ahhh this is such a good question!! and my ask box is literally always open for anything, i love chatting with y'all <3

this is Not a comprehensive list, just ten great ones that come to mind (plus two bonus ones and a lot of rambling bc, as always, i got carried away).

i've tried to put them in chronological order for the show!

1. a land without magic (1x22)

don't get me wrong, there's a lot of incredible swan queen episodes in season one (the pilot, desperate souls, that still small voice) but the content in finale just does something to me man...

emma pinning regina against the wall, the intensity of the confrontation and regina admitting everything, the way they're instantly a TEAM despite all that fury and heartache because henry comes before anything else, the literal entire sequence paralleling charming fighting maleficent and saving snow to emma fighting maleficent and saving regina, i -

2. broken (2x01)

feel like this a bit of a rogue one since, again, s2 has lots of good stuff, but there's a LOT going on in the premiere! emma promising to protect regina for henry (which we know develops into this kind of sacred oath she fulfils at her own peril over and over throughout the years) and being so attentive to her, saving her from the mob, helping her to her feet, human-shielding her, and the look on regina's face when emma's touch restarts her magic and opens a portal to another realm - the literal requirements for 'true love'. so, so good.

3. the cricket game (2x10)

a classic. emma starting to not only see but fight for the woman regina really is. this strange developing trust and respect, the desire to not be enemies for a brief second before it goes wrong again.

4. and straight on til morning (2x22)

i will never be able to scream enough about the sq development in the s2 finale. regina being the most vulnerable and herself in front of emma, begging her to let her die as herself because she knows she's the only one who could understand and grant her that - and emma not letting her, emma jumping in and finding their shared magic together for the first time to save each other and everyone else. emma speechless, seeing everything regina feels for henry.

also "you might not be strong enough but maybe we are" is one of my favourite swan queen lines, because i think it just sums up the whole ship!

5. going home (3x11)

jumping to the 3A finale, what can i say? once again, as always when it comes to henry, they are a team above all else. the group hugs, henry calling them 'mom, mama', emma being a human shield again, regina whispering her name as she wakes up, ready to give emma everything she ever wanted for herself and their son.

the incredibly intimacy and intensity of their goodbye and all those things unsaid and unfinished between them. *chefs kiss*

6. breaking glass (4x05)

ok so despite the stupid frozen arc, season 4 is actually one of my favourites for swan queen content, bc you have emma promising to give regina a happy ending in the premiere and seeing that all the way through to sacrificing herself for her in the finale. and that's what dreams are made of.

i specifically mention breaking glass bc there's so much sq screen time. emma is gutted that regina thinks she'll never have her back, literally follows her around all episode trying to prove the opposite (in the same way hook follows her around lmao), elsa telling emma not to give up on her.

and there's that gorgeous scene where emma is so honest with her about the two of them having something special and unique and different from what they have with anyone else, and that hopeful 'it's a start' ... i ...

7. operation mongoose (4x22)

what would be a list of top tier swan queen episodes without the climax of all that 'fighting for her happiness' - the saviour sacrificing herself to the darkness to save regina. this was truly the peak of ouat i swear to go d

also lots of nice stuff in the alternate reality with emma, henry and regina!

(before i move on from season 4 i do have to mention bonus episode: lily - emma's super gay fucking backstory, regina telling her she needs her, the first (?) swan queen road trip!, regina talking emma down from shooting lily/beating up that dude because she believes so strongly in emma's goodness)

8. dreamcatcher (5x05)

i remember after this episode came out, there was a post circulating of a bunch of c$ fans saying they were literally worried sq was becoming canon/getting undeniable.

so yeah. everything in this episode is pure gold. the swan mills family dynamics, regina trusting emma with her most painful memory, emma crying over the dreamcatcher, and that deliciously tense argument on regina's porch that was so electric it made sq feel inevitable. ('don't miss swan me, we've been through too much' is another favourite line!)

9. only you (5x22)

swan queen road trip, them being married af the whole time plus regina once again being her most open and vulnerable with emma? what more do you need

10. wish you were here (6x10)

this is another episode i don't think i can ever scream about enough - there's just so much to unpack! firstly, emma becoming enfuriated and attacking the evil queen because she's upsetting regina. secondly, regina thoughtlessly wishing to be sent after emma to get her back. thirdly... emma swan waking herself up from a curse and remembering who she is, sparking her own magic back to life, because even in her most cursed unknowing state she had to save regina mills.

how do you ever get over that (also they're so soft together once emma's awake, i...)

honorable mentions go to

enter the dragon (4x15) - for regina's gay backstory with mal, emma being insanely protective of regina and literally following her around all night super unhappy about her being in danger ('if i see anything i don't like i will come in blazing' oof) all the while regina is doing it to protect emma in return, jesus christ -

birth (5x08) - purely for the scene at the well where regina begs emma to tell her why she's hanging on to the darkness (aka begging emma to admit she loves her, while emma is being super repressed but they both know that's what they're talking about)

i'll be your mirror (5x08) - for all that good married sq teamwork content in the mirrorworld, regina admitting she's scared to raise henry alone and emma promising to always be there and never let anything bad happen, and the softness and tenderness of them watching him dance with violet and realising they've done such a good job together... i'm so weak bruh

“Take a Fall” Chapter 4

Prompt: Ashes

Set between 4x14 “Enter the Dragon” and 4x15 “Poor Unfortunate Soul”. Dragon Queen friendship and mentions of Outlaw Queen.

She frowned at the exhaustion and insecurity she saw in her reflection in the still waters of the lake. She needed sleep but she had to keep her eyes peeled and her guard up if she wanted to be useful and not blow her cover. So sleeping was out of the question. And she missed Henry. Even more than she missed sleep. What she wouldn’t give to see her son, to cuddle him and have him tell her a story, give her hope that she’d get her happy ending one day. Her little prince. Her believer. She yearned to see his face. Maybe she could use the lake’s reflective surface as a mirror and sneak a peak. She hadn’t tried it before but it could work.

She outstretched her hand, summoning her magic, but halted mid-spell. It was too big of a risk. It could reveal dangerous information if somebody saw her. She closed her hand into a fist and withdrew it. She’d have to wait until her job was done before she could see Henry. At least she’d see him unlike-

“Something’s troubling you.”

Regina startled and it took her a few moments to recognize Mal’s voice. “Other than the lack of progress, you mean?” she threw over her shoulder, avoiding Mal’s gaze. She wasn’t lying. She hadn’t had much success in her mission. Yet, it was best to be safe and not risk sabotaging herself.

“Gold is going to break him.”

Regina closed her eyes and let out a breath. That was the other thing that worried her. She had to keep August safe and maintain her cover at the same time. She was starting to wish she’d listened to Emma.

“But that’s not what worries you, is it?”

Her eyes snapped open.

Mal came to stand at her side and Regina could feel her watching her. Like a dragon stalking its prey.

She turned to look at the other woman. “What do you mean?”

“You’re thinking about him, aren’t you?” Mal cut straight to the chase. “About Robin Hood?”

Regina’s lips parted in shock, her body turning a bit more towards Mal, who now had her undivided attention. “How do you-”

“Gold.”

Regina licked her upper lip, processing the information. “Why the hell did he tell you about Robin?” It made no sense. Robin had nothing to do with the author. There was something else going on. She’d had a feeling that something was wrong and it only strengthened now.

“He said that the fresh heartbreak could make you evil again.” Mal spoke, studying Regina carefully. “I guess he was right.”

Normally Regina would notice the bait but her mind was already racing and so was her heart. Her pulse pounded in her ears and red filled her vision. Gold had not only assumed that she would throw all her hard work to the wind and let down everyone who loved and supported her–like he had done–but he was also planning to take advantage of the pain she was in. Again. She could feel the rush of agitated energy under her skin and the fire begging to be let out but the tilt of Mal’s head gave her pause. She was caught red-handed.

“I’m simply doing what I have to to get my happy ending,” she said, trying to remain calm, but that bridge had already burned. “I’m tired of having everything ripped away from me.” She let the pain and desperation of the last few weeks seep into her voice and the mask of composure slip off. “I told you that.”

“You did.” Mal held her gaze for a moment longer and then turned towards the still waters ahead. “So that Robin is your happy ending then?”

Regina welcomed the change of topic–as painful as that one was–and the tension in her muscles eased. She contemplated the question. “He’s a part of my happy ending, yes.”

Mal nodded.

Regina couldn’t tell what was hidden behind the gesture – whether Mal wanted her to find her happiness because of the friendship that used to be between them or simply because she could sympathize, seeing that she was in search of her own happy ending.

“What happened?”

The question pierced her like an arrow. “What always happens.” Regina paused for a moment. “It ended up in ashes.” She chuckled bitterly and shook her head.

“I used to be in ashes too,” Mal spoke calmly as if not talking about her own demise. “Yet here I am now.”

She was right. She was standing right there, in front of her, breathing with lungs that had been burned to crisp and scattered on the floor of a forgotten cavern. She had risen from the ashes like a phoenix and could breathe out fire once again.

“That’s because you’re a survivor,” Regina said with tightness in her throat. She’d been the reason for Mal’s condition. Just like she’d been the reason why her mother had crushed Daniel’s heart. Not Snow. Her. Everything she touched burned down in flames. She was like a wildfire that couldn’t be contained. It had to be put out.

“You’re a survivor too.” Mal turned away from the lake and walked back towards the cabin.

“But the people around me aren’t.” Despite the words, Regina felt a little spark of hope warming up her frozen heart.

Once Upon A Time Rewatch: 4x14 Enter the Dragon

I finished the Once Upon A Time: Reawakened book! I enjoyed it so, so much! I’m definitely gonna read it again. 

Back to the rewatch

Maleficent can do that thing where she teleports without a puff of smoke too! I think so far, we’ve seen Rumple, Peter Pan and her do it.

Holy cow! If someone trapped me as a dragon beneath a library for 28 years, I’d be mad as hell!

Maleficent wants Regina to take a shot to prove she’s still evil loool!

I can’t think where abouts in the timeline this is. I’m guessing it’s straight after Regina banished Cora through the mirror. But then and again Snow looks much older than she did in 2x02 on that horse.

Okay. I am totally forgetting but I thought Regina decided to have Rumple teach her magic to get out of her mother’s clutches. Did she always want it to have her revenge against Snow White?

Wow, parking right in front of a train. Much evil. Very wickedness xD. How does this prove Regina’s evil lool?!

That is utterly bananas though. Is this what the QoD get up to usually? 

Of course, Regina freaking pooled them out of there, what else was she supposed to do?!

It seems Regina has remote teleportation too. Or it could have been tactile teleportation, given she was touching the car.

Oh, so that page with the door is from the original Storybrooke? How did Henry not see that before August took the page out? Maybe he didn’t pay it any mind. It must have been apart of someone’s story though. And for that matter, I wonder why Snow and Charming taking the egg wasn’t in the book. The Author certainly wrote about it. Perhaps the Apprentice took it out because of it was there then Henry would have known. I’m pretty sure he read the whole book. Or maybe he didn’t.

I love Maleficent’s disembodied voice trick. I wonder if that’s in the Sleeping Beauty movie.

I can’t believe they got away with Maleficent basically taking drugs. 

Someone must have really hurt her. Why was she so determined to keep Briar Rose under a sleeping curse? Was she in love with Stefan? Is there another story there? I want to know! Maybe I just need to read the original sleeping beauty fairytale or something.

Horsies! Horsies! 

I wonder if Maleficent or Regina is more powerful.

There is absolutely nothing straight about Regina with Maleficent. You just know there’s a history between them.

What powerful magic are they hiding?

I wonder if they could magically make that car fly!

Why is Killian always so mean to Will? Leave him alone! You were more than a thief once too!

He would enjoy bloodying Will again?? That’s so mean! Will doesn’t deserve this!

Look at that cake. Yumm! I don’t usually like chocolate cake but that one looks nice.

Belle and Will are an interesting pairing. I remember kinda shipping it at first, but I think I’d have to see more of their interactions. Also, Will x Anastasia is my otp forever so it’s hard to see him with anyone else, except maybe Ouatiw Alice. But they were more like brother and sister.

You know what? I have to say, I preferred Maleficent’s season 1 look. 

Actually. I don’t think Mal was in love with Stefan. It seems her anger is at Briar Rose. I wonder what Briar did to her, if anything.

Oh gosh. Kidnapping Pinocchio is so bad. I feel bad for Marco. One minute his kids a boy, next thing he’s a grown man again. But I suppose August would want to be a man again. 

I wonder if Emma’s superpower is magical in nature or if it’s her intuition. That was never clarified.

Aww. One of those horsies is only little. Bless them.

Lucky that shield deflects fire!

Okay, so maybe this is after 2x05, given Aurora’s age. I always thought her younger than Snow but it seems Aurora was put under the curse when she was quite young and when Regina was still quite young, so Aurora was frozen in time for quite a number of years. 

It’s lucky that in 2x01 Mulan said to Aurora, “are you familiar with Regina, the Queen?” and not “Are you familiar with the Evil Queen?” Considering Aurora was put under the sleeping curse before Regina took on that moniker. 

Now I really need to know how old Regina is here. So, Aurora must be of marrying age, which I’m guessing is 16+. I’m gonna say 18. So, Snow is maybe about 18 here, making Regina about 26. Assuming that Snow was around 28 when the curse was cast, that would suggest Aurora was under the sleeping curse for about 10 years! Of course, this could be inaccurate, as Aurora could have been older when put under the sleeping curse, Snow could be older or younger than her and we don’t know if Snow was 28 when the curse was cast. 

Poor Aurora. I forgot Regina watched all of this.

Did Aurora and Phillip ever get married? I’m guessing they did. That must have been painful for Mulan! 

Oh yeah. And then she transfigured Prince Phillip into a yaoguai so he couldn’t give Aurora True loves kiss. So, I guess he didn’t age either.

Oh! Hang on! Has Hook been Rumple all throughout this episode? That would make sense, because, of course, Rumple hates him for having his wife’s affections.

That was clever how they did that, making ‘Killian’ face her, giving us a hint that he’s actually Rumple. And very smart of Rumple.

I can’t believe Rumple is making Belle do that probably made up Pirate’s oath. She looks so uncomfortable. Or turned on. I’m not sure.

Rumple! She could have totally seen you through that window!

Rumple: “How did you get here so soon.” Regina: “on the back of a dragon, how else?” Imagine Regina just riding on the back of dragon!Maleficent. I’m not saying it’s not a straight thing to do but it’s not a straight thing to do.

That poor horsey! He must be in that fiery place! That’s awful! He must be so scared!

Lol. Rumple being swung on the gate xD!

Why didn’t Regina just use that sleeping curse on Snow rather than on the horsey? Not that I’d want that to happen to Snow!

Regina! You can’t let Gold hurt Pinocchio!

Oh my God, Gold could turn him back into a man all along?! Then surely the Blue Fairy could have. I mean, she is supposed to be more powerful than him.
