Spain has got its first transgender senator
Carla Antonelli, the nation’s first openly transgender senator, has taken her oath to safeguard Spain’s progressive trans self-identification law, Transgenderfeed reports.
"We will defend our rights tooth and nail," Antonelli, 64, who took up her Senate seat on Thursday following Spain's inconclusive July parliamentary election, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation in a phone interview.
The law It lets trans people aged 14 and over change their legal gender without the need for psychological or other medical evaluation and judicial approval.
At least 14 countries have self-determination laws, like Finland, Malta, Norway, Germany, New Zealand and Argentina,
As an actress, Antonelli is known for her role as Gloria in the medical drama series El síndrome de Ulises (2007–2008). This marked the first time a transgender actor had a main role on a Spanish television series

Her murder was first labeled as a drowning when they retrived her from the Ohio River, but her car was discovered several blocks away from the Sherman Minton Bridge, with blood inside. When an autopsy was preformed, it was determined that she received several blows to the head before being tossed into the river, her killer was never found. She was only 34 years old.
