Finally! Somebody else that supports this theory!

Ooh those are really interesting points as well. I didn't know about that! The name Finnian/Fenian being associated with the colour white could also indicate how Our Ciel was once a pure and innocent little thing, and now that he's no longer any of those things he doesn't consider himself as Finnian anymore, and hence the reason why he's never spoke about his real name (Perhaps? Maybe I'm a little far-fetched but I really adore this theory asgshlal). And yes! The chess part would greatly parellel with what Kuroshitsuji encompasses as a whole since chess is a major motif of the manga.

I didn't know about the "Cedric" name being Celtic but your explanation makes alot of sense, come to think of it. That would support the reason behind the name Finnian. Thank you for the extra input! It only helps strengthen my already strong conviction of this theory aaahhh~

A Theory on Ciel’s Real Name

A question we’ve all been pondering ever since Yana revealed Ciel wasn’t actually Ciel.

I’ve had this theory in mind for a while but after a few of the recent chapters I decided this theory might be very possible.

What if Ciel’s real name is Finnian?

First off on the cover page of Chapter 132 we can see Vincent reading this book called ‘Fenian Cycle’ to the twins.

The Fenian cycle is a collection of short stories centering around this character called Fionn mac Cumhaill (his name is translated to Fionn in modern Irish but was also known as Find and Finn in old Irish) and his warriors the Fianna. Basically, Fionn is the son of the the late Cumhaill (the former leader of the Fianna) and was always on the run and in hiding as a child from the men who slain his father. The current leader of the Fianna did not want Fionn to take his rightful ownership as the leader of the Fianna. This can parellel with how Vincent was slaughtered and how Our Ciel was always seen as the weaker and timid child compared to Real Ciel who was depicted as the braver and stronger of the two. Not to mention Real Ciel is the rightful heir to the Watchdog title and the Earl of Phantomhive, not Our Ciel. It is also worth noting that in the recent chapters where Real Ciel has mysteriously and grandiosely reappeared he seems to have this underlying vendetta to get his title back. To make things simpler, it’s as if Real Ciel is trying to ‘steal’ Our Ciel’s 'title’ as the Queen’s Watchdog and although he is the rightful heir, Yana has made us all read through and experience Our Ciel carrying out the Watchdog duty so in a way, we are able to empathise with him as being the 'rightful’ person to do this job and that this duty 'rightfully’ belongs to him.

What follows from the story is that Fionn showcases how great and omnipotent he really is and eventually regains his leadership of the Fianna and spends the rest of the story roaming Ireland, carrying out the duties of the Fianna. This parallels greatly with Kuroshitsuji as Our Ciel proves he is capable of the Watchdog title and being an earl. He is calculating, dexterous, and vigilant. And we as readers watch as he masterfully carries out the Watchdog duties throughout each arc.

What I’d like to point out next is this:

Notice that look of surprise on Our Ciel’s face in the left hand corner panel when he sees Finny. I interpreted this as Our Ciel seeing a reflection of himself (or his past self) in Finny somehow. Both of them were kidnapped and locked up and used as 'lab rats’ for heinous, nefarious reasons.

I think Our Ciel also recognised the distant, faraway look in Finny’s eyes as somebody who has gone through an equally heartwrenching, dark experience as he has.

Granted, they both also watched as their loved ones/close friends were brutally murdered right before their very eyes.

This was Finny when he watched a doctor gun down two of his fellow inmates:

And this is Our Ciel watching his twin brother, Real Ciel (whom he seems to have a very close relationship with based on the flashback chapters) getting stabbed right before him:

I found it really interesting how similar Yana drew both of these panels when showing how both these characters witness the murdering of their loved ones/close friends (especially the eye panels where she highlighted the pure shock in them).

There are other interesting parallels that could possibly hint that Our Ciel’s name is actually Finnian. Both Finny and Our Ciel were branded (one with a slave mark and the other with a tattoo) to indicate whom they belonged to.

And in this sense, it shows how both were being treated as mere objects instead of actual human beings.

Moreover, one compelling fact is that both Our Ciel and Finny were the only ones to survive their horrendous ordeal (I’m not taking Real Ciel into account because as of now we are unsure as to whether he actually survived or was revived or is some form of developed Bizarre Doll, although I would place my bet on the latter as there is no possible indication whatsoever that he could’ve survived). In addition to this, in order to escape from their cruel captors they both sought to killing them.

This was the doctor that shot Finny’s fellow inmates:

So I assume this was one of the reasons why Our Ciel spared Finny’s life on that day and hired him as a Phantomhive servant. Finny reminded Our Ciel of himself (or again, his past self) in terms of how they were both victims of human greed and savagery.

I found other interesting links that could possibly hint at Our Ciel’s name being Finnian. One of them is how both Our Ciel and Finny are caring, selfless individuals who tend to think about the people around them first rather than themselves (in Our Ciel’s case, I suppose this trait was more dominant before the kidnapping and the whole cult event that ensued).

Also, Our Ciel was depicted as a naïve, wide-eyed innocent child which is basically Finny in a nutshell.

And here’s a bonus picture of a̶ ̶c̶u̶t̶i̶e̶ Our Ciel getting really mad because Real Ciel told him that it was silly to believe in something he hadn’t seen before (and if you do believe in Santa then by all means you do you).

What really striked me is how similar Finny is compared to the younger version of Our Ciel. I’ve already cited the evidence as shown above but this revelation only further strengthens my belief that Ciel’s possible name could be Finnian.

I think it’s also worth mentioning that out of all the servants Finny seems to be the closest to Our Ciel and remember, Finny was the only one who saw through Real Ciel when he first entered the manor.

I also find it interesting how Finny was the only one that Our Ciel allowed to be near him and to tend to him during the Emerald Witch Arc.

During this time Our Ciel had broken down completely and reverted into the part of himself whom he vowed he’d never be anymore. So why was Finny the only person who was allowed to be near Our Ciel during his extreme mental breakdown? Even Sebastian whom Our Ciel seems to 'trust’ the most was rejected and thrown aside. Well, I’d like to think that was because Our Ciel could relate to Finny in some way. Since I’ve mentioned how similar younger version of Our Ciel and Finny actually are, considering how Our Ciel has relapsed into his 'old’ self, 'the one who died on the altar’, I’d assume he found comfort in Finny because Finny represented him. He allowed Finny to stay because Finny could understand and empathise with him. Kind, innocent, selfless, and caring. These were all prevalent traits Our Ciel possessed before he was tortured by the cult. And these are all the traits that Finny possesses after he was rescued from the lab (granted, I’m sure Finny had kindness and a sense of closeness with his fellow inmates but these characteristics did not have the opportunity to grow or nurture until he was rescued by Our Ciel). What’s also interesting is how Yana illustrates Our Ciel and Finny’s relationship being far more prominent than with the other Phantomhive servants.

With the way this is worded, I can only assume it was Our Ciel who actually invited Finny and not vice versa so this shows that he feels comfortable in Finny’s presence. Again we are presented with parallels between these two characters and I’d like to think that it’s not all just a coincidence.

Bonus indications that Our Ciel is actually a Finnian/Finny:

1) I’m probably being a little too far-fetched here but both Our Ciel and Finny had injections during their time in captivity.

I know it’s kind of a “So what?” point but knowing how Yana loves to add in obviously ridiculous and ridiculously obvious hints I thought this was worth taking note.

2) Take a look at this panel.

Judging by how Our Ciel says “Um…” before stating his name I assume he hasn’t prepared himself for a situation like the one unfolding before him to occur. Also, he was unprepared for the first test that he had to pass through in order to become recruited as one of the circus members. He had no idea as to how or when Sebastian would help him until his darts were surprisingly hitting the target after every single throw. This means that Ciel was utterly and completely unaware of how things would play out when he arrived. So, back to my original statement, the fact that he paused and THEN claimed his name was Finnian could be an instinctive and reflex statement as again, he was caught off guard and responded with the first thing that came to his mind. Why Finnian? Perhaps because that was his name?

Then we have Joker responding with, “That’s a grand name,” and we know for a fact that Vincent mentioned this:

The fact that Joker says 'grand’, not 'beautiful’ or 'nice’, could indicate that even he himself has not heard of the name often (if ever) and is amazed by how a mere 'pageboy’ could possess such a name. Moreover, the word 'grand’ itself has royal connotations to it, giving one the impression of something majestic and glorious just like how the Phantomhives are perceived as.

So there you have it! Of course, this is all mere speculation and nothing is confirmed, some of the points made could also be bias on my part so you may take this with a grain of salt. As always, you are free to tell me your own opinions on this if you want! Thanks for reading~

The 11 Times Lizzy Has Felt For The Phantomhive Twins

In regards to the new chapter, I decided to make a little compilation of the brilliant portrayal of our favourite swordsgirl being selfless and supporting both the twins. I made this in chronological order of her ageing up over the years so without further ado, let us begin~

● She didn’t want to practice fencing anymore because Ciel was afraid of “strong” girls

Even at such a young age, Lizzy seems to take Ciel’s words very much to heart and believes that he won’t want to marry her anymore if she ever displayed her swordfighting skills to him. But notice how at the very end, she reluctantly complies to continue because it’s “for his sake.” She’s doing this for Ciel. She will protect him in the future because being the Queen’s Watchdog comes with many risks and dangers, and she needs to learn to fend for herself and for Ciel.

● She cries at the sight of seeing “Ciel” again after he was presumably thought to be dead

What else is there to say? Lizzy loves Ciel, and seeing him turn up literally out of nowhere is sure to reduce her to tears. She even states that she “can’t believe it” indicating that she had accepted his death and now that he’s back she is certain to hold him dear.

● She knows how much Madam Red means to Ciel

This panel was taken during the Jack the Ripper arc where Ciel strides into the church and leans over Madam Red. We know that Lizzy and Ciel used to play together with Madam Red alot and she, in turn, loved them earnestly so this panel really highlights not just the close bond between aunt and nephew, but also the close bond between Ciel and Lizzy.

● She feels genuinely happy knowing that Our Ciel is back to his old self

This.

This here accentuates Lizzy’s complete selflessness towards her own happiness and instead focuses on retaining and acquiring that very same happiness for her fiancè. Notice how she does not speak of this in front of Our Ciel which points towards the focal point of her character: her good nature. She’s not trying to induce guilt or self-pity from others, rather - and yet again - she’s only doing this FOR Our Ciel.

● Eventhough she doesn’t show it, she is very sensitive to Our Ciel’s emotions

This was taken right after the Circus Arc and Our Ciel was not in the best of places after all that ensued. Eventhough he did try to appear like his normal self, Lizzy naturally noticed something was off about him. This was the chapter where Nina was making Easter costumes for them and we all know Lizzy is a huge admirer of clothing and fashion in general. And yet, she suppresses this excitement of obtaining new clothes and instead is concerned for the well-being of Our Ciel.

● She wants to get to know the “current” him better

Lizzy knows that the “Ciel” now is not the same Ciel as before. But instead of pushing him away, she welcomes him with open arms. She tries her best to make Our Ciel confide in her because she is genuinely concerned about him and wants to help him.

● She wants him to be happy

This was Lizzy’s reaction when Sebastian stated that he believes Our Ciel was worn out because he had spent a pleasant day with all his close and loved ones around. She’s relieved to know that he’s getting a good rest and that it was partially because of her. This has been Lizzy’s goal all along: to make Our Ciel happy again.

● She knows the time has come for her to make a huge sacrifice

Lizzy always knew that at some point in time, she would eventually have to reveal the whole of herself to Our Ciel however, I imagine she never thought it would be this soon or in such a situation as they were in. Notice how she’s crying and smiling at the same time. She knows it’s her duty to protect Our Ciel now and she would strip off her cute image if it meant for his sake. So, I suppose in a twisted sort of way she tried to find some positivity in this, such as she would be making a sacrifice but one that she’d make gladly. Because, again, it’s for Our Ciel.

● She cheers him on

This panel was drawn after Blue House was declared the winner of the Cricket Tournament. There’s not much that needs to be said here. Eventhough she has a brother in another house and eventhough they lost, she is still in high spirits and again, is genuinely happy and actively cheers for Our Ciel throughout the entire competition.

● She worries about him

I interpreted this little panel above as Lizzy being thoroughly shocked because Bravat has managed to relate what and how she actually feels. This suggests that her concern over Our Ciel must be a prominent and focal point of her priorities.

● She doesn’t want to hurt him

I think the fact that she says she “doesn’t know what the right thing do is either” goes to show her internal struggle for siding with Real Ciel or Our Ciel. She realises that all this time she’s spent trying to cheer her fiancè up might be all in vain because that person wasn’t even her fiancè to begin with. But even so, the agony and despair of the betrayal coincides with her potentially grown love for Our Ciel. That is why it is so hard for her to choose “the right thing to do.”

And there you have it! This was what I have managed to collect. If there were any other highlights of Lizzy’s character portrayal that you’ve found you can reblog this as I might have missed some.

Parallels between Doll and Our!Ciel

So this just came to my mind how similar and antagonistic Doll and Our!Ciel can be. I’m going to try and break it down into the different similarities and contrasts I’ve spotted and then tying it all in into how this forms and molds their relationship.

First off, one discernible fact that somehow was imperceptible to me at the start is that they both covered their eye.

We soon find out the reason behind Doll’s concealment of her left eye which was left marred and disfigured due to her parents’ neglect and abuse.

And in Our!Ciel’s case, well, there isn’t really much to elaborate here as we all know he needs to hide the contract seal.

But this brings me to my next point. The concealment of their eye could be considered a metaphor and also a symbolism for a masquerade of something bigger. Like what, you might ask? Well, for one, it could be a camouflage of their true identities.

In Doll’s case, she put on a costume (literally and metaphorically) that allowed her to switch between being a first-tier circus member and a second-tier member. She disguised herself by using the alias Freckles (I will go into more detail regarding this later) and would wear baggy clothing and ankle boots which in this sense can be considered her ‘costume’. And when she’s playing her role as “Doll” she will don her white wig and ballet shoes. Honestly it can be argued either way which one would be her 'costume’ because both “Freckles” and “Doll” managed to fool Our!Ciel.

But what’s also interesting is how Doll allows Our!Ciel to think of her as, as he put it, a 'bloke’, and never once has she tried to put herself under the impression that she was a girl and not a boy. This may be because she doesn’t want Our!Ciel to feel uncomfortable or otherwise awkward since they share and sleep in the same room after all. All the same, she keeps her real identity to herself until she eventually reveals it when she rescued Our!Ciel from Snake’s snakes.

Bur Our!Ciel’s case goes much deeper. At first he reveals himself to be a pageboy named Finnian.

And then dug a deeper hole for himself when he admitted to living in the East End and having to steal in order to survive.

But his fabrication of lies soon unveils by the end of the arc when Doll eventually finds out that he is their target all along - Ciel Phantomhive, the Queen’s Watchdog.

What’s ironic about this is that Our!Ciel isn’t just the circus troupe’s target but that the circus troupe is also Our!Ciel’s target.

And another interesting parellel to draw is the fact that Doll could’ve lived if she hadn’t arrived at the manor just as Our!Ciel and Sebastian were leaving. I’m quite sure Our!Ciel would have been too caught up in his thoughts and trauma to even think about Doll let alone kill her. And if the situation was reversed and Doll learns that Our!Ciel is the one that Baron Kelvin wants I am quite sure she would be against it and may even help Our!Ciel escape due to her good nature and naïvety (she took his word for not stealing anything and even forgave him and promised not to tell anyone). In other words, they were not each other’s direct preys and could have been spared the pain and mental agony in that moment (or in Doll’s case, death) but due to the circumstances that ensued they both sought to killing each other, and just like every other killing match there can only be one winner.

Another ironic fact about this is Our!Ciel vows to get revenge on those who murdered his family and yet here he is: killing off Doll’s own family and taking away the one thing she’s ever known, cared, loved, and cherished her entire life (much like himself). Doll’s reaction was much like his own; she couldn’t forgive him and was blinded with rage and the only way she could see herself being relieved of the pain and confusion she felt in that moment was to eradicate him (again tying in with how Our!Ciel’s duty was to eradicate the circus troupe for their horrible misconduct of kidnapping children and can also parellel with him wanting to get revenge {which hints at a possible elimination because it’s Our!Ciel we’re talking about} on the people who were behind his family’s tragedy).

Let me bring you back to the point I made about Doll disguising as Freckles which I said I would elaborate on. Another similarity I’ve noted between them is the use of a different name to indicate different sides of them. In Doll’s case, when she was “Doll” she was considered to be a graceful, skilled tightrope walker who’s manner and countenance appeared to be reticent and rather quiet.

However, when under her alias, Freckles, her personality seems to take a 180° turn. As Freckles, she is friendly, warm and somewhat rowdy.

She may or may not have intentionally planned to deceive Our!Ciel into thinking she was one of the guys as she is generally more tomboy-ish in nature and probably didn’t think Our!Ciel would care either way as all the new members of the circus were working and practising really hard to become first-tier members as Doll had mentioned, so figuring out whether a person was actually a guy or a girl would probably be the last thing on their minds. Also, the fact that the circus isn’t exactly the poshest place to be could suggest that its inhabitants were of the lower class and wouldn’t be too bothered to be within close proximity of a different gender as they may have been living in a crowded area or in small spaces prior to coming to the circus.

As for Our!Ciel, he had introduced himself as Finnian (I wrote a theory on how Our!Ciel’s hypothetical name could be Finnian/Finny. If you’re interested or would like to read it, you can click here) and was later given the stage name Smile (Ha. Ha.). Of course, again, this is super ironic considering how Our!Ciel is anything but smiles. But if we think about this symbolically, the contrast in his name could portray the contrast in the real reason why he was employed into the circus in the first place. He was not there to be hired, he was there to investigate the members and the circus under the Queen’s order. Just like how artificial his stage name is, he fakes a smile and makes up a story of how he used to be a thief. A smile is also generally seen as a positive and nice thing. It’s the expression one gives when one is happy or comforting a friend or remembering a miraculous, beautiful moment in one’s life. It’s meant to be something genuine but, of course, this isn’t always the case. Smiles can be feigned. It can be worn to manipulate someone or when one wishes to get back at somebody else and succeeds at doing so or to conceal pain. It’s these dark aspects of a smile that this arc focuses on and is essentially the very core of what Kuroshitsuji is about: darkness.

But wait, there’s more.

Smile isn’t the only name Our!Ciel has paraded in.

Of course, back then, it would seem highly improbable for us to guess that there was more to this then what already met the eye. But with all the recent chapters we’ve learned that Our!Ciel wasn’t just putting on a façade as Smile, he was also putting on a façade as Ciel. He wanted to be seen as the Ciel Phantomhive who was strong and omnipotent and ruthless as the Watchdog and earl. His charade went deeper than just an-earl-in-hiding; simultaneously he was also proving to himself that he was the earl.

Something else that caught my attention was Doll’s costume.

The white roses adorning her costume could mean two things symbolically.

● It symbolises the start of new beginnings

I will elaborate on both sides. In Doll’s perspective, the circus was a sign of a new beginning. A fresh start from the horrors of living on the East End and having to fight to survive and barely getting through all the abuse, discrimination, and neglect. The circus would allow them to finally be looked upon with love and admiration. Of course, this doesn’t come freely. Doll and the rest of the circus members had to work really hard in order to be as talented as they were. Now if we look at Our!Ciel’s perspective he had just barely survived a horrible ordeal of summoning a devil and him being the potential sacrificial lamb. He lost his twin brother. But he formed a contract with the aforementioned devil. A contract that would not only erase him of his past self which he deemed as being unworthy and weak, but one that would allow him to reach the impossible: to be the Earl of Phantomhive and the Queen’s Watchdog, and by doing so, would also allow him to come clean (or at least feel some form of fraudulent, brief relief) by seeking vengeance on those who did this to him.

● It symbolises a token of remembrance

White roses are often gifted as an act of reverence. In Doll’s case, I suppose this would be more sentimental as the roses could pay tribute to her as a character, as a person. She had assisted in a terrible crime - child kidnapping, and yet she herself is a child at heart. Buoyant, light-hearted, and terribly naïve. It was due to this childlike innocence of hers that lead her to her impending death. And yet we don’t see Doll (or other of the circus troupe members as a matter of fact) as gruesome villains despite the severity of their crime-doings. In Our!Ciel’s case, this symbol of reminiscence could hint at the fact that he has buried his past self, or as mentioned in Chapter 140, ‘the one who died on the altar’. Or it could also be interpreted as Our!Ciel taking on Real!Ciel’s identity as a way to commemorate and preserve his twin brother.

Now that we’ve looked at the similarities, I will dive into the opposite parellels of Doll and Our!Ciel.

First things first, I think it’s save to assume that Doll and Our!Ciel basically have opposing personalities. Doll is far more caring, naïve, and high-spirited. For instance:

Even when she disguises herself as “Doll” the tightrope walker she still retains her good nature despite appearing rather stoic and aloof.

Whereas Our!Ciel is far more cautious, calculative, and detached.

In Doll’s case, even though she was a part of an illegal and horrible activity - child kidnapping - she never really preserved any of the abominable traits that one would expect from a child kidnapper such as being remorseless or vindictive. Ironically she’s still a child herself and enjoys having a good laugh every now and then just like any other child.

I’d again like to bring your attention back to Doll’s costume but this time instead of mentioning its pieces I shall talk about its colour.

White.

I think we all know the symbolic meaning behind this colour. White represents purity and linking this back to Doll and her guileless naïvety in the way she treats Our!Ciel, like easily forgiving him for his act of ‘stealing’ and sharing her food with him after she saw he only got some measly bread (if you love bread don’t let me stop you), it emphasises and ties in with the point I made above about Doll still being a child herself.

White is also associated with light and goodness, and this can be further elaborated by Doll and her family, the other circus members, who only did what they did simply because they felt in debt to Baron Kelvin for taking them in and giving them prosthetics so that they could feel ‘normal’ and function better. In addition, they kept up with the kidnapping because they were under the belief that there were other children back at the workhouse they came from who needed support. But, of course, by the end of the arc we find out that Baron Kelvin was lying all along and that the workhouse has long since been abandoned. But it’s this fact that clearly highlights Doll’s sincerity, innocence, and purity. She was willing to trust and put in her all for the ones she loves and feels thankful for despite not really knowing whether the other person was really being genuine (like Baron Kelvin’s story of the children back at the workhouse and Our!Ciel’s forgery of being a pageboy and a thief).

With Our!Ciel this is not the case. He goes into a situation with forethought to its consequences and meticulously scrutinises each detail he is presented with. Unlike Doll who is terribly gullible Our!Ciel finds it hard to trust people and have people around him, or be close to someone. He would not be friendly to someone unless the situation reads otherwise, if its to carry out the Queen’s orders, or if it’s beneficial to him in some way (take for example in Chapter 96 where Our!Ciel thanks Sieglinde for helping him after she refuses to go along with him to see the ‘outside world’ but in reality he is trying to manipulate her into accepting his proposition as the Queen wishes to see her, or in Chapter 30 where he thanks Soma graciously for nursing him back to health after he contracted a fever when really he’s just taking the opportunity to try and escape from the prince’s clutches of making him stay in the townhouse).

Another thing that got my attention was this:

This is the line drawn between Doll and Our!Ciel. This is where their views are no longer the same. Where Doll hesitates Our!Ciel will and does not. Doll retains more compassion in her heart while Our!Ciel is brutally ruthless. Given how they both experienced abuse and neglect at a young age it would not be a surprise if they both ended up with similar personalities and views on life.

But this is not the case.

For Doll, her maltreatment soon ended after Baron Kelvin took her in to his workhouse along with the rest of her family - her loved ones, and from there she was able to shine as Doll the graceful tightrope walker. Just as she is dubbed the ‘princess of the circus’ she seemed to live in her own fairytale world and eventhough her good nature had cost her life in the end, she had died along with the rest of her family and in this sense didn’t actually die in vain as she could possibly reunite with them in the Afterlife which really brings the term ‘happily ever after’ to life. However, this story is reversed for Our!Ciel. His ‘happily ever after’ died on his 10th birthday and from there it was just darkness and isolation. No one was coming to save him. His only loved one left was his twin brother who promised that they would return home together but he had died along with the rest of his family leaving only Our!Ciel. Therefore, it is only natural for Doll to assume a positive disposition as after her horrible mistreatment she was shown love, care, and kindness. But Our!Ciel was in the opposite situation. He had been given these things from the start only for them to be snatched away from him and that is where the tragedy lays.

In light of the recent chapter I decided to pay tribute to and compile iconic smug/very-pleased-with-himself moments from a cinnamon roll Our!Ciel from the first chapter to the most recent. Enjoy~

Thank you! Like I’ve mentioned, this is all mere speculation but I wouldn’t mind Our Ciel’s name actually being Finny/Finnian. It’s on my first bet at the moment. It could be possible that his name is related to the moon too so I suppose all we have to do is sit and wait ‘till Yana eventually tells us herself (and I hope she does!)

A Theory on Ciel’s Real Name

A question we’ve all been pondering ever since Yana revealed Ciel wasn’t actually Ciel.

I’ve had this theory in mind for a while but after a few of the recent chapters I decided this theory might be very possible.

What if Ciel’s real name is Finnian?

First off on the cover page of Chapter 132 we can see Vincent reading this book called ‘Fenian Cycle’ to the twins.

What I’d like to point out next is this:

I think Our Ciel also recognised the distant, faraway look in Finny’s eyes as somebody who has gone through an equally heartwrenching, dark experience as he has.

Granted, they both also watched as their loved ones/close friends were brutally murdered right before their very eyes.

This was Finny when he watched a doctor gun down two of his fellow inmates:

And this is Our Ciel watching his twin brother, Real Ciel (whom he seems to have a very close relationship with based on the flashback chapters) getting stabbed right before him:

And in this sense, it shows how both were being treated as mere objects instead of actual human beings.

This was the doctor that shot Finny’s fellow inmates:

And I think this panel speaks for itself:

Also, Our Ciel was depicted as a naïve, wide-eyed innocent child which is basically Finny in a nutshell.

I also find it interesting how Finny was the only one that Our Ciel allowed to be near him and to tend to him during the Emerald Witch Arc.

Bonus indications that Our Ciel is actually a Finnian/Finny:

1) I’m probably being a little too far-fetched here but both Our Ciel and Finny had injections during their time in captivity.

I know it’s kind of a “So what?” point but knowing how Yana loves to add in obviously ridiculous and ridiculously obvious hints I thought this was worth taking note.

2) Take a look at this panel.

Then we have Joker responding with, “That’s a grand name,” and we know for a fact that Vincent mentioned this:

A Theory on Ciel’s Real Name

A question we've all been pondering ever since Yana revealed Ciel wasn't actually Ciel.

I've had this theory in mind for a while but after a few of the recent chapters I decided this theory might be very possible.

What if Ciel's real name is Finnian?

First off on the cover page of Chapter 132 we can see Vincent reading this book called 'Fenian Cycle' to the twins.

The Fenian cycle is a collection of short stories centering around this character called Fionn mac Cumhaill (his name is translated to Fionn in modern Irish but was also known as Find and Finn in old Irish) and his warriors the Fianna. Basically, Fionn is the son of the the late Cumhaill (the former leader of the Fianna) and was always on the run and in hiding as a child from the men who slain his father. The current leader of the Fianna did not want Fionn to take his rightful ownership as the leader of the Fianna. This can parellel with how Vincent was slaughtered and how Our Ciel was always seen as the weaker and timid child compared to Real Ciel who was depicted as the braver and stronger of the two. Not to mention Real Ciel is the rightful heir to the Watchdog title and the Earl of Phantomhive, not Our Ciel. It is also worth noting that in the recent chapters where Real Ciel has mysteriously and grandiosely reappeared he seems to have this underlying vendetta to get his title back. To make things simpler, it's as if Real Ciel is trying to 'steal' Our Ciel's 'title' as the Queen's Watchdog and although he is the rightful heir, Yana has made us all read through and experience Our Ciel carrying out the Watchdog duty so in a way, we are able to empathise with him as being the 'rightful' person to do this job and that this duty 'rightfully' belongs to him.

What I'd like to point out next is this:

Notice that look of surprise on Our Ciel's face in the left hand corner panel when he sees Finny. I interpreted this as Our Ciel seeing a reflection of himself (or his past self) in Finny somehow. Both of them were kidnapped and locked up and used as 'lab rats' for heinous, nefarious reasons.

I think Our Ciel also recognised the distant, faraway look in Finny's eyes as somebody who has gone through an equally heartwrenching, dark experience as he has.

Moreover, one compelling fact is that both Our Ciel and Finny were the only ones to survive their horrendous ordeal (I'm not taking Real Ciel into account because as of now we are unsure as to whether he actually survived or was revived or is some form of developed Bizarre Doll, although I would place my bet on the latter as there is no possible indication whatsoever that he could've survived). In addition to this, in order to escape from their cruel captors they both sought to killing them.

So I assume this was one of the reasons why Our Ciel spared Finny's life on that day and hired him as a Phantomhive servant. Finny reminded Our Ciel of himself (or again, his past self) in terms of how they were both victims of human greed and savagery.

I found other interesting links that could possibly hint at Our Ciel's name being Finnian. One of them is how both Our Ciel and Finny are caring, selfless individuals who tend to think about the people around them first rather than themselves (in Our Ciel's case, I suppose this trait was more dominant before the kidnapping and the whole cult event that ensued).

Also, Our Ciel was depicted as a naïve, wide-eyed innocent child which is basically Finny in a nutshell.

And here's a bonus picture of a̶ ̶c̶u̶t̶i̶e̶ Our Ciel getting really mad because Real Ciel told him that it was silly to believe in something he hadn't seen before (and if you do believe in Santa then by all means you do you).

What really striked me is how similar Finny is compared to the younger version of Our Ciel. I've already cited the evidence as shown above but this revelation only further strengthens my belief that Ciel's possible name could be Finnian.

I think it's also worth mentioning that out of all the servants Finny seems to be the closest to Our Ciel and remember, Finny was the only one who saw through Real Ciel when he first entered the manor.

I also find it interesting how Finny was the only one that Our Ciel allowed to be near him and to tend to him during the Emerald Witch Arc.

During this time Our Ciel had broken down completely and reverted into the part of himself whom he vowed he'd never be anymore. So why was Finny the only person who was allowed to be near Our Ciel during his extreme mental breakdown? Even Sebastian whom Our Ciel seems to 'trust' the most was rejected and thrown aside. Well, I'd like to think that was because Our Ciel could relate to Finny in some way. Since I've mentioned how similar younger version of Our Ciel and Finny actually are, considering how Our Ciel has relapsed into his 'old' self, 'the one who died on the altar', I'd assume he found comfort in Finny because Finny represented him. He allowed Finny to stay because Finny could understand and empathise with him. Kind, innocent, selfless, and caring. These were all prevalent traits Our Ciel possessed before he was tortured by the cult. And these are all the traits that Finny possesses after he was rescued from the lab (granted, I'm sure Finny had kindness and a sense of closeness with his fellow inmates but these characteristics did not have the opportunity to grow or nurture until he was rescued by Our Ciel). What's also interesting is how Yana illustrates Our Ciel and Finny's relationship being far more prominent than with the other Phantomhive servants.

With the way this is worded, I can only assume it was Our Ciel who actually invited Finny and not vice versa so this shows that he feels comfortable in Finny's presence. Again we are presented with parallels between these two characters and I'd like to think that it's not all just a coincidence.

Judging by how Our Ciel says "Um..." before stating his name I assume he hasn't prepared himself for a situation like the one unfolding before him to occur. Also, he was unprepared for the first test that he had to pass through in order to become recruited as one of the circus members. He had no idea as to how or when Sebastian would help him until his darts were surprisingly hitting the target after every single throw. This means that Ciel was utterly and completely unaware of how things would play out when he arrived. So, back to my original statement, the fact that he paused and THEN claimed his name was Finnian could be an instinctive and reflex statement as again, he was caught off guard and responded with the first thing that came to his mind. Why Finnian? Perhaps because that was his name?

Then we have Joker responding with, "That's a grand name," and we know for a fact that Vincent mentioned this:

The fact that Joker says 'grand', not 'beautiful' or 'nice', could indicate that even he himself has not heard of the name often (if ever) and is amazed by how a mere 'pageboy' could possess such a name. Moreover, the word 'grand' itself has royal connotations to it, giving one the impression of something majestic and glorious just like how the Phantomhives are perceived as.
