violation of Dean's bodily autonomy
Sam lying by promising to survive The Trials just so he can do them instead is a violation of Dean's bodily autonomy.
Sam letting Dean get turned into a vampire so he can use him to get into a nest is a violation of Dean's bodily autonomy.
Sam being perfectly comfortable with using Dean as bait is a violation of Dean's bodily autonomy.
Sam showing clear disapproval of various sexual partners Dean has is a violation of Dean's bodily autonomy.
Sam trying to kill Crowley is a violation of Dean's bodily autonomy.
Sam not looking for Dean when he was in Purgatory was a violation of Dean's bodily autonomy, but also if Sam had looked for him, that would also be a violation of Dean's bodily autonomy because he doesn't know what Dean would want.

Sometimes I find myself thinking about Din Djarin a little too much that I get concerned and think that I really should go to therapy...
Well, I'm finally doing that (again) tomorrow... :)
Feeling pretty nervous about it but hoping that because I now know I'm autistic it will help me understand/explain things a little better! Hopefully this is the start of a journey to finally become a healthier, happier version of myself :)
