I don't know if it's just because I have the most horrible taste in music known to humankind but that playlist isn't actually that bad? I like most of the songs on there
So, I'm constructing the Songs Bill Cipher Would Totally Listen To playlist based on four criteria I've identified for songs I think fit him. For most of the playlist so far, I'm literally alternating 1-2-3-4 through each of these categories:
Literal noise. This might mean sound effects (Shepard tones, sirens, air horns) or might be discordant music that uses these sounds, or might be really experimental music genres, ex: noise music or electroacoustic composition.
60s rock and/or psychedelic music, since the one human song we KNOW he thinks he's good comes from 60s rock. This includes more mainstream selections like Jefferson Airplane, Pink Floyd, and Jimi Hendrix; but also more obscure, more experimental music like Bruce Haack or Joe Meek; but also modern psychedelic rock like Jess and the Ancient Ones.
2000s party music, emphasizing hip hop and heavier EDM genres like dubstep or hardstyle, with a particular focus on songs that could be seen as more "obnoxious"—louder, less melodic songs, oftentimes with lyrics about partying (or lyrics that could be considered pretty obscene) rather than more laid back things about romance and the like. I literally have a couple of tabs open with "most overplayed party songs" and "most overplayed EDM songs" that I'm drawing from, and passing over the ones I don't feel are in-your-face enough. There's also a few memey songs thrown in (Dragostea Din Tei, for instance), but only ones I subjectively feel are widely known.
Piano covers of songs I think he might have learned to play on the piano; popular songs, played in a way that sounds simpler, without as many musical flourishes. (For folks who have played piano and know what I'm talking about here: I'm leaning toward covers that are less legato, not much dynamic range, and lean away from using the sustain pedal, because that's how we see him play in the show.) There's basically no genre consistency to the songs being covered, although I've been leaning toward songs I think Bill might be more interested in lyrically (ex: songs about murders, outlaws)—but even that's not a hard and fast rule.
None of the music is objectively BAD. However:
Category 1 consists COMPLETELY of tracks that either aren't music at all, or else are VERY out-there experimental music most folks would never listen to.
Category 2 has some mainstream music, but then starts sliding into niche obscure 60s acts or niche obscure modern psychedelic acts—and some of those are (deliberately) pretty weird-sounding, too.
Category 3 consists almost entirely of very popular music, BUT very popular music from over a decade ago, and SO popular that a lot of people listening to popular music at the time considered them overplayed. They're songs put on in a club because everyone knows them but also songs most likely to make somebody go "UGH, this song AGAIN???"
Category 4 consists of the most plain piano covers I can find, like if there are two piano covers of the same song I choose the one that sounds more boring to me. If you like a song in category 4 it's probably because you already liked the song itself and so hearing a piano cover is nice—but there's a wide variety of songs being covered in this category, with little uniting them except "they're popular enough to get covered."
Any given song on this playlist is probably good, or at least okay. (Except the William Shatner one.) But: the playlist as a whole is thematically incoherent and discordant. It adds up to less than the sum of its parts.

Gregg Kowalsky - Eso Es - RIYL Japanese electronic New Age of the 90s
Raised in South Florida and trained at Mills College under Fred Frith and Pauline Oliveros, Kowalsky first came to prominence during the mid-2000s as a member of the thriving experimental music scene in the Bay Area, issuing a series of stunning albums on imprints like Kranky and Root Strata and contributing to a reinvigoration of American made Minimalist and electroacoustic music. In an addition to composing solo works, pieces for large ensembles, film soundtracks, dance performances, and site-specific installations over the past twenty years, during the 2010s Kowalsky concentrated his energies as one half of the critically acclaimed duo Date Palms, performing extensively and releasing three hypnotic albums, including 2011’s Honey Devash on Mexican Summer. Eso Es is an album that might not have been; a phoenix from the ashes, born of restlessness and fatigue, that doubles as a poignant reminder that experimental music doesn’t have a fixed aesthetic or “sound.” Returning to Kowalsky's childhood fascination with synthesizers and plunging headlong into the joys of the unknown that drew him toward experimentalism decades ago, the album was composed and recorded almost entirely on a Yamaha DX-7 synthesizer and sequencer both guided by overdriven MIDI data. The album’s seven compositions are the result of an entirely new process for the artist, embracing chance and the organic dialogue between an artist and the limitations and possibilities naturally presented by an unfamiliar instrument. While unquestionably led by a clear sense of process and structure, both were developed responsively, in real time, emphasizing listening as a key element within the act of composing. The resulting lines of shimmering synthesizer and intoxicating rhythms bubble with a gleeful naiveté that often informs the early years of an artist’s practice.

Andrea Ermke & Annette Krebs Fieldrecordings, Mini Disks and Konstruktion#4 Andrea Ermke and Annette Krebs played together for the first time in 2000. Andrea Ermke has been playing fieldrecordings in conjunction with minidisc players and mixers since 1999, developing her own musical style. Annette Krebs played prepared electroacoustic guitar and 4-track recorders in the duo's initial phase in 1999, and has been developing the Konstruktion series since 2013. In the concert she will play the electroacoustic sound sculpture Konstruktion#4, which consists of pieces of metal, strings, objects, microphones, tablets and sensors.
In the duo's music, field recordings of nature sounds, crowds, or machine noises often cannot be clearly separated from the instrumentally played sounds, but they merge into hybrid-seeming, surreal soundscapes.

--------------- Since 2013 Annette Krebs has been developing and performing instrumental assemblages made of highly amplified metals, strings, objects and microphones. These assemblages "Konstruktion#1" to "Konstruktion#4" originally emerged from the need to realize sound visions that could not be played with traditional instruments and setups. Like through a microscope, microphones make audible the finest, otherwise inaudible sound shadings and colorations of the sound objects. The Konstruktion series unites analog and digital techniques and modes of playing. The signals of the manually played sound objects are controlled via tablets, transformed and musically collaged similar to different colors that flow into each other, blend or stay next to each other. Annette Krebs has played numerous instruments since childhood and studied music in Frankfurt am Main. Before she began developing the Konstruktion series, she musically prepared and deconstructed her original instrument, the guitar, step by step. Mat Pogo is a vocalist, improviser, music producer, dj, graphic artist and cartoonist. He has been an active voice on the european underground scene since the early ‘90s. He co-founded the multimedia collective Burp Enterprise and the music label and publishing house Burp Publications, the avant-garde pop band Jealousy Party and DJ collective Sistemi Audiofobici Burp. Based in Berlin since 2006 he’s been part of the improvised music, noise and avant rock scenes collaborating with many international artists in music, performance and dance fields. He performed in international festivals as a solo artist and ensembles. His work has been published by several international labels. Current available projects are Jealousy Party, Voix Magnetiques and Peepholes, besides solo performances and activity as an improviser. At the end of the 2000s, David Sylvian was still compiling drool-worthy line-ups for his solo works – Manafon saw contributions from Fennesz, Otomo Yoshihide, Sachiko M, Evan Parker and plenty of other established names in experimental music. But did that line-up combine to create a record that was actually enjoyable? I’m not sure. A couple of tracks on Manafon(‘Small Metal Gods’, ‘Emily Dickinson’, ‘Manafon’) stack up to Sylvian’s best – a mix of eerie electroacoustic improv and reductionist balladeering – but most feels overly sparse.

Éliane Radigue (born January 24, 1932 is a French electronic music composer. She began working in the 1950s and her first compositions were presented in the late 1960s. Until 2000 her work was almost exclusively created with the ARP 2500modular synthesizer and tape. Since 2001 she has composed mainly for acoustic instruments.
Radigue was born in a modest family of merchants and raised in Paris at Les Halles. She later married the French-born American artist Arman with whom she lived in Nicewhile raising their three children, before returning to Paris in 1967. She had studied piano and was already composing before hearing a broadcast by the founder of musique concrète Pierre Schaeffer. She soon met him, and in the early '50s became his student, working periodically at the Studio d'Essai during visits to Paris. In the early 1960s, she was assistant to Pierre Henry, creating some of the sounds which appeared in his works. As her own work matured, Schaeffer and Henry felt that her use of microphone feedback and long tape loops (as heard in Vice-Versa and Feedback Works 1969-1970) was moving away from their ideals, though her practice was still related to their methods.
The singular work of electronic music pioneer Eliane Radigue is a fountain of inspiration for its stark minimalism and the aesthetic to which she so devoutly ascribes.
She was born in 1932 in France, and studied electroacoustic music in Paris in the late 1950s at an institution called the Studio d’Essai. Known for its creative use of sound technologies and radiophonic techniques, the school had a blooming effect on Radigue’s mind. She studied music concrete under the tutelage of Pierre Schaeffer and Pierre Henry and there began composing with feedback and tape loops.
In 1970, she moved to New York City and worked at New York University’s School of the Arts. There, she first encountered an Arp 2500 synthesizer, which became her signature instrument. She also worked in a studio she shared with Laurie Spiegal on a Buchla synthesizer installed by Morton Subotnick.
Amid the emerging minimalist movement popularized by works of Steve Reich, Charlemagne Palestine, and Phillip Glass, Radigue distinguished herself with compositions that were pure electronic drone, with slowly unfolding sounds like layers of an onion. She later took residence at the electronic studios at the University of Iowa, followed by the California Institute of the Arts in 1973.
Painstaking in her work, Radigue has built her reputation on rejecting the traditional, clichéd sounds and tropes one might expect to come from an electronic instrument. By weaving several compositions together into one via tape machines — a process she details in the IMA documentary below — Radgiue created a series of longer compositions (typically 1–3+ hours in length) that have become her trademark.
In 1974, a group of French students in California encountering her work suggested a similarity between her compositions and Buddhist meditation. Investigating the matter, she found herself deeply drawn to the practice, and in fact took several years off composing. Having found a Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader she connected with, Pawo Rinpoche, she went into retreat with her guru.
At the guru’s request, she returned to music in 1979, and continued working with the Arp synthesizer. She has performed all over the world and has created dozens of compositions, most notably the Trilogie de la Mort, 5 Songs of Milarepa, and Adnos series.
Radigue made the last of her electronic works in 2000, and since 2004 has dedicated herself only to composing for acoustic instruments.
1955–1957: Apprenticeship in musique concrète
Radigue's initial education on electroacoustic music was from composer Pierre Schaeffer, whom she was introduced via radio broadcasts of his music. After meeting him in person through a mutual friend, Radigue started her music education under Schaeffer and Pierre Henry at Studio d'Essai de la Radiodiffusion Nationale in Paris on 1955. At the institution, Radigue was trained on tape music techniques as a part of her education in musique concrète. Radigue described the experience of working in the Groupe de Recherche de Musique Concrète as eye-opening, as it introduced her to the idea that any sounds were able to be considered musical. However, she also described her early music to be paralleled from the practice as both of her educators disfavored electronic music over musique concrète principles.
1960s: Tape feedback
Radigue left Studio d'Essai due to the need to support her children's education. As she lost access to studios and equipment, she pursued music education on classical composition, harp, and piano. In 1967, Radigue reconnected with Pierre Henry and started to work as his assistant at Studio Apsome. During this time, she developed particular interest in tape feedback technique, as it fit her sonic vision of minuscule developments over an extended time. After a year, Radigue resigned and started her professional music career, primarily working within the tape editing medium.
1970s–1990s: Experiments with synthesizers
Around 1970, Radigue created her first synthesizer-based music in a studio she shared with Laurie Spiegel on a Buchla synthesizer installed by Morton Subotnick at NYU. (Chry-ptus dates from this time.) Her goal at this point was to create a slow, purposeful "unfolding" of sound through the use of analogue synthesizers and magnetic tape, with results she felt to be closer to the minimal composers of New York at the time than to the French musique concrète composers who had been her previous allies. She experimented with Buchla and Moog synthesizers before finding in the ARP 2500 synthesizer the vehicle she would use exclusively for the next 25 years in forging her characteristic sound, beginning with Adnos I (1974). After that work's premiere at Mills College at the invitation of Robert Ashley, a group of visiting French music students spoke to her about Tibetan Buddhism, a subject she found fascinating and began investigating upon her return to Paris.
Buddhist influence
After investigating Tibetan Buddhism, she quickly converted and spent the next three years devoted to its practice under her guru Tsuglak Mawe Wangchuk (the tenth incarnation of Pawo Rinpoche), who subsequently sent her back to her musical work. She returned to composition, picking up where she left off, using the same working methods and goals as before, finishing Adnos II in 1979 and Adnos III in 1980. Then came a series of works dedicated to Milarepa,[15] the great Tibetan yogi, known for his Hundred Thousand Songs representing the basis of his teaching. First she composed the Songs of Milarepa, followed by Jetsun Mila, an evocation of the life of this great master; the creation of these works was sponsored by the French government.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, she devoted herself to a singular three-hour work. Perhaps her masterpiece is the Trilogie de la Mort, of which the first part kyema Intermediate states follows the path of the continuum of the six states of consciousness. The work was influenced as much by the Bardo Thodol (aka Tibetan Book of the Dead) and her meditation practice, as by the deaths of Tsuglak Mawe Wangchuk and of her son Yves Arman. The first third of the Trilogie, "Kyema", was her first recording to be released on Phill Niblock's XI label.
2000s–present: Acoustic works
In 2000, she made her last electronic work in Paris, L'Ile Re-sonante, for which she received the Golden Nica Award at the festival Ars Electronica in 2006.
In 2001, on request from electric bassist and composer Kasper T. Toeplitz, she created her first instrumental work, Elemental II, which she took up again with The Lappetites, a laptop improvisation group comprising Antye Greie/AGF, Kaffe Matthews and Ryoko Akama. She participated in their first album Before the Libretto on the Quecksilber label in 2005.
Since 2004 she has dedicated herself to works for acoustic instruments. First with the American cellist Charles Curtis, the first part of Naldjorlak was premiered in December 2005 in New York and later played in 25 concerts across the U.S. and Europe. The second part of Naldjorlak for the two basset horn players Carol Robinson and Bruno Martinez, was created in September 2007 at the Aarau Festival (Switzerland). The three musicians completed the third part of Naldjorlak with Radigue and premiered the complete work, "Naldjorlak I,II,III", in Bordeaux on January 24, 2009. In June 2011 her composition for solo harp Occam I, written for the harpist Rhodri Davies, was premiered in London. Numerous solos and ensemble pieces in the OCCAM cycle have followed.
