TOPIK 1 Vocabulary in 40 days / day 1

Hello everyone!! It's been a long long time, I'm sorry, I'm in a new semester in college and I'm almost finishing it so it's been a bit chaotic hahah but well here I am, I'm more preparing for topik forreal, but I'm using resources for it to set myself a level and know til which point I know for sure. I've been kinda stuck in early intermediate level and also really busy, so I think it will help me a lot to set myself a goal and not being so all over the place.

For this vocabulary, I'm using the book 쏙쏙 한국어 TOPIK 어휘 초급 40 Days. I know most of the words of this list but I'm using it to review as well since I'm not the best at reviewing stuff hehe

And I have made a quizlet deck in case you wanna check it out here. I hope it's helpful for you as well! I will be making posts about grammar points.

I passed the halfway point in my SungKyun Korean textbok today. Took me a month. If I can keep the pace (I probably won't be able to since it's getting more difficult), another month and I'll be ready to write a full review of it.

I'm even keeping up with filling up the textbook's Memrise course and reviewing it every day.

The truth is, I've only came across one Korean grammar point I haven't learned before, that's why it's going so smoothly.

Still, I like reviewing and refreshing my knowledge of Korean language since my studying so far has been very disjointed.

난 지금까지 글을 잘 쓴다고 생각하고 살아왔는데 큰 착각이었다. 에세이 주제를 5시간 동안이나 붙잡고 정하질 못했다. 애꿎게 에세이 이렇게 쓰라고 나눠준 핸드아웃만 수십 번을 다시 보고 있는데 여전히 모르겠다.

내가 잘 하는 것과 거리가 먼 강의만 신청한 것은 아닌지, 초급 스페인어 수업에 들어갔더니 스페인어 교수랑 스페인어로 대화하는 네이티브가 잔뜩이다. 저도 초급 한국어 개설된 학교를 찾았어야 했습니까, 물론 속으로 생각했다. 나는 스페인어의 a도 모르는데 옆에서 정말 모르겠다 표정으로 있으니 세뇨르 킴이 되었다.

이 얘기를 아내에게 했는데 침대에 같이 누워서 베사메무쵸를 유튜브에서 찾아 들었다. 트로트만 알았는데 원곡도 멋지구나. 수업에서 하나도 못알아들은 것과는 별개로. 

어떻게든 꾸역꾸역 하는 것도 실력이란걸 또 느낀다.

저녁 약속을 다녀온 아내가 피자를 들고 온단다. 차가운 맥주에 정신을 차려야지 싶다.

Hi!! What book are you using to study Korean? I've been looking for recommendations and I kinda liked how yours looked

Hey there! I use three different books to study Korean.

1) VOCABULARY: The book you saw in my most recent post is the 쏙쏙토픽 한국어 어휘 초급. (I can’t find it on any non-Korean shopping site but there are pdfs floating around…) 

It’s got 40 days worth of vocabulary and 24 words per day. I love this book because its sample sentences use mostly the words you’ve learned in the rest of the book so it helps you practice, and the grammar is actual grammar I might use and not too textbook-y or ridiculous. Plus it has both Chinese and Japanese as well which helps if you know either language. 

The words go in alphabetical order rather than by theme (eg. travel, coffee, sports) and I love that, but I know some people learn better through themes. 

If that’s you, I recommend this book: 2000 Essential Korean Words for Beginners. Personally, I find the sample sentences in this book a bit odd but my friend uses this book and has been doing really well with it. Grouping words by theme is super helpful for learning and this book also has Chinese and Japanese translations.

2) GRAMMAR: Korean Grammar in Use (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced)

Any Korean learner has probably had this book recommended to them and for good reason. The progression makes so much sense for learning, it provides a bunch of sample sentences and exercises, the vocab used in the sentences are not ridiculous so you can actually feel like you’re reading and understanding Korean, and it covers pretty much everything you need to know.

In the past I used to go through the HTSK website unit by unit but nothing beats a textbook. HTSK has become a great resource for when I need to look up specific grammatical things I find in sample sentences, but if you want comprehensive instruction in Korean grammar you’ll truly use, go through the KGIU books.

3) CONVERSATION: Talk to Me in Korean’s Real-Life Korean Conversations: Intermediate

My friend an I try to memorize at least part of a conversation every week and honestly it has helped me so much with not just speaking but listening as well. I can begin to pick out certain phrases I hear every day in the office that went right over my head before. No language self-study is complete without some way to put all that you’ve learned in 1) and 2) into context and this book is a great way to do that. I recommend checking out the look insides on Youtube to see which level you should get. 

(Also I just recommend watching random TTMIK videos whenever you’re scrolling through Youtube looking for something to pass the time with hehe)
