whenever i watch invader zim i can't help but feel like the last few episodes (like, season 2) that aren't related to the inklings of the developing plot falls off a bit. some of the plots get a little less interesting but i think my main problem is that it just gets way too hyper.

the most obvious example is the way i start getting annoyed by the characters' voice acting as much as they're praised as one of the show's highlights. like, ZIM gets way too obnoxiously theatrical every line (the christmas episode was the worst with this. who told horvitz to inflect in some of the ways he did there...) I liked the early episodes having moments where his voice would get deeper or even slightly ominous but i think they started exaggerating his screaming and voice warbling even more for the goofy factor. And then the later episodes also have moments where Dib just starts squealing and making random high-pitched noises... shit hurts my ears, man...

i think it also starts going off of the GIR-style random humor a little too much for my taste. reading the unfinished episode scripts, though they are just scripts of course, i didn't find most of them to be very funny (some of them were straight up bad lol... simon says doom and return of keef were painful to read through. i also have issues with characterization in stuff like mopiness of doom but that's another thing.)

#invader zim #rambles #hard to articulate why i don't like them as much as the early episodes but i think this is the reason #the early episodes just have such an intense appeal to me i can't quite describe #i also always wished the series had more moments like the eye scene in bestest friend and dark harvest #where the comedy and goofiness just drops for a moment to have a mock horror scene #don't need to have it too much. but i wish it didn't stop after the first few episodes #IZ doesn't get less dark in terms of content in the later episodes but i think it does get less heavy in terms of tone

Though Diavolo is obviously my main guy, I got fixated on Jojo before I ever saw Vento Aureo. It's a very very interesting series to see evolve throughout the decades while keeping some consistent main themes- for better or worse, there is a lot you can pick apart about it. It's so interesting a lot of people reduce it to just a "funny meme fighting show" because deeper topics are always present beyond (and intertwined with) the fighting and goofy outfits.

It (particularly Diavolo) is the thing that felt like it was bursting out of my head enough to motivate me into making a blog in the first place, so I kind of owe it in that way. I also think actually writing my thoughts out for the first time improved my media analysis and comprehension abilities a lot, even if it's just analyzing/complaining about a popular Shonen series on Tumblr. It has changed a lot about the way I look at media, I think.

#rbs #polls #on occasion #when i rewatched the first few episodes of invader zim i pulled an all nighter pacing and physically shaking with excitement #and then the next few nights afterward #completely decimated my sleep schedule #very embarrassing that show of all things does that to me #that's also happened with a couple other things #like diavolo and doppio when i first watched VA #also if social consequences like ''people think it's weird and off putting that i talk about the same thing over and over'' counts #i don't have a problem with completing schoolwork or anything though because i would feel so guilty if i didn't #when i get in those moods what helps is just inserting my fixation while i work #''zim also goes to school i wonder how he would feel about this assignment'' #it's stupid but it works #zim probably doesn't do his homework though.

Since I still get (well-intentioned) people telling me "Hey, did you know that you can teach apes to use sign language?", if you don't know already, Koko the gorilla almost certainly couldn't really talk with signing, the videos of her doing so have high evidence of doctoring and behind-the-scenes coaching, the majority of animals in the whole ape language project were abused (including Koko herself), and the studies were butchered and manipulated for media attention. As for now, there is no real evidence that apes can understand and use language much more than a dog can learn to connect symbols and noises with meanings, for example.

Finished Jojolion in four days... That's not much compared to my previous record of doing Stone Ocean over one night, but still! I was in such a Jojo mood and state of mind thanks to Steel Ball Run, I was able to get into that necessary mindset to blitz it out of need.

If there's a one true complaint about Jojolion... It's how criminally underused Kei Nijimura is. You're telling me she's Yoshikage Kira's sister, basically Josuke's sister, and nothing was done with this??? And she's known this since he showed up, no less!

Like, how does Josuke feel about that? Is he not gonna inquire with her about what Kira was like, in order to get a better sense of who half of him was? And maybe a clue as to what Kira was up to before he died? She doesn't have memory issues like Holly, that's a pretty huge lead to work off, especially with Yasuho's Paisley Park. And Josuke basically adopted Holly as a mother figure... Obviously also because of what she did for Josefumi, but that's still a big connection there!

And how does Kei feel? That's her brother, he's died, and she's losing her mom soon. That's half of her family... Half of half of her family, in Josuke. Does she mourn Kira? Wonder if any of his memories are still alive in Josuke, if he's technically still Kira? Did she not know about Kira's relationship with Josefumi? If she doesn't consider Josuke her brother, at least address that she doesn't.

It's weird because she's the AU counterpart to Okuyasu, just as Yasuho is to Koichi... So you'd think Kei would have a huge amount of prominence as a Jobro (Or Josis), but after her stand battle she basically disappears as an unacknowledged background character, only to suddenly come back and be killed by Wonder of U. It was a sacrifice that led to victory of course, but c'mon... With how the Wonder of U arc had been going up until that point, I was wondering if Kei's absence was just gonna be unaddressed.

When Kira blew out that motorcycle tire during the Locacaca branch heist, I wondered for a moment if that was actually Kei's Born This Way masquerading as a regular driver... Alas, no. If only Araki did more with Kei, gave some emotional interactions afterwards; Like Josuke AND Kei visiting their mutual mother together.

Given Holly is her mom too, you'd think she'd also be super motivated to attain the Locacaca fruit, so she could've turned the iconic duo of Jojolion into an iconic trio. Even if Kei wasn't a major protagonist due to Born This Way seeming lacking in utility for stand battles, just exploring that familial bond more throughout the part would've made her death feel so much more impactful.
