Ugh just found another person who went and reposted my katakuri art and even went through the trouble of editing out my watermark. Then they wrote “Follow @themselves” in the description...they tagged me in the photo but like no, you didn’t ask permission and I don’t allow people to edit my work, esp not to crop out my name to advertise your own page. Most people don’t even hover over the tags in the photo itself if its not in the description like...why would you do that sighs
This kind of stuff really stresses me out, I honestly feel less stressed just not doing OP fanart anymore because that means less stuff for people to repost. I love One Piece and I love the supportive people in the fandom but because it’s such a hugely popular series my OP art has been reposted and stolen the most out of all the other art I drew, and it really makes me not want to do OP fanart anymore

weeps weeps weeps I just discovered perspective, curve, line, etc rulers in clip studio paint. This is what I get for using 10 year old outdated software, I had no idea such boons to humanity were a thing. I am having an epiphany about the nature of life and existence

Phew I think I’m just going to go back to my anatomy studies instead of continuing to peck away at this painting, the only thing that’s really getting me stuck is the anatomy and it’s clearly because I jumped into the painting before I finished my studies. Need to catch myself before doing this again, this was the reason I stopped painting fanart of people in the first place, my skill level just isn’t quite there yet
I’ll just promise to come back to it when I’m ready

I’m just going to take a moment to silently weep on my sideblog about how hard it is to study drawing people in perspective hahahaha cries
It’s honestly thanks to drawing Katakuri last year that I really began to think seriously about working harder at improving my art skills and thanks to the kindness and support from all of the people who followed me for my art and graphics that I developed the confidence I needed to think I could improve at it. I started this sideblog so I could ramble about One Piece without alienating the people who follow my main blog for other stuff. I’ve loved One Piece since way before I started using tumblr 7 years ago but for some reason or another never really participated in the OP fandom on tumblr until just last year. I sort of have a thing where I don’t like to post a lot of text posts there and mostly post my art so all I feel comfortable doing is rambling in my tags under my art
But I have nothing new to post there today because the painting I’m studying is kicking my ass. It’s humbling to see how bad at perspective I am, everyone has been really nice to me about my art but it’s painfully obvious to me how much I don’t know. But I’m going to stop being afraid of drawing stuff that’s hard for me, last year I remember being really afraid of color theory and for some reason this year I realized it just clicked as if it’s always been there? So I think I need to trust my brain more and just keep working hard at studying art and hope I get better at perspective hahaha. My dream is to be able to paint Katakuri and a bunch of my other fave characters in cool perspective poses (like imagine if I could paint dynamic dramatic scenes like the way Oda makes his panels look? But in 3D color in my style) so it’s going to be a long journey phew

This is an excellent post, I love it when an artist’s effort and skill is appreciated like this. Perspective is SO important
can we talk about how beautiful this panel is?
A lot of people shit on One Piece for “having and ugly art style” but almost all panels have such an easy grace and cool composition/perspective that most people don’t even notice it anymore.
Look how this cool this pose is:
Tumblr media
There’s a lot of swordfighting in manga, but when was the last time you saw a perspective like this? It’s very unusual, with spottyhat’s hand pretty much in our face, pulled back, but pointing forward.
Just look at these perspecitves!
Tumblr media
A beautiful low angle, showing the moment when the guy forward cut the other in the back. It’s 2 moves in 1,  one when the forward guy stops and puts his katana away, and two when the other falls to his knees.
But even if he wasn’t, the angle and the composition, hell, their size itself would tell us who’s victorious.
Tumblr media
Or this! Guy finds a cursed sword, and decides he likes it, despite the long list of its previous dead owners.
The way the sword looks large from this angle, they are almost the same size! It’s basically in our face, we can see the pattern on the blade. It feels dangerous.
And the way we see the guy looking upwards! It could mean a power imbalance, if not for the grin, since this angle usually makes the subject more “innocent and puppy eyed” (remember the emo trend?) but it’s this way it’s a challage.
Who is the stronger, the man or the sword?
Or look at this:
Tumblr media
It’s no less than 3 moves in 1 panel, which is insane, but it’s so natural that you dont even notice it.
1) the two marines swinging their swords to cut Luffy,  2) Ace jumping in to push him down, + Luffy crouching down as a result 3) and the sword going through Ace (because he made of fire, but that’s not relevant here.)
Sometimes the panels can feel a bit overcrowded, but they make the conversation’s flow feel more easy and more like as if you were really there in the room with them:
(read everything right to left)
Tumblr media
Now look at the version where I put in some extra panel dividers:
Tumblr media
It just doesn’t feel the same, does it?
Or, one of my current favourites. Let’s break down this (pre-)fight scene:
It’s sunglasses guy trying to stomp on the spotty pants, mainly because he is an asshole, but it’s mostly the past grudges. Here he is, moving his leg, spotty pants desperate and doesn’t want to die.
Tumblr media
But.
But!
Tumblr media
THE FUCK!
The cavalry is here! HOLY HELL!
Tumblr media
Stunned silence. Snot guy is shocked. Bird guy and strawhat guy are motionless, lookin at each other standing over the saved man; the tension in the air is tangible between them.
Spotty pants is pretty fucking unhappy that he has failed and had to be saved, but being alive is still better than dead, so.
Tumblr media
And yes!
You felt the tension of the other panel right!
It’s a close-up of that one; they are still motionless and in the same position, but now we see their eyes and faces, confirming what we thought was going on.  There was so much raw force in that movement, yet since strawhat’s drawn completely motionless in every picture, instead of him jumping in, the way it’s stopped seem so effortless on his part. (Also this is where the anime adaptation failed - they showed stawhat guy looking up only now, instead of keeping the scene motionless. It’s a shame.)
Even if I didn’t know a thing about them, I’d sill be hyped for what happens next after this, but one thing is for sure.
An ass is about to be kicked, the question is whose it will be.
It’s pretty fucking awesome, have a look at it in whole:
Tumblr media
(Also, this is where one page ends, and you gotta spend those extra seconds to find out wheather he’d live. The rest in one huge page.)
Tumblr media
Oda is really brilliant when it comes to doing the panels and layouts. Look at this character introduction, which is arguably one of the best in the whole series.
Tumblr media
First, out of nowhere, there is a huge-ass explosion on an island. It’s a pirate’s base that we know but we haven’t heard of him for hundreds of chapters. We don’t know wheather he’s dead or alive.
The next is a narration bubble.
The is never any narration in One Piece.
Tumblr media
Pretty cold, isn’t it?
Then again, it’s a manga about pirates. The weak fail all the time.
We are also shown that the impact came from a man-shaped hole in the ground.
Tumblr media
W-what? Who is that? Isn’t it the weak that die? Will he jump?
Tumblr media
It’s still the same moment frozen in time, but from a different angle while we are told more about this man.
Who the hell is still alive after all of these, and more importantly, why would he want to throw away the life he miracoulasly managed to keep so far?
Why is no one stopping him?
Tumblr media
So he’s jumping down from the island in the sky. That seems definitely too extra for a suicide.
Tumblr media
You really feel like you’re too falling while reading a long panel like this.
Also, it’s divided 3 times at the top,  breaking the continuity. It’s not a sudden, quick drop; it takes a long time to fall through 10 km of clouds.
We “jump in time” with these, the exact same mechanism as in the group panel, where the divders broke the flow.
And the end is the long panel of the impact, the one we started out with.
Yet all of these panels the same, lagre picture, not seperate ones, so it’s still nice to look at.
Tumblr media
It’s also the same moment from two angles, the first from the point of view of others(as all the other ones before), but then, we are suddenly see the world as this mystery (dead) madman who’s just jumped from the sky.
Also, what the fuck is the narrator saying? Has the writer gone mad? How is this possible? The is never any narration, what can possibly be so important that suddenly a “voice from above” is telling us all this?
Tumblr media
We see a huge shockwave again, probably coming from the hole, with the other man scattering and voicing the readers’ thoughts aloud.
But we also see what the narrator is saying.
And it can’t be, right?
No one can survive that. And yet, we start to wonder…
Tumblr media
And fuck!!  We’re right. The man who’s just fallen 10kms from the sky is not only pulling himself up from the hole, but has already took out some others.
The original quistion still stands, as in who the fuck this might possibly be??
Tumblr media
SO.
BASICALLY.
He knew he woud not die, just hurled himself down from the sky for fun?? And all he got is a headache??
Tumblr media
HOLY SHIT!
IT’S THE GUY WE’VE BEEN HEARING ABOUT FOR HUNDREADS OF CHAPTERS!!!
AND HE DEFINITELY LIVES UP TO THE HYPE.
Remember, we started at “the weak die” and we progressed to “this guy is trying to die so he must be weak” to “he’s definitely dead” to “this guy can’t even kill himself he’s so strong and he finds it funny”.
Wow.
What a ride. And all of this, only in a few pages.
Or my other favourite, the end of the Katakuri fight (chapter 896 is basically just one huge fantastic ticking bomb, but that’s a different, brilliant matter), or more precisely these few panels:
Tumblr media
Not a word exchanged, yet it show us so much about the quiet, but all-encompassing, deep kindness Luffy has. He’s standing above an unconsicous enemy who spent the better half of the day trying to put an end to Luffy’s attemt to join with his crew again, and what does he do?
He puts a hat to his face, to hide his fanged mouth he’s been trying to hide from the world for decades.
And leaves without a word.
We don’t see his expression, but actions speak louder that that.
Anyway, I just wanted to say how I liked the first Law-Hawkins panel, but you know what? Let’s show some appreciation to the insane skills that made One Piece the brilliant manga that it is today.
Here, have a beautiful Ryuuma:
Tumblr media
UPDATE: here’s part 3. and part 2. + the tag is op meta/op panel stuff)

“ There was another research I read that showed heavy metal is actually listened to by rather shy, sensitive, and fragile people. Sometimes they need a good guitar riff to get them going that's all. “
“ Judgy people tend to be put off by the otward spikiness, so they self-select out of talking to these people. Which works for introverts and people who are sensitive. “
“ It kept people at arms length. “
These are broad generalizations and certainly not applicable to everyone but I still cracked up thinking about Katakuri in this context LMAO
Just read a Reddit post about a scientific study of how liking heavy metal/rap doesn’t necessarily mean one has a maladaptive personality, and in the comments there are all these people saying how the metalheads they know tend to be the nicest and gentlest people, including a comment saying: “This seems to be true of almost every metal head I have ever known. Most of them are really laid back, nice people. With all the dark clothes, leather, metal spikes/chains, they don’t look the part though”
And I can’t help but think: Katakuri

More and more it feels like the Ancient Kingdom was some really advanced civilization that created some extremely powerful energy source/tool that could have changed the world for the better, but in the wrong hands it could have caused incredible destruction as well, and maybe the precursors to the Celestial Dragons destroyed the Kingdom cause they were afraid/misunderstood it, and instead chose to hide the existence of it for the safety of the world. And over the centuries the people who started out trying to protect the world instead became corrupt by the power they were sitting over, like dragons on a treasure pile. It honestly feels almost like an allegory for nuclear power in the real world haha. Nuclear power in the real world is potentially the greatest and cleanest source of energy the world has right now, but because of fears of its misuse we still don’t trust it compared to things like solar power and fossil fuels. Fascinating
Just WHAT did Roger find on that final Poneglyph on Raftel?! There’s no way both Shanks and Roger would willingly protect the status quo of the Celestial Dragons unless they both thought the world was still better off under their rule. Shanks most certainly would be protecting Roger’s interests after all this time until the “right” person came along. That must be related to Imu and the existence of some God weapon that is super dangerous and would make whoever is in control of it the King of the World, like Rocks wanted to become. Are they waiting for someone like Luffy? Or are they waiting for the world to unite in their desire for a more just world, which likely will happen under Luffy? SO HYPE.
And Oden being an ex WB crewmember who saw enough value in Roger’s journey to defect? Man what the heck were you up to Roger?!?!? ughhh

Katakuri’s Backstory Revealed
https://twitter.com/newworldartur/status/1157871986837618688
“ Katakuri, Daifuku and Oven were all three born 48 years ago on a ship (possibly perhaps during one of Big Mom's travels as a pirate, we see him in his flashback on a ship too)
At the age of 2, 46 years ago, Katakuri tries out donuts and falls in love with them
However, at the age of 3, 45 years ago, Katakuri (corrected: stuffs too many donuts into his mouth and tears open his face) This leaves a deep scar at the sides of his face
After recovering from his wound, Katakuri kept going on about his normal life. At the age of 5, 43 years ago, he ate the Mochi Mochi no Mi and obtained its powers.
However, something happened 38 years ago, when Katakuri was 10. His little sister Brûlée, who was 5 at the time, was wounded up by some thugs, causing Katakuri to vow to hide his mouth to keep up his appearances. And that began the tale of the perfect man Katakuri... “

“As for Ace’s expressions before his death, I had this idea of transition while trying to read what was happening in his heart. And, honestly, he’s hurt, he’s hot, he’s suffering, he’s mad at himself and does not want to die. That’s what says his first expression. But I thought he would probably also want to transmit to Luffy that he does not regret the life he lived, hence this smile. After all, we smile to crying babies to calm them down, don’t we ? It’s kinda the same. I see his grin as the ultimate expression of his love to those who are still in this world.”
— Eiichiro Oda, in OP 61, about Ace’s expression before his death (via miikassas)

back when I joined tumblr, on a friday night I could spend hours schooling down and every post would be new. I’ve seen a grand total of 5 new posts all evening. Seems like all the artists and graphic makers I used to know moved on to twitter and instagram. Maybe I should try to post more there too. x_x
