Hey do yall remember those things that (at least american) elementary schools do where they have every student memorize a poem and perform it in front of all of the parents? Yeah anyway you know what kids usually do for that right? Fire and Ice by Jack Frost, a silly little Shel Silverstein poem, basically just a cute little poem that takes maybe thirty seconds to recite at most.

So I need you to imagine that you're my mom, and your child comes home from school and tells you about this project, and when you ask if they want to pick out a poem, it goes (roughly) like this:

"I already have."

"Oh- Okay, what is it?"

"The Night Before Christmas by Clement Clarke Moore."

"Oh, honey, that's not a poem, that's a book, I don't think that you're gonna be able to memorize it in time."

"But I already did."

"What do you mean you already did? I thought you just found out about it today?"

"Yeah, I did, so I stayed in from recess and sat in the corner and memorized it."

And you bet your ass I made a gymnasium full of adults sit there for 10 minutes while I recited the ENTIRETY of The Night Before Christmas, which I did not realize was strange until high school, when my english teacher pointed out in the kindest way possible that what I was recounting to her was NOT NORMAL.

Holy moly, the eight generation of Loudclan was… it was something all right.

(I know this looks like a disaster, don’t worry I’ll explain.)

For context, Loudclan is a dynasty challenge meaning the leadership position must pass from relative to relative. Scorchstar inherited the leadership from his mother, Birchstar, the leader before him. (If you’re interested in past generations go check out my profile there’s a post for each of them as well as some extra doodles)

So: Scorchstar becomes leader at 63 moons old. His mates Mountaintuft and Shinedawn soon had their first litter of Goldkit, Fogkit, Sapkit, and Lightningkit, followed quickly by Scorchstar and Mountaintuft’s only litter of Shadowkit, Wormkit, and Stormkit. With heirs to spare, they decided that there was no reason for Mountaintuft to have another litter, as she had struggled with the last one. That was, at least, until the worst happened.

ALL OF SCORCHSTAR’S BIOLOGICAL KITS DIED WITHOUT HAVING ANY KITS OF THEIR OWN.

Now come on, you might be thinking, that’s not a big deal, he still has his adopted kits, and you would be somewhat right, except for the fact that the precedent upon the ending of a bloodline has always been to trace back to the eldest living descendant of the 1st cat to hold that position, which in this case would be Whiskerbillow, the grandson of Birchstar and nephew to Scorchstar. But wait, Shinedawn is also descended from a leader, and since his kits are the adopted children of the current leader, that means that they get are preferred when if comes to inheritance. So there it is, since Goldjump has inherited the position of Healer from her mother, Fogfur, the only remaining kit, will be the deputy and heir…

BUT WAIT— NOW HE’S DEAD TOO!

That’s fine, though, he has an heir, in fact, he has two! Owlpaw, who is 8 moons old, and Mottlekit, who hasn’t even been born at the time of his death. Hmm, well that’s gonna be a problem. Only an adult cat who has earned their warrior name can serve as deputy and heir, no matter what their mother Eagledart tries to argue about her lineage validating their claim. Perhaps there’s an older cat in the clan we can turn to who looks suspiciously like the late deputy…

Well would you look at that, how lucky it is that Lightstorm just so happens to confirm that her son Highshade’s father is in fact Fogfur, the former deputy, right when Scorchstar is looking for an heir? What a coincidence! Let’s just all, as a group, forget that he had definitely already had a kit with Eagledart at that point, I’m sure that she’s forgotten, and definitely will not suffer a minor mental break resulting in her coupling up with Whiskerbillow, the true, blood heir. That’s good though, right? Now the matter can be settled, Highshade’s mate Dogfur is expecting a litter that can serve as heirs, and all is well so long as Scorchstar (159 moons old and not doing well) dies before Owlpaw grows up.

…I SAID, SO LONG AS SCORCHSTAR DIES BEFORE OWLPAW GROWS— up...

No, no, that’s fine, cause now Shimmereye is 12 moons old too, which means that he can serve as deputy, and if Scorchstar has lived this long then he might as well stick around for— oh...

…Scorchstar died of old age at 163 moons old. Shimmereye, the youngest son of Shinedawn, Mountaintuft, and Scorchstar became the 10th leader of Loudclan at only 13 moons old. He appointed Owlspeck, only 14 moons old, as his deputy and heir, momentarily satiating Eagledart, but leaving Highshade and his family with nothing…

That is, at least, until 21 moons later, when he happened to fall for a certain young medicine cat, who just so happens to be the daughter of Lightstorm and her mate Seedshock, who has an even better pedigree than Eagledart… But of course Lightstorm wouldn’t encourage her daughter to become mates with the leader and have kits as soon as possible just because she felt her older son had been slighted… right? She and Eagledart have moved on since Shimmerstar inherited, it’s not like they both took mates and had kits with cats higher up in the line of succession, who might inherit if something were to happen to Shimmerstar, Owlspeck, and their families…

So… That was the 8th generation. We’re at 713 moons, and Shimmerstar and Snailtooth named their son Mothkit after Scorchstar, whose warrior name was Scorchmoth.

Happy Halloween from the Sad Boi Crew!

In the spirit of the season, they have both a treat…

…and a trick! 🥲

In the span of a few moons:

-Scorchstar’s son Stormfeather and granddaughter Wolfshade fell through the ice and drowned at 59 moons old and 29 moons old respectively.

-Scorchstar’s granddaughter Rockkit died of kitten cough at 6 moons old.

-Scorchstar’s mate Mountaintuft was buried alive in an avalanche at 159 moons old.

-Scorchstar’s son Shadowfade was found dead near the Spottedclan border at 73 moons old.

-Scorchstar’s granddaughter Squirrelriver died from complications with giving birth at 48 moons old.

-Scorchstar’s mate Shinedawn faded away slowly until he was found dead in his nest 157 moons old.

-Scorchstar’s sister Rippleshiver died of yellow cough at 101 moons old.

-Scorchstar’s grandughter Peakeagle died saving Squirrelriver’s kits from a snake at 44 moons old.

-Scorchstar’s grandson Bluepaw died of yellow cough at 12 moons old.

…So yeah, his family is not having a great time.

Shimmerkit is named after Shinedawn’s late sister and Scorchstar’s childhood friend (hence her ghost hanging out with them). Fogfur and Eagledart ended up taking him in after Mountaintuft and Shinedawn’s deaths as Scorchstar was in no state to take care of a kit. He’s best friends with Fogfur and Eagledart’s son Owlpaw. Highshade’s chilling in the background because even though literally everyone in the clan knows that Fogfur is his father it’s still not like “official” yet… Plus Eagledart is pretty close to absolutely losing her mind and probably doesn’t need to be pushed any farther.

I don’t think I’ve really mentioned it yet but alongside the leader lineage challenge I’m running I’ve also been doing the same with the medicine cat and mediator positions, so Mountaintuft and Lupineclover both inherited their positions from their parents and will pass them on to their kits, while Shinedawn and Flutterwhisker chose to train as medicine cats and won’t pass their positions on to anyone.

-Scorchstar somewhat unwillingly inherited the leadership from his mother, Birchstar, when she died of old age. He has two viable heirs, Shadowfade, the current deputy, his other biological son Stormfeather. He is mates with Mountaintuft and Shinedawn.

-Shadowfade stands to inherit the leadership from his father Scorchstar, but has no heirs of his own so far. His mate Larkheart died from a snake bite and he hasn’t chosen another yet.

-Mountaintuft inherited her position as Lead Healer from her father Coldtuft. She has 4 viable heirs, her 1st litter of Goldjump and Fogfur, as well as her second litter of Shadowfade and Stormfeather. She is mates with Scorchstar and Shinedawn.

-Shinedawn chose to train as a medicine cat after his sister Shimmerkit died of kitten cough at 4 moons old. He is mates with Scorchstar and Mountaintuft.

-Flutterwhisker decided to train as a medicine cat because as the youngest of 21 kits, how else was she supposed to get any attention? She is currently mates with a she-cat named Rhymequill, with whom she has several adopted kits.

-Lupineclover inherited the position of mediator from his mother, Seedshock, only a few moons ago. He had a mate, Fishhawk, and an heir, Brambleshade, but they both died shortly before him becoming mediator, leaving him without an heir. He and his new mate Breezefreckle, however, are hoping to soon remedy this.

WARNING: SPOILERS FOR @loudclan-clangen

Welcome to the 7th generation of Loudclan, and along with it some improvement in my ability to draw cats! Loudclan is a legacy challenge, meaning the position of leader can only be inherited by a close relative of the last leader.

After inheriting the clan from her sister, Birchstar stared out her leadership by having Nightseeker in a secret affair with Pebblespot. Whether or not her lifelong mate Ferntumble knew, he never let on, as he was a loving and deeply involved parent for his adopted son. Pebblespot couldn’t stand to be sat on the sidelines, however, and after 13 moons of watching Nightseeker spend time with Ferntumble instead of him, he finally snapped, murdering Ferntumble and leaving him to be found on the Tulipclan Border. He managed to escape all of the suspicions of the clan, except for one. His son, Nightseeker, noticed the specks of blood speckling his paws as he attempted to comfort the young, grieving tom. The next moon, at only 14 moons old, Nightseeker used a rogue attack as cover to drag Pebblespot away, killing him in vengeance for his adopted father.

Birchstar always suspected that her son had a part to play in Pebblespot’s demise, and as she had no idea that he had killed her former mate, it caused a divide between them. She could never abandon her son, especially as he was her only heir, but she could never really forgive him either. The birth of her second litter only deepened their separation, with Birchstar telling them to be wary of their older brother. Her fear was unwarranted, however, as Nightseeker died pushing his sister Sparkpaw out of the way of a monster.

Birchstar continued to have litters into her old age, and though her first two relationships ended in tragedy, she had a long and happy life with Darkstem, only losing two kits while she was alive, Bigtooth and Smokekit. Opposed to what her appearance would have you believe, the majority of her leadership was peaceful and uneventful, ending when she died in her sleep at 158 moons old.

As her chosen heir, Scorchmoth took up the mantle of leadership at 63 moons old, even though it was against his anxious nature, making him Loudclan’s 9th leader, and the 1st male to lead since the founder, Owlstar.

They’re doing great! Their warrior names are Lightningswan, Fogfur, and Goldjump! They all take after their dads, meaning they are very pretty and very stupid, much to their mother Mountaintuft’s delight. Each of them, however, fully believes that they are the smart one, and that the other two are idiots. In other news, Lightningswan somehow managed to adopt a litter of kittens at 12 moons old, the literal day that he became a warrior.

Don’t worry, the Sad Boi Crew love their grandkits, they were just a little… surprised, is all.
