“How could you?”

Michael’s stomach somersaulted viciously at Father’s tone. He’d expected Father to scream until his ears rang but this low hiss was venomous as a snake. Worse, Michael had no defense. No excuse, no worthy explanation.

It was just a prank. Evan was supposed to run away, cry it off. Now he was a mess of gauze, tubes and wires in the other room while Michael stood on shaking legs in William’s long shadow.

Correction: while Michael reeled sideways, stars bursting through his vision from the force of Father’s blow. No sooner had he caught himself on the wall did Father snag a stinging fistful of his hair, wrenching him in nose-to-nose.

“If your brother dies,” he snarled, “I will never forgive you. Never.”

Bile surged to close Michael’s throat; all he could do was nod. For once they were in agreement. He would never forgive himself either.

Her little body was torn open, rivers of blood dripping into glistening pools on the table. Zlatko was humming as he worked, elbow deep in Alice’s stomach and Kara could only watch, blank and numb, useless, soulless, too late—

Luther’s hand on her back made her jump ever so slightly but she couldn’t bear to pull away. Breaths shuddering through cold, constricted vents, she pressed her face into his chest, trying to smother away the grisly mental image as his soothing voice rumbled through her.

“It was just a dream. You were stronger than he could have imagined and you found yourself again. You found her. She’s safe, Kara; you both are. He’s never going to hurt you again.”

I had this idea that’s been stewing in my head for a long while now that I’ve slowly been trying to draw out. I can’t really explain it, I was thinking about future events after the summer when the show ended and what could be a continuation of sorts.
