We’re so pleased with this review of Pyrolysis in the most recent issue of the Journal of Artists Books, JAB41. Thanks to reviewer Ian Kerstetter and editor Brad Freeman.
JAB41 has a number of other excellent book reviews and essays plus nine (!) other publications included, so don’t just read this online - get a copy, or better yet, a subscription to JAB.

Partial Press at the Unbound Book Festival
We had a blast at the 2017 Unbound Book Festival here in Columbia, MO! We teamed up with the Columbia Daily Tribune to bring our first LED (Literature Emitting Diodes) presentation to Columbia, and launch a new writing competition.
We also had copies of all our current publications for sale, and nearly sold out of Playing House!
It’s always a pleasure to introduce people to artists’ books, and to hear about other projects by likeminded writers, artists and publishers.
We can’t wait for next year’s festival!
Tumblr media
The festival was in Stephen’s College beautiful Kimball Ballroom.
Tumblr media
Jennifer McCauley’s poem, “A Good Song,” was entered into the LED display one letter at a time.

Now Available: The LED Anthology
The Literature Emitting Diodes Anthology is finally available, so we thought we'd share some more details about the book.
Each of the twelve pieces are set alongside photo documentation of their installation. At 5.5 x 8.5 inches, the book is large enough to showcase these color photographs and give the reader a sense of context. The pieces are organized in chronological order, from July to June, and are listed by month in the table of contents. Across the gutter from the table of contents is a corresponding map with each installation indicated by number. Without the standard list of authors, titles and page numbers, the reader must do a bit of exploration – a nod to the project's sense of serendipitous discovery.

Each aspect of Literature Emitting Diodes has certain strengths and limitations. The installations packed the potential to reach an unexpected audience and inspire a re-imagination of the visual landscape. The website is a great platform to record photographs and other documentation and share with a global audience. This book is the form most suited to presenting the texts as they were originally written. Of course, much of our interest in this project was the visual format of the LED display as a medium for writing, but it is undeniable that it prioritizes the temporal over the spacial. The printed codex is ideal for typesetting each piece as it was originally submitted to us by the author, with the understanding that the layout of the printed page is integral to poetry, and important for any text. We also feel that the printed book lends the project a certain durability and, through libraries, book stores and readers, a very fitting ability to travel to unforeseen places.
Tumblr media
With these advantages, we designed the anthology to stand on its own as a printed book that is enjoyable to read. We did not attempt to recreate the experience of our LED installations, nor mimic the function of the project’s website and online archive. We did, however, make a few nods to the LED format through the design. Most notably, the covers serve as a sort of bridge between the aesthetics of the LED display and those of the interior pages. It felt appropriate, given the advertising origins of the display, to boldly run a continuous stream of authors, titles, and locations across the surface of the book. The cover gave us an opportunity for a bit of play, so we could preserve the readability of a more conventional design within.
The LED Anthology was printed by Bookmobile, a Minneapolis-based short run digital print operation specializing in art books. We were pretty impressed by the quality of the printing, and especially with the service and support provided by Bookmobile. After this project, we'd recommend them to other artists and independent publishers, and we'd be happy to field any questions about our process.
Copies are available on our website for only $6.00!
For those interested in the book's technical minutiae: This first printing was an edition of 200 copies. The book has 40 pages, with 14 in full color and is printed on 60# Boise offset paper. The cover is 10pt card stock with gloss lamination on the outside. The book is perfect bound.
Thanks, once again, to the Chicago Awesome Foundation for funding this book.

Pyrolysis at the CBAA Member Exhibition
Pyrolysis has been selected for the 2017 Members Exhibition at the College Book Art Association Annual Meeting in Tallahassee, FL. The exhibition isn’t until January, but we’re already excited about this year’s theme – “Conspire: Collaboration, Cooperation and Collections” – a fitting framework for Pyrolysis, which was collaborative from research and planning to writing and design and finally printing and binding.
The exhibition was juried by Katie McCormick, Associate Dean for Special Collections and Archives, FSU, and Eileen Wallace, Lecturer, Printmaking and Book Arts, Lamar Dodd School of Art. The works will be on display throughout the meeting and beyond, from January 13 to February 10 at the Museum of Fine Arts FSU.
We’re so happy to be among the 55 pieces that were selected, and we hope to see more exhibitions focusing on collaboration and cooperation in the future!

Partial Press at the Resident Arts Holiday Market
We’ll have a table set up this Friday, Nov. 4th, at Resident Arts. We’ll have special deals on Partial Press publications Playing House and Pyrolysis (that’s a mouthful) and we’ll still be taking pre-orders for the LED Anthology. We’ll also be selling artists’ books, zines and prints by Partial Press co-founder Levi Sherman.
The Holiday Sale is part of Columbia’s First Friday in the North Village Arts District, so make sure to stop by while you’re perusing the art and sampling the snacks. We’ll be there from 6-9pm, which is also during the reception for the first Resident Arts Members Exhibit. Resident Arts is tucked away in the alley between Orr St. and 10th St, at 1023 E. Walnut #3.

We’re happy to announce that Pyrolysis is now available for sale through Printed Matter in NYC. We are honored to be featured among so many amazing works, and to play our tiny part in the history of artists’ books.
You can also purchase Pyrolysis through our website, here, and through Levi’s website, but we’d still recommend taking a nice long look through Printed Matter’s catalog!
