I am a freak. I have hands and I have feet,
and if you saw me you'd faint, you'd be petrified, mummified, turned
into stone or a pillar of salt.
Kate Mulgrew being tricked into endorsing geocentrism for a documentary is one of the weirder stories involving a Captain post-Star Trek but also you just have to be in awe of how well those weird Catholics structured their geocentrism propaganda movie. They got so many people onboard by only handing them one "normal" bit of the script and going yeah haha it's just a documentary about Galileo! Their strategy truly was foolproof as long as none of the famous people they were saying endorsed geocentrism saw a single headline about claiming they endorsed geocentrism, or looked into movies they worked on in any way
Which one was inside RFK Jr? Post your guess below!
90s Sci-Fi Worm Aliens, a Field Guide
Trill: largely harmless. Just want to share knowledge across lifetimes. Comes in ridged and spotted and, of course, worm. Strict taboo on resuming romantic relationships to ensure "new experiences" but resuming all of your past host's friendships and their job is fine I guess. Is there a secret 'good' group of worms? They are the secret good group of worms.
Goa'uld: not only possess people but have such a god complex about it. Rule like feudal lords over primitive planets that look like Canadian forests. Quick to point out they aren't actually "alien astronauts" bc they took their Egyptian aesthetic from the Egyptians, not vice versa. Is there a secret 'good' group of worms? Yes and they have an sci-fi apostrophe name too
Yeerks: technically slugs, but here in spirit. Possess people to take over the world (defined as a unnamed mid-sized city in Southern California). Allergic to oatmeal and being trapped by teenagers with a death wish until the lack of kadrona rays kills them. Is there a secret 'good' group of worms? Yes but they don't come up much
Decided to check out the topics Dr. Phil is covering now and
Fearmongering about college protests: expected
Fearmongering about trans youth and diversity: expected
Fearmongering about COVID and China "taking over": expected
TWO ENTIRE EPISODES ABOUT REEFER MADNESS???
It's not like his show wasn't conservative propaganda before, it was, or addicted to moral panics and misinformation, oh boy it was, but it was also at least a bit constrained by the commercial interests of a sleazy self-help show.
But that's not all: his streaming service has the Dirty Jobs knockoff show by Mike "paid Koch brother spokesman" Rowe. It has Nancy Grace. It has disgraced Bachelor host Chris Harrison. If you had a basic cable show ten years ago and got cancelled...then Dr. Phil has a place for you
The weirdest part, though, is learning that Dr. Phil the TV show only ended last November
Dr. Phil interviewed Benjamin Netanyahu in the most pathetic TV event of the year! Some stuff was probably said but every normal person presumably starts trying to escape about five minutes in (five is generous, if you locked me in a room where that was playing it would be like 30 seconds before I consider 127 Hoursing myself). So we're left with enticing mysteries, like: Dr. Phil is still on fucking TV?
My first guess was "oh he must have some kind of vanity streaming site where he's turned into a much more overt right-wing propagandist" and that was true bc literally what other option could there be. Of course that's what Dr. Phil is up to now bc that's what every disgraced TV personality is up to now
The funniest manifestation of the demand to Always Have A Take is when someone's take is not having a take. I once saw someone on Twitter who was complaining about how people were always scared of their dangerous ideas, and then looked at their feed, and it was just going "oh I don't give a shit about this" over and over. Compelled by dark spirits to have the opinion that you have no opinion on everything that has ever happened
The whole moment of this campaign cycle where Ron DeSantis tried to claim one of his Twitter Spaces was "the largest group that has ever met online" was unbelievable, but the truly entertaining part was all the DeSantis stans going "MISINFORMATION! FAKE NEWS! You claimed it was 100,000 people, but it was 700,000 when it crashed!!!" even though every higher number they cited was also extremely short of being The Most Popular Online Stream Ever. Love how none of them lied and claimed a million people watched leaving the strong implication that DeSantis supporters believe there's never been a livestream with a million viewers
The wildest part about Crypto/NFT/memestock people is that they try to apply the corporate fever dream of infinite growth to everything. They're obsessed with prices and will crow about high ones and also declare, every time, that they won't sell bc it'll clearly keep gaining value forever. Then it doesn't. Everything must be converted into a sellable asset you're forbidden to sell. It could hit a million dollars each and they'd still be cackling about how they'll never sell until it hits two million, and then won't everyone who sold be sad
still sometimes think about how when my apartment got raided by cops back in 2021 i had a massive neon sign on the wall of my living room that just said "crime"
If 30,000 Tumblr users can be tricked into opposing the large-scale adaptation of solar energy in order to save a minuscule number of trees which are not even remotely endangered, we’re absolutely not making it out of climate change. “We can’t provide 100% clean energy to tens of thousands of people because it might disturb a few plants/animals” is one of the fossil fuel industry’s go-to propaganda talking points. Next thing you know people on here are going to be repeating Trump’s bullshit about windmills killing ten quadrillion birds
Still wild that Elvis opens with a prominent cameo by Star Trek: The Experience. Colonel Tom Parker died having a hallucinatory dream fueled by regret over not getting to go on Borg Invasion 4D
