What are your thoughts on Nate in Euphoria?

I think the things he does are terrible. Awful. And I know he will see justice in the following season, and I will be happy to see it, as well as see some of the other characters affected by him finally be free of the extreme negativity he brings to their lives. But I’m legitimately ten standing steps back from everyone who takes the time to write paragraph-long essays or make 10+ posts an episode about why they want to waterboard and murder the fictional character that is Nate Jacobs. And to be honest, I’m kind of disappointed that so many people are that shallow. Watching Euphoria, I genuinely viewed the on-screen ‘Nate’ either as Jacob Elordi being and proving himself as the second-most talented person in the production (first going to Zendaya), or the most complex character I have ever seen in a show created for teenagers, and usually, both at the same time. Those stances to look in from were marvelous and fascinating to me. I was in awe whenever he was on screen because I was excited to see what Jacob would do next. Don’t get me wrong, the character’s actions are atrocious, but he was fascinating. No other male character on the show has that kind of intrigue that makes you want to know just how he ticks, because let’s be real, we have already seen all the other male characters before in another show or movie. McKay, Ethan, Fez, Daniel, Tyler— while they are all portrayed at an exceptional level, they are ordinary. You can give each of them a singluar label. The failing athelete, the nice boy, the kind-hearted drug dealer, the asshole, the college student, etc… I can’t recall seeing a character exactly like Nate before, and I can’t seem to be able to summarize him up into one label because he has contrasting sides to him that defer one another. And that’s the aspect of realism I appreciated. The originality and the enigma that mirrors human beings themselves. Real people, in real life, after all, aren’t transparent. They don’t have clear motives all the time, and they aren’t flat. They are complicated, they make poor decisions, they act on emotion, even fully succumb to it, and they are not minimized to one note or theme. As someone who admires the craft of character-building and film, I enjoyed watching Jacob bring him to life and to see a character in main-stream television, finally, to be written in a way where we were left with more questions about them than answers. 

To sum it up: I think he has been terrible, obviously, but the fact is he is a kaleidoscope, as well as one of the best-acted and most puzzlingly written characters on the show. In that sense I think he is valuable, and I would very much like to get to know him down to the bone………… And THEN, you know, watch him get carted off in handcuffs.
