The thing that makes the death of Tonks and Remus even sadder is the fact that they maybe didn't see each other before they died.
The readers didn't get to know if Tonks found Remus at all.
So imagine if she didn't, Remus' final moments would be thinking how his wife and child are at home and are safe.
But then, there was a chance Tonks died before she got to Remus so her final moments would be thinking how her husband would survive and take care of Teddy.
And if those scenarios didn't happen,
one had to watch the other die.

*at the Lupin's*
Bill: Where's Tonks?
Remus: In the kitchen. She wanted to make us some tea.
Bill: You think that's a good idea?
Remus: I believe she's old enough to make some tea -
Tonks: Remus! There's smoke coming out of the kettle!
Remus: That's the steam, sweetheart.
Tonks: No, like black smoke!
Remus:
Bill:
