I watched Robot Dreams yesterday evening! I went in completely blind. I think the most I had seen of it was a GIF set here on tumblr of the reprise dancing scene (and only a bit); long story short, our group of 4 people gasped LOUDLY at that one part where Robot goes to get some Ketchup. It was so loud and also funny that the entire room joined us in our little gay gasp and (heartbroken, nervous) giggle. As we made our way out after the movie ended, we noticed a guy sobbing and his girlfriend consoling him... I'm sorry this message seems to be all over the place, but I am just so moved by this amazing piece of art you helped bring to life; I had never had a strong reaction to a film like I did yesterday. It made me feel... alive? In a way. It made me look forward to watching more films with my friends. So thank you a million times to y'all <3 I hope you have a wonderful day on your side of the world.
P.s.: we met this little guy outside the movie theatre yesterday!

Man TTTTwTTTT

Aaaaaaa I worked on that shot TwT I remember us sitting at the Director's little office talking about this moment where Robot and Rascal see and notice each other, a little Easter egg for the keenest eyes, as well as the way Rascal climbed the stairs, hanging on to the handrail because he's an older guy, and the Robot turned his head 360 degrees because he's a robot.
Spoilers: Do you think Rascal recognized Robot when he saw his head at the junkyard?
Love the way you drew and colored them here sm <3
Love at first sight. 🪼🌺🌸

Don't you notice how 🍓
I get quiet when there's no one else around 💫
Me and you and awkward silence ❤️‍🩹
Don't you dare look at me that way 🌺
I don't need reminders of how you don't feel the same 🏵️

Why do you say robot dreams is not for kids?
What I meant was that it's not necessarily a kids film. It wasn't written FOR kids. Kids can watch it, lots of kids have in fact already watched it and they loved it, and could totally pick up on stuff. But the core of the story, the message behind it, is for the people who already know what it's like to have loved and lost.

Well, we didn't win the Oscar! But you know, the competition this year was absolutely fierce. And just the fact that Robot Dreams was at the Oscars is wild and I will be forever proud of our little champion baby TwT
So the birds were the first sequence that we started animating, closely followed by the rabbits. I was in charge of three fourths of the sequence, together with my colleage Adèle, who did the remaining fourth. I remember how excited the guys in the director's room were to see the first ever animated shot (the one where momma bird lands and pecks at Robot's feet).
A lot of us at the studio will remember having doubts when it came to the Blackbird sequence, being one of the least favorite among the team at the time. But that quickly changed, and now it appears to be one of the most memorable according to the public. <3

Hihi I was wondering what dog and robots relationship was? I get that there were obviously friends, but some of the scenes were?? I'm asking is it up for interpretation or wat. I wanna know what someone that worked at the studio thinks atleast. Cuz I get that friends can hold hands and stuff but. ALSO that one song titled jealous dream, that scene always gets me sad . I've watched the movie like 10 times already
You’ve watched almost as many times as I have haha!
And yeah, I believe it’s pretty much up to interpretation, which is why I personally don’t like the French title “Mon ami Robot” which eliminates that nuance. Even at the studio, we couldn’t agree. And we don’t have to. I think the beauty of it being ambiguous is that you can extrapolate to whatever your personal experiences are, and who in your life these characters make you think about. Some people do see it as platonic, some see it romantic, or something else (overthinking can lead to weird conclusions XD).
Sara Varon, writer of the original comic, said she had put down her dog recently, and there was a bit of that in the story as well. But then ace people happen to see themselves a lot in their dynamic (including me^^). Not even Pablo Berger, the scriptwriter and director, specified what he was going for, if anything.
Dog and Robot to me have been several things, but they’ve always been the people that have made an impact in my life^^

I just came back from the movies and oh my god this was so moving 😭 you deserve all the praise, congrats!!!!
I have two questions, one, WHY DID YOU MAKE ME BAWL and two, how did you guys did the flowers musical number? It was amazing to watch on the big screen
Again thank you for making such a lovely film, you can feel the love you all poured into it
I, of course, am only slightly responsible for making you bawl as it was very much a team effort ^w^ But thank you so much!
As for the flower scene! My, that one was a doozy. For most of production most of us were very uncertain as to how we were going to pull it off, and if it would even be interesting for people. I didn't get to work on the flowers at all myself, so all I can say is they pretty much animated a few flowers referencing real life tap dancing, then duplicated them a few docen times to make the army of tap-dancing flowers with digital magic.

After all these years, Klepto still going strong!
Casey: Wow! Great work Donnie!
Donnie: You don’t have to sound so surprised, Casey.
Casey: Oh, I’m not surprised- I’m awestruck! Awestruck!
Donnie: Well, don’t be. That’s an order.
Casey: …you’re ordering me not to be awestruck?
Donnie: That’s right. Stand over there and don’t be awestruck.

Robot Dreams - Roller skate sequence animation
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love that canonnically Dog is good at nothing... except for roller-skating.
So I was in charge of Layout, Rough, Tie-down and sometimes Clean-up for a good part of the September sequence. The ones in b&w are clean-ups. The ones in color I only animated and someone else cleaned, I just didn't keep my version of those for some reason. I drew so many tiny wheels guys TvT So many...
I also worked on the reprise, right at the end, having to reinterpret the same dance moves without the skates.
The director Pablo Berger made a trip to film a couple of Roller Skate dancers, and that's what I had as reference for the whole dance sequence. I believe they're both in the credits!

Where can I watch the Robot Dreams film by the way? If it's not silly to ask :p
It's not silly at all! I'm just not the best person to ask because I'm just a lowly animator and I'm not told this stuff XD
Best I can tell you is: it depends on where you live, because it's already been released in Spain, France and other countries, and has NOT been released in others but will, so just google it and be on the lookout I guess. I think the US release date is in May, but again... *shrug*

HI II MUST YELL AT YOU ABOUT ROBOT DREAMS
It was honestly awesome. The animation? Character designs? Story? Everything??? With no dialogue?? 😭 As someone who really wants to pursue a career in 2d animation, who thought that it was pretty much dead, suddenly seeing a movie made in my country, with the most amazing animation ever, make it to the Oscars really lifted my spirits up. Everyone truly made an imcredible job, thank you so much for it
I LOVE IT WHEN PEOPLE YELL AT ME ABOUT GOOD THINGS THANK YOU!
Man, I know! Two 2D films in the Oscars? Also I know for a fact that there are more 2D projects coming. And I know this because I've been working on them ;) We're seeing a sort of 2D revival in Europe as of late. Hopefully it becomes a new trend. People just gotta go WATCH THAT SHIT IN THE CINEMAS DAMMIT. Show the industry 2D is not second class in the mainstream public eye.
Sorry for the mini rant^^

hey! Was blessed with the opportunity to watch Robots dreams and I am WEEPING. It feels so much longer than it actually is, and yet every single minute was so precious to me (and this is coming from someone who has a hard time sitting through 30 minutes of a show let alone an hour.) Somehow the team managed to convey the slow passage of time so well that even I felt it was months by the time credits rolled. I enjoy that the ending wasn't what I expected of it. Even if it kinda stings. You all did such an amazing job on this lil movie. and AAAAAAAA I'm not coherent rn. but just know I really enjoyed it!
Not really spoilers, but warning just in case:
Ahhh that's awesome, glad you enjoyed it so much TwT I know what you mean about the ending, and I agree. I think the fact that it hurts so much says a lot about the rest of the film and how much we love these characters. On the other hand, it poses a very hopeful concept that I think everybody should consider.
Thank so much friend!! ^w^
