Hi! Thanks to your recs, I am currently going through Taiwanese BL and I am finding them to be my favorite BL producing country. I wanted to ask if Taiwan gives/has given a BL couple another series. I would really like to see another series for the main leads in WBL and SYAQ but I dont know how possible that is. I observed in Korea they do not give a new series to a couple (at least in kdrama) while in Thailand there is at least a chance if the series does well and the couple is open to another series. I also wanted to ask the same for Japan (my impression is that they are the same as Korea).
Thank you as always for your recs, news, and reviews!
Ah I have a blog post that touches on this:
BL Breakdowns by Country
each country's section talks about the likelihood of a 2nd installment from that country.
Can We Expect MORE of the same?
Series? Same characters + same actors?
Aside from WBL (which I think of as one series, and suspect was filmed back to back) Taiwan has never done a 2nd season. LOTS of cameos tho.
Japan = yes, but usually with their movies. Sometimes other weirdness like Ossan (same cast & story, different settings) or His (series + movie with all new cast) or Boy’s Love (sameish? characters, multiple realities) and Cherry Magic (series + movie).
Korea = just Color Rush 2 so far, and historically they don't do season 2s with regular Kdramas (with a few noted exceptions) so its rare and unlikely: That said To My Star is getting a season 2 (also those leads have been in 2 other Kdrama’s together, not paired up)
The Philippines & Vietnam = sometimes (Gameboys got a 2nd season and a spin-off GL series Pearl Next Door which itself is supposed to get a movie soon.
Thailand = more than they probubly should
Branded pairs doing a new series as new characters but the same actors: like OffGun and MaxTul?
Taiwan has never done that, but I think they might. There was rumor that the leads from Trapped Jake & Chris outright said they’d be game for either a season 2 (or another series), and we all have hopes for Sam & Yu (WBL). I think having the SYAQ? boys show up in a cameo recently is a good sign that they’d be willing too, but that might be optimistic.
But Taiwan has neither the industry nor the funds to do very many BLs. So the stats are against us.
I think, for various cultural reasons, that long running branded pairs will be highly unlikely from Korea (in the style we see from Thailand). Same characters and a season 2 is more likely, and that’s still unlikely. HOWEVER, it’s been announced that the pair from Kissable Lips will be in another BL together. There’s gossip I won’t go into with those actors that makes me not too surprised, but also cautiously optimistic this will actually happen. I think they are GREAT pair who bring good higher heat (for Korea) and I’d love to see them in a BL with an HEA.
Vietnam has done this, same actor pair in various series, quite a few times actually (for such a small industry).
The Philippines has not done branded pairs, to my knowledge (but I am out of touch with the Pinoy stuff).
Japan only for series or linked IPs. (So they are are playing the same characters or a variations on those characters in alternate timelines or realities - don’t ask.)
Thailand, of course, started the madness.
Amended post-pub with info I was reminded about in the comments.

I genuinely believe that Cherry Magic’s international popularity and widespread acclaim will factor into the cultural momentum of Japan’s current consideration of same-sex marriage legalization.
This is why media representation is so important; when Queer characters are portrayed and humanized in accessible media, it is easier for anyone who is not involved in the Queer community to learn about and empathize with us as real people.
Adachi and Kurosawa deserve love, and so do your Queer coworkers, classmates, friends, and community members- some of whom you may not even know are Queer. I have hope that CM is another step in the right direction toward eventual marriage equality in Japan and for Japanese citizens!

Did you hear that cherry magic has a movie coming out this year??
Have you heard much about it? And will you be watching it?
Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?!: The Movie
It's already out. It released last week? 2 weeks ago? To theaters in Japan & Taiwan. No word of international distribution. There's a trailer floating around YT. It's about them negotiating a LTR. I haven't even seen any bootlegs or anything show up grey.
It's the usual twiddle our thumbs and hope Japan distributes it to... someone... at... some point.
I love CM but I am not as wild a fan as many so I can wait until it shows up from an indie subber or on a streaming platform.
