How to explain Les Mis characters to your friends
Enjolras 'Enjy dearest', 'Enj':
Angry blond boy. "Eat the rich". Either gay or aroace. His celebrity crush is Robespierre. He may or may not have a crush on a specific wine lover. Also Aaron Tveit. That's it
Combeferre 'Ferre':
The 'hot' scholar. Rly likes moths I guess. Wears glasses bc he's smart and smart ppl wear glasses. Has done nothing wrong, ever. We love him .
Courfeyrac 'Courf':
Everybody's friend. Flirty, fruity bitch. Round and lovable. Possibly in a relationship with either Combeferre or Jehan. Marius' own personal extrovert. Keeps the group together. Portrayed by the Mighty, the Fruity Fra Fee.
Grantaire 'R':
Likes to drink. A lot. Bi bitch, hopelessly in love with a certain blondie. Hold-hands-before-getting-shot-to-death kind of crush. Rly good at history and philosophy. Cynic. Also, fandom decided that he draws<3. Big hobo energy. Ask the fandom about the actor in the 2012 musical and they'll shed tears
Jean Prouvaire 'Jehan':
Ah yes, the softie. Love poetry and playing the flute. Most likely smoke weed. Plant parent. Gender unknown. We love their hippie bullshit. I don't remember the actor's name but he was kinda cute
Bahorel 'Baho':
The fruity gym bro. Enjoys fistfighting. Possibly Feuilly's bf. Man bun and beard. Studies law but doesn't want to be a lawyer. Doodles instead. Gavroche's idol. His celebrity crush is probably Dwayne Johnson or sth.
Feuilly:
IwbavajsbJzkabzjsvs. We love him. He's pure and innocent. Orphan. Makes fans for a living. Really loves the countries of the world. Headcannoned as Polish. Enjolras' fav ho. Wears flannels. I'll stop here because oh boi I can go on for ages
Bossuet/Lesgles:
Bald guy. Wholesome. He's also extremely unlucky and Victor made sure that's his only personality trait. Polyamoryyyy. His bf is Joly, his gf is Musichetta. It's just... Bossuet, you know?
Joly:
Doctor? Yeah, did I mention he's a germaphobe? Poor guy. Eccentric asf. Carries a cane everywhere. Will wake up in the middle of the night to align his bed according to the earth's poles and shit. Yes, he has a bf and gf, as previously mentioned.
Gavroche 'Gav':
Best boiiii. Smol, like, 10-12 yrs old. Savage. Absolutely destroyed Enjolras when in an argument. Also managed to trick a skilled criminal once. Rip, he would have loved Minecraft. Eponine and Azelma's brother. Courfeyrac's instant son. Looks up to Bahorel.
Marius Pontmercy:
The Most Awkward Human Being. Like, fr. Courfeyrac's emotional support introvert. Possibly the only straight here but who knows??? Idk he's kinda close with Courf. Anyway Enj amd Ferre scare him. Especially Ferre. He somehow gets a gf??? Survived
Eponine 'Ponine' Thenardieur
Marius' side ho. Has a crush on him. Bit I think she's gayyyy. Or bi. There's no way she's interested in men only. Anyway, poor. Terrible household situation :(. Feminist. I hope she gets a gf in her second life. R had a smol crush on her but that was just a phase. She deserved better, like everyone.
Cosette Fauchelevent/Valjean:
Marius' main ho (how this guy manages to get bitches is beyond me). Cottagecore goth (is that a thing?). Adopted. Such a sweet gal. Eponine could also be her gf <3.
Montparnasse 'Parnasse':
Ah him. Okay this guy. He is s narcissistic but a good one. One day he looked in the mirror and said 'Wow im hot lets murder people' and so he did exactly that. Said criminal tricked by Gavroche. 'Dandy'. He's so cool I love him sm.
Azelma Thenardieur:
Poor girl doesn't get any development. She's just there. Survived. Is rly cool tho, trust me.
Jean Valjean:
Stole bread and went to jail for 19 years. Villain origin story. Then he stole from a child (which may or may not have been Feuilly but that's another story for another post) and he instantly went good. Became mayor and businessman. One of his employees died so he found her daughter and raised her. Survived for a while. Is supposed to be the protagonist lol. Wholesome grandpa
Inspector Javert 'Jav jav man':
Is his life's goal to arrest Valjean. I say enemies to lovers trope. Starts off as a bitch, tbh.
Fantine:
My poor girl deserved the world. Her bf got her pregnant and fled :(. She gave Cosette over to some strangers to raise her while she worked in a nearby town, sending them money for Cosette's expenses. That's a no no there but ok. Gets fired, becomes a prostitute, dies. So of any of you out there shame sex workers I'll choke u while u sleep.

MSA X DP: The Ultimate Enemy Chapter 12: Jazz, Arthur and Jane with Portable Fenton Ghost Peelers/Dark Danny, Dark Sophie and Midnight Dan knock Jazz, Arthur and Jane unconscious and drag Jazz, Arthur and Jane away/Meanwhile in Dark Future/Meets Reformed Vlad, Reformed Juleka and Reformed Diesel
---COMMERCIAL BREAK---
Scene opens on Casper High, Mighty Falcon's High, University School, then to the testing room. Lancer is now sitting at the desk at the front of the room, and Disguised Dark Danny, Disguised Dark Sophie, and Disguised Midnight Dan are still copying answers from the answer sheets to their tests. They looks up at the door and see Jazz, Arthur, and Jane frowning at them through the glass. They looks around quickly, and then a transparent copies of their adult selfs peels off and dives into the floor as they scowls back at them. Out in the hall, the copy slips up behind them and zaps them as they pull the Fenton Peelers. They scream and then collapse, unconscious, to the floor. They drag them offscreen by the ankles.
Scene change: back in the Ghost Zone...
Danny: Well, that's Vlad for ya. [We see that he is looking at a gigantic purple football.] Subtle as a flying mallet. [He pushes the football aside to reveal a swirling portal. He jumps through into a dim cave packed with equipment.]
Sophie: ? Wait... It’s football game? Going to see them, Jaleka
Dan: On the way, Diesel...
Old/Future Vlad: Come to kick a defenceless old man while he's down? [We see a beard and one arm, the fingers tapping the arm of a chair.]
Old/Future Jaleka: Not working, defenceless old woman... While she’s down? [We see a hair tied in a bun lower back, her hands held lower]
Old/Future Diesel: Not enough, not work. Helpless old man, he's down
Danny: Defenseless? Old?
Sophie: Not working?
Dan: Not enough? What?
Danny approaches Vlad's large, V-emblazoned chair from behind; he is sitting at a bank of consoles, chemistry glassware to the side. Vlad spins about abruptly. He is still wearing a suit, but it is torn and stained and he is barefoot. His hair and beard have grown long and there are dark rings under his eyes.
Sophie sees Jaleka turn to show. She is wearing Dress Long and Mary Shoes but with a coat long, She has tied her hair in a bun lower Upsweep. She has puffy eyes.
Dan sees Diesel turned to walk to show. He is wearing a suit, torn and stained, orphaned clothes and boots. His hair has grown long, faux hawk long hair and long beard. He has puffy eyes.
Danny: Man. What happened to you?
Sophie: ! Oh my God... What happened to you?
Dan: Not better, what happened to you?
Old/Future Vlad: I could ask you the very same question, my boy. Although perhaps [he stands with the aid of a cane] I should ask what "hasn't" happened to you. Yet.
Old/Future Jaleka: I can ask you the very same question, my girl. They have what they? See it... What happened to them?
Old/Future Diesel: Right, my boy. Same ask, what happened with them? We have to tell them that they are not good.

So let's try again.
In DQ9, there are 3 gods:
Zenus: the God, the Great Architect, the Almighty.
Celestria: his daughter, later named Yggdrasil.
Corvus: simple angel gone rogue, took Zenus's place in the end game and is called the Mighty.
So chronogically, it starts with Zenus being disappointed in mortals because they're selfish, ungrateful, why is he even wasting time on them, so he tries to make apocalypse. His daughter blocks the attacks and announces mortal are worthy and she'll ~~hold her breath~~ transform into a tree until they prove it to him. So he builds the Observatory (flying island-building) and Celestrians (angels) tasked to take care of mortals.
So there are angels everywhere in towns, on the road, invisible and doing side quests like finding lost items and keeping monsters away from villages. Mortals make bubbles of gratitude energy and angels believe if they bring enough of these to Yggdrasil (who they ignore is the daughter of god), then god will allowed them to live forever in his realm and they'll all be retreated.
Your story begins as you're being tested by your mentor Aquila, who wants to trust you with guarding his assigned village, so he can go search his own mentor who disappeared 300 years ago. But when you passed the test, turns out you have brought the last required Benevolessence. The tree starts glowing and bearing Fyggs (wish granting fruits), the angels are happy to be finally retreated and they're going to see god in person! The magical flying train lands on the Observatory, but suddenly, dark rays coming from the mortal land and strike the Observatory, the train and the realm of the Almighty. You learn later that this attack harmed Zenus who split into 10 post game bosses you can beat again and again for your greatest pleasure. But also the train, the fruits and you fall. You loose your wings and aureola (which made you invisible and able to see benevolessence). You learn down there that the attack also caused earthquakes that put people in danger and agitated monsters (therefore victims of a god). Searching for a way to get back up, you find a fairy who's related to the train and you try to gather benevolessence to fuel the train. You manage to do that and Yggdrasil chooses to talk to you, saying you're a chosen one and you have to gather the fyggs before they harm anyone, because its magic goes wrong with mortal (take a note of this).
So your mission is to find people who made wishes that went inevitably wrong, make people renounce to them and you get the fruit back. Including a priest (Jack of Alltrades) who wants to guide his people better, but his fygg made him a monster who "convinces" people to obey through pain and fear. A fisherman (Dylan Jones) who died at sea and wished his orphan girl to be safe and he became a leviathan, worshipped and abused by his village, he had to fish for those lazy bastards. A rich orphan girl (Marion) who was very sick and had no friends, instead of wishing health she made her human sized copy doll alive to be her friend and died in the hour, and the doll tried to make friend with people who only pretended to be so they'd get her wealth, then she gets kidnapped, and this conversation happens https://youtu.be/GP8VyADuQ-c at 12:52, the doll gives up on her life because she can't make friends. Another victim of the fruit is a lizard pet (Drak) who fell in love with his human owner and his wish didn't transform him into a human, but a dragon who kidnaps his owner. The other fyggs didn't really have such tragic outcomes so anyway you are going back to the Observatory with the 7 fyggs, but on the way you meet Aquila, who attacks you (note, you're completely paralysed if you try to attack a fellow angel who's your superior. Remember that for later) and steals the fruits. More adventures later you get back to the Observatory where you learn Aquila did give the fruits. You go where Aquila has gone and turns out he's double agent for king Godwin who imprisoned Corvus, Aquila's mentor. He harms Aquila, you defeat him then he tries to kill you in his last breath, but Aquila protects you and dies. You freed Corvus who attacks you and you can't do anything, then he goes to the realm of the Almighty and claim his throne. You bring the fruits to Yggdrasil who transforms back, Celestria makes one more fruit out of all the friends you made on the way and tells you to wish to be mortal. You do it and go beat Corvus, who is now very demonic. But as you defeat him, his love interest who died and became a ghost 300 years before appears and he reverts to being an angel, and they go together to the afterlife. Back at the Observatory, Celestria says she makes all the angels (so not you since you're a mortal now) become stars in the sky (which is how after angel's death was described to you after Aquila died), she also destroys the Observatory, then she asks you to keep doing your job like an angel, but on the whole mortal realm, and the magical train brings you in the mortal world, then your mortality takes fully effect as you cease to see the train, your fairy friend, etc.
Then a fygg falls from the sky and if you follow it, the village with the leviathan has a real leviathan (not the girl's dad who is dead for good) who gives you the fruit. You're given the choice to eat it and if you refuse, the fairy hits you until you eat it. Reminder, you're a mortal and the fyggs don't grant correct wishes to mortals. And when you do, the only thing that changes is that you can see people like that fairy and stuff like the train.
So yeah pretty much everyone suffered from one or several gods, but especially the Celestrians and the mortals who found a fygg.
anon im obsessed w you?? wow. like seriously this is amazing
anyways whoa i might have to play dq9. god seems sucky i think its so funny that theyre called fyggs i cant believe aquila died go corvus meeting his dead girlfriend? i love that you become mortal i think its so fitting that angels become stars in the sky
anyways ill do a quick search on dq9 to gauge how popular it is before deciding whether it goes in the major or minor bracket but it definitely is guaranteed a slot!!

Woe to Tyrants
1 Woe to those who enact unjust decrees and draft oppressive legislation 2 to deprive the impoverished of justice and rob my people’s poor of their rights, looting widows and preying on orphans! 3 What will you do on the day of punishment, when calamity comes from afar? To whom will you flee for help? Where will you leave your wealth, 4 so as not to squat among the prisoners or fall among the slain?
Even after all this, his anger remains, his upraised hand still threatens.
5 “Oh Ashur, the rod expressing my anger! The club in their hands is my fury! 6 I am sending him against a hypocritical nation, ordering him to march against a people who enrage me, to take the spoil and the plunder and trample them down like mud in the street. 7 That is not what Ashur intends, that is not what they think; rather, they mean to destroy, to cut down nation after nation. 8 For [their king] says, ‘Aren’t all my commanders kings? 9 Hasn’t Kalno [suffered] like Kark’mish, Hamat like Arpad, Shomron like Dammesek? 10 Just as my hand reached the kingdoms of non-gods, with more images than in Yerushalayim and Shomron; 11 so won’t I do to Yerushalayim and her non-gods what I did to Shomron and her idols?’”
12 Therefore when Adonai has done everything he intends to do to Mount Tziyon and Yerushalayim, “I will punish the king of Ashur for the boasting that comes from his proud heart and from reveling in his arrogant looks. 13 For he says,
“‘With my own strong arm I have done this, and with my wisdom, because I’m so clever! I erased the boundaries between peoples, I plundered their stores for the future; as a mighty man, I subjugated the inhabitants. 14 My hand found the riches of the peoples like a nest; and as one gathers abandoned eggs, I gathered the whole earth! Not one wing fluttered, not one beak opened or let out a chirp!’”
15 Should the axe glorify itself over the one who chops with it? Should the saw magnify itself over the one who moves it? It’s as if a stick could wave the hand that raises it up, or as if a wooden staff could lift [a person, who is] not made of wood. 16 Therefore the Lord, Adonai-Tzva’ot, will send leanness to his well-fed ones; and in place of his glory, a fire will be kindled that will burn and burn. 17 The light of Isra’el will become a fire and his Holy One a flame, burning and devouring his thorns and briars in a single day. 18 The glory of his forest and of his fertile land he will consume body and soul, like an invalid wasting away. 19 So few forest trees will remain that a child could list them.
20 On that day the remnant of Isra’el, those of the house of Ya‘akov who escaped, will no longer rely on the man who struck them down, but will truly rely on Adonai, the Holy One of Isra’el. 21 A remnant will return, the remnant of Ya‘akov, to the mighty God. 22 For, although your people, Isra’el, are like the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will return. Destruction is decreed, overflowing with justice. 23 Adonai Elohim-Tzva’ot will bring about this decreed destruction throughout all the land.
24 Therefore Adonai Elohim-Tzva’ot says:
“My people living in Tziyon, don’t be afraid of Ashur, even when he strikes you with a stick and raises his staff against you, the way it was in Egypt. 25 For in but a little while, my fury will end; and my anger will have destroyed them.”
26 Adonai-Tzva’ot will wield a whip against them, as he did when striking Midyan at the Rock of ‘Orev; as his staff was over the sea, he will raise it, the way it was in Egypt.
27 On that day his burden will fall from your shoulders and his yoke from your neck; the yoke will be destroyed by your prosperity.
28 He has come to ‘Ayat and passed through Migron. He has stored his equipment at Mikhmas. 29 They have crossed the pass, then lodged at Geva. Ramah is shaking, Giv‘at-Sha’ul has fled. 30 Cry, shriek, Bat-Gallim! Listen, Layish! Poor ‘Anatot! 31 Madmenah is in flight, The people of Gevim take cover. 32 This very day he will stop at Nov; and he will shake his fist at the mountain of the daughter of Tziyon, at the hill of Yerushalayim. 33 See how Adonai Elohim-Tzva’ot lops off the branches with terrible violence! The ones standing highest are chopped down, the lofty are laid low. 34 He will hack down the forest underbrush with an axe, and the L’vanon in its splendor falls. — Isaiah 10 | Complete Jewish Bible (CJB) Complete Jewish Bible Copyright 1998 by David H. 20 questions for fic writers
tagged by my wife @dxppercxdxver (although I really don't consider myself a fic writer these days lmao)
1. how many works do you have on ao3?
5 (and 2 orphaned)
2. what’s your total ao3 word count?
22,856
3. what fandoms do you write for?
considering I have at maximum 2 fics per fandom. you could say none! although my most popular fics were broadchurch and good omens
4. what are your top 5 fics by kudos?
the first is an orphaned batman/joker fic (does anyone remember that era of this blog? I'm so sorry lmao)
she - broadchurch
i love to live so pleasantly (lazing on a sunny afternoon) - good omens
Blueberry - IT (2017) (an incredibly cringe fic I wrote as a teenager for the love of god please don't read this)
i just want to be held (by your cold hands) - broadchurch
5. do you respond to comments? why or why not?
occasionally! if there's something that like. needs a response I do try to give them but otherwise I am very bad at getting back to comments. I do read and appreciate them all though!
6. what is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
it's the IT one tagged above lmao due to the like. 15/16 year old me projecting. I'm not very good at writing angst!
7. what’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
probably either of the broadchurch fics due to. trans joy and also gay domesticity
8. do you get hate on fics?
not actively? during my batman/b*tjokes years (bearing in mind I was about 14) I used to get occasional hate on tumblr due to trans/gay headcanons but that wasn't necessarily fic related. I also once had a pretty big b*tjokes writer comment on an old fic (like three or four years after I'd written it, when I was no longer In The Fandom) claiming I'd stolen their ideas and needed to either remove my work or credit them despite. only having read a few of their works very briefly. the work of mine in Question being a prompt fill. and me just following a lot of the trends of the fandom at the time? like sorry you don't actually have a trademark on hurt/comfort sick fics buddy it's a Fairly Popular Concept. anyway yeah that's about it.
9. do you write smut? if so, what kind?
nope <3 I've never tried and frankly I don't think I'd be very good at getting any ideas I have Across in a way that reads as sexy or hot enough to warrant actually writing it lmao
10. do you write crossovers? what’s the craziest one you’ve written?
I don't think I've fully written or published any crossovers, however! every character I've ever liked has been thrown into a killjoys au in my brain at one point or another (including but not limited to: the scooby doo gang, the penumbra pod gang, the eos 10 gang, Cecil and Carlos wtnv, ect). myself and jon plotted a whole magnus archives/mst3k au that I Wish one of us had written, and another mst3k/the mechanisms au that started as a joke and become so insanely important to us it sincerely helped us get together as a couple. we also had an overall eos10/penumbra podcast crossover that I personally never wrote anything for but I think jon Started some unpublished fics that never got finished.
11. have you ever had a fic stolen?
not as far as I know!
12. have you ever had a fic translated?
again, i dont beliebe so, but people are more than welcome to do so as long as im credited ofc
13. have you ever co-written a fic before?
I class at least the first of my broadchurch fics as partially co-written with Jon bc he was a Huge Help in that fic getting written, and as you might be able to tell from above we've Plotted a lot of fic ideas together (another includes a very goofy villain-decay bill cipher gravity falls fic) but basically none of them ever actually get written
14. what’s your all time favourite ship?
argh I can't choose one all time favourite. jonmartin themagnusarchives are insanely dear and important to me, jongerry / jonmartingerry are closely behind that. poly scooby doo gang. vince/howard from the mighty boosh. these are all just sentimental ships if I'm honest. also I became ridiculously attached to mine and Jon's crackship of jonny d'ville themechanisms / Mike mst3k
15. what’s a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
honestly I'm kind of past the point of hoping to get back into writing due to. complete lack of willpower. but I wish I'd gotten round to writing the third trans Hardy fic I had planned at one point </3
16. what are your writing strengths?
idk!! I think I'm good at capturing like. very specific moments of domesticity and comfort. and I think when I'm imagining A Scene I'm quite good at getting the vibes of that scene across. but other than that I'm really not sure
17. what are your writing weaknesses?
oh god uhh. actually writing. linking scenes together. Plot other than just vague "here's two characters hanging out and existing". the list goes on
18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I don't think I've actually attempted it myself? due to most characters I've written have been. incredibly British. I will say a pet peeve of mine in Reading a fic is when it is a fic in 99% English that'll have a large chunk of dialogue in another language, without a translation available somewhere for it. like a word or two is fine but if there's some actual plot in there and you're expecting me to Google translate it, that feels kind of the same as when subtitles simply say (speaking french) or whatever instead of Telling Us What They're Saying
19. first fandom you wrote for?
embarrassingly and horrifically. h*rry p*tter (I was 11)
20. favourite fic you’ve written?
it has to be she simply due to the Amount of trans love and support I got to hear about in the comments of that fic :,)
I'm not tagging anyone bc to be completely honest I don't remember which of my mutaks actively write <3

14th August >> Mass Readings (USA)
Saint Maximilian Kolbe, Priest, Martyr
on
Monday, Nineteenth Week in Ordinary Time.
Monday, Nineteenth Week in Ordinary Time
(Liturgical Colour: Red: A (1))
(Readings for the feria (Monday))
(There is a choice today between the readings for the ferial day (Monday) and those for the memorial. The ferial readings are recommended unless pastoral reasons suggest otherwise)
First Reading Deuteronomy 10:12-22 Circumcise your hearts. Befriend the alien, for you were once aliens yourselves.
Moses said to the people: “And now, Israel, what does the LORD, your God, ask of you but to fear the LORD, your God, and follow his ways exactly, to love and serve the LORD, your God, with all your heart and all your soul, to keep the commandments and statutes of the LORD which I enjoin on you today for your own good? Think! The heavens, even the highest heavens, belong to the LORD, your God, as well as the earth and everything on it. Yet in his love for your fathers the LORD was so attached to them as to choose you, their descendants, in preference to all other peoples, as indeed he has now done. Circumcise your hearts, therefore, and be no longer stiff-necked. For the LORD, your God, is the God of gods, the LORD of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who has no favorites, accepts no bribes; who executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and befriends the alien, feeding and clothing him. So you too must befriend the alien, for you were once aliens yourselves in the land of Egypt. The LORD, your God, shall you fear, and him shall you serve; hold fast to him and swear by his name. He is your glory, he, your God, who has done for you those great and terrible things which your own eyes have seen. Your ancestors went down to Egypt seventy strong, and now the LORD, your God, has made you as numerous as the stars of the sky.”
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 147:12-13, 14-15, 19-20
R/ Praise the Lord, Jerusalem.
Glorify the LORD, O Jerusalem; praise your God, O Zion. For he has strengthened the bars of your gates; he has blessed your children within you.
R/ Praise the Lord, Jerusalem.
He has granted peace in your borders; with the best of wheat he fills you. He sends forth his command to the earth; swiftly runs his word!
R/ Praise the Lord, Jerusalem.
He has proclaimed his word to Jacob, his statutes and his ordinances to Israel. He has not done thus for any other nation; his ordinances he has not made known to them. Alleluia.
R/ Praise the Lord, Jerusalem.
Gospel Acclamation cf. 2 Thessalonians 2:14
Alleluia, alleluia. God has called you through the Gospel to possess the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel Matthew 17:22-27 They will kill him and he will be raised. The subjects are exempt from the tax.
As Jesus and his disciples were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is to be handed over to men, and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day.” And they were overwhelmed with grief.
When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of the temple tax approached Peter and said, “Does not your teacher pay the temple tax?” “Yes,” he said. When he came into the house, before he had time to speak, Jesus asked him, “What is your opinion, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth take tolls or census tax? From their subjects or from foreigners?” When he said, “From foreigners,” Jesus said to him, “Then the subjects are exempt. But that we may not offend them, go to the sea, drop in a hook, and take the first fish that comes up. Open its mouth and you will find a coin worth twice the temple tax. Give that to them for me and for you.”
The Gospel of the Lord
R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Saint Maximilian Kolbe, Priest, Martyr
(Liturgical Colour: Red: A (1))
(Readings for the memorial)
(There is a choice today between the readings for the ferial day (Monday) and those for the memorial. The ferial readings are recommended unless pastoral reasons suggest otherwise)
Either:
First Reading Wisdom 3:1-9 As sacrificial offerings he took them to himself.
The souls of the just are in the hand of God, and no torment shall touch them. They seemed, in the view of the foolish, to be dead; and their passing away was thought an affliction and their going forth from us, utter destruction. But they are in peace. For if before men, indeed, they be punished, yet is their hope full of immortality; Chastised a little, they shall be greatly blessed, because God tried them and found them worthy of himself. As gold in the furnace, he proved them, and as sacrificial offerings he took them to himself. In the time of their visitation they shall shine, and shall dart about as sparks through stubble; They shall judge nations and rule over peoples, and the LORD shall be their King forever. Those who trust in him shall understand truth, and the faithful shall abide with him in love: Because grace and mercy are with his holy ones, and his care is with his elect.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Or:
First Reading 1 John 3:14-18 We should lay down our lives for our brothers.
Beloved: We know that we have passed from death to life because we love our brothers. Whoever does not love remains in death. Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life remaining in him. The way we came to know love was that he laid down his life for us; so we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. If someone who has worldly means sees a brother in need and refuses him compassion, how can the love of God remain in him? Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 116:10-11, 12-13, 16ac-17
R/ Precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful ones.
I believed, even when I said, “I am greatly afflicted”; I said in my alarm, “No man is dependable.”
R/ Precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful ones.
How shall I make a return to the LORD for all the good he has done for me? The cup of salvation I will take up, and I will call upon the name of the LORD.
R/ Precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful ones.
O LORD, I am your servant; you have loosed my bonds. To you will I offer sacrifice of thanksgiving, and I will call upon the name of the LORD.
R/ Precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful ones.
Gospel Acclamation John 12:25
Alleluia, alleluia. If you hate your life in this world, you will preserve it to life eternal. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel John 15:12-16 This is my commandment: love one another.
Jesus said to his disciples: “This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father. It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you.”
The Gospel of the Lord
R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Job 29:12 Commentaries: Because I delivered the poor who cried for help, And the orphan who had no helper.
"Matthew Poole's Commentary
I delivered from his potent oppressor. They did not honour me for my great wealth or power, but for my impartial justice and pity to the afflicted, and courage in maintaining their cause and right against their mighty adversaries.
None to help him; none that would own or help them, partly because they were poor, and unable to recompense them for it; and partly because their enemies were great, and likely to crush both them and their helpers; which made Job’s virtue more glorious."

Renungan 24Feb2024
Bacaan Injil Mat 5;43-48
Sebagaimana kutipan dalam film mengatakan, "In the hands of the Lord, we're safe in the storm." Semoga kita semua dapat menemukan perlindungan, kekuatan, dan harapan dalam tangan Tuhan, bahkan di tengah badai kehidupan yang melanda kita. Amin
Berkah Dalem

Job's Final Appeal
Tumblr media
1 I made a covenant with mine eyes, and I will not think upon a virgin.
2 Now what portion has God given from above? and is there an inheritance given of the Mighty One from the highest?
3 Alas! destruction to the unrighteous, and rejection to them that do iniquity.
4 Will he not see my way, and number all my steps?
5 But if I had gone with scorners, and if too my foot has hasted to deceit:
6 (for I am weighed in a just balance, and the Lord knows my innocence:)
7 if my foot has turned aside out of the way, or if mine heart has followed mine eye, and if too I have touched gifts with my hands;
8 then let me sow, and let others eat; and let me be uprooted on the earth.
9 If my heart has gone forth after another man's wife, and if I laid wait at her doors;
10 then let my wife also please another, and let my children be brought low.
11 For the rage of anger is not to be controlled, in the case of defiling another man's wife.
12 For it is a fire burning on every side, and whomsoever it attacks, it utterly destroys.
13 And if too I despised the judgment of my servant or my handmaid, when they pleaded with me;
14 what then shall I do if the Lord should try me? and if also he should at all visit me, can I make an answer?
15 Were not they too formed as I also was formed in the womb? yea, we were formed in the same womb.
16 But the helpless missed not whatever need they had, and I did not cause the eye of the widow to fail.
17 And if too I ate my morsel alone, and did not impart of it to the orphan;
18 (for I nourished them as a father from my youth and guided them from my mother's womb.)
19 And if too I overlooked the naked as he was perishing, and did not clothe him;
20 and if the poor did not bless me, and their shoulders were not warmed with the fleece of my lambs;
21 if I lifted my hand against an orphan, trusting that my strength was far superior to his:
22 let them my shoulder start from the blade-bone, and my arm be crushed off from the elbow.
23 For the fear of the Lord constrained me, and I cannot bear up by reason of his burden.
24 If I made gold my treasure, and if too I trusted the precious stone;
25 and if too I rejoiced when my wealth was abundant, and if too I laid my hand on innumerable treasures:
26 (do we not see the shining sun eclipsed, and the moon waning? for they have not power to continue:)
27 and if my heart was secretly deceived, and if I have laid my hand upon my mouth and kissed it:
28 let this also then be reckoned to me as the greatest iniquity: for I should have lied against the Lord Most High.
29 And if too I was glad at the fall of mine enemies, and mine heart said, Aha!
30 let then mine ear hear my curse, and let me be a byword among my people in my affliction.
31 And if too my handmaids have often said, Oh that we might be satisfied with his flesh; (whereas I was very kind:
32 for the stranger did not lodge without, and my door was opened to every one that came:)
33 or if too having sinned unintentionally, I hid my sin;
34 (for I did not stand in awe of a great multitude, so as not to declare boldly before them:) and if too I permitted a poor man to go out of my door with an empty bosom:
35 (Oh that I had a hearer,) and if I had not feared the hand of the Lord; and as to the written charge which I had against any one,
36 I would place it as a chaplet on my shoulders, and read it.
37 And if I did not read it and return it, having taken nothing from the debtor:
38 If at any time the land groaned against me, and if its furrows mourned together;
39 and if I ate its strength alone without price, and if I too grieved the heart of the owner of the soil, by taking aught from him:
40 then let the nettle come up to me instead of wheat, and a bramble instead of barley. And Job ceased speaking. — Job 31 | Brenton's Septuagint Translation (BST) The English translation of The Septuagint by Sir Lancelot Charles Lee Brenton (1851) Cross References: Genesis 3:8; Genesis 3:10; Exodus 23:2; Leviticus 20:10; Numbers 16:20; Numbers 16:30; Deuteronomy 4:19; Deuteronomy 11:16; Deuteronomy 17:2; Deuteronomy 28:30; Joshua 24:27; Judges 19:17; 2 Samuel 3:32; 1 Kings 21:19; 2 Chronicles 16:9; 2 Chronicles 32:18; Nehemiah 5:15; Job 1:3; Job 4:17; Job 5:3; Job 6:2-3; Job 9:30; Job 15:31; Job 19:7; Job 22:6-7; Job 22:9; Job 24:15; Job 29:7; Job 29:25; Job 35:14; Job 38:15; Psalm 7:4; Proverbs 24:17; Isaiah 5:6; Isaiah 10:3; Isaiah 58:7; Matthew 5:28; Matthew 25:35; Mark 10:23; John 4:37; Ephesians 6:9; James 1:27; James 5:4; Revelation 9:11

Readings of Sunday, August 14, 2023
Reading 1
DT 10:12-22
Responsorial Psalm
PS 147:12-13, 14-15, 19-20
R./ Praise the Lord, Jerusalem.
Glorify the LORD, O Jerusalem; praise your God, O Zion. For he has strengthened the bars of your gates; he has blessed your children within you. R./ Praise the Lord, Jerusalem.
He has granted peace in your borders; with the best of wheat he fills you. He sends forth his command to the earth; swiftly runs his word! R./ Praise the Lord, Jerusalem.
He has proclaimed his word to Jacob, his statutes and his ordinances to Israel. He has not done thus for any other nation; his ordinances he has not made known to them. Alleluia. R./ Praise the Lord, Jerusalem.
Gospel
MT 17:22-27
