This torii gate is the largest of its kind, by dimension. It’s located at the entrance to the Meiji Shrine in Harajuku, one of the livelier prefectures in Tokyo. It’s an impressive piece of architecture and the shrine itself is a wonderful place to visit.

Paul was a patrol cop who I would run into on occasion while covering crime stories. Some cops can be hostile towards the media, but Paul acted in a normal way, and he treated me with respect as a person. I was sad to learn that it was Paul who was arrested for rape of a former porn performer and working escort in a short-stay hotel. As the trial went on, details emerged of how he entered the woman’s room, in uniform, under the auspices of official police business. Women have the decked stacked against them in these types of trials, and the fact that the victim was actively advertising her escort service on Craigslist swayed me to believe that he would not be convicted of the charges. I was wrong, and Paul was convicted and sentenced to 20 years for rape, with a special allegation of abusing his position of authority. His daughters, in the background, attended the trial and had to hear the sordid details.

So the guy on the right had his car stolen and when the police arrived, he didn’t think they were being responsive enough. To ramp up the investigation, he told them that his infant daughter was in the backseat when the car was stolen, turning the incident into a child abduction. Police take child abduction very seriously, and a lot of things get set into motion when this occurs, including the issuance of an Amber Alert. Amber Alerts are monitored by the FBI and forwarded to INTERPOL as a matter of procedure. The investigators found the man’s daughter within hours, and he was arrested on a slew of charges.
