Claudia's depression era print dresses

During the great depression, cost-cutting manufacturers simplified designs but used colorful prints usually on a functional but inexpensive fabric such as cotton or muslin, which also allowed for increased practicality and durability as women took on increasing workload during the economic hardship. Claudia is seen wearing various types of print in the mid to late 30's that were popular for everyday wear. By this time, Claudia considers herself an adult and is wearing fully adult silhouettes and hemlines although the costumes emphasize her petite frame. Even though fashion in the 1930s went back to a more traditional waistline compared to the previous decade, the choice to put her in loose dresses rather than the more feminine formfitting silhouette of the day highlights her body's lack of maturity.

In the scene before she decides to leave home again she is once again in a dress reminiscent of her childhood sailor dress with a schoolgirl-esque collar and bow, showing us that even if she is an adult woman now and has taken on the responsibilities of one, she is still Louis's little girl in her heart.

It’s March and all I can think about is Hilda’s family’s varying approaches to spending Halloween together (mainly costumes)

Hilda takes it SO seriously, and refuses store bought costumes. She makes all her costumes herself and makes them as terrifying as she can, full sfx and fake(?) blood everywhere. Though one year when she doesn’t have time she just dyes her hair brown and says she’s normal now

Tontu is the opposite, he’s got a bunch of old storebought costumes in Nowehre Space so when Hilda drags him into her Halloween shenanigans he grabs some god awful £4 Tesco certified costume and calls it a day. It doesn’t even come close to fitting

Johanna I can see going one of two ways - either she’s low effort in a cute way, like she just grabs a broom and draws a spider on her cheek and is like “I’m a witch :)”, OR she gets just as into it as Hilda and immerses herself fully in whatever character she is. The kids love her, the adults judge her. I know for a fact however that she LOVES handing out candy to kids

Idk if Halloween would be a thing in Elven culture, it doesn’t sound like a very elfy thing. I think Alfur would be really interested in the historical origins of Halloween and learning about all the traditions old and new. In terms of costumes I think Hilda would dress him up as a poisonous bug or something to fuck with people, and he’s not overly impressed about it

Baba loves all the candy, and the fact that this holiday mostly takes place at night so she gets to be involved! I think she’d rip apart any costume that people try to put on her though

Bonus - Lauren keeps getting told to change because her costumes aren’t appropriate for the kids. She doesn’t really lean into the scary aspect of Halloween costumes, per say. Oh also she dresses Twig up in cute costumes (and tries with Baba but gives up pretty quickly)

My friends had an appointment to get their cat spayed on a date that turned out to be a week after she eventually gave birth (she was already pregnant when they made the appt unbeknownst to them 💀) and she’s an indoor cat but she got out for like 3-4 hours one day and that’s logically the only window of time when she could have gotten pregnant…. now that’s a gal on a MISSION if I’ve ever seen one.

I feel like one of the biggest signs that there's still misogyny in the Houses is the fact that they still use derogatory language for women. IIRC, Gideon calls Harrow a bitch a few times in GTN & Ianthe a skank in HTN, which are both...very charged terms (To be clear, I'm absolutely not trying to cancel Gideon here; she is 100% also a victim of misogyny & a victim in general. But I do wonder where a very isolated young woman learned those words and who was saying them)

oh yeah absolutely! see also, gideon calling alecto a slut in ntn. i don't really understand why people think that gideon would be using this highly gendered language and exclusively in reference to women unless there was still some level of misogyny in the nine houses. i guess irl people get desensitized to these words as gendered insults, but they really don't make sense as insults unless you live in a world with some level of ingrained misogyny, and gideon exclusively talks like that in reference to women as far as i remember. also, i agree with you anon that gideon is a victim of misogyny, but i suspect based on her using this language and generally being a teenager growing up in a society with some level of systemic sexism, that she (like most of us!) deals with a fair bit of internalized misogyny too.
