In memoriam: Henry Grossman, the photographer who captured these (and many other) images in the 1960s, and in 1974.
The story behind photos 1-4 (3 & 4 are screenshots from CBS This Morning, 2013): "We were having breakfast in Nassau. George came in; he was still in his pajamas, had just awakened. I wasn't taking pictures at breakfast, or not intending to, and he looked so totally undefended, and different from any time I'd seen him that I said, 'George, I gotta take a picture.'" - Henry Grossman, CBS This Morning, March 23, 2013 (x)
“Despite their youth, the Beatles had depths that impressed Grossman. ‘I have a 25-minute audiotape of George and me talking about philosophy,’ he says. ‘He was so far ahead of what I knew then and know even now, my God. This was an old soul. Someone who knew and had thought about everything.’” - Brandeis Magazine, Spring 2013
“Harrison had personally invited his old friend Grossman to shoot the Dark Horse tour [in 1974]. ‘I knocked on the door of the rehearsal studio in Los Angeles,’ Grossman remembers. ‘When George opened the door, he gave me a big hug. We were like brothers at that point.’” - Harrison (2002)
“Since George’s death, Olivia Harrison has come by to have coffee with Grossman and look at photos of her late husband. ‘We’re in touch,’ he says. ‘I speak with her every once in a while.’” - Brandeis Magazine, Spring 2013 (x)

Quote
A girl from outside the door goes ‘Where’s Brenda? Where’s Brenda? A guy from the tour wants to talk to Brenda!’ I scrambled right out and went out in the hall, where everyone was standing around this guy. So I walked up to him and someone goes, 'He wants that pin of George you were wearing at the concert – the one that flashes on and off.’ I said I hadn’t been wearing a pin, just a George shirt. He’d mistaken me for someone else, but we all got to rapping with this guy, and his name was Jeff Raven and he did publicity for the tour and made the hotel arrangements. He was telling us how George has a museum in his house in England, and that he collects old Beatles things and he wanted that button that flashed on and off. So since we couldn’t give him that, everyone scrambled to their rooms and dug up something Beatle, ranging from a George coat hanger to a portrait of George. So, Jeff said that we’d all been so nice to him, he was going to invite us all up to his room so we could preview George’s new album (which wasn’t out at the time). So about 20 of us went up to his room and sat and listened to the new LP. It has about 8 songs on it, but they are long ones. And despite George’s hoarse voice, it’s pretty good. About 1:30AM, we all split and thanked him.

Caspian will you please infodump about Tom Petty to me? I'm new to Tomblr and I want to know more about him :)
GLADLY thank you so much for asking this made my day lmao
So I don't know quite how much you know about him already so I'll go with the like complete beginner biography thing if thats alright. So...long post incoming
Okay! The day it all began! His career as a "horse-cowboy" (quote @marrcartney 2022) began October 20th 1950 right. He's from Gainesville, Florida, had a dad (Earl, Tom's middle name as well) who was an abusive alcoholic, his mom Kitty who was very dear to him, and a younger brother Bruce. So yk the typical rockstar story, he wasn't very good in school or at least he didn't like it very much and he ended up dropping out at 17 I believe -- at which point he was in Mudcrutch and that became his thing. He learned guitar at least partly from Don Felder (of the Eagles). Interestingly enough, Tom Leadon was in Mudcrutch and he was the brother of Bernie Leadon who was also an Eagle. So he's got Mudcrutch right and there's all these people doing their thing (it's talked about in "Petty: the Biography" by Warren Zanes if you're interested) and I don't remember much because I'm terrible with names but I do know that at least a few guys thought Tom's voice was weird and at one point he was playing bass and singing lead at the same time which was neat. Oh also he played bass with Mudcrutch primarilly I believe. Ok so Mudcrutch right, and in Mudcrutch are Mike Campbell (lead guitar, neat story how they met but thats for another time) and Benmont Tench will stay with Tom past Mudcrutch. So in 1974, Mudcrutch decides its time to move forward from Gainesville, so they drive out in one of the member's (mom's??) van (Tom was not allowed to drive...another story...okay a few) and they go alllllll the way to L.A. where Tom ends up staying (Tom's oldest daughter Adria is born this year as well). So they're in L.A., they're young, they did well in Gainesville and they're ready to keep moving right. They put out their single "Depot Street" (good listen!)...and it fails. The band, well, disbands and you might think the story ends there but, to nobody's dismay!, it does not. Tom seemed to show promise, and he get's signed. He starts out making a record solo but quickly realizes he much prefers having a band. Enter: the Heartbreakers. With a bit of time, the Guys we know and love appear on the scene. Mike and Ben were there already, but now we add Stan Lynch on drums and Ron Blair on bass. And so in 1976 they put out their first record "Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers." It didn't do too well for I think it was a good 8 months, but somebody whose name escapes me found them and liked them enough to do some record company magic and get those boys on the radio right. Now they're off to the races! In '78 you get "You're Gonna Get It!," in '79 the legendary "Damn the Torpedoes," and in '81 "Hard Promises" (with the help of Stevie Nicks, a soon-to-be lifelong friend of Tom's...though they didn't start out quite on the best of terms). Now, between "Hard Promises" and 1982's release "Long After Dark" (arguably Tom's most underrated album), Ron Blair leaves the band and Howie Epstein joins in his place. Also in '82 is the birth of Tom's next kid AnnaKim. So this is the lineup for the band up until I think 2003 when Howie passed and Ron came back to fill in. I could go on about all his albums probably, but for now I'll try to keep this maybe a bit shorter than it would be otherwise lol. So fast forward to '88, Tom gets with Harrison, Dylan, Orbison, and Lynne to form the Traveling Wilburys and they put out 2 albums (one in '88 and the next in '90 after Roy's death). In '94, Tom had a rough divorce from his then-wife Jane, and fell into depression and substance abuse. Thankfully, he met Dana York, who he soon fell in love with and truth be told probably saved his life. He was able to get clean by '99 for the "Echo" tour, and the two later married in 2001. With the marriage came Dana's son from her previous marriage, Dylan, so now Tom has 3 kids. Next on the list is 2008, when Tom brings Mudcrutch back together to make another album. Why? I forget. But, I think something to do with the sake of nostalgia (you can really see in his music where he starts getting more nostalgic, one of the strongest expressions of this is "The Last DJ"

Virtual Sketchbook 1
Discussion:
Hi everyone! My name is Samantha Palmer and many years ago when I was in High School I won an art contest. The piece of artwork I created now hangs in a museum in Washington, D.C.
The artwork I was assigned is called Guernica by Pablo Picasso in 1937.
1. The piece was an anti-war symbol showing all the tragedies of war. This brought the Spanish Civil War to the attention of the world as the artwork made its tour around the world.
2. Guernica is a Spanish town that was bombed for 2 hours on April 26, 1937, by the Germans. This was an important town because it hosted the Republicans forces that harbored assorted factions.
3. While the artwork was in New York an antiwar activist defaced by spray painting it with red paint in 1974. It was immediately cleansed so the damage was not permanent.
4. Picasso refused to allow the Spaniards to have the painting until they Spanish re-established a democratic republic. However, after Picasso's death the Muriel was returned to Spain.
5. Picasso purposely used the bull and horse because they are two very characters in the Spanish culture.
When I first saw the artwork, I thought it was very strange. I thought it may have something to do with death right off the bat with there being a man dying right in the middle and someone on holding a dead person on the left side. Now that I have some history on the artwork, I see it a little differently. You can see the pain in it and understand how it shows the destruction of war. The fact that Picasso illustrated the weapons of war as horses, and swords but the bombs that rained from the sky left them helpless. With the person on the right being eaten from his feet up shows the ground going down all around him. It's a dark, gloomy, and painful message.

2. My shell ring that I look at everyday in my kitchen is an important piece of artwork for me. I have always loved the beach and the ocean, and always want to be close to it. This is my way of having it literally in my own home. I picked up each and every one of those shells here at the beaches of Southwest Florida. The media used is the beautiful shells. I used a Styrofoam ring and hot glue to make the ring. I attached a photo frame hanger on the back with resin. I think my shell ring is beautiful with all its colors and shapes and the beautiful thoughts it creates when looking at it.
3. I am 37 a years old woman, and I was born in Orlando, FL but I was raised in Knoxville, TN. I work at a very busy Dermatology group in southwest Florida. I think that what makes me unique is that I like to keep an open mind to everyone, and I am scared of no one. Often my friend and co-workers tell me that I don't know a stranger.
4. Self Portrait using artist Romare Bearden work as an example.

Okay so I like pop figures (bc I’m sure everyone had at least one in their room) and I have a small collection (and they’re all out of their boxes bc my mom assumed they were supposed to be out of their boxes). I have a Freddie Mercury one and I really want a Roger Taylor one, then I thought maybe I can get a George Harrison one to find out FUNK POP DOESN’T HAVE GEORGE HARRISON! Like how do they not have the guitarist of one of the biggest bands to ever happen in music history????
Apparently Funko Pop just made a John Lennon one…
But I have a idea, so here me out, I’ll practically beg funko pop to make a George Harrison funk pop based off of this outfit
Tumblr media
Bc this is such a iconic look for him!
What do you guys think?
sincerely apologizing for my rant lol,
Your friendly neighborhood tumbler Dom💜

George Harrison and Olivia Arias (and, in photo 2, Kumar Shankar) during the Dark Horse Tour, November 1974; photos by Henry Grossman.
CNN: “Olivia, did George usually put in a lot of winks and nudges to you when he wrote songs?” Olivia Harrison: “There were a lot of songs that I would look back on and go, ‘Oh yeah.’ He expressed his emotions in his songs. He didn’t really express them so much in daily life. He saved them up, I think. Sometimes, he was difficult to talk to about certain things, and then he would write a song, and I’d say, ‘How can you do that? How can you put your whole thoughts and inner being out there in a song?’ I could never do that. That was just the way he was — how artists are. They’re baring their souls to you. So nudges and winks? I guess there are a lot of them.” - CNN, May 1, 2012
“[George] made people laugh as much as any comedian, that’s for sure.” - Olivia Harrison, The Herald Scotland, June 18, 2009
“He was mischievous. He did like to tease people a lot. I just got so used to being wound up - he just wound me up every single day I think I knew him. And he said, ‘You’re just so easy to wind up.’ He’d make some really bad remark, and he’d just do it so I’d start protesting. And he was funny, and he made you funny to be around him, and if you could make him laugh, that was just great.” - Olivia Harrison, CNN, May 1, 2012
“George was bold, and he was very provocative. I don’t know how many times I jabbed him in the ribs at some function when he’d make one of his comments. I’d tell him, ‘Don’t go there, don’t start,’ but he liked to have fun with people. He always could break the ice.” - Olivia Harrison, The L.A. Times Music Blog, October 4, 2011
“He always tried to improve the moment, he was just, there are no words really, he was such a wonderful person to be around. He had his moments, you know, he was crabby too sometimes, but generally he was just about the funniest person I’d ever met.” - Olivia Harrison, Radio 2, February 7, 2005 (x)

May Pang speaking about George Harrison’s confrontation with John Lennon during the Dark Horse tour. This would’ve been on 14 Dec. 1974. From May’s autobiography, Loving John. This story has been posted in the past, but it was without the ending, which I’ve not seen included before.
