Dude I wish Jewish holidays were that simple- other then Tue B’shvat. That’s literally plant and tree day. We celebrate the new crops at the start of spring. It’s so simple.
But Purim? Damn, the story for that is way more then “people tried to kill us, let’s eat.” It’s told more like a fairy tale than anything, and more people consider it the jolliest time of the year, a lot like how Christians treat Christmas. It’s way more like, “this is the history behind the holiday, let’s sit down in a circle and eat traditional chocolate filled pastries while I tell you a story like it came out of a picture book, but it’s going to be way longer then that. After that you can go outside and dance to really loud music in your cool costume.”
Also you completely missed a huge detail when you explained Yom Kippur. No one can drive a car, or use electricity for a day and a half. While technically electricity is still running in every household (to keep food from expiring and such) the best part about it is the bikes.
Like. No one can drive other then police and ambulances. That means that literally every road is open for people to bike on. And the genius who thought that was a good idea spread it around and now EVERYBODY’S doing it. Like, it became an informal tradition to go out and ride your bike with friends and family. It’s the best part of the holiday!
Chanukah is also really fun, and you totally undermined the best parts of the holiday. It’s the holiday with the most traditional songs other then Passover, and the traditional pastry you eat is like an overly filled doughnut with no hole in the middle, with super fancy decorations (if you’re not buying the cheap one, that btw, still tastes incredible). You light candles, sing songs, and eat chocolatey/jammy goodness.
Anyway, explain it to me like I’m five years old, but accurately with the fun details included.
I get the “we almost died so let’s eat thing” because most Jewish traditions are based on that, (for a good fucking reason btw our culture is so universally hated all throughout history) but then you miss the true spirit of the the holidays, and that’s celebrating together.
Passing these traditions to the children, meeting up with family and friends, loving our culture together.
Thats the part I want to love about being Jewish when I celebrate these holidays, not just remembering how my ancestors died or almost died a long time ago.
Because genuinely, that’s sounds SO depressing.
someone explain the jewish holidays to me like i'm 5 years old
Ah yes. The symptoms of gay fever, sniffling and watery eyes. I’m sorry, there is no cure you just gotta endure it.
I am having the worst gay fever I’ve had in months, maybe years. My eyes are watering, I can’t stop sniffling, even the meds aren’t helping. Surely, I will soon perish.
I was today years old when I learned that when you type “otp: true” in AO3 search results it filters out fics with additional ships, leaving only the fics where your otp is the main ship
I’m blown away… what a way to start the day, listening to this.
i cannot be the first person to post this here but i am going so fucking insane about the gaia music collective's one day choir singing wait for me. the opening harmonies are you KIDDING me
For anyone out there who needs this- know that you are not alone.
hey so protip if you have abusive parents and need to get around the house as quietly as possible, stay close to furniture and other heavy stuff because the floor is settled there and it’s less likely to creak
I can’t focus on what’s cooler, the actual great advice I just got that I will definitely be using soon thanks btw or how the notes are broken what?????
