Zender, Schuberts Winterreise, Julian Prégardien, 2018

This is the Zender orchestral version of Schubert's Winterreise. There are relatively few recordings of it, one of them made in 1999 by this tenor's actual father, Christoph Prégardien. Maybe someone has written a comparison of the two versions; I won't.

This album first caught my eye because of the cover. I like the unsubtle Courbet reference here, especially since the subject has soulless ice-blue eyes instead of the original's warm brown ones. Winter theme established.

I'm very pleased by these sounds. By that I mean the recording itself. There are a lot of loud parts and quiet parts, clicks and timpani and angry violins. And yet, it's never irritating. Everything is harmonious and nothing sets off my ear nerve issues.

Oh, the content of the recording is nice as well. The singing is elegant, the orchestra is dynamic, the Zender arrangement itself is always cool to hear. The spoken / whispered / yelled parts of the singer's text aren't very convincing, to me, but that's a small complaint. Lovely album, highly recommended.

How I found it: might be literally the only Zender Winterreise recorded this century, other than the 2020 video from the Zürich ballet, which is extremely good.
