A bit late but on account of World Ocean Day which was yesterday here's my new painting of one of fastest Crabs on Earth. These quick crustaceans are called Ghost Crabs. And the name is apt because if you are walking along a beach on under a beautiful moonlight sky you will hear them crawling by but won't be able to catch a glimpse of them as they will be already in their burrows. Now wouldn't that give you the creeps. Their genus name Ocypode itself means Fast Footed. They are easily identifiable because of their iconic box shaped body and large eyes sitting on elongated stalls. They can be found on intertidal zones of tropical and subtropical areas. Which includes Chawpatty and many more beaches of Mumbai. They disembowel camels, jump in the air, run after humans and eat sleeping men… such are the myths that are attached with this hairy, ferrous looking creature. The myth are because of its behavior to seek shelter from sun which on barren desert would be the shade cast by camel or man. even its name of its order Solifugae in Latin means “those who flee from the sun,”. On a closer look these arachnids appear to have 10 legs, they actually have eight. The two extra leg-like appendages are sensory organs called pedipalps. These guyz have many names camel spiders,wind scorpions, sun spiders, or solifuges but are not Spiders nor Scorpians. Scientific name: Halcyon pileata Common name: Black capped Kingfisher Family:Alcedinidae It is a tree kingfisher which is widely distributed in tropical Asia from India east to China,Korea and Southeast Asia. Mainly lives in Coastal habitats and along long rivers. It is distinctive in having a black cap that contrasts with the whitish throat, purple blue wings and the coral red bill. Like many other kingfishers, this species was much sought for the blue feathers for their use in the millinery trade. Feathers were used in making fans in China. In Hong Kong, their feathers were cut and glued over ornaments used by women. This summer vacation tried painting wildlife rather than photographing it. One of the most proud moments of my life!! This year me and my colleagues with the Support of WWF embarked upon a journey to provide interactive environmental education via Games, Quiz, Survey, and projects. It was a brilliant experience that gave me an insight into the lives of these less fortunate but very very talented kids!! I realized that there financial constraint and family problems though a bane were also a boon as it forced the students to find creative and innovative ways to overcome their limitations. If nurtured these kids have much more to offer for the bright future of India than those studying in schools and classes, spending unnecessary amount of money. Scientific name: Falco tinnunculus Common name: Common Kestrel Family: Falconidae These common kestrel species are distributed in Indian Subcontinent, Europe, Asia and Africa. They are widespread winter visitors in India. The head and tail are grey in male kestrel. The rest of the plumage is mainly light chestnut brown with blackish spots on the upperside and brown with narrow blackish streaks on the underside. Characteristically hovers in open country with rapidly beating wings and fanned tail, while scanning the ground for prey. It inhabits fields, heaths, shrubland, wetlands, moorlands, arid savanna and marshland. The kestrel call is a fast, shrill kik-kik-kik-kik sound. Botanical name: Utricularia purpurascens Common name: Purple Bladderwort plant Vernacular names: Marathi: Seetechee aasawe Family: Utriculariaceae ( Utricularia, commonly and collectively called the bladderworts, is a genus of carnivorous plants consisting of approximately 233 species. All Utricularia are carnivorous and capture small organisms by means of bladder-like traps hence the name. They flower in the months of August to October. These are found on open rocky areas, moist soil on plateaus, along streams, ephemeral ponds, wet laterite rocks, soil covered black boulders and grassy slopes; associated with grasses, species of Eriocaulon, Rhamphicarpa, and Striga gesnerioides. This species is Endemic to Northern parts of W. Ghats; distributed from Maharashtra to Gujarat in north, and to Karnataka and Goa in south.
