In all these struggles, all these debates, and all these things tearing us apart – I have a side. That’s right. I have opinions. Strongly held beliefs, even. 

And here’s the thing – the more I saw the people I believed I was standing up for being walked on – the more I heard a noise machine spouting intolerance and fear, drowning common sense out – the more I wondered – shouldn’t Captain America be more than just a symbol? 

Steve always tried to stay above the fray, and I respected him for it. He took a stand when he had to, but as far as politics went – he played it close to the vest.

But if I really believed I could make a difference – if I really believed I could change some minds, do some good – then wasn’t I obligated to try?

“if you think i’m telling you anything, you’re kidding yourselves. hydra lives while none other survives.” 

sam rolls his eyes. they always make them rip it out of them the hard way. like they think being a part of a hydra base gives them the invulnerability against bucky’s fist. 

with the exhaustion of a man already fucking done with it, sam leans back against the wall of the interrogation room. watches as bucky stalks forward from the door, places both hands on the table. 

and if that little shudder that the hydra shithead gives doesn’t give sam a thrill. 

“you know my partner’s the nice one,” bucky hisses. “i’m not so kind. i also hold grudges. so give us the fucking coordinates, or my hand’ll rearrange your face.” 

now, normally, this is when sam would step in. say a line about how he can calm bucky down for the right price. your life for the intel, that kind of thing. but now, all sam can think about is the word partner coming out of bucky’s mouth. he wonders a little bit how it tastes. 

wants to try it out himself. 

(wants to lick it out of his mouth.)

“partner,” sam laughs, despite himself. despite the situation. he decides he likes it, but he can’t let bucky know that. that’d be too easy. “okay, you gay bitch.” 

the wall is boring, so sam steps forward. hand slapping on bucky’s shoulder. he doesn’t need to look down to see the sharp curve of his partner’s grin, nor the clench of his hands against the table.

“look, guy. there’re two options. you tell us, or you don’t. one gets you knocked out faster, and trust me, you’ll want to get knocked out.” 

of course, the guy doesn’t listen. says something about hydra again and at that point sam and bucky are both bored with him. 

“gay bitch?” bucky asks, when the day’s done, the room left behind them. 

“you’re telling me i’m wrong?” 

(sam pays for it a little bit later. feels bucky bite at his neck, after pinning him to the bed. 

“you just can’t keep your mouth shut,” he mouths along sam’s collarbone. it makes sam gasp, when combined with calloused fingers skidding across skin. 

“and you fucking love it, partner.)
