Album of the Day: Binker Golding and Elliot Galvin “Ex Nihilo” (Byrd Out)
Revisiting this sligtly slept-on album from last year that sees acclaimed young saxophonist Binker Golding, particularly famed for his duo with drummer Moses Boyd, in a duo setting with pianist Elliot Galvin, a prolific musician and composer known for his trio and solo performances and releases with the likes of Edition Records, alongside performing with Dinosaur and Emma-Jean Thackray’s Walrus.  Recorded live at Dalston’s Vortex, it was released by the fearless Byrd Out label.
What initially caught my attention on this release, was to hear two musicians who are prolific within London’s recent jazz boom, which has tended to draw more from fusion, hard bop and so-called “spiritual jazz”, veering so strongly together towards the free improvisation of elder statesmen such as Evan Parker. Though it follows Parker’s own appearances alongside Binker & Moses, and Galvin’s work with drummer Mark Sanders. The album title, “Ex Nihilo”, is Latin for “out of nothing” could well refer to how these pieces were fully improvised in the moment.
Kicking off in typical improv fashion on “Aeturnum Vale” (Goodbye Forever), Galvin’s scratchy prepared piano techniques battle with Binker’s squelching saxophone. “2ram Quod Es, Eros Quod Sum” (I was what you are, you will be what I am) takes a more atmospheric approach.  ”Ad Usum Proprium” (For Your Own Use) is the first major standout, as Binker repeats a motif throughout the piece in an astonishing feat, supposedly using circular breathing techniques, whilst Galvin’s sparing accompaniment heightens the tension.
A second highlight comes with “Aliquid Stat Pro Aliquot” (Something Stands for Something Else). An improvised conversation develops a rhythmic swing, Galvin’s repeated minimalist motif sustaining a pace under Binker’s riffing, punctuated by Galvin’s key stabbing. The record ends on a sublime high with the beautiful “Non Plus Ultra” (Peak of Perfection).  Binker’s solo introduction leads into interplay between himself and Galvin on piano. It’s understated, brooding, melancholic yet uplifting. Whilst it’s arguably the most straightforward piece on the album it is exquisite nonetheless.
For jazz fans, especially newer or younger, “Ex Nihilo” serves as an excellent introduction to the more challenging territory of improv, and will hopefully lead to a renewal and increase in live audiences for this music, where it’s vivacity and impact can be truly enjoyed. But as a recording it’s immediately more engaging than many other documents of the free or improv realm, which, lacking the live face-to-face impact, can lose some of their energy. Post lockdown, I look forward to seizing the chance to witness this special duo in the flesh, and further recordings to come.

Album of the Day: Gary Bartz & Maisha - Night Dreamer Direct-To-Disc Sessions (Night Dreamer Records).
The third release from Night Dreamer’s essential “Direct-to-Disc” sessions sees an incredible meeting between legendary US saxophonist Gary Bartz and UK jazz ensemble, Maisha, featuring two Bartz classics and three brand new joint songs written by both Bartz & Maisha in close collaboration.
Maisha’s explosive sound appears to be particularly influenced by the 70s oeuvre of legendary figures such as Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane and of course, Gary Bartz. Which makes this collaboration even more special. Bartz was first invited to share a stage with Maisha by Gilles Peterson to headline the inaugural We Out Here festival. The resulting musical chemistry was so successful that a European tour followed, and subsequently Maisha and Bartz headed to Artone Studios to record a special direct-to-disc recording for Night Dreamer Records.
Whilst Bartz and Maisha reinvent classic Bartz compositions “Uhuru Sasa” and “Dr Follows Dance”, extending the pieces into long piece improvised grooves, their recording session gave birth to three brand new joint compositions, written the very same day. These include the propulsive “Leta’s Dance” that magically combines the Bartz’ soulful musical lyricism with Maisha’s African-jazz influences, and the organic jazz funk of “Harlem to Haarlem”, featuring a hot solo from guest trumpeter Axel Kaner-Lidstrom (Cykada, Levitation Orchestra).
A meeting of talents, minds & generations, captured in a unique and pure manner.  Maisha reach new heights whilst we find Bartz reinvigorated, and both artists in tune to the spirit of the other. (Selected by Oli Brunetti)

Album of the Day: Awkward Corners “Dislocation Songs” (Shapes of Rhythm)
Under his ‘Awkward Corners’ banner, producer, musician, DJ, compiler and writer, Chris Menist, weaves together a collection of ‘Dislocation Songs’. Distopian fragements of ‘downtempo’ music drawing on minimalism, ambient, instrumental hip hop and wider realms of instrumental music, not forgetting Chris’ vast South Asian musical knowledge (see his label/band/club night Paradise Bangkok). Menist is found behind all instruments and programming, with the occasional assistance of Sarathy Korwar on tabla, pitching delayed, flanged and distorted beats and tones against tablas, congas and filtered balafons and illimbas. The meditative, yet uneasy feeling Menist has created makes even more sense understanding the intention in which he created these song - initially reacting to the UK’s 2016 Brexit reponse and the country’s political and social direction since. ‘Dislocation Songs’ is near-perfect album for our times - a snapshot of musical inspiration and aspiration, light and darkness, introspection and receptiveness. Album of the Day: Soft Power “Brink of Extinction” (RR Gems)
One of our favourite surprises this year came from a completely new band to our ears. Helsinki-based Soft Power have released a beautiful summery album somewhere between free jazz and psychedelic rock that is a sheer joy to listen to, especially in these anxiety-ridden times. Led by Mikael Jurmu, clearly one-to-watch, the sextet’s laid Back grooves provide ample grounding for Rhodes, flute and saxophones to effortlessly float over. Record label RR Gems’ perfect track record continues following essential releases from Muriel Grossman and Brahja.

Single of the Day:  Alex Figueira & Maxado “Quando Será” (Music With Soul).
Alex Figueira (Conjunto Papa Upa, Fumaça Preta) teams up with Brazil’s leading rocksteady songwriter, Maxado, to create another impossible crossover, connecting the dots of the vast tropical music map that have remained apart for far too long.
What if the now-legendary producer Lee Perry had recorded & produced the nascent Wailers trio of Neville Livingston, Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, not in Kingston, the scorching hot Jamaican capital, but instead in Belém, an even hotter city, at the heart of the Brazilian Amazon.
Whilst Kingston’s airwaves and street parties were dominated by the locally produced rocksteady, ska and reggae, Belém was dancing to it’s own beat of carimbó and siriá.The chorus of “Quando Será” is unnervingly apt for our times tool, “Quando será que eu vou te ver?”, or “When will I see you?” the song asks. Well until we see each other, Music With Soul offers some musical relief in the form of this collaborative song.
The B side offers a beautiful touching instrumental version, led by the impeccable flute rendition of Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Gabriel Milliet. His delicate phrasing will give you goosebumps.
