Y'all, the world is sleeping on what NASA just pulled off with Voyager 1

The probe has been sending gibberish science data back to Earth, and scientists feared it was just the probe finally dying. You know, after working for 50 GODDAMN YEARS and LEAVING THE GODDAMN SOLAR SYSTEM and STILL CHURNING OUT GODDAMN DATA.

So they analyzed the gibberish and realized that in it was a total readout of EVERYTHING ON THE PROBE. Data, the programming, hardware specs and status, everything. They realized that one of the chips was malfunctioning.

So what do you do when your probe is 22 Billion km away and needs a fix? Why, you just REPROGRAM THAT ENTIRE GODDAMN THING. Told it to avoid the bad chip, store the data elsewhere.

Sent the new code on April 18th. Got a response on April 20th - yeah, it's so far away that it took that long just to transmit.

And the probe is working again.

From a programmer's perspective, that may be the most fucking impressive thing I have ever heard.

And look, I wouldn’t call myself either a Swiftie or a hater. I actually rather enjoy her music.

But I do critique and, without dehumanizing her, I am fascinated with her as a phenomenon and the truly seismic pop figure she is, and the discourse her career has generated about wealth, whiteness, femininity, parasocial relationships, etc.

I don’t want to dissect every aspect of her personal life because that’s her business, and how she handles her story is, well, kind of what she does. But I do want to point some of these things out as they pertain to the people, and I’m afraid I will have to be somewhat psychoanalytical, but I’ll try to remain insofar as what’s been presented either as a brand image, or performance.

Matty Healy is another intriguing figure (albeit for more unfortunately unsavory reasons. I was a die-hard 1975 fan for years, until I could turn a blind eye no more), and I can totally understand why their connection was scrutinized the way it was.

Look, pop stars are brands and the parasocial relationship is fucky and weird, but for someone who claimed to be a feminist (as milquetoast a feminist as it was), it seemed like an understandable betrayal, to spend time with someone who has been literally caught doing racism on tape. Numerous times. Whose Insta handle was “The Problem Attic” for fuck knows how long. It was giving major “liberal white ally” vibes, iykyk.

But in some ways, they are unfortunately similar: insulated by their privilege, obsessed with their curated image, sometimes myopic in their scope as songwriters, and placed on an impossibly high, lonely pedestal of superstardom. (well, until The Allegations about Matty came to light.) In some ways, as artists, they have some similarities.

But when it comes to how they’re handling their artistry and image, Taylor clamps down on the control, containing the chaos, rewriting it, rebranding it. Her image is impenetrable. Matty veers hard into self-destruction. He’s deleted his accounts how many times? We’ve seen enough videos of him being visibly wasted onstage enough where it’s hard to tell where the performance ends and the person begins.

In this way, they’re also similar. Perhaps all stars are to a degree, but I think it gets especially perilous once you reach a certain level where your every move and word is scrutinized by critics and fans.

Anyway, I’m not sure if the decision to lean into a 1975-esque aesthetic was intentional on Taylor’s part (if it was, it would be an honestly brilliant move to portray the experience of being consumed by the relationship she sings about, but idk if it’s that deep, some of those lyrics are just bad lol), but it’s an interesting aspect nonetheless.

Anyway, those are some of my TTPD thoughts from someone who spends way too much time thinking about music and the people who create and consume it. It’s certainly generating Discourse lol

TTPD sounds like a 2+ hour long apology/explanation for her relationship with Matty Healy, to which we were not entitled! But relationships are weird, from someone with a massive public image, I get it!

But also. The drama. The black and white. The overly referential, slightly awkward lyrics. The performative faux-allyship and unbearable whiteness…..y’all, this could be a 1975 album. The influence is everywhere.
