Mummies might be creepy, but they can’t hurt us, right? Tell that to the people of Arica, Chile who live near the toxin releasing Chinchorro Mummies.

This should be Arica. For her was written the alternative, and I think first, version of Christie Road, my favourite song. I wounder how it would have sounded since the lyrics have some differences.

February 4, 2023 - Day 39
Arica, Chile - This town of 222,619 is Chile’s northern most city located 11 miles south of the border with Peru. It has a big port that serves as free port for Bolivia. The community was celebrating Carnival while we were here and there were thousands of people dressed up in costumes dancing. I put just one video of the dancers below but I took about a dozen. It has a very nice promenade thru the city center with lots of shops and restaurants. It has a very dry climate and is know in Chile as the “city of the eternal spring.
The dried brown folded up stuff in the photo below is a edible seaweed known as cochayuyo, or Durvillaea antarctica. It has a long history in southern Chilean cuisine. Archaeologists found dried remains of cochayuyo in 14,000-year-old hearths at Monte Verde, suggesting that early communities used the protein-heavy plant as a dietary staple.
Chileans still opt to include cochayuyo in family recipes, despite no longer needing to lean on the seaweed for sustenance. Cooks chop up the plant’s stem and add it to traditional stews, ceviches, and salads. Though its flavor is rather mild, it does add a chewy texture and saltiness to dishes. Creative vegetarian chefs also use cochayuyo as a meat replacement, working it into empanadas, croquettes, and risottos. The country exports dried cochayuyo to Taiwan, and the kelp grows wild around New Zealand, as well.
