Time Lies- 19XX (Chapter 2)
I will not post chapter one on here since it talks a lot about suicide, within the literal first paragraph, and i do not wanna risk getting banned. But, the link for chapter 1 is provided on my page! If someone could read over it and tell me if it’s safe to post on here, that would be greatly appreciated!
Anyways, onto the fic!
Hero awoke in a cold sweat, his pajamas sticking to his back as he sat up. His breaths lay heavy as they echoed in the empty abyss that was his darkened room. Another stupid nightmare. At least it was different this time. Hero looked over to Kel's bed and noticed that it was a mess. The blanket was thrown onto the floor, and his pillow had somehow ended up on the opposite side of the bed. He rubbed his eyes as he slid out of his own, nicely put-together bed. Hero walked over to his closet. With a soft yawn, he peeled off his still-damp pajamas. For some reason, he couldn't find his usual clothing, so he just put on the first t-shirt and pair of pants he saw. He also threw on a pair of shoes, just in case he was going to leave the house. He assumed that his normal clothes were just in the wash. He decided to double-check, just in case they weren't. Sifting through his closet once more, he noticed that all of his clothes looked pretty small. Come to think of it, the shirt he was wearing right now looked small, too. They fit perfectly fine, so Hero decided not to worry about it. Before he left, he decided to quickly fix the mess that was Kel's bed. He assumed he would appreciate that.
Hero walked out of his room and headed down the stairs, allowing his hand to glide over the banister as he descended. Hero entered the kitchen. He gazed over at the clock that was hung on the wall. It read 6:14. He was up pretty early. Against his better judgment, he decided to stay awake since his brother was already out of bed as well. "Hey, Kel?" He yelled for his brother. "You want some food?" He waited for a few seconds before he got a response.
"Sure, whatcha' gonna make?" Kel asked, yelling from the living room. Hero found yelling back and forth quite annoying, so he decided to enter the living room as well. Now that he had entered the room, he could see that Kel was sitting on the couch watching the television.
"Anything you want. It is your breakfast after all!" Hero smiled, despite his brother not looking at him. He was focused on watching whatever show was currently on air. He stared at the screen, interested In what he was watching. "Hey...Is that Scooby-Doo?" He questioned his brother. Kel gave a nod in response, before turning to Hero. "Yup! You've watched it before?" "Well, not recently...but yes." He replied. He hadn't watched that show for...what, three years? "You'd like this episode! It's cool. Maybe we can wat-" Kel cut himself off. "Oh, right! Breakfast! Can you make waffles with the new waffle maker mom bought? Pretty please?" Kel pouted. Hero chuckled at his reaction, before patting him on the head. Hero stopped for a moment after fully processing what he had said. What was Kel talking about? They've had the waffle maker for a few years. Did she get a new one and just not tell him? Why did everything feel so... off today?
"Helloooo? Hero? You there?" Kel waved a hand in front of his face. He realized he had spaced out while thinking about the waffle machine.
"Yeah, yeah. Sorry about that- Waffles sound good right about now. I'll make some for myself, too." He nodded and walked back off to the kitchen. Hero looked at the wall where the calendar was hung. For some reason, it wasn't there. Hero shrugged it off and turned to the fridge, only to realize it was stuck there instead. "Huh...Odd." His mom must've moved it while he was asleep. He moved over to one of the cabinets, looking through them for a bag of waffle mix. He finally found it and placed it on the counter. He took out the waffle maker as well. Everything else from then on was a breeze. Cooking was practically second nature to him, so it was rather easy just to space out while doing it and come back to finished waffles so he did. Hero was once again alone with his thoughts, without anybody talking to him to distract him. He could finally attempt to piece together why everything seemed so different all of a sudden. He glanced over to the calendar once more and noticed that the year was way off. It read 19XX. Three years ago. Did...Did somebody forget to change the calendar? It was becoming harder and harder for Hero to convince himself everything was normal. Hero hesitated for a moment, then looked at the current date. The realization struck hit like a truck. The date was circled in red marker. October 23rd. A single word was scribbled under it. Recital. Oh god. This...this can't be happening. Hero froze, trying to process this information. Was this what Mari meant...? No...He was probably still dreaming. There was no way in hell that he was still awake. Time travel isn't real. He tried to calm down by taking deep breaths. He started to think rationally and assumed that this was just a lucid dream. That explained everything.
It was probably close to the day Mari died in real life, so he was dreaming about it. He knew he had nightmares whenever that date came up, so it made sense. That also explained why he saw her in the previous "dream". Suddenly, a loud beep completely derailed Hero's train of thought. It was the waffle maker. As he spaced back in, he realized that he had already made several batches of waffles without even noticing. Guess it really was second nature to him. He plated the waffles and poured syrup on them.
He took the two plates and walked into the living room. Kel remained on the couch, focused on his show.
"Breakfast is ready!" Hero exclaimed, leading his brother to turn around to receive his plate. He took it, and Hero turned to leave and eat his waffles in the dining room. Suddenly, he felt a tug on his free hand. "Can ya' stay here? I wanna watch the show with you!" Kel beamed. Dream Kel was much more...wholesome than normal Kel. It was funny, in an endearing way. Hero considered it for a moment, before nodding.
"Of course, I can." Hero returned the smile and sat down on the couch. He started eating his food while watching the show as well. Suddenly, Kel spoke.
"So...are you excited about the recital? I bet Sunny is gonna do great!" He looked up at his brother. He nodded in response.
"Mari is probably going to do well, too!" he added.
"Oops, totally forgot about her!" Kel joked while Hero frowned. If only he knew. "Something wrong?"
"No, no...I was just thinking." Hero cartoonishly snapped his fingers as he got an idea. "Why don't we visit Sunny and Mari soon? Maybe we'll see if we can stay over a bit before the recital. Wouldn't that be fun?" Kel's eyes lit up. "Really!? That sounds amazing!" He squealed.
"I figured the recital might be stressing them out, and it would be nice to have some friends over to help them unwind. I'll even bring some of the waffles I made," He said, standing up. "Go get your clothes on, and we'll leave after you’re ready." Kel excitedly scurried off, heading back upstairs to his room. Hero sighed. This was surely an interesting dream. He had never had a lucid dream before, but he didn't expect his first one to be so...tame. It was weird. Kel had a lucid dream once. He explained the dream in heavy detail. It was..much more different than this. The lack of fantasy in this dream was...underwhelming. For a lucid dream, you'd figure it would be a bit more...y'know...fun.  He'd probably keep this one to himself, or confine it to the pages of his journal. Hero shuffled to the kitchen and began to wrap up the remaining waffles in tinfoil. They tasted good. He figured Sunny and Mari would like them.
Suddenly, Kel came barreling down the stairs, excitedly. He wore a similar outfit to Hero. A simple t-shirt and jeans combo. Couldn't go wrong with that. "I'm ready! Let's go!" He cheered. Hero smiled.
"I think that was the fastest I've seen you get dressed in years." He praised his brother for his speed. Kel nodded. "I even got my shoes on!" He pointed down to his feet, proudly displaying them.
"Alright, alright," Hero chuckled. "Let's get out of here." He started for the door, Kel following him.
The walk to Sunny and Mari's house only took a few seconds since they lived right next door. Hero knocked on the door and waited for someone to answer. "Now, Kel, don't be disappointed if we can't stay for long. Today's a really big day for them." Kel simply nodded in response. After a minute of waiting, Mari opened the door.
His vision flashed. All of a sudden, he was in the graveyard again. And...She was crying...He remembered all the nightmares about Mari dying. No...Not again. Please... Hero was on the brink of tears until Mari started speaking.
"Oh, hello boys! Here to visit Sunny?" She asked. He was once again snapped out of his...memories "You could say that, I guess. I mean, we're here for both of you!" Hero smiled before continuing. "I made waffles, by the way." He handed the tinfoil-wrapped stack of waffles to Mari.
"Oh, thank you! I love your waffles... They always come out so good!" She gushed. Hero didn't dare tell her he didn't make this batch from scratch. He usually did, but he was in no mood to do that right now. Can you get tired in dreams? Hero didn't know. This was...one realistic dream, though. "Please, do come in!" She gestured for the two to come inside so they did exactly that. "Sunny! Hero and Kel are here!" Mari yelled to her brother. She directed her gaze at Kel, next. "He's in his room if you want to go hang out with him." Upon hearing this, he ran upstairs, leaving Hero and Mari alone. "I'm...uh..really excited for your guy's recital tonight. You're gonna be great!" He exclaimed.
"I hope so..." Mari gave a slight frown. "We were practicing last night, and Sunny kept getting the notes wrong. I'm scared he's going to mess up during the recital so, I was planning on practicing with him more later." Hero nodded understandingly. He couldn't help but think about what happened at the graveyard...What did she mean? Save her? Did she mean...save her from dying? If that was the case, Hero figured he should try comforting her. He hesitated for a moment, but then decided to at least make an...attempt.   "I just want you to know, I'm always here if you need to talk about something...Like, if you're stressed, or just not feeling good, alright?" Mari smiled. "Thank you, Hero. But I think I'm alright for now. All Sunny needs is a bit of practice. That's all." Welp. He did all that he could. How do you stop a person from killing themselves without telling them that you know they're going to do it? That's just weird. That would also probably mess up his dream. He figured that telling someone they were going to die would be like telling someone they're in a dream; Bizarre.
"So...What now?" Hero raised an eyebrow. He really just wanted to check if she was still alive in his dream. He had no other reason to be here, except for letting Kel play with Sunny. "Well...We could do whatever you want!" Mari paused. "We could even...Uh..." She clearly had no idea what to do either.
"Let's just watch TV. It's an easy way to kill time." Hero suggested. Mari nodded in approval.
"Sure, that sounds fun." She led him to the living room and clicked on the TV. The two sat down and watched the first channel that came on, not bothering to switch it to anything in particular.
After watching TV for a while, Mari glanced at the clock on the wall. "Oh my, it's already three...Sunny and I really need to practice." Mari got up from the couch. She looked understandably annoyed at the fact she wasted so much time when she could've been practicing.
"I'll just...get Kel." Hero nodded. This had to be the most boring lucid dream anyone had ever had. Hero walked to the foot of the staircase. He then cupped his hands around his mouth and yelled, "Kel! We gotta go! Cmon!" Moments later, his brother was coming down the stairs, with a wide grin on his face. He was still saying goodbye to Sunny, who stood at the top of the staircase, not bothering to come down. "That was SO fun! I can't wait for your recital! See ya later!" Kel joined his brother at the bottom of the stairs, and the two started walking to the door. Hero turned around and gave a small wave goodbye to Sunny. Sunny waved back, and Hero continued for the door.
By the time the boys returned home, Hero felt weirdly tired. Once again, he wasn't even sure if it was possible in a dream. "Hey, Kel? I'm gonna go take a nap, wake me up when it's time to go." Hero had already gone up the stairs by the time his brother responded. He completely missed what he had said, but he didn't care to check. The second that Hero got to his room, he made a beeline to his bed. He flopped down on it. Hero questioned why he was so tired, despite barely even moving today. All he did was watch TV. Hero closed his eyes, and immediately drifted off to "sleep".
He was shaken awake after sleeping for what felt like mere minutes. "Alright...Alright...I'm getting up, Kel." He mumbled. When he opened his eyes, he noticed a shocking lack of Kel. Instead of his brother, he saw none other than Mari. "Wh...what are you doing here?" Hero questioned. "Aren't you supposed to be at the reci-" He was once again silenced by Mari putting a finger to his lips.
"Hero. I hate to be so blunt, but there isn't going to be a recital if you can't manage to save me!" Hero raised an eyebrow. "What are you talking about...? You're right here. You're perfectly safe." Mari groaned at his clear misunderstanding of her words. "Did you forget what I told you? You need to bring me back, Hero. You need to stop me from dying." She started to look frustrated. Hero chuckled. "Huh. This dream is finally starting to get interesting!" He smiled, then noticed Mari was glaring daggers at him. She grabbed him by the shoulders and dug her nails into his arm. "Is this real enough for you, Hero?!" She hissed. He yelped in pain, and Mari let go of him. She crossed her arms. She was very obviously pissed off, and this was now very obviously not a dream. Hero had to take a moment to process this. After he did, he freaked out.
"If...If this isn't a dream, what is it..!?" He whimpered. There was a look of pure terror in his eyes. Hero stood up from his bed, and stared at Mari, waiting for an answer. He had noticed something he hadn't before. Mari's skin was...white. Calling her pale would be an understatement. She looked like a...corpse. All of a sudden, Mari's words finally made sense to him. She wanted him to stop her from killing herself.
"Well...I put you in a sort of loop in the past. You've been taken back to the last day that I was alive. And I really need you to figure out how to get out fast. All you need to do is just stop me from k-" She paused, before rephrasing her sentence. "All you need to do is stop me from dying. It's that easy." Hero pursed his lips.
"How do I stop you from killing yourself...? I tried comforting you, and it didn't work. What else do you expect me to do..?" He asked. He had a genuine tone to his voice. He had a single plan, and it didn't work. Mari clenched her jaw.
"I...I think I know how to stop it. But I can't tell you...I'm so sorry..." She shook her head. "You just...You just need to see it!" Hero's face dropped.
"Are...are you serious..? Is that the only way?" Mari nodded solemnly.
"It's the only way for you to understand what's really going on. If I could, I'd explain everything. Just... Go back to bed, alright? You'll wake up in the loop again...I'll try to find a way to help you. I promise." She gently pushed him back onto his bed, and he gave a small nod of acceptance. "Goodnight, Hero." Mari rested a hand on his lap softly, and he once again drifted back to sleep.

If you live in Los Angeles (around 33°52'N, roughly the latitude of Hermosa Beach) the black hole in V404 Cygni passes over you each day. On Christmas Day it will be directly overhead around 2pm.
Under the Stars [Explained]
Transcript Under the Cut
[Megan and Cueball are sitting in a field under a clear blue sky and bright Sun.] Megan: I love sitting out under the stars.
Cueball: ...It's daytime. Megan: Yeah, but the stars are all still up there.
Megan: Constellations wheel overhead; they're just painted over with blue. Megan: Every sky is full of stars.
Cueball: That's somehow terrifying. Megan: It's okay—just look at that sunny sky and tell yourself space isn't real. Megan: "Daytime" is us closing our eyes and pretending it makes infinity go away.
