Spending time with kids always reminds me how much I love the way they play. I’ll be like “hey kid look, this little bug is called an isopod it’s related to crabs and it eats dead plants” and they’ll immediately respond with something like “cool let’s play isopods we have to collect dead leaves as fast as we can and if we don’t get enough we die of starvation and have a bug funeral”
What an amazing way to process new information or explore an idea! It’s important to remember these kinds of games are not random or pointless; playing is how kids learn.

I love Matilda because it's a story about a child who sees injustice around her and gets mad about it and questions why things aren't fair, and instead of the ending being that she learns how the world works and that life isn't fair, she catapults one of the adults who abused her out of a building with her mind

whenever i see talk about third spaces people pretty much always mean bars, or other places of consumption. Nobody really talks about something like a public bathhouse that would be a massive boon for local homeless people, or making local laundromats a free public service. These can, and I think absolutely should be valuable and very utilitarian third spaces for community building.

One of many pieces of information rarely discussed that has stuck with me in studying the Holocaust in a literacy class is that people who survived the death camps often did not survive starvation. It is very difficult for a severely malnourished body to recover from starvation. A severely malnourished body will struggle to process food at all, and many people die in the process of “refeeding.” This is called refeeding syndrome for this reason. Reintroducing food can and often is fatal without careful, medical guidance.
Starvation is one of the most common and effective forms of genocide. What makes it effective is that past a certain point, even if aid has been delivered, it is not enough to save someone from death by starvation. What also makes it effective is that withholding food is viewed as a passive consequence of political turmoil rather than an intentional act of violence among a people. You will see more people die from starvation in genocides across history because it is an effective way to kill many people without the use of state resources.
The starvation of Gaza is intentional. The United States and Israel may gesture that they are delivering or allowing aid into Gaza, but in reality they are active participants in the starvation of Gaza by destroying medical infrastructure, limiting the amount of aid “allowed” in, and blocking aid trucks from entering. Throwing food into Gaza by airdrop at this point in the genocide will not be enough without medical infrastructure to refeed a severely malnourished population. Many will die anyways. Many have already.

yes i support all mental health conditions but you should shower every day and if you can’t clean your own living area you’re gross and you have to talk in a way i understand you can be weird but not that weird and you can’t have really bad impulsive thoughts and you can’t have ritualistic behaviour and you can’t ever act out or else you’re using your mental health as an excuse and you need to be well-groomed and you should be employed or a student and — Wait what do you mean I don’t support mental health conditions? I just said I did, didn’t I?

in my head the star wars equivalent of tswift is some human woman named tay’lor spiff or something and her stans are losing their minds over theories that she’s secretly a jedi singing about the horrors of war, even though she’s from a neutral system that hasn’t seen so much as a moral panic in 50 years

I’m graduating with my bachelor’s degree next week and my heart hurts because I didn’t really get nearly as much of the college “experience” as I could have, nor do I have the research experience I need—I wasted so much time being tired.
I know consciously that a) I probably shouldn’t be taking too much of what my parents say to heart because they’re abled and went to college 30 years ago, and b) I should be immensely proud of myself for getting this far given the barriers I’ve faced…but that doesn’t make the emotional impact any easier. I’m so lonely and so tired of feeling like I’m falling behind.

*something minimally embarrassing happens on a light hearted tv show*
me to myself, covering my eyes with a blanket: "don't worry baby it's not real, it's only actors. In real life embarrassing things don't actually happen"
