Bitcoin hits US$50K for 1st time since 2021. What’s behind the surge

Bitcoin BTC= hit the $50,000 level for the first time in more than two years as the world’s largest cryptocurrency was buoyed by expectations of interest rate cuts later this year and last month’s regulatory nod for U.S. exchange-traded funds designed to track its price.

The cryptocurrency has risen 16.3 per cent so far this year, on Monday touching its highest since Dec. 27, 2021. At 12:56 p.m. EST (1756 GMT), bitcoin was up 4.96 per cent on the day at $49,899, having oscillated around the $50,000 level. “$50,000 is a significant milestone for bitcoin after the launch of spot ETFs last month not only failed to elicit a move above this key psychological level but led to a 20 per cent sell-off,” said Antoni Trenchev, co-founder of crypto lending platform Nexo. Crypto stocks also enjoyed a boost on Monday, with crypto exchange Coinbase COIN.O up 4.9 per cent and crypto miners Riot Platforms RIOT.O and Marathon Digital MARA.O up 10.8 per cent and 11.9 per cent, respectively. Shares of software firm MicroStrategy MSTR.O — a notable buyer of bitcoin — were up 10.2 per cent. The price of ether, the second-largest cryptocurrency, was up 4.12 per cent at $2,607.57. Global stock indexes also edged higher on Monday, as traders looked for cues on when the U.S. Federal Reserve might begin cutting interest rates. Analysts and financial market expectations both point to May as a potential start for rate cuts this year.

ETF exuberance

The primary driver behind bitcoin’s recent price appreciation “can be attributed to the increased inflow into BTC spot ETFs,” said Matteo Greco, a research analyst at fintech investment firm Fineqia International, in a research note. The U.S. securities regulator on Jan. 10 approved the first U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs, a watershed for the world’s largest cryptocurrency and the broader crypto industry, which had been trying to bring such a product to market for more than a decade. Greco in particular noted that outflows from Grayscale Investment’s Grayscale Bitcoin Trust GBTC.P — which received approval from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)in January to convert to an ETF — have begun to slow. “While GBTC recorded a cumulative outflow of $415 million last week, representing a significant reduction from previous weeks, BTC Spot ETFs saw a total net inflow of about $1.2 billion during the same period, marking the highest weekly inflow since their launch,” he said. Analysts at Bernstein have estimated that flows into the new ETFs will build up gradually to cross $10 billion in 2024, while Standard Chartered analysts have said the products could draw $50 billion to $100 billion this year alone. Other analysts have said inflows could be $55 billion over five years. The market is also eyeing seven pending applications in front of the U.S. SEC for ETFs tied to the spot price of ether. The SEC is due to deliver a final decision on several of those proposals by May. Investors are also looking eagerly to the next bitcoin “halving,” expected in April, analysts say. That process is designed to slow the release of bitcoin, whose supply is capped at 21 million tokens – of which 19 million have already been created. Bitcoin rallied on the previous three halvings, the most recent of which was in 2020. “With fourth bitcoin halving, a first Fed interest rate cut and potential ethereum spot ETF approval, all are significant for what is the smallest, youngest and most retail-dominated asset class,” said Ben Laidler, global markets strategist at eToro. Total solar eclipse: All you need to know about the rare celestial event

A total solar eclipse is set to darken skies across central and Eastern Canada in a rare celestial event last witnessed in the country 45 years ago.

On April 8, the eclipse’s path will cross through Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador. Several cities and towns will go into complete darkness during the day for a few minutes. A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth, aligning perfectly and completely blocking the sunlight. Typically, a total solar eclipse is visible once roughly every 18 months or once every one to two years from somewhere on Earth, but for a given location this can be a very rare occurrence coming after a gap of centuries. “It’s one of those once-in-a-lifetime things that you know you might not be able to get to experience again,” said Ilana MacDonald, outreach co-ordinator for the Dunlap Institute for Astronomy & Astrophysics at the University of Toronto. The last time the path of a total solar eclipse crossed Canada was in 1979. For Kingston, Ont., it’s the first one in nearly 700 years, said Robert Knobel, associate professor and head of the department of physics, engineering physics and astronomy at Queen’s University in the city. “It’s a beautiful, natural phenomenon and it allows us to actually think about our place in the universe,” he said in an interview with Global News. “It really allows us a chance to experience astronomical phenomena, just by walking outside.”

Who can view it?

Millions of people in parts of central and eastern Canada will get to witness this celestial event. The eclipse will be entering over Mexico’s Pacific coast, dashing up through Texas and Oklahoma, and crisscrossing the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and New England, before exiting over Eastern Canada into the Atlantic. The total solar eclipse will have a narrow path roughly 185 kilometres wide.

In Ontario, places like Fort Erie and Niagara Falls will be “really good” spots to view the eclipse since the central path of totality is going through Lake Ontario, he said. However, both Ottawa and Toronto, like many other cities, will only get a partial solar eclipse, in which the sun is not hidden in totality. In Quebec, Montreal, Sherbrooke, and the Saint Lawrence Valley will also get a good view. The eclipse will occur between mid and late afternoon, depending on location, in Canada.

What will it look like?

As the moon starts to obscure the sun, it will initially start out as a partial eclipse, when the sky gets darker and it becomes cooler. “What you’ll see is a little bit of a crescent as the moon shadow passes in front of the sun,” Knobel said. But the moment it goes from a partial eclipse to totality, you will notice a “dramatic change in temperature and light,” MacDonald said. “As the moon completely covers the sun, you’ll have this big halo of light around the sun and that’s the sun’s corona, which you can’t usually see when the sun is just in the sky, because the sun itself is too bright,” she explained.

Warren Dan Falk, a science journalist in Toronto, has travelled across the world and witnessed five total solar eclipses, the most recent one in Oregon in 2017. He said at the time of totality people will get to see a little black disk surrounded by halo and it will appear as if there is a little hole in the sky. “It’ll be this very eerie, kind of surreal phenomenon that’s really not like anything else you can see,” he said. “I’m hoping that lots of people, especially folks who haven’t had the chance to see this phenomenon before, are able to experience this.” The total solar eclipse can last between one and four minutes, MacDonald said. During this time, birds will start to react as if it’s nighttime and could start to fall asleep. Meanwhile, flowers will start to close just for those few minutes. When totality is over, it’ll get bright again. The peak spectacle on April 8 will last up to four minutes and 28 seconds in the path of total darkness.

How can you safely view it?

In preparation for the event, some school boards in Ontario and Quebec have already cancelled classes on April 8 out of an abundance of caution. According to the Canadian Space Agency, looking directly at the sun without appropriate protection can lead to serious problems such as partial or complete loss of eyesight. Experts stress that the danger of looking directly at the sun is not any different when there is a total solar eclipse as it would be on any other day of the year. It’s just that one is more tempted to look up when there is a total solar eclipse. “It’s always dangerous to look directly at the sun without proper protection because the sun is very bright,” MacDonald said. The best way to protect yourself is by wearing eclipse glasses, made up of aluminized polyester, when you do look up during a partial eclipse. People can also use cardboard and poke a hole through it or even a colander and cheese grater would work. In the moments of totality, when the sun is completely covered, it is actually safe to take your glasses off for a few minutes safely and look up, Knobel and Falk said. After this year, the next time a solar eclipse will be visible from Canadian soil will be in 2039, when the path of totality cuts the very northern part of Yukon. Read the full article

Joly calls NATO ‘united’ as Trump says he’d encourage Russian attacks on members

Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly says NATO’s military alliance is more “united than ever before” but stopped short of joining other allies in their criticism of U.S. Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump, after he threatened to abandon members who miss their spending targets.

Canada has for years fallen short of hitting the agreed upon target to spend two per cent of GDP on defence, as have other members. “NATO has kept us safe as a country and has kept all those part of the alliance safe,” Joly told reporters Monday. “We’ve done a lot, but we need to do more.” Her remarks come two days after the former U.S. president said he would “encourage” Russia to “do whatever the hell they want” to NATO allies who don’t pay their bills. “Well sir, if we don’t pay, and we’re attacked by Russia — will you protect us?” Trump quoted an unnamed leader as saying. “I said: ‘You didn’t pay? You’re delinquent?’ He said: ‘Yes, let’s say that happened.’ No, I would not protect you. In fact, I would encourage them (Russia) to do whatever the hell they want. You gotta pay,” Trump said. Joly would not answer when asked whether Trump’s comments put allied troops at risk, but insists NATO has grown stronger with the inclusion of Finland and upcoming addition of Sweden. “The minister of defence, , is heading to NATO in Brussels later this week. And, we will continue to have a strong voice at the table,” said Joly. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was more blunt, blasting Trump for comments he called “irresponsible and dangerous,” as fears deepen that Trump’s possible return to the White House could allow Russia to expand its aggression beyond Ukraine. “No one can play, or ‘deal,’ with Europe’s security,” added Scholz. Meanwhile, U.S. President Joe Biden called Trump’s NATO comments “appalling.” One of NATO’s foundational principles is Article 5, which commits to collective defence and the vow that an attack against one member is an attack against all, and will result in allied action. But Trump has often lamented other members are not pulling their weight. A leaked Pentagon assessment obtained by the Washington Post last April said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told NATO officials Canada would never meet the alliance’s target. While Trudeau and Trump had a frosty relationship the last time he was in office, Joly insists Canada will be prepared if Trump is re-elected. “You’ll always hear me saying the same thing, which is essentially the American people will decide. Meanwhile, we’ll be ready for their choice. We’ve been able to manage two types of administration in the White House.” Sebastian Skamski, a spokesperson for Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s office, said Canada has failed to be a strong NATO partner under the Liberal government. “Justin Trudeau has left us to depend on Joe Biden or Donald Trump to secure Canada for us,” Skamski said in a statement to Global News. “We will restore Canada as a reliable partner to our NATO allies.” Joly’s cautious tone comes as Canadian diplomats speak with advisers and congressional allies of Trump, as they prepare for the possibility of a second Trump presidency.
