genuine question is aziraphale truly selfless if he does most selfless things to feel good? And is crowley truly selfless if he's ready to run as option b when things go really south? I don't mean to start bs i really wonder abt that for a while now

Two very different questions, so let's have a look.

Being selfless is (broadly) defined as caring more about other people's needs, wants, and well-being than your own. If you only care about other people because you personally benefit from it, that's selfish, even if you still help people in the process.

While the outcome is the same, the intention and motivation behind it are opposites. So no, Aziraphale is not selfless because he doesn't give a shit about anyone but himself (which has been canonically established over and over again).

Crowley, on the other hand, genuinely cares about people and helps because he doesn't want anyone to get hurt. Whether it's goats, children, humans, or a random angel he doesn't even know—his acts of kindness are coming from a selfless place.

Sure, sometimes he is selfish, and sometimes he helps people because it's important for reasons outside of their well-being, but that's normal, that's what everyone does. No one is 100% selfless all the time. But compared to Aziraphale, his kindness is genuine.

I have talked at length about the fact that Crowley is not a runner. His plan B is not to run away, it never has been. He fights until it seems hopeless and then he fights some more; he was ready to go down with his stars, with the universe, with planet earth, and he paid greatly for that.

However, even if he were to prioritize keeping himself safe, his previous actions would still be selfless. Just because he is slowly learning how to centre his life around himself (something everyone needs to learn how to do or you're gonna be fucked up and exhausted and then die unhappy) doesn't mean he suddenly no longer cares. Crowley is starting to find a balance away from Aziraphale, and that's good. He's allowed to do that.

It's the 80s. Aziraphale is the town-lesbian that gets tolerated, but beeing the only openly queer person in town, has accepted that she will live alone or will have to move to the city.

Crowley wants to escape from the city, mostly her ex-girlfriend, who she simply doesn't want to see again. And that proves hard if he stays in the same city, where they share the same usual haunts.

They meet and fall in love. Then they kiss on the lips.
