What is the character’s go-to drink order?

Masaru doesn't tend to drink much alcohol in general, purely because he's not really one to visit bars and so forth in the first place, and doesn't care much for being drunk. At a restaurant however, he'll usually order black coffee if it's on offer, or a diet coke if it isn't.

3. What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go?

In all honesty, he's not much of a spender! He's been living out of his car and motels for most of his life, so he's used to not buying many personal possessions with nowhere to keep them - and expensive things like his car or phone are supplied by his work. The most he actually spends money on would be food! Eating good food is important to him and something he's willing to indulge on, especially if it's something he can share too.

6. Are they an oldest, middle, youngest or only child?

He's the youngest of three. There was one older brother, and Masaru's twin brother, Takuya. Older by juuuuust a few minutes, but any twin will always claim those few minutes count.

So my problem with most ‘get to know your character’ questioneers is that they’re full of questions that just aren’t that important (what color eyes do they have) too hard to answer right away (what is their greatest fear) or are just impossible to answer (what is their favorite movie.)  Like no one has one single favorite movie. And even if they do the answer changes.

If I’m doing this exercise, I want 7-10 questions to get the character feeling real in my head. So I thought I’d share the ones that get me (and my students) good results: 

What is the character’s go-to drink order? (this one gets into how do they like to be publicly perceived, because there is always some level of theatricality to ordering drinks at a bar/resturant)

What is their grooming routine? (how do they treat themselves in private)

What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go? (Gets you thinking about socio-economic class, values, and how they spend their leisure time)

Do they have any scars or tattoos? (good way to get into literal backstory) 

What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances? (Good way to get some *emotional* backstory in.) 

Are they an oldest, middle, youngest or only child? (This one might be a me thing, because I LOVE writing/reading about family dynamics, but knowing what kinds of things were ‘normal’ for them growing up is important.)

Describe the shoes they’re wearing. (This is a big catch all, gets into money, taste, practicality, level of wear, level of repair, literally what kind of shoes they require to live their life.)

Describe the place where they sleep. (ie what does their safe space look like. How much (or how little) care / decoration / personal touch goes into it.)

What is their favorite holiday? (How do they relate to their culture/outside world. Also fun is least favorite holiday.) 

What objects do they always carry around with them? (What do they need for their normal, day-to-day routine? What does ‘normal’ even look like for them.)

I am especially proud of this one because I think I pulled it off really smartly. Masaru's whole thing is he's anyone except himself, so it makes sense all of his boxes are about someone else he knows!

More doodles, this time for the Apprentice's mentor! Pheles! He's a mysterious wizard, he's a huge asshole, and he's an expert on ancient and 'forgotten' magic. Which is truly the primary reason his apprentice even sticks around.

my issue is that again i dont trust a site as deeply incompetent as tumblr, or a company as deeply insidious and built off of unlawful theft as midjourney. i can toggle it off, but does that guarantee anything? it really doesnt when these are our players. so for now my stance remains.

considering how much the userbase hates ai, and how incompetent the team is, iiiiiii. am not gonna delete just yet. im holding out hope that somehow they step back out of their partnership. but until that happens, i'm gonna be on hiatus from posting. im not sharing anything with these assholes, these ai companies are built on illegal theft and they're not gonna stop just bc i clicked a little toggle.

i considered offering kofi as an option to keep seeing my art and writing to support me as well (for super cheap to its still very accessible) but i dont think i have enough followers for that. if u feel otherwise, feel free to speak up bc its rlly rlly important rn
