Albert Edelfelt (Finnish 1854-1905) Boys Playing at the Beach, ca 1885

Albert Gustaf Aristides Edelfelt, known as Albert Edelfelt, was a Finnish painter who was born in Porvoo on July 21, 1854 and died on August 18, 1905.

His father, Carl Albert, was a prestigious architect. Albert Edelfelt admired the poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg, who was a family friend. Runeberg's company had a lasting impact on Edelfelt, who from time to time drew inspiration from scenes from Finnish history to make his paintings. Edelfelt also illustrated his epic poem The Stories of Ensign Stål.

He studied in Antwerp (1873–1874), Paris (1874–1878) and St. Petersburg (1881–1882).

In 1888 he married Baroness Vapaaherratar Ellan de la Chapelle, with whom he had a son.

Edelfelt was one of the first Finnish artists to achieve international fame. His work was successful in Paris and he was one of the founders of the realist art movement in Finland. He also collaborated with many artists from his country, such as the young Akseli Gallen-Kallela whom he facilitated his arrival in Paris.

Edelfelt commence ses études d'art a 15ans à l'école de dessin de la Société d'art finlandais d'Helsinki, puis en tant qu'étudiant d'Adolf von Becker 1831/1909, réalise en 1874 cette académie d'un jeune modèle de 17ans.

Mettant en valeur la hauteur de hanche dans cette pose en contraposto, le modèle en faisait profession depuis l'âge de 12ans.
