Zoei cursed from underneath her breath. Her fingers curled around the file she held, crumpling up the paper. She was frantic, quickly walking past the other marines as her rushed steps echoed throughout the narrow halls of the ship. Her report was due last week– Meaning that a week had passed and she didn’t deliver it, Akainu was going to kill her. Worse than that he was going to belittle her. Finally when she stood in front of the steel door she sighed, she felt her heartbeat in her throat.

Closing her eyes, Zoei knocked three times. A gruff “come in” called out to her from the other side of the door, gulping, Zoei turned the knob and took a step inside. Akainu had a stack of paper on his desk and he was looking down at them with distress. He momentarily lifted his glance to see who it was that had entered his chamber, when he saw only her, he lowered his gaze once more.

“I’m going to make a wild guess and assume you’re here to deliver your very late report?”

A choked sound left Zoei as she made her way towards the large desk, she stood right in front of him and placed the file gently on top of the papers he was examining. He sighed, looking blankly at the file.

“What am I supposed to do with a late report?”

“Read it?”

“Are you trying to be funny, soldier?”

Zoei froze at how the sentence rolled off of his tongue. She stood completely still, her arms stuck to her sides as she waited for him to continue. Akainu finally got up from his desk, walking around it, he stood only an inch away from Zoei. She was completely frozen as his lips twisted into a sly grin. Zoei knew that she was being tested. He leaned in closer, his smirk still prominent on his lips, the ship suddenly jumped but neither of them moved– Then the ship jumped a second time, higher than the one before. Momentarily Zoei felt her feet lift from the floor, losing all her balance, she stumbled. With the corner of her eyes she noticed that Akainu was struggling as well, the ship didn’t stop. Jerking them around until they were completely in the air and falling. Despite all of that, Akainu still managed to look in control– Meanwhile Zoei was flailing like a fish and before she could pinpoint where to land the ship flung her into Akainu’s broad chest.

Then gravity decided to pull them down against the floor, Zoei’s fall was softened thanks to Akainu but the latter wasn’t as lucky. He groaned as the solid floor hit his back, his arms automatically wrapped around Zoei’s waist, hugging her as the harsh waves of the sea started to settle.

Zoei blinked, her sight was still blurry as she tried to figure out why the impact hadn’t hurt as much as she expected. When her vision finally cleared she noticed why– Akainu was sprawled underneath her, his hands on her waist and his eyes scrunched as he attempted to get up. Suddenly she felt her heartbeat in her throat. Eyes going wide, she stared at him– all of her senses were heightened; the muscular body underneath her, the warmth seeping into her body… Zoei’s breath hitched. She was completely frozen, the only moving part of her body being her nostrils as she tried to steady her breathing.

Akainu slowly came to his senses, he was greeted with Zoei’s shell shocked gaze. He raised an eyebrow and curiously moved his fingers. As he moved his fingers a small gasp left Zoei’s lips, her back straightened as she placed her hands on his chest. She looked away, a light shade of pink dusted across her cheeks. Her blush deepened when she noticed Akainu’s lips curling up into a mischievous smirk.

“Are you okay?” he asked with the roll of his tongue.

Zoei still refused to look at him.

“Yeah,” she replied from underneath her breath. “Are you? Sir?”

Akainu’s grin grew at her hesitation and her lack of eye contact, he removed his hands from her waist and propped himself up with his elbows. He parted his lips but before he could say anything the door slammed open.

“Sir–!”

The poor marine soldier froze when two sets of eyes stared at him. Zoei could tell that he was new at the job, so seeing another soldier straddling the commanding officer must’ve come as a shock. He opened and closed his mouth like a fish, Zoei quickly scrambled up, adjusting her uniform as she looked at the ceiling. Akainu shot the officer an annoyed look but got up anyway, standing tall and intimidating.

“I don’t appreciate the way you barged into my office, soldier.”

“S-Sorry,” he stuttered. “It’s just– We spotted the Kid Pirates, sir.”

Zoei was surprised to see the triumphant glint in Akainu’s eyes, he smiled, a satisfactory hum rumbling in his chest.

“Good,” he replied, nodding. “Let’s go catch us some criminals.”

Without even knowing Zoei smiled at his enthusiasm, the awkward moment they shared now long forgotten.

Zoei crouched as a sword flew over her head, the blade cut through the air and the pirate stumbled forward since he wasn’t expecting her to dodge– Quite foolish on his part, honestly. She kicked him in the shin and chuckled as he fell into the wet sand, Zoei quickly grabbed his gun and started to aim at nearby pirates, her eyes especially scanning for their troublesome captain. While she was running cannonballs were fired and the island trembled, momentarily she lost her balance but quickly collected herself when she saw a head full of crimson red locks in the distance.

She saw the red head starting to run deeper into the forest, but he wasn’t just running for the sake of it. Someone was chasing him. Someone she quickly recognized as Akainu. Gun still in hand, Zoei knocked a couple more pirates out and trailed after them. The forest got ticker the deeper she went in, it was almost impossible for one to find their way– Meaning that they’re troops would’ve been useless inside of the forest. Soon enough Zoei also lost sight of the two and sighed with frustration. Zoei stopped in her tracks, taking in deeper breaths as she closed her eyes. She tried to hear them, canceling the noises of the birds, bugs and the nearby fight. Zoei solely focused on her breathing and the sounds that regularly came from Akainu; She remembered the way he breathed, the way he fought, the way his jacket made an annoying sound whenever he walked– Then she heard it, the grunt he made as he fought. Without a second thought Zoei dashed to her right, cutting through the branches and large bushes. It hurt but she didn’t care. She had to help Akainu, he was strong but so was Kid. They would have an easier time fighting together.

When Zoei finally managed to find them, she was shocked to see that Akainu was already pretty badly injured, the side of his face was covered with blood as Kid punched him to the ground. She vaguely noticed a lake and how the clear water became blurry with red. She ran towards them, pointing the gun she still miraculously had, directly at Kid’s head. The captain of the Kid Pirates was the first one to notice Zoei, Akainu’s eyes quickly followed, his eyebrows raised with an emotion that read both worry and relief. Kid’s red lips stretched out like the Cheshire Cat’s, it made Zoei’s stomach drop but she quickly shook it off.

Right before she pulled the trigger all she could see was darkness–

The first thing Zoei felt was the pain throbbing against her skull. She slowly got up, her knees scraping against the dirt as she stumbled forward. She barely was able to hold herself up right as she walked, her hands on each side of her temples as she tried to numb the pain. After the throbbing subsided a bit she patted her body down, searching for any other injuries but other than the blows she took to her head– at least she assumed someone hit her– she was completely fine.

Zoei walked towards the lake and a Kid’s mischievous grin flashed in her mind, she took in deep breaths as she tried to remember what had happened. She was searching for Akainu, she shook her head with an annoyed sigh leaving her lips, she… found him right? Yes. She did. Then where on earth was– Zoei leaned closer to the lake. The surface hadn’t cleared up yet, the surface that was stained…with blood. Akainu’s blood.

“Fuck,”

Panic swirled in her stomach and she leaped forward. The water was cold, making her legs numb as she walked deeper and deeper, until her feet didn’t touch the muddy soil anymore. The water irritated her eyes but she ignored it as she swam deeper, her muscles aching with the pressure. When Zoei was just about to lose breath, she saw an all too familiar white coat floating among the water. A beam of light broke through the water's surface as she swam closer, her lungs starting to burn from holding her breath for so long. But finally her search had bore fruit, Akainu was unconscious with his arms and legs floating gracefully as the water pulled him deeper. Zoei managed to grab him and wiggled her tired legs as she tried to reach above the surface.

Zoei gasped for air as soon as her head broke the water’s surface, her lungs rejoiced at the feeling of fresh oxygen. Her heart beated madly against her chest as she hugged Akainu closer, he still wasn’t breathing. Zoei dragged him to the shore, the small stones dug into her knees as she examined him. He had a small cut on his cheekbone and that was pretty much it when it came to open wounds. She quickly pulled up the sleeves of her hoodie and leaned in, without even thinking she pressed her lips against his and started to perform CPR.

She discarded all of her fears into the back of her mind, she only focused on the task at hand. Akainu sighed, droplets of water sliding down his face as he continued to talk.

“They have a devil fruit user that can make you go to sleep just like–” he snapped his fingers. “--That.”

The two of them stood in silence, not really knowing what to do in that particular moment. Zoei noticed the orange increasing in the sky, signaling that the sun had started to set, which would explain why her skin was bursting with goosebumps. It had definitely become colder. Before she could comment on the matter Akainu started to look around, he had a stern look on his face.

“We should find shelter for the night,” he said. “And return to the ship tomorrow.”

Zoei opened and closed her mouth before replying.

“Okay.”

As if he hadn’t just drowned, Akainu swiftly got up, once again towering over Zoei. He headed to his right and she followed without any objections. During the whole debacle she had forgotten that she was also dripping wet.
