Covering the Silage clamp 💪 💨 First cut silage complete! For my non-farming followers, cattle farmers grow and harvest grass in spring/ summer when grass growth is at its peak. We then store it in clamps or round bales and feed during the winter months when the grass no longer grows. 2 years ago we invested in silage mats instead of using old tyres. More automation on our farm. This feed star system was put in 3 years ago and we love it! We had a dilemma with our cows growing into larger animals through improved genetics, we needed to extend our cattle beds and in doing so would’ve meant losing part of the loafing area (Area in which the cows roam). If money wasn’t an option we would’ve knocked the shed down completely and rebuilt something bigger but we found a cheaper solution, we redesigned the shed taking out the large centre passage for the purpose of a feeder wagon to go down once a day and installed the fedstar conveyor belt system. No stampedes here, just our little brown cows is running like gazelles 🐂 We are a grazing herd, this means our cows have access to grass 24/7 during the summer months. During the three wettest months of winter we do bring our cows in and we feed them forage that we harvest in the summer months. As the weather has changed it is made the ground wet and the grass has stop growing. We keep our youngstock outside all year round, however in the winter months grass growth is slow so we use some of @jerseyroyals land over winter when they’re resting fields from potatoes. Meet our big boy Beavis! Beavis is nearly 3 years old, for the last 18 months he has been serving heifers in the fields. Today we had to make the decision to bring him home as he was too wild to be running loose for our staff and the publics safety. A mature Jersey bull in a field can be as dangerous as shark in the sea, a lot of people don't realise this! So for now we have him on a peg.
