hey, if you don't mind could i ask you what art program and brushes you use?

i use clip studio paint pro, and the brushes i tend to use the most are two tbh, this mameo brush for lineart (any sketches i post are done with this) and this flat oil brush from one of frenden's csp brushpacks:

picture example bcs i cant actually remember which pack i got it from ERM. i believe its the paint/wet media pack but it mightve been the big 800+ pack... its probably the former. its labeled as "oil flat" either way

decided to go fawk it and make it so that nattramn and basilisks are able to hybridise in pareidolia yay!!! more info under cut

as for how its possible, irl clearly these species would be too distant from eachother to hybridise but ok its fantasy and also. i think part of it might be that as basilisk ancestors evolved their odd trait of picking up aspects of other fauna around them during fetal development, it just resulted in their genes being really wack and spontaneous and for some reason that made it so that they can procreate with nattramn again. i think the ancestors shown in the last image for example could not concieve together bcs the basilisk ancestor species had not evolved the wacky genes thing yet.

societally i think it varies on how they're treated. generally hybrids are accepted as parts of their societies, but depending on several factors they can be somewhat alienated. in nattramn society, "basramn" hybrids are generally more well accepted due to a combination of societal and religious reasons. "nattlisks" usually mingle with basilisk communities much easier for similar reasons. the kind of folklore that sprung up surrounding them in these communities may depend on the fact that basramns have an easier time fitting into nattramn society (due to nattramn putting a lot of importance on flight) while nattlisks have an easier time shapeshifting and can usually fit in basilisk communities easier because of it (basilisks celebrate their shapeshifting ability culturally quite strongly), and the folklore sprung up as sort of a "post hoc" justification for potential alienation/embracing of hybrids. because of this this means that union between a basilisk and a nattramn and whether or not its accepted depends on the context bcs of what hybrid it produces. thinking this may be further reinforced with old legends about mythical (or real, potentially) historical figures in their cultures. (have to think more about this)

also i dont think ive mentioned it here but the reason why these hybrids arent TOO uncommon to see is that nattramn and basilisks are closely intertwined, and while its unusual to see a nattramn mingling with basilisk communities, its quite common for basilisk communities to exist within nattramn settlements and their attitudes towards one another are generally amicable/positive.

"nattlisk" and "basramn" are not canon terms for them, and in universe theyre generally referred to either as basilisk, nattramn or harpy depending on what the observer/local culture thinks they are lol. humans especially dont really know the difference - i think maybe nattlisks may be interpreted as some sort of other vätte like a rå or a troll due to their more humanoid look

generally have similar lifespans to nattramn/basilisks, overall they do rather well for being hybrids other than miscarriages (or, well, since theyre egg layers, failed/unhatched eggs) and nattlisks being more susceptible to illness early in life.

In regards to the lichen comic, was the little girl at risk of being infected or was its a positive little whimsical scene?

hihi it was the latter!

sjörå lichen are only infectious under certain periods, which come up pretty sparsely during their final life stage at that! most lichen at this stage only have around two reproductive windows before they die (although this can vary as with most things). most of the time they are just kind of Chilling and not producing spores. when they are producing spores they don't release them into the air, but the water. the way the infection tends to occur is through either drinking unfiltered/unboiled water or eating fish that have swallowed the spores as the spores have adapted to survive dormant inside of them in hopes of transferring into a human host by getting eaten!

because of how sparse their reproductive periods are and the circumstances required for an infection to occur the sjörå are not able to really put a huge dent into human populations. but it also means that sjörå infections are pretty cyclical and the amount of infections suddenly shoot up ("sjörå years" i guess u could call it) before abruptly cutting off after. i dont think humans really know at that point though that the lichen are what causes a sudden rise of disappearences - but this is most likely one of the factors that contributed to the belief of many vättar abducting humans in some fashion.

so, the kid in the comic turned out okay hihi, and i think that that particular sjörå's reproductive period is quite far off... they are friends to this day hihii

When the basilisk are in their bird-like forms do humans see them for what they really are? Is it only when they're in their humanoid forms can they disguise themselves?

yeah! essentially, all basilisk forms function the same way and possess the illusory effect while its not present in their basilisk form. their basilisk form is their "baseline".

when in any other form other than their "baseline" they "exude" more anda* than usual which is what contributes to it not being percieved as it looks like physically. they don't do so in their basilisk form, so it is therefore illusionless - its also not a conscious process they can turn on and off. the illusion will just work on anyone as long as the requirements for it are met!

extra little tidbit... the extra anda that they generate in their shapeshift forms also mean that they have greater caloric needs than that form would normally! obvs their caloric needs depend on the size/metabolism of the animal they are imitating, but it will tend to be a little bit greater than the average for that animal bcs of it.

*anda in case anyone needs a refresher cuz i think i just made a text post about it a whiile ago... but basically it is another form of energy in this universe much like electricity, heat energy, etc. and basically drives consciousness, perception, (self) awareness, etc.... basically the "subjective" experiences of any animal. in pareidolia most vätte abilities are driven by utilizing this form of energy. this is also the reason that most vätte "magic" tends to have things to do with illusions/communication through unorthodox means/altering perception!
