Dylan Brice Ellis, 22, of Boiling Springs, faced four charges of attempted murder and one charge of third degree arson, according to Spartanburg County jail records.

He was fired by the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office on August 30, after investigators linked him to the August 23 arson in Inman.

Ellis had been with the department 15 months. Ellis, who worked as a jailer, was accused of setting the home on fire at 4 a.m. while a mother, her two children and a second woman were inside asleep.

He confessed to the criminal acts during questioning. “The incident appeared to be motivated by feelings for an ex-girlfriend,” according to Sheriff Chuck Wright.

Evidence appears to indicate that Ellis’ ex-girlfriend did not live at the home, but she is related to the four who escaped.

Bail was not granted upon his initial arrest. He remained in local custody for more than 18 months before being transferred to control of State Department of Corrections.

I can see a boss or parent or bully stating there are no excuses! when a deadline isn’t met, or a project fails, or an error was made, or a line crossed, but they are assuming an excuse is a cowardly way to avoid responsibility.

An excuse is a plea for leniency and understanding in the face of failure or disappointed expectations. An excuse is an explanation, an attempt at mitigation, and often an apology.

If you failed to show up for a meeting or failed a test, for example, an excuse might be that you were ill. If you were ill, then the excuse has merit.

This was Coker’s second armed robbery conviction involving a local business. Coker was previously convicted of armed robbery of a bank in 2015. He served a year in jail for that crime.

On March 29, 2016, law enforcement officers were called to the Kangaroo Service Station in Murrells Inlet for an armed robbery involving two people who wore Halloween masks and gloves. According to police records, a witness saw the suspect leave the store and followed the vehicle until the occupants shot at him. The witness said that no one had every shot a gun at him before. Officers later that day saw the suspect’s vehicle and gave chase before the vehicle stopped at the Denny’s Restaurant parking lot where the suspects jumped from the vehicle and ran into a wooded area behind the restaurant. The individuals were apprehended shortly thereafter.

Prosecutors say the vehicle was registered to Coker and inside of it, officers found Coker’s wallet, cellphone, keys and money.
