THE SHAPE HIMSELF
He grew on me! I never really cared about him before, honestly. Like I didn't get the hype. But I saw ONE specific post about him and I adored it so much that I watched his episodes again and I UNDERSTOOD. I FINALLY GOT IT. He's a great character and I fell in love with his shape and his fuddy duddy attitude. It was a post about how 'surfing is the great western way' and he's the one cooking at the BBQ and catching fish with his bare fucking hands. I love him. I love him so much.
And the 57xx Pannier is so practical it's perfect for him. HE LITERALLY HAS TOOL BOXES AND A TOOL RACK. He's so 🥺🦆 I want to give him a handful of peas but I throw them at him at max speed.
It also helps that he's Auckie's boy, he grew on me because of him too! Such a fantastic character. And now i have a bachmann pannier tank too to model after him!

Introduction Post
Hello, I'm Scorpius!
About me:
I am a chemistry major and a math minor
I am 20 years old
I love space opera and older science fiction as much as I like trains so feel free to ask me about Star Trek, Babylon 5, Farscape, etc.
I also enjoy Thomas and Friends and I am currently getting a thorough rundown of the Railways Series. My favorite character is Duck (Montague) and my favorite character theme is Gordon’s theme from series 2.
My favorite steam locomotive is a GWR 57xx class 0-6-0PT (below is a picture from https://didcotrailwaycentre.org.uk/article.php/65/3738-57xx-class)
Tumblr media
My second favorite is really any Gresely Pacific steam locomotive.
My Favorite Series of the Model Era of Thomas: It's a tie between 3 and 4
My favorite Season of the CGI Era of Thomas: Season 20
About this blog:
As I am an adult and will post the occasional adult-centered topic this blog is 18+.
I post about trains on this blog if that interests you. I mainly post about Steam Locomotives, it is going to take a lot for me to get interested in diesel-powered engines and pretty much any modern freight trains.
This blog is going to be really chill, with no fandom drama or discourse to be found here. I'd like to keep this blog as a safe space that people can interact with about trains. Any posts I make that are outside of that topic will be labeled and sorted with tags as such to keep everything organized.
I will be posting a lot about steam locomotives as well as railways.
I will be posting memes related to trains and Thomas on here if that is your thing too!
So feel free to check out this blog and what it has to offer!

Do they come in litters? What about mass produce engines like class 08s or GWR 57xx?
As a translation of sorts to the "multiple same types of engines" thing, I do have an answer, but it's a bit of a heavy topic.
The railway market works semi-similar to our IRL one in that they do mass-produce product if it's good enough, so this obviously applies to the centaurs and other various creatures that pull the trains as well as any other machine operated industry. I will use Diesel to explain this as he would be the best example. He and the other 08's in this world are werewolves, and the most successful breed. Think of it like nowadays how we breed dogs to be better than the generation before, better immune system, specific coats, you get the idea. That is essentially what happened to the "British canine 08's". When the breeders believe they have landed on the perfect outcome of their intended product, the one they believe they have as a starter is called the "Tester" as opposed to "Prototype". That tester's image is then copied using magic and turned into magical caster/rune/spell/incantation, that can be used more than once. It is then given like an Intracytoplasmic sperm injection to a woman or other species of mythic that will mother the soon to be "product". Essentially, most if not all mass-produced products are born into breeding camps. So I guess to make it short using Diesel as an example, all the 08's share the same "Dad" but most of the time different mothers. Duck is a whole other basket of fruit that I won't get into... yet. But if you have more questions don't be afraid to ask or ask the characters directly, currently, the ones taking questions are- Thomas, Edward, Henry, Gordon, James, Glynn, Hiro, and Sir Topham Hatt.

One of the reasons I wanted to get into 3D printing is because I wanted to make the toys I always wanted as a kid. One might think I'd have tried to do a Godzilla first, but...well, that's something I'm still working toward. But, if it wasn't abundantly clear, I do actually like Thomas the Tank Engine (and steam locomotives in general). I grew up having a bunch of the old ERTL die-cast toys, but I always wanted to have something more detailed, like functional drive rods and such. Well, thanks to my 3D printer, that can be - and has been - arranged.
I modeled these in SketchUp (and Blender, for the face on the bigger one), then painted them up after printing. The small one is about 3.5 inches in length, while the larger one is about 5.25 inches (scaled up 45%). The smaller one's wheels and drive rods technically do move, but the scale at which it's printed makes it rather tight. However, the larger one rolls very freely.
There are still a few kinks to work out, but I'm really enjoying this. And as of this post, I'm in the process of modeling one of my favorite non-American steam locomotives - a certain 57xx pannier tank engine, named after a waterfowl.
I'm so glad I got that printer.

Here are my headcanons of Duck:
-He’s autistic due to his communication issues, speech patterns, repetitive language, trouble with controlling his emotions, feeling uncomfortable in unfamiliar situations, obsession with the sea, and hypersensitivity to touch, smell, and certain loud sounds.
-He might be Jewish due to the way how he speaks in the CGI series and he does have the facial features.
-Before 5750 and the same day as 5741’s built, he was the first 57xx Pannier to be built in Swindon but this all happened without the GWR’s permission. Due to this, he was built with uneven axles. Unexpectedly, he also had a mental disability and he couldn’t speak and understood social cues. He was considered to be scrapped until Cornish workers begged them to give him a chance. The first steam engines which were made by a Cornish man named Richard Trevithick had a lot of issues yet they made history. So they believed he had potential. Anyhow and before 7715, he’s the first 57xx Pannier to work in Cornwall.
-He was not given a number during his GWR days due to his issues
-Since he was a “surprise” engine, he has been through some modifications. Whereas he’s the only 57xx pannier to pull auto coaches. Along with being the only pannier to pull slip coaches.
-7715 is Duck’s younger sister, Jackie who is very spunky and tomboyish. They also have a close bond together.
-He was transferred to Paddington roughly in early 1941 to help out with the damage that was caused from the battle of the Britain
-While he was about to be sent to Sodor, workmen gave 5741’s old number plate to help him feel better

Percy or Gordon for ship meme?
Ah I’ll give you both! And don’t be afraid to ask for more.
~Percy~
Tumblr media
soft boi soft boi soft boi x1000
💞✨OTP✨ 💞:
Huh… come to think of it, I’ve never had an OTP for him, after all these years.
Other Ships That Are 👌:
He and Oliver could be pretty cute, I think. I guess my reasoning for this stems from seeing them together a lot in Season 5 on my VHS tapes growing up. They’re both smol, green, have their cheeky and uppity moments. I imagine they work together a decent amount, as I’ve alluded to on my Twitter: Percy and Oliver are both great for dockyard work with their short wheelbases, and in winter, when the Little Western Branch has less traffic, Oliver gets transferred to Ffarquhar.
I headcanon Oliver being a HUGE flirt, so I’m sure he wouldn’t mind to sweet talk and maybe smooch Percy every so often, with his husband Douglas’ permission of course. (And yes, Douglas lets him.)
Interesting But Fence 👀:
Him and Rosie, or him and Mavis.
Better As Friends 😊:
Him and Thomas, or him and Duck.
In Duck’s case, they’re a big brother and a little brother. Per my headcanon, Duck is just a year older than Percy, being built in 1905, and also not being a GWR 57xx. More on that another time.
In Thomas’ case, he and Percy are best friends, and if you ask me, they’ve had far too many problematic conversations to make a lasting couple. Thomas called Percy ugly, and he put a DESCRIPTIVE EFFORT into it when he did, mama mia.
Meh 😑 / Overrated :
Not much to put here.
It Happened Once In A Dream 🌑 (or AU 🤔):
Percy once had a dream that he and Thomas were courting, complete with fancy bowties under their smokeboxes.
He woke up laughing, and when Thomas found out, it threw his whole day off balance. Oh, the idea of dating him was THAT funny to Percy, eh?! Perhaps he should consider being the world’s first Caterpillar Comedian on Rails >:C
If I Had to Put Them in a Polycule 💗:
Him and Oliver and Arthur.
NOTP 😤:
I guess him and Thomas could also go here. Not much else I feel strongly about.
And now, the big lug:
~Gordon~
Tumblr media
“Trainspotters can be so tiresome. At least you seem to know quality subject matter when you see it.”
💞✨  OTP ✨ 💞:
Again, no particular ship I feel I can especially pin to him. To be honest, I see Gordon as pretty aro/ace. He’s never felt attracted to any other engine, and indeed finds engines romancing as a concept pretty foreign. Therefore, because that’s how his mind works, it falls under the list of things he finds “vulgar,” i.e. any engine, person, or idea that makes him the slightest bit squeamish.
Does Gordon even know the true definition of ‘vulgar,’ I wonder? It’s honestly fun to imagine he doesn’t, ala Thomas’ “Danger means ‘falling down something :) “
Other Ships That Are 👌:
Drawing a blank, here.
Interesting But Fence 👀:
Him and James, I guess, assuming it’s a universe where Gordon isn’t aro/ace.
Better As Friends 😊:
Him and Henry. Like Thomas and Percy, they’ve had far too many toxic moments that they could become a healthy couple, at least in my book. If you like the idea of them paired up, I won’t stop you, though.
Meh 😑 / Overrated :
Don’t really have an answer for this, but I’ll put Rebecca only because she probably doesn’t exist in my series.
Nothing about being against them as a couple, just found this a better spot than none to put it.
It Happened Once In A Dream 🌑 (or AU 🤔):
“It’s not moral,” snorted Gordon.
“What isn’t moral?” asked Edward.
“Letting engines get married.”
“Oh, don’t worry Gordon, BoCo and I would love to marry you! Then it would be quite moral!”
(Gordon never awoke from a nightmare so suddenly.)
If I Had to Put Them in a Polycule 💗:
Him, Henry and Bear, I guess. I figure Bear will whip Gordon into shape when it comes to respecting Henry if he’s to be a part of their unit.
NOTP 😤:
Him and Emily. Emily wouldn’t stand him for a minute. He starts his usual spiel about the importance of his job, and his status over little engines, and she leaves him at the water tower in the style of a woman packing breadsticks into her purse before abandoning a date.

Thomas Headcanons: Duck
Tumblr media
Duck’s real name, Montague, is actually no more official than his nickname. When the 57XXs were being built, there was a practice of giving them unofficial official names, with each batch being named according to a particular theme. Duck, being 5741, was part of the initial batch built in Glasgow in 1929, which were given names to do with the works of Shakespeare. Hence Montague.
As it happened, the name Capulet went to 5742, the next engine in that batch. And yes, Duck did work alongside her at one point - although to this day he most emphatically refuses to talk about the experience, so she couldn’t have been that great.
For most of his early life, Duck worked as a shunter at Paddington. Even at that tender young age, he was always going on about doing things the Great Western way, and this even got on the nerves of his fellow GWR engines - they thought he was rather above himself for being such a small engine.
The nickname of Duck originated after he found himself riding roughly over a worn section of track leading to the carriage sidings. This was observed by a nearby Saint - Duck specifically remembers it being #2905, Lady Macbeth - who remarked that the pannier tank’s rough riding reminded her of a duck’s waddling. Needless to say, the nickname quickly stuck, and Duck eventually grew to prefer it over Montague.
Years later, this nickname also resulted in the dubious tradition of the NWR’s pannier tanks all being named after birds as well. Admittedly they only have three so far - Duck, Raven (NWR #58) and Caneri (NWR #78) - but hey, three’s surely enough for it to count as a tradition, right?
Duck’s arrival on the NWR in 1955 came as a result of of Sir Topham Hatt’s plan to redevelop Knapford Harbour. He intended to reallocate Percy to the Ffarquhar branch to help with the construction work, but this would leave Tidmouth without a station pilot for the first time in over fifteen years. Fearing a repeat of the big engines’ industrial action, Sir Topham Hatt decided to ask BR to send him another engine, and due to his affection for the old GWR - he’d worked at Swindon as a young man - he specifically asked to be sent a pannier tank.
When Duck arrived, he was still painted in BR green livery, with the appropriate cycling lion crest on his tanks. It was only in early 1956 that he was finally repainted into GWR green - albeit a slightly brighter, mintier pastiche. He was also given additional sandboxes around this time.
He’s incorrectly depicted in this livery in Duck Takes Charge, as the reference model had been modified to reflect these changes before being given to the artist.
As shown in canon, Duck spent a few weeks working as a shunter at Wellsworth during the Devious Diesel drama of 1957. He also spent a lot of this time working as a banker, but his Close Shave incident highlighted the need for a full-time banker. Thus, following his redemption and return home, this job was taken over by the newly-arrived Big Bertha (NWR #39). That being said, Duck does occasionally return to Wellsworth to help out when Bertha’s busy elsewhere or otherwise unavailable - hence why he is seen working there in the story Fish.
Up until his reallocation to the Arlesburgh branch in 1967, Duck mostly continued his work as station pilot at Tidmouth, although he did occasionally stray further afield. For example, in 1965 he was temporarily transferred to Crovan’s Gate for a few weeks (hence why he’s seen there at the beginning of Duck & Dukes), while in 1966 he and Percy were called to Tidmouth Docks to help deal with a sudden surge in traffic (as seen in Diesel Does It Again and All At Sea, which I believe took place right next to each other).
When Duck officially took charge of the Arlesburgh branch in March 1967, it was intended that he would work the passenger service alone, with Donald & Douglas taking it in turns to help look after the freight services. Following Oliver’s rescue from scrap, however, the timetable was rearranged to allow both GWR engines to share the workload. In the years since then, the timetable has been adjusted further, so that all four engines are more likely to be seen on either passenger or goods trains.
To begin with, Duck ran the service using a trio of ex-BR Mark 1 coaches, but following Oliver’s arrival, he was instead given a pair of autocoaches - named Alice & Mirabel. I like to think that they were painted in BR crimson and cream, as a homage to the coaches Duck is seen pulling in the TV series.
After a few years, Duck was refitted for autotrain working, so that he could work passenger trains in both directions without having to turn or run around his coaches. In practice, though, this is only really done if the turntable at Arlesburgh should be out of action.

Africa Railways - East African Railways - EAR "Beyer Garratt" type 4-8-4+4-8-4 steam locomotive Nr. 5817 (Beyer Peacock Locomotive Works, Manchester Gorton 7306 / 1949) by Historical Railway Images Via Flickr: 5817 BP 7306/1949 A class of 18 locomotives similar to the pre war 57xx class but with taller cab and boiler fittings. Used on passenger and freight on the Mombasa-Kampala line for their whole life and were the last steam class used on passenger trains between Nairobi and Kampala Initially the taller dome on the 58 enabled them to be differentiated from the similar 57 class but the similarity of boilers allowed interchange between the classes. The class was considered underboilered, the round topped boiler and the heavy steaming necessary on the steep grades lead to priming and high boiler maintenance cost, resulting in the whole class being withdrawn by 1974 The similar 5711 is preserved in Nairobi Railway Museum
