If you were too little to remember 9/11 or you weren’t even born yet, you need to know something:

late 90s/very early 2000s commercial compilations on YouTube are like a time capsule from the pre-9/11 days, especially something like this one from January 2001:

I was 14 at this time and I remember a lot of these.

Take note of diet culture and landlines and the computers and even the “hanging chad” jokes. Also the corniness and light-heartedness.

Take note of how unsuspecting we were.

Now look at commercials from later that year, after 9/11:

Take note of how somber and traumatized everyone is, yet there’s intense patriotism. It was America the Beautiful 24/7 there for a while.

Yet life goes on and ads don’t stop for long.

But for a time channels that didn’t show the news went off air basically. And there was lot of this on most every channel:

I’ve been dying cotton with plant based material recently and I actually use a little camp stove outside! Pretty fun!

To me the smelliest stuff is metals like when I use iron or copper water.

Or onion skin. But honestly boiling up flowers and leaves isn’t bad so far, just like a potpourri scent.

Safety instructions for dyeing wool at home

Here are a few safety recommendations if you dye wool with plant-based dyes at home in your kitchen.

Put away food and clear ample space for working.

You should have seperate utensils for dyeing such as at least one big pot, a ladle, colander, cooking thermometer etc. I recommend second hand shops to get cheap equipment.

Enamel pots are ideal because they do not react with the chemicals you put inside.

Alum is a non-toxic mordant but still be careful when using it. Don’t ingest it and don’t get it in your eyes. Same goes for all other chemicals you use.

Wear gloves and an old apron. Again, the plants I use are mostly non-toxic but walnut peels can dye your hands and clothes brown, alum water may dry your skin out etc.

When you dye wool inside, always open a window and make sure there is good ventilation. Some plants such as tansy set free essential oils when you cook them that can irritiate your eyes and… well… they stink… ;D
