So ER took x-rays and vitals. I have acute inflammation, and it's chronic right now. I refused the muscle relaxers' pillow and the injections since I don't like that stuff, and Mt anxiety makes me feel weird.
They did give me the world's biggest ibuprofen and a doctors note for work. I feel better, BUT I am in aching pain :(

homegrown health literacy part 1.2: WTF is CRP?
hello and welcome back to my series about knowing when your doctors are full of shit! part 1 is about interpreting bloodwork results.
disclaimer: i’m Just Some Guy
CRP is a blood test that measures inflammation. it’s a general test, so it can’t say what chronic or acute condition is causing the inflammation, just that it’s there.
CRP stands for C-reactive protein, a type of protein in your blood. the amount of protein increases during (chronic or acute) inflammation, so a higher CRP indicates more inflammation. this could indicate an infection or an autoimmune disease, but CRP is also elevated during pregnancy. the average CRP for US Americans is estimated to be somewhere between 1 and 2 mg/L.
note: i use the units mg/L throughout this post, which is how CRP results are reported by Labcorp and Quest. some other providers report results in mg/dL, which would change the “normal” range by a factor of 10 (i.e., 0-1.0 rather than 0-10).
when used for cardiac disease screening, CRP results are interpreted as follows:
0-1 lower risk
1-3 average risk
3+ higher risk
a CRP greater than around 5 or 6 may indicate an underlying inflammatory condition. this should generally be followed by repeating the test about a month later, then conducting further screening if the result is still elevated.
while the reference range for CRP is often listed as 0-10 mg/L, meaning a lab report may not flag your result as abnormal unless it’s higher than 10, values lower than 10 can still indicate active autoimmune disease. my CRP was used in diagnosing me with ankylosing spondylitis when it was 8.0, and a range of values above 7 were consistently considered indicative of active disease.
additionally, a lower CRP should not be used to rule out autoimmune disease; as always, there is no one blood test and your doctor should consider the full clinical picture, particularly your symptoms, not just the test results. it’s relatively common to rerun ESR and CRP tests about 3 months later if they didn’t originally indicate inflammation but your symptoms still indicate you might have an autoimmune disease.

Could you share some less common illnesses to use? The prompts keep making me think of cold/flu, which is great, but I don't want to write it all about that. I try to use different things, but I'm stuck in a rut, and I like variety in the sickfics I read and write. My main go-to is chicken pox, and I want to use mumps and meningitis at some point.
We can definitely see how many of the prompts could be interpreted as cold or flu related. And we certainly understand your desire to try something new!
But we also feel like the 'more cake' analogy is worth repeating. There are so many symptoms, scenarios, treatments, home remedies and 'old wives tales' that there is an endless supply of new ways to reinvent any trope! And one great fic definitely deserves another... and another... and another...
That being said, we've put together a list of illnesses/additional symptoms. How you can potentially work them into the various prompts is up to you! But goodness knows, any of them could lead to a few sleepless nights (Prompt 27) Anyway, we hope this helps!!
Acute Pancreatitis is the prolonged  inflammation of the pancreas. Acute Pancreatitis usually appears suddenly and lasts for several days. Although some people may develop chronic pancreatitis, which can last for years. Causes include but are not limited to, infection, alcoholism, certain medications, gallstones, trauma and obesity. Treatment may involve a change in diet, IV fluids, pain medication or in some cases surgery to remove bile duct blockages, the gallbladder or infected pancreatic tissue.
Symptoms include: Upper abdominal pain, abdominal pain that radiates to the back, abdominal tenderness, fever, rapid pulse, nausea and vomiting.
Norovirus is one of the most common causes of vomiting and diarrhea.  In some places it's also referred to as the 'winter vomiting bug' because it's more common in winter, although you can catch it at any time of the year. It usually takes a few days to recover.
Oral Thrush or Oral Candidosis is a fungal (Yeast) infection of the mouth. It isn't contagious and can be treated fairly successfully with antifungal medications. It can be caused by the use of certain antibiotics, poor oral hygiene, smoking or the use of steroid inhalers used for asthma.
Symptoms include: White or red patches inside the mouth, lose of taste, general redness in the mouth and throat, pain and burning within the mouth that can sometimes make eating and drinking difficult. If let untreated, Oral Thrush can become much more serious.
Cellulitis is an infection within  the deeper layers of the skin. It can often be treated with antibiotics. Although more problematic cases can lead to hospitalization. If it’s not retreated properly it can become extremely serious. Cellulitis is usually caused by a bacterial infection that enters the skin via a cut or scrape.
Symptoms include: The affected skin suddenly becomes red, hot swollen and sore. More severe cases can be accompanied or preceded by a high fever, full body tremors, nausea and vomiting, dizziness and confusion.
Urinary tract infections or UTIs  are common and affect the bladder, the kidneys and/or  the tubes that connect  them. They can have varying levels of pain and discomfort depending on the severity. They generally heal within a few days and are often treated with antibiotics. UTIs are usually caused by bacteria entering the urinary tract., generally from the urethra. A few of the causes could be dehydration, the use of scented hygiene products and/or not regularly and fully emptying the bladder.
Symptoms include: Pain or discomfort during urination, having sudden or frequent urges to urinate,  lower abdominal pain or discomfort and a general feeling of achiness. More severe symptoms can occur when the kidneys are involved. Thos symptoms include back pain, fever, chills, confusion and restlessness. It is worth noting that while UTIs can affect anyone they are most common in women.
Vertigo isn’t an illness so much as it’s  a symptom, often associated with migraines and inner ear infections. Vertigo can be described as the sensation that you, or your environment are moving or spinning. The feeling can be barely noticeable or extremely intense and can last anywhere from a few seconds to several days.
Shingles is an infection of a nerve and the surrounding skin. Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes Chicken pox. The main symptom of shingles is prolonged and virtually untreatable pain along with a rash that develops into itchy blisters. New blisters may appear for up to a week, but will become yellowish in color, flatten and dry out within a few days. Blisters can lead to scarring.
Other symptoms include: headache, burning, tingling, numbness or itchiness of the skin in the affected area, feeling generally unwell and/or fever.
Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection that is  spread to humans by infected ticks. Lyme Disease can range from mild to severe depending on how quickly the symptoms are recognized and treatment begins. Although symptoms may not appear for up to thirty days post bite.Antibiotics are the most common treatment.
Symptoms include, most prominently a ‘bulls-eye’ shaped rash around the bite area that may increase in size over time. Some people will develop a rash over their entire body. One in three people affected by Lyme Disease will also have flu-like symptoms such as, fever, aches and pains, a stiff neck and fatigue. If left untreated, symptoms can progress to include swelling and pain in the joins, numbness in the limbs, lasp in memory, and heart issues.
Acute Cholecystitis is when there is swelling and inflammation in the gallbladder. This is potentially serious and usually needs to be treated in hospital. Treatment includes fasting, intravenous fluids and pain management. The doctor may recommend the removal of the gallbladder to prevent future attacks.
Symptoms include: Most prominently, a sharp pain in the lower right side of the abdomen that spreads towards the shoulder. The affected part of the abdomen is usually sore to the touch, and does not fade over time. Deep breathing may  increase the pain. Other symptoms may include fever, sweating, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting and  yellowing of the skin and/or whites of the eyes (jaundice)
Catarrh is also a symptom rather than an illness. Catarrh is  the build-up of mucus in an airway or other cavity within the body. Generally the back of the nose, throat or sinus. It’s usually temporary and is associated with colds, allergies and sinus polyps.  It usually only last a few days but in some situations can become chronic and hard to treat. Treatments include avoiding allergens, taking sips of cold water, the use of a  humidifier, saline nasal rinses, and over the counter decongestants.
Associated symptoms include: coughing, runny nose, stuffy nose, the feeling of mucus in the back of the throat, the need to constantly clear your throat, headache or facial pain, a cracking sensation in the ears accompanied by some temporary hearing loss (This could also lead into an ear infection, particularly in small children)
Mumps is a contagious viral infection that used to be common in children (but could also affect adults)  before the introduction of the MMR vaccine.
symptoms include: Most prominently, painful swelling around the side of the face (The parotid glands) along with headaches, joint pain and a high temperature, which may develop a few days before the swelling occurs.
We found this website to be very helpful when compiling the list above. It not only lists common illnesses but additional symptoms as well.

Is Twilight really okay?
So I see tons of folks bring up how they are feeling sus out by if twilight is truly okay
No. He’s not okay, yet.
Warning: discussion of illnesses and injuries.
I get why folks are quick to be Sus of how twilight is. I will sort of explain this the best way I can. Using my own personal experience of what going okay. But note I am not invalidating anyone feelings on their thoughts of twilight and his finally seeming to be recovered.
I can say, I think he was given as much healing as they can provide him. He is not fully 100%. He probably got enough healing he can get. Over time it will heal more. However he is most likely poisoned by dink’s blade. But his wound will never truly heal. He will suffer from it till he last days. Something a lot like what Happened to Frodo in the Fellowship of the Ring. In the end Frodo does die once their task was completed and evil was banished from the land. I suspect this how it will got for Twilight.
More on a personal level, I suffer from chronic pancreatitis*. So I sympathize with how Twilight must be feeling. The aches and pains are unimaginable. However I kept going. Weakness can be strengthened slowly at my own pace. Which what he will have to do. You don’t just drink a potion, get heal with a life spell and can be spring chicken. It takes time. As we can see. There will be a struggle and frustration at every corner cause you want to not be a burden to anyone and be able to function the way you use too. The trauma of it will over time heal as well. He will have to relearn to do things. He won’t be able to fight the way he has done. Rest and recovery is a must. Not pushing too hard. Twilight and Time being related- they both share a stubbornness. So emotionally he will lash out a bit (or not). So I sort of get how Twilight must and will feel.
I know people are quick to be like “angst, angst, angst.” But I think people don’t understand there’s something much deeper to a wound that won’t fully heal, but heals enough. It will be a chronic thing for him. Could he maybe get turned into a puppet for dink and turn on the chain. Maybe, but let’s be more logical and see it as he just won’t be fully healed. However he will continue to fight till their adventure ends and dink is defeated properly. So you are all valid in not trusting him being okay. It just may not be how angsty as you think. Just simply he will never be 100% and that now his struggle will be to learn to handle is medical situation and work around what he can and can not do any longer.
He will still be a down tight magnificent fighter, good hearted gent he is. How just now in a new phase in his situation where he will have to come to terms with his limitations. Which mentally is often hard to come to terms with. For me, I can’t eat a lot of my favorite stuff and knowing when I need to take it easy. Something along those lines. It’s an emotional, physical and mental journey. Which we will be watching as the comic progresses.
That’s my take on how he is and what we will expect as the comic progresses. More then welcome to disagree and think more into things. This just my own view of where things may go.
[* Chronic pancreatitis is similar to acute, but in this case, the inflammation is long-term and won’t get any better. In fact, over time, it tends to get worse and lead to permanent damage.
Chronic pancreatitis will often develop after an episode of acute pancreatitis has already occurred.

"How to Combat Inflammaging, the Aging Side Effect No One Talks About"
Article Date: April 7, 2024.
Article Excerpt:
It may sound like a made-up word, but “inflammaging” is a medical term coined more than 20 years ago to describe the chronic inflammation that happens in our bodies as we get older. “It’s a word that combines ‘aging’ and ‘inflammation’ to describe a low-level inflammatory process,” says Linda Herrmann, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor and aging expert in the Division of Advanced Nursing Practice at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. “It’s systemic throughout the body, but occurs in the absence of an acute illness or injury.”
[...]
It turns out that inflammaging is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, kidney disease, diabetes, cancer, depression and dementia. “The rise in rates of these conditions are the by-products of a longer life span,” says Nicole Ehrhart, V.M.D.,
[...]
Potential triggers may include genetic susceptibility, obesity, changes in the microbiome and chronic infections.
Another cause seems to be cellular senescence, which is when cells stop replicating, but they don’t die. “Instead, they go into a sort of ‘undead’ state, secreting inflammatory factors and inducing neighbor cells to do the same,” says Ehrhart. [...]
“as we age, our immune system gets less specific to what it’s reacting to. After a while, this cumulative sort of chronic response actually becomes this low-grade chronic inflammation,” says Ehrhart. “It doesn’t’ function like it used to when we were younger.” The result is inflammaging. [...]
How can you prevent inflammaging? [...]
Get moving
Work on your balance
"Eat right"
Manage stress
Spend quality time with others
Get good sleep
[Note: more information in article, take with a bit of skepticism - "a grain of salt"]

About that chronic pain...
Doc ordered X-rays of my lower back, because we're seriously considering that I may have ankylosing spondylitis. We were honestly expecting the x-rays to come back with nothing remarkable, because you have to have the disease for about 10 years before it starts to show up on the x-rays.
Got the x-rays today. Report just showed up.
Findings: Vertebral body heights are maintained. Lumbar alignment is anatomic. No acute displaced fractures. Mild disc height loss noted at L3-L4 and L4-L5. Multilevel facet degeneration is noted, most significantly in the lower lumbar segments. Soft tissues are grossly unremarkable, with surgical clips in the right upper abdominal quadrant. Conclusion: Relatively mild multilevel lumbar spondylosis, most significantly involving the lower lumbar segments. If symptoms persist, consider CT or MRI for further characterization.
So ummm... I guess all those years of my "back going out" and subsequently being unable to walk for days after the incident (I would discover after years that if I aggressively treated with around the clock ibuprofen, and did massage to loosen my muscles, I could keep myself walking... barely), was probably not connected to the "injury" I sustained at 19 years old? Might even be that the "injury" I got at 19 was actually a flare triggered by placing too much stress on my spine.
Go. Fucking. Figure.
I'm laughing at the frustration, at being right, AGAIN, at what is wrong with me. Can I please shove this in the face of every doctor that ever doubted me and blamed my pain on my weight?
Also, newsflash, assholes. Chronic inflammation makes people gain weight.
I'm pissed that I'm right. Again. And grateful someone finally listened.
Anyway. End rant. At least until the official diagnosis comes back, but all signs point to ankylosing spondylitis.

The Air We Breathe: Investigating the Factors Contributing to Bronchitis
For the past few weeks, you've been plagued by an unrelenting cough, as if your lungs are perpetually congested. Despite your efforts, clearing your throat seems futile. What's the reason behind this discomfort? It could be bronchitis. Join us in this blog as we explore the definition of bronchitis, its underlying causes, and effective strategies to manage its symptoms.
What Is Bronchitis?
When an individual experiences bronchitis, it means that the lining of their bronchial tubes, which are responsible for carrying air to and from the lungs, becomes inflamed and can accumulate mucus. It's important to note that there are two types of bronchitis: acute, which is short-term, and chronic, which is long-term.
It's worth mentioning that bronchitis itself is not contagious. However, the viruses that can lead to bronchitis can be contagious. For example, if someone contracts the flu and subsequently develops bronchitis, they can potentially transmit the flu virus to another person. Whether or not that person will also develop bronchitis depends on various factors.
What Do The Symptoms Look Like?
The inflammation of the airways can result in the following symptoms:
Coughing, accompanied by the production of mucus.
Dry cough.
Runny nose.
Wheezing.
Shortness of breath.
Chest pain or discomfort.
Fatigue.
Mild fever (100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or below) or chills.
Regardless of whether an individual is dealing with acute or chronic bronchitis, the symptoms may appear similar. However, those of acute bronchitis typically resolve on their own within approximately two to three weeks. Long-term consequences are rare, though the cough may persist slightly longer than other symptoms. For some, it resembles a common cold and may not require treatment.
In contrast, symptoms of chronic bronchitis can persist for three months or more. For many individuals, it becomes a long-term management issue as it can recur intermittently.
What Causes Bronchitis?
The causes of acute and chronic bronchitis differ significantly.
Acute bronchitis is typically triggered by viral infections such as colds, the flu, or COVID-19. Occasionally, bacterial infections may also provoke it, though this is rare.
Conversely, chronic bronchitis is often a symptom of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and may also coexist with conditions like emphysema and asthma.
Several risk factors can heighten the likelihood of developing chronic bronchitis, including smoking (or exposure to secondhand smoke), air pollution, a history of COPD or respiratory illnesses, GERD, any condition causing inflammation, and age.
How To Manage That Frustrating Cough
Though bronchitis isn't usually life-threatening, it can certainly cause discomfort. So, what steps can be taken to alleviate its effects?
First and foremost, a visit to the doctor is essential. A healthcare professional may recommend over-the-counter or prescription medications to alleviate bronchitis symptoms. However, what else can individuals do to take proactive steps toward their health and minimize persistent coughing?
Since airborne particles can aggravate the airways, exacerbating bronchitis symptoms, reducing indoor air pollution can help alleviate coughing. While controlling outdoor air quality might be challenging, managing indoor air quality is within our control, especially considering that we spend about 90% of our time indoors.
If you're inspired to take action after reading this blog, here are a few suggestions:
Use An Air Purifier
Opt for an air purification system equipped with a medical-grade HEPA 13 filter, renowned as the most potent type. This filter should form one layer within a multi-layered technology, ensuring comprehensive particle capture, from large to microscopic.
Advanced systems operate autonomously, adjusting as needed. They continually monitor real-time air quality and alert you when filter replacement is necessary. These devices boast exceptional efficacy, capable of eliminating 99.97% of airborne particles.
An air purifier effectively targets common airway irritants, including pet fur and dander, dust mites, mold, and smoke from various sources such as smoking and wildfires.
Clean Your Home Regularly
While an air purifier can significantly improve indoor air quality, maintaining cleanliness in your living spaces can enhance its effectiveness.
High-traffic areas may require daily cleaning. Ensure to wipe down frequently touched surfaces such as countertops, computer equipment, coffee machines, and microwaves. Rooms frequented by people or pets should be vacuumed and mopped regularly.
Regarding pets, it's advisable to restrict their access to furniture like couches and beds. Not only do they shed fur and dander, which can exacerbate allergies and respiratory issues, but they also track in germs from outside.
To mitigate this, designate a spot for de-shedding your pets and vacuum promptly afterward. Additionally, avoid wearing outdoor shoes indoors to prevent bringing in external contaminants.
Use A Humidifier (If Needed)
Low humidity can exacerbate airway irritation. If you reside in an exceptionally dry environment, a humidifier may alleviate bronchitis symptoms by increasing indoor moisture, facilitating easier breathing.
However, moderation is key. The optimal indoor humidity level falls between 30% and 60%.
It's important to note that a humidifier should not be seen as a substitute for an air purifier; they serve distinct purposes. Similarly, heating and air conditioning systems do not purify the air or regulate humidity levels. Nonetheless, regular filter changes are crucial for their optimal performance.
Living With Bronchitis
Acute bronchitis typically resolves spontaneously. However, if you suspect chronic bronchitis, it's crucial to consult your healthcare provider before taking any action.
To maintain pristine indoor air quality, consider running an air purifier equipped with a medical-grade HEPA 13 filter, adhere to a regular cleaning routine, and in dry climates, utilize a humidifier to increase air moisture.

Learn About Cortisol: The Body’s Stress Response Regulator
Tumblr media
Cortisol is a steroid hormone that helps in regulating the human body’s stress response. Which is why it is also sometimes called a “stress hormone”. Cortisol also affects several other aspects of the human body and is produced and released by two adrenal glands that sit on the top of each kidney.  Apart from regulating the body's stress response, cortisol also plays a significant role in metabolism to increase the production of blood sugar. The role of cortisol is to also help convert body fat, carbohydrates, and proteins into energy that can be used effectively as a part of the human body’s fight-or-flight response during stressful situations.
Now, in this piece, we will be discussing more in detail about cortisol, its functions in the human body, and how its levels can affect your health.
What is Cortisol And What Does it Do to a Human Body?
Cortisol is a glucocorticoid hormone produced by the adrenal glands in your body. It is found in both men and women and its function is to suppress inflammation in your tissues, skin, muscles, and organs. As a glucocorticoid hormone, it also controls metabolism in your body and affects your sleep and wake cycles. As an important part of your endocrine system, cortisol affects almost every part of your body in its functioning. Here’s a look at the most common functions of cortisol in your body.
Cortisol helps in the regulation of blood pressure
It helps in the management of blood sugar levels
It controls the sleep-wake cycle of your body otherwise known as the circadian rhythm
Cortisol helps in the regulating of your body’s stress response
It helps suppress inflammation in tissues, skin, organs, and muscles
Lastly, cortisol helps manage metabolism in your body and how it synthesizes fats and carbohydrates
Cortisol: Stress Hormone
So why is cortisol known as the stress hormone? Cortisol is directly related to your body’s stress response system. It is known as the stress hormone because it is released by the adrenal glands any time your body faces any type of stress. To be precise, there are three types of stress namely that cause the release of cortisol in your body most commonly. Let’s review these three types of stress and their effects on your health.
Traumatic Stress: Traumatic stress refers to any stress that’s triggered by any traumatic event in your life. From losing somebody to a personal tragedy, the trigger of traumatic stress can differ for everyone. If left untreated, traumatic stress can surface as mental health conditions like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). You must seek help for this type of stress and opt for medical treatment, if required as it can lead to significant health problems, if left untreated.
Acute Stress: Acute stress is a condition where you are put under a lot of stress in a very short period. The levels of acute stress can differ from person to person. Situations that qualify for contributing to acute stress include being chased by animals or having a near-death experience. It is important to note that while acute stress can cause a spike in cortisol levels in your body. The levels, however, gradually return back to normal over time, if the trigger of stress is not present anymore.
Chronic Stress: Chronic stress refers to any type of stress that persists for a long period and causes a consistent spike of cortisol in your body leading to health problems across the board. Situations like problems in your life, work, and chronic illnesses can lead to chronic stress, which is one of the most harmful types of stress for your health.
Effects of High Cortisol Levels
If your body has high levels of cortisol it indicates that your body is set in a fight or flight mode, which reduces your metabolism levels. Apart from that, high levels of cortisol in your body can cause long-term damage to your health. High levels of cortisol can also be indicative of conditions like Cushing’s syndrome. Here are some of the most common symptoms of high levels of cortisol in your body.
Symptoms of High Cortisol Levels
Sudden weight gain in your abdomen and face
Symptoms of high blood pressure or hypertension
Uncontrolled levels of blood sugar, which may lead to type 2 diabetes
Symptoms of osteoporosis
Weakness in the muscles of your thighs and upper arms
Fatty deposits in between your shoulder blades
Effects of Low Cortisol Levels
Lower than normal levels of cortisol in your body can be indicative of autoimmune conditions. Most commonly Addison’s disease is attributed to causing low levels of cortisol. Another condition that’s closely related to causing low cortisol levels is hypopituitarism. Let’s review some of the most common symptoms of low cortisol levels.
Symptoms of Low Cortisol Levels
Loss of appetite and inability to eat
Low blood pressure
Fatigue and lack of energy

The Lifesaving Ally: Understanding the Rescue Inhaler
Tumblr media
In the realm of respiratory health, few tools are as crucial and immediate as the rescue inhaler. This small device, often carried by individuals with asthma or other respiratory conditions, holds the power to swiftly alleviate breathing difficulties and potentially avert serious health crises. Understanding the rescue inhaler, its function, and its significance in managing respiratory conditions is vital for both patients and caregivers alike.
What is a Rescue Inhaler?
A rescue inhaler, also known as a reliever inhaler or bronchodilator, is a handheld device that delivers a medication called a bronchodilator directly into the airways. These medications work by relaxing the muscles around the airways, opening them up and making it easier to breathe. They are primarily used to provide quick relief from symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing, typically associated with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Components of a Rescue Inhaler
Most rescue inhalers consist of a canister containing medication and a plastic actuator or mouthpiece. The medication is stored under pressure in the canister, and when the inhaler is activated, a measured dose is released as a fine mist or spray, which is then inhaled into the lungs.
Types of Medications
The most commonly used medications in rescue inhalers are short-acting beta agonists (SABAs). These include drugs such as albuterol (Ventolin), levalbuterol (Xopenex), and terbutaline. SABAs provide rapid relief of symptoms by quickly relaxing the muscles in the airways, making breathing easier within minutes of inhalation. They are often the first line of treatment during an asthma attack or flare-up.
Occasionally, rescue inhalers may also contain other medications such as ipratropium bromide, which works as an anticholinergic agent, helping to further relax the airways and reduce mucus production.
When to Use a Rescue Inhaler
Rescue inhalers are typically used on an as-needed basis to relieve acute respiratory symptoms. They are most commonly used:
During Asthma Attacks: When experiencing sudden onset symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, or shortness of breath, a rescue inhaler can provide rapid relief and help prevent the escalation of symptoms into a full-blown asthma attack.
Before Physical Activity For individuals whose asthma is triggered by exercise (exercise-induced bronchoconstriction), using a rescue inhaler prior to physical activity can help prevent or minimize symptoms during exercise.
In Response to Triggers Certain environmental triggers such as pollen, dust, smoke, or strong odors can provoke asthma symptoms in susceptible individuals. Using a rescue inhaler when exposed to these triggers can help alleviate symptoms.
It's important to note that while rescue inhalers provide quick relief from symptoms, they do not treat the underlying inflammation associated with chronic respiratory conditions like asthma. For long-term management, individuals may require additional controller medications, such as inhaled corticosteroids, to reduce airway inflammation and prevent future exacerbations.
Proper Inhaler Technique
Using a rescue inhaler correctly is essential to ensure effective delivery of medication to the lungs. Proper technique includes:
Shake the Inhaler Before each use, shake the inhaler to ensure that the medication is evenly distributed.
Prepare the Inhaler If using the inhaler for the first time or after a prolonged period, prime it according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Breathe Out  Exhale completely to create space in the lungs for the medication.
Inhale Medication: Place the mouthpiece between the lips and form a tight seal around it. Activate the inhaler while simultaneously inhaling deeply and slowly.
Hold Breath Hold your breath for 10 seconds or as long as comfortable to allow the medication to reach deep into the lungs.
Exhale Slowly: Breathe out slowly and steadily.
Wait Before Repeat Dose: If a second dose is needed, wait at least 1-2 minutes before repeating the process.
In the world of respiratory health, the rescue inhaler stands as a beacon of hope, providing swift relief to those grappling with breathing difficulties. Its compact design belies its immense importance in managing respiratory conditions such as asthma and COPD. Understanding when and how to use a rescue inhaler empowers individuals to take control of their respiratory health, potentially averting serious complications and improving quality of life. With proper education, support, and access to medication, the rescue inhaler remains a steadfast ally in the ongoing battle for breath.

Navigating Hepatitis: Unveiling Types, Symptoms, and Prevention
Tumblr media
Hepatitis is a global health concern affecting millions of people worldwide. This inflammatory condition of the liver can be caused by various factors, including viral infections, toxins, and autoimmune diseases. Doctors from Vedam Gastro Hospital, one of the best gastro hospitals in Surat, have shared a comprehensive guide into the different types of hepatitis, their symptoms, and explore preventive measures to safeguard your liver health.
Understanding the Types of Hepatitis
Dr Ronak Malani, one of the best gastro surgeons in Surat, says that different types of hepatitis have different causes and characteristics. The most common types include:
1. Hepatitis A (HAV): Often transmitted through contaminated food or water, Hepatitis A is a viral infection that targets the liver. Symptoms may range from mild to severe but are typically acute, and the infection does not become chronic.
2. Hepatitis B (HBV): Hepatitis B is a viral infection that spreads through contact with infected blood, bodily fluids, or from an infected mother to her new born during childbirth. While many cases resolve on their own, some individuals may develop chronic hepatitis B, increasing the risk of liver complications.
3. Hepatitis C (HCV): Hepatitis C is primarily spread through contact with infected blood and can lead to chronic liver disease. Many people with Hepatitis C are unaware of their infection until they develop severe liver damage.
4. Hepatitis D (HDV): This type of hepatitis only occurs in individuals who are already infected with Hepatitis B. Hepatitis D is a co-infection that can worsen the symptoms and complications of Hepatitis B.
5. Hepatitis E (HEV): Similar to Hepatitis A, Hepatitis E is usually transmitted through contaminated water. It is most common in areas with poor sanitation and can cause acute liver infection.
Symptoms of Hepatitis
The symptoms of hepatitis can vary depending on the type and stage of the infection. However, Dr. Pravin Borasadia, one of the best stomach specialists in Surat, shares some common signs:
1. Jaundice: A yellowing of the skin and eyes is a classic symptom of hepatitis, indicating liver dysfunction.
2. Fatigue: Individuals with hepatitis often experience persistent fatigue and weakness.
3. Abdominal Pain: Discomfort or pain in the upper right abdomen may occur, signalling liver inflammation.
4. Nausea and Vomiting: Digestive issues, including nausea and vomiting, can be associated with hepatitis.
5. Dark Urine and Pale Stools: Changes in urine colour (darkening) and light-coloured stools may be indicative of liver problems.
6. Flu-like Symptoms: Some individuals with acute hepatitis may experience symptoms resembling the flu, including fever, muscle aches, and headaches.
It’s crucial to note that not everyone with hepatitis exhibits noticeable symptoms, especially in the early stages of the infection. Some individuals may carry and spread the virus unknowingly, underscoring the importance of screening and preventive measures.
Prevention of Hepatitis
We at Vedam gastro hospital, being one of the best gastro hospitals in Surat, advocate that preventing hepatitis involves a combination of vaccination, adopting safe practices, and raising awareness. Here are key preventive measures:
1. Vaccination: Vaccination is available for Hepatitis A and B. Getting vaccinated is a highly effective way to protect yourself from these viral infections. Vaccination is particularly recommended for individuals at higher risk, such as healthcare workers, travellers to endemic regions, and those with certain medical conditions.
2. Practice Safe Hygiene: To prevent the spread of hepatitis, practice good hygiene, including regular handwashing with soap and water, especially after using the restroom and before handling food.
3. Safe Sex Practices: Engage in safe sex practices, including the use of condoms, to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections, including Hepatitis B.
4. Be Cautious with Needle Use: Avoid sharing needles or other injection equipment. If you use drugs, seek help to quit or use clean, sterile needles to minimize the risk of hepatitis transmission.
5. Food and Water Safety: In regions where Hepatitis A and E are prevalent, practice caution with food and water consumption. Consume only properly cooked and sanitized food and drink bottled or boiled water.
6. Screening and Early Detection: Regular screening is essential, especially for individuals at higher risk. Early detection allows for timely intervention and can prevent the progression to chronic hepatitis and associated complications.
7. Mother-to-Child Prevention: Pregnant women with hepatitis B can take steps to prevent mother-to-child transmission. New born babies should receive the hepatitis B vaccine and hepatitis B immune globulin shortly after birth.
Conclusion

Hot and Cold Therapy: Your Key to Effective Pain Relief, Swelling Reduction, and Improved Blood Flow
Tumblr media
In a world where pain, swelling, and reduced blood flow often hamper our daily lives, finding effective solutions is crucial. One such solution that has stood the test of time is hot and cold therapy. This natural and non-invasive method uses temperature variations to alleviate pain, reduce swelling, and enhance blood flow. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the benefits and applications of hot and cold therapy, along with helpful tips to maximize its effectiveness. So, let's dive in! Section 1: Understanding Hot and Cold Therapy Hot and cold therapy, also known as contrast therapy, involves the precise application of heat and cold to treat various ailments. The therapeutic effects of temperature variations have been recognized for centuries. Both hot and cold temperatures work by triggering physiological responses in the body, leading to pain relief and improved healing. Section 2: Hot Therapy for Pain Relief and Swelling Reduction Hot therapy, usually applied using heat packs, warm towels, or warm water, is ideal for alleviating muscular or joint pain. Here's how it works: 1. Increased blood flow: Heat stimulates blood vessels, causing them to dilate and enhance blood flow. This increased circulation helps deliver oxygen, nutrients, and immune cells to the affected area, promoting faster healing. 2. Muscle relaxation: Heat therapy promotes muscle relaxation by reducing muscle stiffness and tension. It also helps in easing muscle soreness and improving flexibility. 3. Pain relief: The warmth from hot therapy has a soothing effect on the nerves, reducing pain signals sent to the brain. Additionally, the release of endorphins, natural pain-relieving chemicals, further enhances the analgesic effect. Hot therapy is recommended for chronic conditions like arthritis, muscle spasms, and menstrual cramps. However, it is not suitable for fresh injuries or inflammation as heat can increase swelling in such cases. Section 3: Cold Therapy for Pain Relief and Swelling Reduction Cold therapy, often applied using ice packs, cold compresses, or ice baths, can effectively reduce pain and swelling. Here's why cold therapy works: 1. Decreased blood flow: Cold temperatures constrict blood vessels, reducing blood flow to the affected area. This constriction helps minimize inflammation, swelling, and bruising. 2. Numbing effect: Cold therapy temporarily numbs nerve endings, providing immediate pain relief. It also slows down nerve impulses, reducing spasms and easing discomfort. 3. Anti-inflammatory properties: Cold temperatures help inhibit the release of inflammatory substances, thereby limiting inflammation and its associated pain. Cold therapy is particularly beneficial for acute injuries, such as sprains, strains, and bruises. It is important to note that prolonged exposure to extreme cold may damage tissues, so proper precautions should be taken. Section 4: Combining Hot and Cold Therapy for Optimal Results While both hot and cold therapies offer unique benefits, combining them can yield even better outcomes. Known as contrast therapy, this method alternates between hot and cold applications. The temperature contrast causes blood vessels to undergo rhythmic constriction and dilation, which can: 1. Enhance blood flow: The alternating temperatures encourage a "pump" effect, stimulating blood circulation and bringing fresh oxygen and nutrients to the area. 2. Reduce swelling: The constriction caused by cold applications helps limit swelling, while the dilation caused by heat aids in the removal of waste products and toxins. 3. Provide pain relief: The back-and-forth between hot and cold temperatures helps desensitize nerve endings and disrupt pain signals. Using contrast therapy can be as simple as applying a warm compress for a few minutes, followed by a cold pack, and repeating the sequence several times. This technique is effective for both chronic and acute conditions. Conclusion: Hot and cold therapy is a versatile and accessible method for pain relief, swelling reduction, and improved blood flow. By understanding the benefits and applications of hot and cold temperatures, you can harness their healing powers effectively. Whether you choose hot therapy, cold therapy, or a combination of both, rest assured these natural remedies can provide significant relief from various ailments. 1. Hot and Cold Therapy 2.
