FUTURE LUCASFILM PROJECTS REVEALED GET READY FOR PATTY JENKINS’ ROGUE SQUADRON FILM, AN AHSOKA TANO LIVE-ACTION SERIES, THE RETURN OF HAYDEN CHRISTENSEN AND MUCH, MUCH MORE.       Today at The Walt Disney Company’s Investor Day event, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy announced a staggering number of new films, series, and surprises that will expand the Star Wars galaxy like never before.
Tumblr media
Rogue Squadron The next Star Wars feature film will be Rogue Squadron — directed by Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman franchise). The story will introduce a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing, high-speed thrill-ride, and move the saga into the future era of the galaxy.       “It’s been a lifelong dream as a filmmaker to one day make a great fighter pilot film,” said Jenkins. “As the daughter of a great fighter pilot myself, some of the best memories of my life are of seeing my father’s squadron take off in their F4s every morning, and hearing and feeling the awe-inspiring power and grace. When he passed away in service to this country it ignited a burning desire to one day channel all of those emotions into one great film. When the perfect story arrived in combination with another true love of mine, the incomparable world of Star Wars, I knew I’d finally found my next film. I’m extremely honored and excited to take it on, and grateful to Lucasfilm, Disney, and the fans for extending that thrill to me.”       “Patty has established herself as one of the top directors working in the film industry today,” said Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “She’s a visionary who knows how to strike the balance between action and heart, and I can’t wait to see what she does in the Star Wars galaxy.”       Lock S-foils in attack position: Rogue Squadron arrives in theaters Christmas 2023.

Untitled Taika Waititi Film       A brand-new Star Wars feature with acclaimed filmmaker and Academy Award-winner Taika Waititi is in development. “Taika’s approach to Star Wars will be fresh, unexpected, and…unique,” said Kennedy. “His enormous talent and sense of humor will ensure that audiences are in for an unforgettable ride.”

Officially titled Obi-Wan Kenobi, the series begins 10 years after the dramatic events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith where he faced his greatest defeat, the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker turned evil Sith Lord Darth Vader. The series is directed by Deborah Chow, who helmed memorable episodes of The Mandalorian Season 1.      This will truly be a day long remembered, as it was confirmed that Hayden Christensen will be returning as Darth Vader. “This will be the rematch of the century,” Kennedy said.      “It was such an incredible journey playing Anakin Skywalker,” said Christensen. “Of course, Anakin and Obi-Wan weren’t on the greatest of terms when we last saw them… It will be interesting to see what an amazing director like Deborah Chow has in store for us all. I’m excited to work with Ewan again. It feels good to be back.”

TAYLOR MADE (#129, NOV 2011)
James Arnold Taylor can make the prestigious claim of having played Obi-Wan Kenobi longer than any other actor. With Season Four of Star Wars: The Clone Wars taking the show in exciting new directions, he tells us why the character is the rock at the center of the drama. Interview: Jonathan Wilkins
Why do you think Obi-Wan is so popular?
His accent! And his charm! Actually, I think that the biggest reason is the prequels. The prequels kind of turned Obi-Wan into a leading man, even though the story is about Anakin and Darth Vader and the Skywalkers. I think that he had a new grace with Ewan McGregor, and now The Clone Wars has taken the character even further.
Obi-Wan constantly attempts to keep everybody on track, but he also tries to be realistic. You saw that in The Citadel episode in Season Three where they’re losing clones left, right, and center. I remember when we were in the studio voicing that stuff, Dave [Filoni] kept telling me that Obi-Wan is the one who says we must move forward and we have to keep going. I had to strike a balance when recording those lines to show he has sympathy and heart for the clones, but at the same time he knows the mission. I think that sort of sums up the character. He’s strong when other characters don’t necessarily know what to do, and he’s a voice of reason.
What can we expect from Obi-Wan in Season Four?
There are some things in this season that took me by complete surprise. It’s going to be an awesome season for Obi-Wan and the fans who follow him. The fans on Twitter and Facebook always say, ‘More Obi-Wan! More Obi-Wan!’ Well, I think they’ll definitely get a lot more Obi-Wan this season. Oh, there are a lot of things I want to tell you, but I just can’t!
The drama got pretty intense last season. Is that something you anticipated when you signed up to do the show?
You know, I think it’s something I hoped for. Star Wars is essentially about a dramatic series of events: they’re fun and exciting, but there’s also a lot of intensity to them. Even if you go back to The Empire Strikes Back when Han Solo’s put into carbonite-that’s dramatic and compelling. As a kid I was like, “He’s gone! He’s dead! They’ve killed Han Solo!” I think with the way filmmaking has progressed, we’re able to push things so much further now with The Clone Wars. The drama in it feels real, and it also goes back to Dave Filoni and George Lucas’ vision, which tells us that life is sometimes filled with challenges but if you keep on the right path, you will always prevail. They’re made The Clone Wars into exciting, compelling TV that you want to go back to.
Do you think it’s unusual for an animated series to be that deep?
I never would have expected it on any other show. Even if you compare it to a film like [2007’s] Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, where we did get pretty deep, The Clone Wars has taken it to a whole new level. It’s like those sci-fi adventure shows that I love, such as Lost, Battlestar Galactica, and Heroes, which have that level of drama, realism, and characters you care about. Well, the makers of The Clone Wars have created that in 22 minutes every Friday night! I think that not only goes back to the writing, but also the artistry of it all.
Has it been important to have people on board like Christian Taylor who have a background in live-action?
When he did the “Mortis” episode, my reaction was, “Wow, this is something we haven’t ventured into before!” I really admire Christian’s writing and storylines. The writers take it from a viewpoint that it’s live-action. And with the technology they have now, the animators can do that—they’re making live action in a virtual world.
When do you get the script during the recording process, and what kind of work do you do before you even start recording?
It’s changed a bit over the last season. Some of that comes from working on such a tight schedule, but it’s also due to the top secret nature of it. Generally speaking, you’d get scripts 24 hours in advance, but now we get them when we go to the session.
But we do get a chance to go through everything before the session starts. Dave sits down with us all as a cast and goes through the story, and then talks to every person there, whether it’s a guest star or whether it’s Matt [Lanter], Ashley [Eckstein] or myself, who are there every week. He takes his time with each person and gives us pictures or descriptions of what’s happening, and provides background on the episodes either side of the one we’re recording. It really helps.
That approach also adds to our ability to change things. Dave might go, “Oh that doesn’t really feel like Obi-Wan. What if he said this instead?” Or I might say, “This is a great line as it’s written but when I say it, it doesn’t come out right.” There’s a freedom for us all to act as we might on camera.
The process of recording is intense, though. As voice actors, we really have to think on our toes. We run through a scene three to eight times on average, and try to make it different each time.
Prequel producer Rick McCallum says that a hint of romance between Padmé and Obi-Wan was cut from Revenge of the Sith. Is that something you’d like to see in The Clone Wars?
(Laughs) Cat [Taber, who plays Padme] and I are such good friends and we always joke around with Dave and say, “Come on, man, we’ve got to see a [romantic] episode like that!” In Episodes I and II, Obi-Wan thinks she’s a politician like Palpatine, and doesn’t buy what she says. But then somewhere down the line there’s a connection and a bond that’s made between them. In the show, we do get a chance to explore what happened and why they’re closer by Episode III.
Obi-Wan is quite straight-laced. Do you ever wish you could play more comedy with him?
Ewan [McGregor] did have some great moments, especially in the elevator scene in Episode III; Obi-Wan was having fun! You could see that playful nature in his relationship with Anakin-you could see they’re like brothers, not father and son. We do get some of those moments in The Clone Wars now and again, too. Several times each season, Obi-Wan has a quip that just cuts through and you’re like, “Oh behave, Obi-Wan!” So it’s definitely there, but it would be fun to see a bit more.
I play Plo Koon as well as Obi-Wan, and they’re very serious parts. I’m so honored to play these two Jedi because they hold such weight in the storyline, but it would be fun to have a character who could go a bit more crazy every once in a while, as well!
He has an intriguing relationship with Asajj Ventress.
Oh yes, there’s a lot of playfulness between those characters. I mean, they really get to flirt! Fans often ask me: ‘So what’s the deal between Obi-Wan and Ventress?” [Adopts Obi-Wan voice) “Well,I can’t possibly say....”
Also, Nike Futterman [who plays Ventress] is such a fantastic actress. In fact, the very first scene we recorded was the one you see in The Clone Wars film, where she and I are having our battle. She brings me up to a different level as an actor.
You also had some great banter with the Duchess Satine in the “Duchess of Mandalore.” Was that as much fun to play as it was to watch?
It was. Anna Graves, who plays the Duchess, is such a talented actress. She and I have done promo work in the past, and for us to have a good old battle of words is great!
I love the comedy in their relationship. Like that bit in the second part of the story, when Obi-Wan is hanging upside down and about to be crushed, and he says: “I’m a little tired up here!” But there’s also a love between those characters, too. I think that’s the main thing—we joke with the ones that we Love. Obi-Wan has a heart for all of the characters, and I try to keep that in mind when I’m doing it, so it doesn’t come across as too mean or snarky.
How do you think Obi-Wan’s relationship with Anakin is progressing? Do you think he’s at all aware of Anakin’s dark side slowly coming to the front?
I try to keep that in mind, especially in the last season when Mortis appeared. It’s one of those parts where you’re like, “How do I play this?” Because right now we’re in between Episodes II and III: I know what happens in III, but I can’t let that affect how I play him here. I think that he feels—and this is the way I play it—that [the attraction to the dark side] is always going to be a part of Anakin and any other Jedi. But Obi-Wan knows the strength of Anakin and thinks he’ll overcome it.
I don’t think Obi-Wan expected anything that happened in Episodes III to V. I think he was so trusting in Anakin and the Force: he had hope and faith. I really don’t think he expected the dark side to be so heavy and actually take Anakin away from him. And of course that’s a pain that we see in Episode III.
And it also reflects his trust in Qui-Gon.
That’s a good point. I always think about that. I mean, we always think of Yoda as his teacher and instructor, but really the father to him was Qui-Gon. When we had the surprise of Qui-Gon appearing in the “Mortis” trilogy, I was like, “Oh this is so awesome!” And what a great honor to have a scene with Liam Neeson!
When we did that scene, I actually, very subtly, youthed my voice up a little. I went back to The Phantom Menace, watched that a lot, and gave the voice a slightly lighter and softer tone. Because Obi-Wan reverts back to when he was younger. I thought he would be very off-guard and revert back to when he was with his master.
Did you get to meet Liam Neeson?
I didn’t. He was in New York when we did it, and he recorded his part there. It’s funny: that is such a heavy part of voice-acting. I’ve been able to work with just about everybody in showbiz today, but usually the scenes are recorded completely separately so I never get to meet them. Take Patrick Stewart and Samuel L. Jackson—I’ve been in five or six projects with each of them, and yet we’ve never met. Even though most of our scenes feature the two of us having conversations! One of these days it would be fun to meet them, but alas, that’s the work of a voice actor!
If you could play a character from the movies who we haven’t seen yet, who would it be?
I’d love to see a young Han Solo, but I know that’s not possible! It would be interesting doing Uncle Owen—we haven’t seen him [in The Clone Wars], but we know he’s kicking and right now. That’s a voice that would fun to explore. I’ve always felt that the character goes deeper than we ever got to see. I’d love to learn more about exactly what he knows. That would be fun!

George Lucas involvement in The Clone Wars Series
This subject is being talked about by some here on Tumblr, so I thought I’d break open my Star Wars Quote files and share what I could to facilitate others who are already in discussions about it. I hope this aids them in that.
Tumblr media
That said, Ohh boy, here we go. =]
-----------------------------------------
"This series [Clone Wars Series] at least to George is NOT EU, it is a part of Star Wars as he sees it. I think if anything there was a period where Henry [Gilroy] and I had to learn exactly what it took to be a part of George Lucas’ Star Wars, and tell the Star Wars story his way. We had to learn how to look at the Galaxy from his point of view and let go of some of what we considered canon after we found out the ideas were only EU." ~  Dave Filoni 2008
----
"This is Star Wars, and I don't make a distinction between [The Clone Wars] series and the films." ~ George Lucas, SciFiNow, October 2011
Tumblr media
-------------
"The TV series is exactly like the movies, exactly. I mean, you can see it in the clip. It’s basically just the movies only with cartoon characters. It’s basically a dramatic series, there’s a lot of action, a bit of humor." ~ George Lucas, 2008 Interview about the Clone Wars series.
Tumblr media
------------------
One of the main characters in the feature film, a 90 minute introduction to the series that hits theaters August 15, is Anakin's teenage Padawan, Ahsoka. Lucas said:
"[With Ahsoka] I wanted to develop a character who would help Anakin settle down. He's a wild child after [Attack of the Clones]. He and Obi Wan don't get along. So we wanted to look at how Anakin and Ahsoka become friends, partners, a team. When you become a parent or you become a teacher you have to become more respnsible. I wanted to force Anakin into that role of responsibility, into that juxtaposition. I have a couple of daughters so I have experience with that situation. I said instead of a guy let's make her a girl. Teenage girls are just as hard to deal with as teenage boys are."

"I get all my information on the Clone Wars from him. [George Lucas]"
"I can pitch him ideas and say 'lets do certain things', but at the end of the say he will say 'yes' or he will say 'no', and than that is the way it's gonna go."
~ Dave Filoni, 2019

"The importance of The Clone Wars that cannot be understated is that it was the last huge expansion of the Star Wars universe that came directly from George Lucas." ~ Pablo Hidalgo
----------------
"Star Wars: The Clone Wars is the biggest education on how George Lucas saw his Universe. Over 44 hours of his storytelling compared to the 13 hours or so he spent in live action."

"In discussions directly with George, he was very adamant about Jango not being Mandolorian, which is the entire reason that scene existed that moment. To have that specificity that Jango was not Mandolorian at least not to Mandolorians."

FROM THE FILONI FILES: In the season 2 episode of STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS, Mandalorian prime minister Almec made the claim that Jango Fett is not a Mandalorian warrior. This info stunned many fans who always assumed he was pure Mando. Many claimed Almec was lying, others claimed it was a cover-up. This topic came up a few times during our conversations with Dave Filoni. In this compilation, Dave addresses the issue and sets the record straight.

Tumblr media
This of course resulted in massive retcons of the Expanded Universe version of Mandolorians. This wasn't on accident, this was intentional on Lucas part because he was pissed at some of the liberties and things people in the EU were saying that went against the agreement in allowed the EU to come into existance at all.
Seperate Universes. This wasn’t figurative, this was meant literally, and Lucas said it over and over. Plus he found out they were using the term  'canon' in reference to EU things, and that was a massive no no. Only his direct works were canon. This went against the agreement he made with Howard Roffman, who really didn't keep his side of the bargain officially. They were essentially lieing and being deceitful about the EU's standing. That whole Canon Tier, that wasn't a policy, that was the filing system Leland Chee used for the Holocron. It was only used by Lucas Licensing. It was all a big shame to make people think the EU had more standing in the SWs than it did by the legitimate agreement. Roffman was concerned that if people knew it was a separate universe and it wasn't canon that they would be less likely to spend their money on it because 'it didn't count'.
Roffman couldn't get Lucas to agree to it being one universe, he tried over and over again, but Lucas wasn't having it. This was behind closed doors at the time of course, Roffman comes clean about in a live broadcasted interview with a studio audience when taking questions.
They couldn't get Lucas to budge, and Lucas didn't really care about the retcons he might cause, and there was a lot of fighting over it. But, of course, Lucas was the boss and it was his final say. This had been ongoing thing, it wasn’t something happened overnight.
That's why you have accidental retcons of major story lines, opps... He says what is and isn't canon, no one else.  People weren’t following the guidelines he set, and he had been a pretty good sport about it overall. Again, this wasn’t overnight. It built up over time.
There’s some speculation about the specifics, but that there had been many angry words said, back and forth in the background. Roffman and Lucas apparently had a lot of loud conversations.
“So we would have very interesting skirmishes because we had a bunch of stuff that became to the fans pretty much canon [Head-canon] about what happened after Return of the Jedi, what different places in the galaxy were called, lots of different things and if he was proposing to do something in the prequels that contradicted that we would have long debates which usually ended at least after the first session with "I don't care this is what I'm doing", but after he 4th or 5th session sometimes "Alright 'maybe' we can change it this way."
~ Howard Roffman, 2017
[I’ll be sharing more very important quotes from that Interview with Howard Roffman soon.]
A great deal of the time, Lucas wouldn’t budge. The Mandolorian Storyline in The Clone Wars being one such example of that.
This resulted in Karen Traviss losing her mind over the Mandolorians Lucas made in canon, and she was saying she wouldn't go along with it because they were 'changing canon', which is totally untrue, but she made some public statements about it
"Please also be aware of one basic fact - all writers for a franchise have to follow official canon. You can't go off and do your own thing, or else the book won't get approved and printed. It's that simple. So please don't keep asking me to carry on in the old canon, because I'm just not allowed to."
Karen Traviss EU Author, 2009.
[This is what insanity looks like when you write it down. - Must follow canon, but wont let me carry on in the old Canon? Earth to Karen, please respond. The EU wasn’t canon!! ]
So Lucas shot back thru his head writer on the Clone Wars series, Henry Gilroy whom himself had been an EU author in the Clone Wars comics before being tapped for Canon Clone Wars series who responded, although not directly to her, but in response to her being unwilling to go on and leaving over it.
"It is unfortunate that [EU author Karen Traviss is] moving on because [of] her opinion that canon is being changed. I guess the big problem is the assumption that her work is canon in the first place.  After working with George on The Clone Wars series I know there are elements of her work that are not in line with his vision of Star Wars.."
~ Henry Gilroy, The Clone Wars series Head Writer/ EU Author [Comics] 2009
-----------------------
To Lucas, the entire Saga is about Anakin Skywalker/ Darth Vader, of course he was going to be heavily involved in the Clone Wars series, Anakin was one of the major reoccuring characters in it, that's Lucas pride and joy. But I digress....
Tumblr media
-----------------------
“For me and my training here at Lucasfilm, working with George, he and I always thought the Expanded Universe was just that. It was an expanded universe. Basically it’s stories that are really fun and really exciting, but they’re a view on Star Wars, not necessarily canon to him. That was the way it was from the day I walked into Lucasfilm with him all through Clone Wars, everything we worked on, he felt the Clone Wars series and his movies were what was actually the reality of it all, the canon..."
~ Dave Filoni 2017
---------
"In the same interview, Dave Filoni said that George Lucas told him, that the movies and The Clone Wars television series, were the only thing Lucas considered canon." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars_expanded_to_other_media
----------
"That’s one of the biggest debates in Star Wars, what counts? *The idea of what is canon? When I talk to George I know that he considers his movies, this series and his live-action series canon." ~ Dave Filoni, SW:TCW 2008
-----------
"I always think of the research you speak of as what I knew about the EU before I took this job. As I stated above, working directly with George changes the way you see the EU and everything in it."
~ Dave Filoni 2008
--------------
What do you think about Star Wars: The Clone Wars not following the continuity established previously in books and comics for the timeline between Episodes II and III? Could all those events that are being unfolded ever be folded into a coherent timeline? Some time ago you started a podcast related to The Clone Wars, will there ever be new episodes?
"As far as continuity, I see The Clone Wars as being no different than the arrival of the prequels in 1999. We fans knew that those movies would be a representation of the true Star Wars universe as imagined by George Lucas, and in some cases, it would not perfectly match the stories told by Expanded Universe authors. So, we had to unlearn all we had learned about the Mon Calamari being discovered by the Empire, about Boba Fett being Jaster Mereel, and about the Republic having a standing military.
I think with each episode, we start to get a better understanding about what the real Star Wars universe is like."
Pablo Hidalgo 2010
---------------------
Tumblr media
"There's this notion that everything changed when everything became Legends. And I can see why people think that. But, you know, having worked with George I can tell you that it was always very clear -- and he made it very clear -- that the films and the TV shows were the only things that he considered Canon. That was it.
"So everything else was a world of fun ideas, exciting characters, great possibilities, the EU was created to explore all those things. But from the filmmaking world I was brought into, the films and TV shows were it". ~ Dave Filoni speaking about working with George Lucas
This is the actual video of when Dave Filoni said the above quotes during an interview on 'The Star Wars show' [41.40 mark] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcNXPNXOv2A&t=16s

"What George did with the films and The Clone Wars was pretty much *his universe ,” Chee said. “He didn’t really have that much concern for what we were doing in the books and games. So the Expanded Universe was very much separate." ~ Leland Chee, 2017 - SYFY WIRE
Tumblr media
------------------
“Lucas’ canon – and when I say ‘his canon’, I’m talking about what he was doing in the films and what he was doing in The Clone Wars  – was hugely important. But what we were doing in the books really wasn’t on his radar.”
–Leland Chee, 2018
----------------
Pablo Hidalgo on Lucas and the EU being separate Universes. https://i.redd.it/3fpbkocr43q01.png "He [Lucas] only considers his movies and TV projects as his universe, and told the Clone Wars writers to only worry about those."
[That really says it all.]
-------------------
“The most definitive canon of the Star Wars universe is encompassed by the feature films and television productions in which George Lucas is directly involved. The movies and the Clone Wars television series are what he and his handpicked writers reference when adding cinematic adventures to the Star Wars oeuvre. But Lucas allows for an Expanded Universe that exists parallel to the one he directly oversees. […] Though these [Expanded Universe] stories may get his stamp of approval, they don’t enter his canon unless they are depicted cinematically in one of his projects.”

[Orginal commentor] - "Some facebook site just posted a "Bring back GeorgeLucas" petition....wrong on so many levels. With Ep. lll & TCW he went out ona high."
[Pablo Hidalgo]   "Why would he ever come back to these folks? All that love and goodwill from the internet.=]"
[Second commentator] - "I remember the EU fans in the early-mid 00's trashed George endlessly, and now they act like he's their savior."
[Pablo Hidalgo] - *"And yet we are following his model of regarding the EU vs. his canon. Weird."
[Second commentator] - "Well they get the false impression that George was a big EU fan and stood by it."
[Pablo Hidalgo] - "Where do they get this stuff? =] It's like his last 3 movies and six seasons of TCW didn't happen!"

Q: Hi Mr Chee! I’ve got a question about continuity – are all the various different media of Star Wars (the films, TCW, the video games, the EU) intended to form a single universe, or is the EU intended as a parallel, alternate universe (like, for example, the different continuities between the various Batman comics and films)? I realise that fans tend to each have their own personal preferences, but I was wondering what the official Lucasfilm company policy regarding this was? Many thanks!
"The dual universe question comes up often. I know George Lucas has mentioned it being two universes, but that’s not how I see it. His vision is definitely not beholden to ours, but ours is definitely beholden to his."
Leland Chee 2012
[Nabbed!!! He was still talking his 'singular universe' garbage the week before heh]
Tumblr media
-----------------------
“Star Wars continuity, even EU continuity, does not rest on my shoulders. Our licensees submit product directly to either our editors or our product development managers. The Holocron serves as a tool for them to check any issues regarding continuity, and after that, if the editors or developers have any questions, they pass it along to me to check for continuity. At the same time, I am constantly on the lookout to make sure that any new continuity being created gets entered in the Holocron. With regard to the the films and The Clone Wars, I am not involved in continuity approvals though I have often been asked to provide reference material.”

These are pretty much all about the Clone Wars series, and him working with Lucas on it.

These are just some of them, there are alot more and even in ones where it doesn't specifically site Lucas in the title, he comes up in all of them at certain points and talks about working with Lucas on the Clone Wars, so if your interested in this subject, it really pays to listem to all of them, they're facisinating insights and you learn so much about so many things both in story and out of story, some really good stuff.
They're call ins for Rebel Force Radio, They interview Filoni constantly, theres a ton of of them on Youtube. This should get you started and than you can go from there on your own if you were interested and hearing more. Really good stuff.
--------------------
There’s a lot more, but I think this should serve as a good example of just how pervasive Lucas’ direct involvement in the Clone Wars series was.
Lucas loved it. He saw it exactly like the movies in terms of importance.

THE MANDALORIAN: CHAPTERS 9 - The Return
Tumblr media
First, if you have not yet watched The Clone Wars animated series, or Star Wars Rebels, stop now, go to Disney+ and just knock it out it.
This story is a love letter to Dave Filoni’s years of dedicated work with Master George Lucas. Jon Fav is amazing, he’s an icon and a visionary (and I envision him as Paz in this story), but The Mandalorian would not exist but for the world that Dave executed from George’s vision.
Second, this is a completed story, that is being edited and posted a chapter at a time. Comments are appreciated but the plot is fairly set.
Third, this is pure FAN FICTION. I have no affiliation with anyone living or dead who has any role in the Star Wars universe. Or Disney. Or anything. I’m a fan only.
The story built up in my head over the first series of The Mandalorian and I could not wait for the second series, so I wrote it just for fun.
Enjoy.

CHAPTER 9: THE RETURN
The Mandalorian set his course and the ship surged as the familiar hypnotic streaks of hyperspace flowed into view. He always felt relief each time they entered hyperspace even though he never really trusted anywhere was safe. Even since the threat on Nevarro was destroyed he still felt uneasy, partly because he was still not completely healed, in more ways than one.
His body ached, in every direction. He prided himself on quick recoveries, and near indestructibility. But his brush with death a week ago had broken down many of his ideas of who he thought he was. He had faced for the first time in his life that his mortality was catching up to him, sooner rather than later. And that meant something now that he had a Child who needed him. He remembered his father figure going through the same process. And as the older man slowed down, he had watched with pride as Din found himself coming up as the most impressive fighter in the Death Watch corps. Well, him and Paz, of course.
His training fights with Paz were legendary in their Clan. Clan Vizsla prided themselves in keeping the strongest Foundlings. And Din, while physically smaller, was faster and smarter to match Paz’ brute force. They built a friendship and respect over the years, and when their mother was executed and their father died in the conflict they were hunted and forced to flee by their Clan in order to preserve the future, and Paz left Mandalore with Din until they found the Tribe.
His heart ached. The Tribe was now gone, and so was Paz. They had fought over Din’s bounty hunter activities, Paz never approved of the questionable moral code of killing people who did not deserve death. Din asserted that anyone who runs is guilty. In hindsight, Paz could not have been more right. They had reconciled with Din reclaiming his honor in Paz’ eyes the night he rescued the Child. His guilt at the following destruction of the Tribe, however, weighed heavier than even his new mission.
His heart also had new holes where friends were now gone. They had given their lives so that his aching body could continue to safeguard the Child. Every time he felt he might lose his temper, he heard Kuiil in his mind reminding him to reinforce with patience. And every time he took off his helm and looked at the mirror, he thought about what IG-11 had seen with his synthetic eyes. Had he seen what Din now saw? These days he barely recognized the man he was before he met the Child.
His head ached and his brow furrowed as he continued to second guess the course he had laid in the navigation. The Armorer had said she knew of old tales of battles between the Mandalorians and the Child’s kind — the Jedi. His only lead then was to find those tales. He had to return to Mandalore. He had not returned since the Purge, and for the past ten years had been so focused on survival that he never even considered looking back. Now, with mind, body  and heart still recovering from the battle on Nevarro, he was about to reopen old wounds.
A soft beep on the comm caught his eye and made his heart jump with more of the same uneasy feeling that had been nagging him. He turned back to the ops station and found the Child asleep in the seat with the Mythosaur skull still in his mouth, covered in drool. Then he turned back to the console and pressed the blinking button.
A ghostly holoprojection of Cara Dune appeared and Din found he was holding his breath as he stared at her face.
“Hey Mando — checking in on you as planned. This week Greef and I have confirmed the few remaining Imps are on the run, but I will feel better once the new militia has cleared every building in the city. Once that’s done we will check in with the Jawas and start cleaning up this place. Greef is setting up the Cantina as his base of operation, so contact us there at this signal. You should see him. You’d think he was already Mayor, General, and Senator of Nevarro.” She could not contain a chuckle. “Listen, do me a favor and give yourself a quick medscan. It will put me at ease to know you’re physically capable to take care of the Kid, OK? As agreed, I expect a response within two days, even just an acknowledgement with your code if that’s all you can do. If you fail to respond we are coming after you. Stay safe, buddy.”
Cara had a small smile on her lips then dropped her eyes as she reached down to close the comm channel message, and Mando felt a slight clench in his stomach when her image fizzled out. He pushed down that feeling and turned back to the Child who was now soundly snoring and the Mythosaur skull was hanging out of his mouth.
Din gritted his teeth and took in a sharp breath to avoid making any sounds as the pain caused a tear to form in the corner of his eye. He knew if he stood up his message would be more convincing. His last medscan was less than encouraging, he was healing, but not nearly as quickly as he had hoped. From the blast and fall he had multiple fractures of his ribs, vertebrae and torn sacral ligaments, and fluid on his bruised lungs. IG-11 had healed his skull fracture and subarachnoid bleed from the fall but the concussion was still affecting him daily. And he also had a healing torn rotator cuff from his stunt on the TIE fighter.
His first stop after they left Nevarro was to acquire some bacta so he could start infusions. It took every ounce of his infusions to keep healing fast enough to convince the Child he did not need to intervene. IG was right about his wounds healing in a matter of hours, but there were just so many wounds that the hours kept adding up… and there wasn’t a chance he would ever tell Dune any of that.
He caught his breath again as he straightened up and then composed himself and pressed the comm button.
“Dune, good to hear from you, and that Greef is already setting himself up as the new emperor. Medscan is improving. We have a new heading. I will send encoded coordinates so you can monitor our progress. Please confirm the Armorer is safe and if any others of the Tribe —have returned.” His voice wavered as a shock of pain jolted through his ribs. “The Kid is asleep, so I’ll keep this short. Djarin, out.” He reached for the comm button and closed the channel quickly before catching himself on the console and taking long, slow breaths.
He looked at the hyperspace navigation timer, he had just enough time for a quick infusion. He had to get it started before the kid woke up. He moved carefully down the ladder leaving the cockpit door open so he could hear any movement. The quiet snores were reassuring. He had to stop a couple of times to catch his breath, but his focus was unwavering. His kit came with an infusion port which made his hookup simple, so he just had to remove his armor and expose his shin where the port was drilled into his bone.
Once the line was set in place he decided to lay back on his sleep cot just for a few minutes.
******************************************************
He woke with a start, but there was a warm spot at his side were the Child had clearly moved to sleep with him and he was snoring again. He looked up at the bacta bag and found it was empty and he was actually feeling less pain around his head, shoulder and ribs. He flexed his abdominal muscles and self-corrected as he groaned to sit up — there was less pain.
The Child immediately stirred and yawned loudly. He looked up at Din and sleepily blinked then chirped with a questioning tone.
“I’m feeling better, kid. Thanks for keeping me company.” He picked up the bag and showed it to the Child. “See? This will help fix me up.”
The Child cocked his head slightly, as if unconvinced.
“Tough audience. Come on, let’s check on our course.” He gingerly moved himself off the sleep bench and then tucked the Child into his arm with the bad shoulder and with the other pulled himself up just high enough up the ladder to deposit the Child up on the command deck, then climbed up the rest of the way with both arms.
Every time, the kid made a beeline to the controls and Din had enough practice to stay just far enough ahead of him to scoop him up and deposit him back into his seat before he could drop them out of hyperspace into a black hole. The Child whined with a squeaky pout but admitted defeat again.
Din checked the timer and found they had just under ten minutes left in hyperspace. Then he noticed he had another message. He frowned. And his finger actually shook just a little as he reached for the blinking button.
The ghostly image of Cara Dune appeared again, “This message is for the Kid. Hey Kid, please do me a favor and tell your father to try putting on a brave face for someone who isn’t an idiot. Miss you Kid. Take care of him for me. I’ll report back on the Armorer when I have made contact.”
She disappeared, and this time her image was not smiling. Din’s head bowed slightly. He should have waited to reply after the infusion.
Then he looked up at the Child who was returning his gaze. “We’ve got each other’s backs, Kid. We are going to be OK.”
The Child giggled and reached a small three claw hand toward him. Din reached out with his finger and the Child grabbed it and squeezed.
The hyperdrive now started beeping, they were approaching their destination. Din set the Child back in his seat and then turned to the controls. With years of experience he eased the Razor Crest out of hyperspace just early enough to avoid alerting of the old Outer Defense perimeter. He had heard that it was back in force and he did not want to start off this encounter with a fight.
He flipped his universal local transmission switch, “Outer Defense, Outer Defense, this is Razor Crest requesting permission to approach.”
No response.
“Outer Defense, Outer Defense, do you copy?”
Another long beat, Din’s heart began to quicken.
“This is the Outer Defense, please repeat your sign,” the deep voice on the other end sounded suspicious.
Din sighed relief, but also pursed his lips. His ship should be known to the Outer Defense database. They were no doubt scanning him to confirm — it was the ship Paz and he had taken off Mandalore.
“This is the Razor Crest. Repeat, the Razor Crest.”
There was another short pause. “Clan Vizsla celebrates your return Paz.”
Din swallowed hard, “Negative, Outer Defense control, this is Din Djarin. My brother Paz — his location is unknown.”
There was another heavy silence. “Din Djarin, Clan Vizsla celebrates your return. The foundlings are the future. Proceed to the Vizsla Landing and report to your Clan for the Rebuilding. Welcome home.”
Mixed emotions filled Din hearing these words, but all he said was, “Acknowledged.”
Coordinates were sent for his heading, and he did not recognize it. The Vizsla compound was no doubt destroyed in the Purge. Din put the Razor Crest on autopilot and then reached back to pick up the Child so he could see everything on their approach to his new home.
“See this Kid? This is your new adopted home. Mandalore.”
The Child looked all around with wide eyes as they passed the Outer Defense in the meteor belt and made their way towards the brown planet with swirling white clouds. As they moved closer, patches of green were visible surrounding interconnected small lakes of blue below. It looked like a small part of the eco-system was reasserting itself. He desperately wished that Paz was there with him to see the planet slowly coming back to life.
The ship moved into orbit and then began the gentle descent to the ruins of the Capital city, Sundari. He recognized many destroyed landmarks, many historic locations lost to future generations. They passed the old palace of the Prime Minister and the Representatives which looked like it was being rebuilt. The square of statues, however, which previously held colossi of Mandalorian history was now full of rubble.
The other thing he noticed as they moved closer to the large squares was he could see hundreds of people, some with helmets, but mostly without. He knew that the Way was not widely observed, and mostly within the military, but it still felt jarring to him to see so many Mandalorians without helms. Living normal lives. His entire life since the Clone Wars had been about survival and protecting the safety of others. His life was the Way, but life went on outside the Way. And that was as it should be; it was what he should be fighting for.
Then he realized that the ship was aimed toward the old headquarters of the Chancellor of Defense. He smiled to himself. Clan Vizsla had come home. The Death Watch was the highest level Defense Squadron of Mandalore before they split from the pacifist government. He was happy they had been restored to their honorable mission.
The Razor Crest set down on the first landing pad and Din started shutting down all systems. The Child, however, could not contain his excitement and immediately jumped down from his seat on Din’s lap and started toward the ladder.
“Wait! KID!” Din shouted as he quickly flipped switches  in order. Then he rushed after the Child and found him in the sleeping bunk retrieving his blue blanket and his silver ball. Din had to laugh and sighed with relief.
“I’m ready to settle in for a while too, but let’s take this one step at a time ok?” He put the ball and blanket down again on the bed, picked up the Child set him down on the ground, and then squatted down to his level.
“We have a mission. We need to find your people. And we need to find out if we have a place here if our mission to find your people fails. These people are our kin, but they respect strength.” He smiled to himself. “Who am I kidding, We know you have plenty of that.”
The Child looked at him thoughtfully, and then lifted up his arms. Din picked him up again and they touched foreheads and then looked at each other.
“Be brave, be careful, and stick with me, ok?”
The look the Child gave almost looked like a small smirk, and he got the distinct impression he was thinking, I’m always brave. He couldn’t help but suspect the Child was starting to understand him.
“Let’s go.” He put the Child down again, and then lowered the ship’s outer door.
******************************************************
By the time the door lowered down completely there was a greeting party already arriving on a speeder. They all wore Clan Vizsla armor, and several ancient Clan helmets, but no individuals that he specifically recognized. That did not surprise him because the Clan previously numbered in the thousands and stretched across multiple settlements. Din started to walk down the ramp and he could hear the Child walking next to him.
The female at the head of the party stepped down from the speeder and waited for them to approach her. Din walked slowly to accommodate for smaller legs and feet.
Din stopped just in front of the female and then eased down on one knee and bowed over his knee.
“Din Djarin, Foundling of Clan Vizsla. I’m reporting home because I have — a new Clan Vizsla Foundling. I also must report that Paz Vizsla is currently — missing. He was lost on Nevarro when former Imperials attacked, but the Tribe reports that he may have escaped off-world.”
The female stepped forward and reached down to Din’s pauldron and ran her fingers over his sigil. Then placed a hand on top of Din’s helmet.
“Din Djarin, House Vizsla rejoices in your return. Clan Vizsla’s losses were among the heaviest. Clan Wren was nearly decimated. And Clan Saxon has failed to make restitution. The Foundlings are the future. Rise, Din Djarin.”
Din looked up and stood before her, and gestured to the Child standing by his leg.
“This is my Foundling. He did not have any identification when I found him.  He does not yet understand the Way. We come before you seeking his acceptance in the Clan, and for him to be named.”
The female nods, “Of course. What significance is the sigil?”
Din nodded back. “The Child and I fought the Mudhorn together. He used his mind to hold the Mudhorn back long enough for me to kill it. He saved my life, and then I saved him from the Empire.”
The entire party on the speeder now turned their helmets towards the Child. He looked back at them with large black eyes and squeaked, but then he puffed up his chest a little proudly. Din was happy his smile was hidden by his helm.
The female looked back at Din and nodded again. “We will find an appropriate name for this impressive show of strength from one so small.” She cocked her head. “Do you intend to train him?”
Din shook his head, “The Foundling is in my care but he would not survive the training. I must find his own kind, or find someone who can train him to use his powers — as a Jedi.”
Every person on the pad froze at the mention of that Order. Din could barely comprehend how he had never heard of them before if so many Mandalorians knew of them. The female had frozen as well but now recovered her composure.
“Come, let us discuss this mission in more detail — inside.”
She turned and stepped back onto the speeder. Din motioned for the Child to follow, then Din was the last to board. The whole ride inside the structure he could feel the eyes of the entire party on him and he could feel the Child next to him inching closer to him nervously. But Din was proud he stood his ground and did not cower or hide under his cape.
The speeder stopped inside the compound at a grand door with high arches that once held stained glass. Four of the Mandalorians stepped out and took posts next to this door. Then the female stepped off and led the way through the door and down a stately hallway for Din and the Child to follow. She did not walk slowly, so Din picked up the Child and he rode on his shoulder. Din walked a little slower as he looked around and hid his stiff joints from the others. The female stopped outside a large office and waited for them to walk inside.
Once inside two others of the entourage stopped to stand guard and she closed the doors and turned to face them. Her helmet had accents of gold and white, and the eyes came out to a wider point compared to the Armorer. She was taller, as tall as Paz, and carried all of the authority expected in his Clan.
“Din Djarin, I am Zaral Vizsla. I am Paz Vizsla’s cousin — and yours. Your father, my mother’s younger brother, as you know, died during the Purge. Your father saved many Foundlings, you are among only four to complete the training, and you are the only one to return after the Purge.”
Din felt his legs going slightly weak as the weight of this information set in.
“Then... you do not know of Paz’s whereabouts?”
Zaral shook her head. “He has not yet returned. You were the last to see him alive.”
“I was not. The leader of the Tribe on Nevarro, the Armorer, she saw him when the Imperials attacked. He was last seen during the assault. He was among many that disappeared and were assumed escaped — or captured.” He finished quietly. To be captured would mean death.
Zaral nodded. “We must make contact with the Armorer then. We must continue to bring our sisters and brothers home.”
Din nodded, “The Tribe as you know has no communication equipment, to prevent detection. But I have people on Nevarro that may contact her directly.”
Zaral nodded, and she then turned toward the volumes of data on the shelves behind her desk and walked around behind it.
“Today, however, I’m afraid we must face an unpleasant task before we can celebrate the naming of your Foundling. We must address the issue of his apparent power in the Force.”
“The Force?” Din said.
“It is the name of the power this Foundling has a connection to. It is how he lifted a Mudhorn that was ten thousand times his weight,” Zaral replied.
“He also stopped a fire trooper’s weapon. And he healed a Mynock venom wound.”
Zaral now looked up from the data console and stood. “This Child has done all of these things?”
Din nodded, and the Child chirped in response.
Zaral stood astounded. “I have only heard legends of Jedi with such powers. Even the few left that have met our Clan cannot do all of these things, with years of training.”
Din was now also stunned. “But — what does that mean for him?”
Zaral shook her head. “I do not know.” She beckoned for him to move closer to the desk.
A symbol appeared on the holodisplay, one that he did not recognize. “This is the symbol of the Jedi. They were an Order of sorcerers that began untold eons ago, the Order trained those with a strong connection to the Force to use their power to protect freedom in the Galaxy from those who would dominate others.
“They grew in number and then began the discord. As with all organizations splinters began and some maintained a peaceful demeanor while others tended toward a warrior way of life. The warriors, however, became too enamored with their growing power and soon left the Order completely to grow as a new Order called the Sith. They cultivated their power in Darkness and waged war on the Jedi, nearly wiping them out. The Jedi power came from the Light and soon their numbers of recruits far surpassed the growth of the Darkness and they were victorious, destroying the Sith Temple at Moraband.
“Five thousand years ago, the Jedi Order established a Temple on Coruscant, and became advisors to a rising power that eventually became the Old Republic. But after three thousand years the Mandalore found a decline in that Republic was due to the philosophy of the Jedi, avoiding battle at all costs, and protecting weak leaders, and they came into conflict. Our weaponry was developed over millennia in order to manage battle with Jedi whose powers required no machines. We were victorious on many battle fields. Over a thousand years ago, Tarre Vizsla, a Mandalorian with an unrivaled connection to the Force, was allowed to train with the Jedi because his mother felt that the conflict must end. He became one of the fiercest warriors of the Jedi, and he created a weapon called the Dark Saber. But ultimately, due to politics on both sides, he was forced to choose. He refused to fight against his own people, and he left the Order, leading the Mandalorians against the Jedi to his death. His Dark Saber was brought back to the Jedi temple until it was stolen back by House Vizsla and used as a symbol to rule Mandalore.”
Zaral turned back to Din and the Child who still sat on his shoulder with his mouth open in awe. “This story is for you both to understand what you are facing on this quest. You see before you nearly ten thousand years of history, and three thousand years of conflict with Mandalore. However, I want you both to understand that does not mean there is no hope for your Clan to bring Mandalore into a stronger future. For a member of a Clan who has such powers to heal should have a name worthy of a Jedi.”
Din reached up to his shoulder and picked up the Child to set him on Zaral’s desk. She reached out and placed her hand on his head.
“I name you, Tarre-Haal, the second of House Vizsla to be a Jedi warrior — and the first Jedi healer.”
Din also put his hand on Tarre-Haal, who cooed, but did not move.
Din whispered, “Ni kyr'tayl gai sa’ad,” I know your name as my child.
Zaral replied, “Gai bal manda,” Name and soul.
When Zaral and Din removed their hands Tarre looked up at them, and Din saw in his eyes a look that said, I’ll make you proud.
Din looked back up at Zaral, “You agree then, I should take him back to the Jedi? How am I to find them? Are they still on Coruscant?”
Zaral shook her head, “The Order was destroyed by the Emperor at the end of the Clone Wars. The fugitive Jedi were hunted during the Age of the Empire, and very few remain. However, I heard that it was two Jedi who returned the Dark Saber to House Wren before the Purge, and it was Bo-Katan of House Kryze who used it to unite Mandalore to resist the Empire, but ultimately failed.”
Din had not heard of the final events on Mandalore. “So House Kryze was destroyed.”
Zaral nodded, “And Bo-Katan murdered. Her nephew, Kor-Kayan, was captured and presumed dead. When the Empire fell the Governor and the Imperial Security Bureau were finally driven from the planet. And we began to rebuild.”
Din leaned forward. “Who murdered Bo-Katan?”
Zaral looked back at Din, “Moff Gideon.”
Din suddenly felt his breath leave him, and had to brace his hands on the desk. Tarre-Haal walked over to his father and put one hand on his arm, slowly closing his eyes.
Suddenly, Din felt a warmth spreading from his arm to his injured shoulder and up further to his head and down to his lungs. When he realized what was happening, he reached over to Tarre and placed a hand over the tiny one on his arm.
“Stop, please, Tarre. You have done enough, you need your strength.” He gently pulled the tiny hand off his arm and Tarre looked up at him with his large black eyes. “Save your strength.”
Din looked back to Zaral. “I am injured because I fought and killed Moff Gideon on Nevarro. His forces are in retreat as we speak.”
Zaral nodded. “Your entire Clan will be told of this victory.”
Din stood up again and looked her in the eye. “I will also return to that fight, but first, I must find the two Jedi. I must speak with House Wren.”

Ranking Rebels: Episodes 20-11
Tumblr media
It’s been several months now since Star Wars Rebels concluded and we learned the fates and futures of the surrogate family that lived in the halls of The Ghost. Rebellions were sparked. Sacrifices were made. There was a lot of critical theory about art. Fruit was stolen. Droids sang. Pufferpigs puffed. It made for a beautiful, if not always perfect, four year story that will become a cherished part of the Star Wars mythology.
With a new animated series on the horizon, what better time to take a look back at Rebels history. Not all episodes were created equal. For every, “World Between Worlds” there is a “Blood Sisters.” Just as I did for The Clone Wars, I plan to rank every episode of Star Wars Rebels from worst to best. As always, feedback and discussion is appreciated!
Previous Installments: 66-61, 60-51, 50-41, 40-31, 30-21
20. Flight of the Defender
youtube
Season four of Rebels saw the series at its most serialized and nowhere is this more evident than in “Flight of the Defender.” Rather than telling a self-contained narrative or theme, “Flight of the Defender” organically continues the plot threads building in previous episodes and forwards them while also introducing new key points such as the Lothwolves. It may not reach the creative heights of some of the series’ best but in terms of efficient storytelling, it may be some of the best work that the crew produced. The sound work by David Acord’s team is also stellar here with an incredible chase sequence that unfolds throughout the episode’s second act that its elevated greatly by its aural landscape.
19. Visions and Voices
youtube
Even more so than “Twin Suns,” “Visions and Voices” feels like a culmination of Maul’s character in both The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. His strange brotherly affection for Ezra leads to a connection that he hopes will lead to a direction in his now aimless life. In the process, he takes the young man to his dying home world of Dathomir. It connects all eras of the former Sith Lord’s life for a suitably creepy installment that not only furthers Ezra and Maul’s dynamic but also revives lingering lore elements from The Clone Wars.
18. A Call to Action
youtube
Even given the dramatic events of “Gathering Forces” much of Rebels still felt like it was playing in a safer playground than most Star Wars media. It was easy to see that the show targeted a younger audience with a sense of buoyant galactic adventure, and it had begun to do this well. However, Rebels, like most smart stories, knows the dangers of letting an audience feel safe, and “A Call to Action” smartly upends the first season’s status quo. Tarkin’s arrival signifies a danger that the Ghost Crew are not prepared for and brings with it deadly consequences for both Imperial and rebel alike. It culminates in a brilliantly tense standoff that leaves viewers waiting with baited breath for the closing of the season.
17. An Inside Man
youtube
While many viewers suspected that Kallus was the latest iteration of the Fulcrum moniker early into the third season, there is still a joyous irony in seeing Kanan and Ezra learn this truth. Watching Kallus switch from loyalist to dissenter makes for a fun character arc and smartly switches the relationship that the team holds with the Empire itself. Having this revelation occur in a tense undercover mission in the bowels of Thrawn’s Lothal factory makes for a quick moving and suspenseful episode. While it is far from the most consequential death the series would face, Thrawn’s murdering of Sumar marks a clear tonal shift in the competency and brutality of the Imperial military. Like Tarkin before him, Thrawn signifies a more calculated and less forgiving adversary and this would only grow as the series progressed.
16. Legacy of Mandalore
youtube
While it certainly could have used a bit more breathing room to fully come into its own, the long awaited reveal of Sabine’s family doesn’t disappoint. Following the emotional catharsis of “Trials of the Darksaber,” viewers knew going in that this would make for a tense family reunion. Writer Christopher Yost crafts a story that smartly pits Sabine’s loyalty to her family and them to her against the greater cultural and political rulings that have shaped their lives. It’s a rich storytelling landscape that feels fit to burst in a twenty two minute runtime. Even still, the final battle between Gar Saxon and his commandos against Clan Wren is a brilliantly staged set piece and Sabine’s lightsaber duel atop a frozen lake is even stronger.
15. Heroes of Mandalore
youtube
“Heroes of Mandalore” is a strange installment in that it almost feels like it belongs moreso as an epilogue to the series’ third season than a premiere of its fourth. Its plot is mostly self-contained and separate from much of the themes and arcs that would propel Rebels into its finale. That being said, taken on its own, “Heroes of Mandalore” works as a self-contained mini-movie that concludes Sabine’s long running character arc while also furthering the lore of the planet at its center. In the process, writers Henry Gilroy, Steven Melching, and Christopher Yost craft a story of planetary revolt, when to cede/take responsibility, and the importance of culture and the dangers of weaponizing it, into a sprawling and emotional forty four minute epic.
14. Kindred
youtube
On a basic level most fans will remember “Kindred” as the episode in which Kanan and Hera finally, finally, finally kiss. This moment, wonderfully voice acted by Freddie Prinze Jr and Vanessa Marshall is a tragic instance of emotional payoff that rewards fans for four years of patience. It feels melancholy, even at the time where Kanan’s ultimate fate was not yet known, but there’s a tenderness to it that carries through “Kindred” as a whole. Even with the wolves, the killer Noghri, and one of the most badass hyperspace jumps this side of Amilyn Holdo, “Kindred” is concerned with this found family of freedom fighters and just how they have come to trust and support one another, and that is what really makes this show special.
13. Zero Hour
youtube
After a full season of planning and plotting, Grand Admiral Thrawn finally conducts his masterstroke in “Zero Hour.” What follows is a tense, hour long fight for survival as Thrawn’s forces bare down on the scattered and outgunned rebel forces. Filled with great action, heroic sacrifices, and an ominous and deadly turn by Tom Baker’s Bendu, “Zero Hour” is an explosive finale to a season that ran the gamut in both quality and subject matter. While no major characters outside of Admiral Sato would fall, director Justin Ridge carries a feeling throughout that any character may fall to the pounding of turbolasers and the advancement of Imperial forces. While it may be the weakest of Rebels’ season cappers in how it lacks some of the hard hitting emotional moments or surprises that made those installments classic, “Zero Hour” still makes for a thrilling hour of television and a rewarding payoff for episodes of teasing.
12. A Fool’s Hope
youtube
With just one episode to follow it, “A Fool’s Hope” feels climactic from its first frame. Writers Henry Gilroy and Stephen Melching stage the entire twenty two minute run time like one long final stand against an encroaching Imperial army. The result can’t help but feel tense and directors Dave Filoni and Saul Ruiz play off this with an expertly employed digital camera that sweeps in and out of battle and shootouts. It creates a brilliant sense of scale and geography and makes for the best directed action of the series. Even if the plot surrounding this moment can’t help but feel a little predictable in comparison, it is in these explosive moments of heroism and sacrifice that “A Fool’s Hope” excels.
11. Shroud of Darkness
youtube
After several episodes of absence, Ahsoka Tano returns to Ezra and Kanan with the intent of finally doing some “Jedi business.” The three return to the temple on Lothal where each former and current apprentice is given a guiding vision toward their future. Ezra discusses just how to fight back against the oppression of the Sith with a projection of Yoda. Kanan faces down a former adversary and in the process gains his knighthood. And Ahsoka, poor Ahsoka, gets closer to learning a secret that threatens to tear her apart. Director Saul Ruiz does a strong job of grounding an episode that takes place almost entirely in a dreamlike plane, and in the process allows the character at its center to learn and grow. The results are great mix of ominous and rewarding and begin to lay the seeds for what would be an unforgettable finale.

Reflective Essay
I went onto Screenskills.com to do some research on the job roles in the Animation industry and wanted to make notes on which ones I was interested in and which are more suiting for me. There are various stages of the animation industry that I am interested in as well as certain parts I am less sure about in term of knowing if they are right for me. I wanted to break down the ones that catch my attention and discuss weather they are right for me. I have an idea of what I want to do but fro  creating my Ikigai, I realised that what I want to do isn't neccessarily the career that is realistic or can be a source of income for some one starting out their journey.
Director - The Director is the job I eventually want to end up with as I want to pitch and create my own project. It is the job of the Director to guide the project along and make sure that everyone working on it, writters, animators, story board artists etc. are on the same page and everyone can pull through with the Directors vision in mind. Being a Director is a challenging role and not one that is necessarily entery level as it requires expertise and knowledge in most areas of the project. It is also a role that is best suited for people who can be assertive and feel comfortable directing people and getting their point across to many people at once. This is not a strong point of mine so it is something I might have to over come if I plan on taking this direction.
Writer – Being a writer is also something I am interested in doing as I am eager to create the story for a project. However I don't find it something I would be required to take on as a job role are the Writer works closely with the Director to assure the vision is on track. Sometimes the Director is also the script writter or sometimes a co writer. The script writer in animation has to be more detailed than live action and has to convey a lot of the emotions for how the character will act as there is no actor to figure this out them selves. This is an asspect I never really considered before but it is obvious in retrospect. I don't think I want want to persue writing as my sole focus but I am interested in it a lot as I don't only want to create my own projects but I want to write them as well. This is something I wont focus on exclusively but I am still very much passionate about this role.
Concept Artist – Concept artists must be good at drawing rough but high quality artwork that is used to help the animators, character designers and other creative members onboard with an idea. These ideas are often changed and altered with many versions to get the ideas on paper for the first time. This requires the artist to be able to work fast and understand the vision of the project that the director has in mind. This is something I thought I had an interest in but I feel like my talents and interests lie in different areas.
Head of Story – The head of story is a person that works closely with the Director, story board artists and writers. This job involves getting the directors story out into a more visual form and helps sequence shots from story boards and the script. This seems like an inbetween of Director and story board artist and although I think this role seems great, I would rather be a writter, director or storyboard artist.
Storyboard Artist – Storyboarding is something that I have had an interest in and is a part of the project I love doing and have volunteered to do it in the past in group projects. A story board artist has to be good at drawing in different styles and being asked to revise their work to help fit the flow of the story. They must also have a good idea of what the project is about and what is achivable to display based on the animation style and the narrative. Story board artists dont tend to be working on the finer details but must be able to efficiantly display the composition of each shot or frame so they animators have a clear understanding of how the more polished animation would look.
This is an entry level job and a carreer that I am interested in getting involved in. I am good at laying out interesting shots and have had a lot of experience drawing comics in my spare time. I was also inspired by the talk we had with a storyboard artist called Alex Davy who showed us some of her work and gave us an insight to some of her work and ways in which we could enter the industry. This made me more sure that is was something I was interested in persuing and I feel like it is a carreer I would be comfortabe in.
Character Design – I enjoy creating characters a lot but looking into what skills a character designer needs to be good with I don't think it is neccessarily for me as a specific role. Character designers have to create the character design from notes, scripts and other information about the project and do research on fashion and time periods to then put together a design. They designer has to be skilled in drawing and had to understand the characters involvment in the production well so they character will fit. The deisnger often has to be good at modelling in 2D and 3D which is the part that turns me away as 3D modeling is not something I enjoy or am particualy great at.
Animator – The animator has an obvious role of animating the project but this is a deiiferent method depending on what type of animation it is. Different skill sets are needed for hand drawn to stop motion and to 3D animation. The type of animation I am most interested in is 2D traditional animation which is most offten done on specialist software and drawn on a tablet in the modern age. This is something I always want to learn and get better at. My initial aim was to learn to animate in this way the best I can and become a 2D animator but as I have done more work and research into roles I feel like my true passion lies in other roles. I still want to learn these skills as learning to animate is important for a lot of jobs in the animtion industry but actually animating isn't the specific carreer I want to follow.
Conclusion - After looking into a lot of my options I feel like I have a clearer idea of where I want to be but am split between where I want to be and what feels more realistic of a goal in the imidiate future. My goal in life is to create a project of my own and being the creative influence behind it. Inspirations like Dave Filoni, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko where all creators that made a series but took varying roles like director, writter, supervisor and other roles in between. This is the position I want to be in but that it a career that takes time to get to and isn't the sort of position that is easily come by as it is a competetive industry.
The Alex Davy talk really helped me realise how fun and interesting of a job story boarding can be and it is something I feel like I am already good at and am definitly doing a lot of. To get into this industry one important thing is to build up a portfolio of what you are capable of and prove your work is good enough. Building a website or putting your work on social media platforms is also a good way to get hired as it is giving emploeres a great way to see your work and what you are capable of.
She also talked about the Gesture Drawing with Alex Woo course she took which she claimed was something she did that made her start getting job offers a lot more often. This isn't a garunteed method of course but it is a course that I will potentially look into as it could help push me further into the industry.
Story boarding is also a job that will get me into the animation industry and could be used as a possible spring board to push my self higher and build up conections through networking to give my self more credibility. This could potentially help me reach my goal and if not, I would still be apart of the industry that I want to be apart of.

DISCLOSURE: I was invited by the Walt Disney Company to attend the 2019 D23 Expo, however all opinions and over-use of exclamation points are 100% my own. Also I purchased the Disney Plus Founders Circle, so I have put my money where my words are.
Disney Plus is making its debut at the 2019 D23 Expo, and the response to the new streaming service has been incredibly positive as excitement builds for its November 12, 2019, launch.
During its first-ever showcase presentation stars, directors, and writers filled the D23 Hall stage as announcements on new series in development were made and key details were revealed.
“With less than three months until launch, Disney+ will soon entertain and inspire audiences of all ages for generations to come, and we’re excited to preview some of the amazing original content being created for the service exclusively from our world-class brands today at the D23 Expo,” said Kevin Mayer, chairman, Direct-to-Consumer & International. “Storytelling is the cornerstone of The Walt Disney Company and we’re thrilled to unveil a new slate of original shows from the Star Wars and Marvel cinematic universes, along with popular television franchises set to return with all-new series streaming only on Disney+.”
With that in mind let’s look at ten of Disney Plus’ slate of originals from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic programs that I can’t wait to watch (in no particular order) with details from the 2019 D23 Presentation!!!!
Disney Plus Original Programs I Can’t Wait to Watch
Marvel Studios’ What If…?
For Marvel Studios’ “What If…?” Hayley Atwell was on hand to greet the audience. Atwell will voice Peggy Carter in Marvel Studios’ first animated series that focuses on different heroes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and imagines what would happen if the events in the films worked out differently.
Kevin Feige also introduced director Bryan Andrews and head writer Ashley Bradley to the crowd.
“What If…?” premieres on Disney+ in 2021.
Muppets Now
Forty years after leaving the swamp in his big screen debut in “The Muppet Movie,” Kermit the Frog is heading upstream with Miss Piggy, and the gang, bringing a new kind of mayhem and laughter to Disney+ with their first-ever unscripted short-form series, “Muppets Now.”
The Mandalorian
For Lucasfilm’s “The Mandalorian,” executive producers Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni joined series stars Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Carl Weathers and Giancarlo Esposito, along with Taika Waititi, who brings the droid IG-11 to life, to premiere the teaser trailer for the first Star Wars live-action series.
At the Disney Legends Awards Ceremony during the 2019 D23 Expo, Robert A. Iger, chairman and chief executive officer, The Walt Disney Company, announced that new Disney Legend Ming-Na Wen will join the cast of the series.
Set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order, “The Mandalorian” follows the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.
Wanda Vision
Stars Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen were on hand for their new series, Marvel Studios’ “WandaVision.” Bettany returns as Vision and Olsen as Wanda Maximoff—two super-powered beings living their ideal suburban lives who begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems.
Kevin Feige surprised the audience by bringing to the stage Kat Dennings and Randall Park who will reprise their roles from “Thor” and “Ant-Man and The Wasp,” and then he introduced Kathryn Hahn who has been cast as a new character in the series. Director Matt Shakman and head writer Jac Schaeffer joined everyone on stage to reveal that the streaming series will blend the style of classic sitcoms with Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“WandaVision” premieres on Disney+ in 2021.
The World According to Jeff Goldblum
Jeff Goldblum, who stars in and hosts “The World According to Jeff Goldblum” from National Geographic, gave fans a peek inside the series including a new trailer for the show. Through Goldblum’s always inquisitive and highly entertaining mind, nothing is as it seems in this new 12-episode series.
Forky Asks A Question
Tony Hale, who reprises his craft project turned toy role from “Toy Story 4” in the new collection of Pixar animated shorts “Forky Asks A Question,” premiered the first short (“What is Money?”).
In the 10 shorts, Forky explores important questions about how the world works, such as: What is love? What is time?
Noelle
“Noelle” stars Anna Kendrick and Billy Eichner joined Sean Bailey to announce their film will premiere on Disney+ on November 12 before sharing a new trailer. In the upcoming holiday comedy, Kris Kringle’s daughter is full of Christmas spirit and holiday fun, but wishes she could do something “important” like her beloved brother Nick, who will take over from their father this Christmas.
When Nick is about to crumble like a gingerbread cookie from all the pressure, Noelle suggests he take a break and get away…but when he doesn’t return, Noelle must find her brother and bring him back in time to save Christmas.
Untitled Cassian Andor Series
Photo by Jesse Grant/Getty Images for Disney
Stars Diego Luna and Alan Tudyk joined Kathleen Kennedy to introduce the audience to the second Lucasfilm live-action series for Disney+, which is now in development.
Both actors are reprising their roles from “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” and the stories follow Cassian Andor’s adventures as a rebel spy during the formative years of the Rebellion, before the events of “A New Hope.”
The Falcon and The Winter Soldier
Director Kari Skogland introduced Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan, the stars of Marvel Studios’ ”The Falcon and The Winter Soldier,” which finds Falcon and the Winter Soldier teaming up after “Avengers: Endgame.”
Emily VanCamp came on stage and Feige revealed that she will reprise her role as Sharon Carter.
Then, he introduced the crowd to Wyatt Russell who will play John Walker—a character from the comics coming to the screen for the first time.
Head writer Malcom Spellman was also on hand to greet the crowd.
“The Falcon and The Winter Soldier” will launch on Disney+ in 2020.
Monsters At Work
“Monsters At Work” stars Ben Feldman and Aisha Tyler unveiled the latest design of their characters Tylor and Millie. Inspired by Disney and Pixar’s Academy Award-winning feature film “Monsters, Inc.,” the new series from Disney Television Animation returns to Monstropolis and follows a new cast of monsters with special appearances from Mike and Sulley (voiced by Billy Crystal and John Goodman).
And I mean I can’t not have an honorable mention for just one more…
Ewan McGregor made a surprise appearance to announce his return as Obi-Wan Kenobi in a new untitled series from Lucasfilm.

Dave Filoni Quote about how Lucas felt about the Expanded Universe on video.
There is a quote that has been going around for a bit now, that I found the original source of. He said during an interview on “The Star Wars show”. There is a part of the quote that isn’t in it how it has been written, I can see why they left it out because you can’t quite understand it’s significance unless you actually see Filoni say it, his facial expression and his body language. The quote as written now is -
Tumblr media
When I saw the video I noticed this small part of the quote that wasn’t included, it doesn’t change the message of it, it actually makes it more meaningful. The entire quote with the previously left out part is -
"There's this notion that everything changed when everything became Legends. And I can see why people think that. But, you know, having worked with George I can tell you that it was always very clear -- and he made it very clear -- that the films and the TV shows were the only things that he considered Canon. That was it.*
"So everything else was a world of fun ideas, exciting characters, great possibilities, the EU was created to explore all those things.  And I know and I fully respect peoples opinions about it that some of the material said 'the next canon part of it' <wink,wink>.... But from the filmmaking world I was brought into, the films and TV shows were it". ~ Dave Filoni speaking about working with George Lucas
--------------------------------------------------
Explanation -
[The 'wink, wink' part of it, you can't fully understand it unless you see the video and see Filoni's face and his body language, what he’s indicating here was essentially saying, yeah, Lucas Licensing did try and fool people and they outright lied at times, they were concerned that if people knew that the EU was literally a separate universe and not canon, that they would be less likely to spend money on it, because 'it didn't count'. ]
This is the actual video of when Dave Filoni said the above quotes during an interview on 'The Star Wars show' [41.40 mark] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcNXPNXOv2A&t=16s
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Leland Chee and Howard Roffman, they both acknowledge that wasn't true, and have made public quoted statements in that regard. After the fact tho. Leland Chee didn’t get caught lieing to 2012. And most of his ‘atonement’ statements they came years later.
Roffman didn't keep his part of the deal with Lucas, who insisted that the only way he would allow the EU to exist at all was in a completely separate parallel universe to his, which ironically enough was Roffman's suggestion because at first Lucas said "Stop right there, there is no way I am letting anyone else say what is and isn't Star Wars', so that was how Roffman made the deal. Roffman tried to convince in subsequent talks to make it all one universe, but Lucas was adamantly against it and he adamantly refused. He gave them a seperate sandbox to play in and this is exactly why you see the things Lucas was saying and the things Leland Chee were saying were incompatible. - That's also the reason they stopped using the term 'canon' and  only used 'continuity' trying to make it out like they meant the same thing, when they didn't. This was their duplicity, not George Lucas, Lucas was always honest about whenever he was asked in interviews. Separate universes.
Roffman comes totally clean about it in an 2017 interview about the whole thing. Which I have mentioned in two of my previous posts and promosed to share. Now is a good time to do that as it will help make sense of this part of what Filoni said.
Why did Lucas allow to go on than? Fair question. 3 reasons.
One, he told them from the get go he didn’t want to have to get involved all the time, he had his own projects and stories to work on, and he didn’t want to have to keep looking over their shoulders.
Two - He knew he couldn’t keep up with the fans hunger for new Star Wars and he thought this would keep them occupied in between his movies, bare in mind, he didn’t have any clue how big it would actually get. No one was expecting how good it would end up doing in terms of making money.
Which segways very nicely into the Third and final reason.
Money.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lucas wasn’t about to deal with their duplicity by hurting himself on the process. He was making so much money off it, and he didn’t write a word of it, you can expect anyone to be that ‘upstanding’ so to speak. So he decided he’d handle it the same way they were, by making public statements, and than let them have to deal with the fallout because Lucas was being honest anyways, it was them who were doing wrong.
"And now there have been novels about the events after Episode VI, which isn't at all what I would have done with it. The Star Wars story is really the tragedy of Darth Vader. That is the story. Once Vader dies, he doesn't come back to life, the Emperor doesn't get cloned and Luke doesn't get married..."
~ George Lucas, Flannelled One, 2008
https://ibb.co/dtnYHbx
[Quotes like this were problematic, because if as they were saying “It was one universe” “One canon”, than how the hell could Lucas say The Emperor doesn’t get cloned and doesn’t get married??” heh]
-----------
”The novels and comic books are other authors' interpretations of my creation.  Sometimes, I tell them what they can and cant do, but I just don't have the time to read them all. They're not my vision of what Star Wars is.”
- George Lucas 2004
-------------
"I like to refer to the Interview with Lucas in the Special Editions. When asked about the novels and what not, he simply says:
”Those are another author's interpretation of what I've created, and not to be taken seriously, as far as what is really going on in the Star Wars world.”
~ George Lucas
[These are statements being made in response to live interviewers questions, so as you can see, this is how he dealt with it and let them deal with the fall out.]
-----------------
Back to the Filoni quote discussion -
Roffman admits later on that it was separate universes, Lucas did not consider the EU canon ever. Lucas just wasn't interested in it, he was only interested in his Star Wars. That's why there was so many retcons. It was all Lucas.
[I’ll be sharing the quotes from Roffman’s 2017 interview following this. This just helps set it up and bring it all together]
----------------
Not suggesting Lucas did anything wrong, he didn’t, he made it clear from the get go that was the only way he would allow it. It also makes some of the other Quotes from Lucas even more understandable than they already were.
Just for context and reminders -
STARLOG: "The Star Wars Universe is so large and diverse. Do you ever find yourself confused by the subsidiary material that's in the novels, comics, and other offshoots?"
"I don't read that stuff. I haven't read any of the novels. I don't know anything about that world. That's a different world than my world.... When I said [other people] could make their own Star Wars stories, we decided that, like Star Trek, we would have two universes: My universe and then this other one. They try to make their universe as consistent with mine as possible, but obviously they get enthusiastic and want to go off in other directions.
“There are two worlds here,” explained Lucas. “There’s my world, which is the movies, and there’s this other world that has been created, which I say is the parallel universe – the licensing world of the books, games and comics.”
[The things that happened in the Expanded Universe happened in the Expanded Universe universe, but they didn't happen in George Lucas' universe. The things that happened in George Lucas universe, They all happened in the Expanded Universe' universe. That was part of the deal, they had to have all of his stuff happen there exactly the same. If that conflicted with things they did before or after, didn't matter, they had to change anything that contradicted anything he did. [Retcons].]
--------------------------
"Q: What do you think of the Expanded Universe of books?
A: "The books are in a different universe. I've not read any of them, and I told them when they started writing I wouldn't read any of them and I blocked out certain periods [they couldn't touch where the real story happens]."
- George Lucas 2003
----------------
"The question selected from The Furry Conflict poll was: How much does the Expanded Universe influence the movies?
As I asked him, Lucas leaned back a moment and said to me “Very little.” When he first had agreed to let people write Expanded Universe books, he had said “I’m not gonna read ‘em” and it was a “different universe” and that he wanted to keep away from the time period of his saga. He jokingly complained, however, that now when he writes a script he has to look through an encyclopedia to make sure that a name he comes up with doesn’t come too close to something in the EU.He later commented that the future of Star Wars may lie in other venues outside of feature film."
- "Marc Xavier", November 2003, "The Furry Conflict and the Great ‘Beard‘ of the Galaxy"
(report based on a Q&A session with George Lucas which occurred at USC on 11-19-03)
---------------
"Howard Roffman [President of Lucas Licensing], He once said to me that there are two Star Trek universes: there's the TV show and then there's all the spin-offs. He said that these were completely different and didn't have anything to do with each other. So I said, "OK, go ahead."
- George Lucas 2008
-----
When Lucas use the term “We decided”, “we would have two universes”, he was referring to himself and Roffman and the deal with Roffman mentioned here in this above quote.
The Expanded Universe was Howard Roffman’s idea, he brought the idea to Lucas. He was in charge of it the entire time Lucas owned Star Wars.
-----------------------
Now it makes why Lucas hated Mara Jade so much understandable. Lucas wasn’t involved in their stories. He didn’t approve concepts, he didn’t read the books, he didn’t deal with the book people personally, he had a liaison group.
“Well in George, George couldn’t stand Mara Jade, well he just couldn’t stand, couldn’t deal and they went out and got some sort of person who looked like she’d stepped out of a Cosmopolitan to be the model Mara and he just thought the whole thing was so not Star Wars and not his vision of Star Wars and once, I forget, I think Sue Rostoni between the novels told me or anyway told me they were killing off Mara Jade and I said ‘Do I get to tell George?'”
– J.W. Rinzler, Lucas Licensing and Author
http://starwarshub.net/2019/02/01/according-to-author-j-w-rinzler-george-lucas-couldnt-stand-the-character-of-mara-jade/
-----------------
As far as I know, George Lucas himself is not involved. He has a liaison group that deals with the book people, the game people, etc. They do the day-to-day work. Occasionally, he will be asked a question and will give an answer."
~ Timothy Zahn
---------------------------
"George knows more about Star Wars than we do. He doesn't see the Expanded Universe as ”his” Star Wars, but as ”ours.” I think this has been mentioned previously, maybe in other places, but it's not new info, as far as I remember."
~ Sue Rostoni, Lucas Licensing (LLP Managing Editor),2004
-------------
[This was when Leland Chee got caught lieing during a live interview from an Audience member question in 2012 ]
But just to give the context of how widespread this deceit and outright lieing had gotten to let’s look at the kinds of things Leland Chee had been saying for years first, and this is just the tip of the iceberg -
"The thing about Star Wars is that there's One universe..." ~ Leland Chee 2008
--
"Holocronkeeper does not support the notion of SW parallel universes."
~ Leland Chee 2009
--
"Everything outside the films was collectively known as the Expanded Universe, serving as an extension of the same universe in the films."
~ Leland Chee 2012
[Even though Lucas had said in 2011, that he makes no distinction between the movies and the Clone Wars series.]
"This is Star Wars, and I don't make a distinction between [The Clone Wars] series and the films."~ George Lucas, SciFiNow, October 2011
-----------------
"Unlike other franchises that reboot with almost every incarnation, Star Wars has proven itself to be a singular universe."
~ Leland Chee 2012
[Bare in mind that Lucas ruled by decree and anything he said was instantly canonical anything that might contradict it, was nulled and voided on the spot, also, note the year on these last two quotes, 2012]
Now watch this...
Q “Hi Mr Chee! Many thanks!”
"The dual universe question comes up often. I know George Lucas has mentioned it being two universes , but that’s not how I see it. His vision is definitely not beholden to ours, but ours is definitely beholden to his."
~ Leland Chee 2012
Same year, 2012. The last quote above he made one month before getting caught and admitting that Lucas said it was two universes.
It gets worse.
Knowing full well that Lucas had said it was two universes, Leland Chee had said this -
"And then there's the very top level of canon, the inviolable, infallible level of Truth, marked GWL—George Walton Lucas. It's the divine word of the Creator who stands outside his universe and is not subject to the rules that govern it."
~ Leland Chee, 2008
[Actually, Leland was standing outside of his Universe.]
and this
"George's view of the universe is his view," Chee says with a slightly grudging tone. "He's not beholden to what's gone before."
~ Leland Chee 2008
grudging means he was pissed and he resented it.
[Lucas said in 2005 it was two universes in a magazine interview. Wasn’t the only time he said it either]
You wanna see this get even worse?
*"The G/C/S-level canon stuff is a construct specifically for the Holocron. Non-Holocron users would have no idea what this stuff even means* and I would say most of the people who use the Holocron don't use the field, instead looking specifically to the source of the material. Individual entries are not broken down by canon level."
~ Leland Chee 2005
"...applies only to the Holocron, but is not the same as their standing in LFL's canon hierarchy.“
---
“Understand, that the Holocron's primary purpose is to keep track of Star Wars continuity for Lucas Licensing, and to some degree Lucas Online. To my knowledge, it is only rarely used for production purposes.“
~ Leland Chee
[What this means is that whole 'canon tier' he made up, that wasn't policy that was a filing system protocol for the Holocron like the Dewy Decimal system. It had no baring on actual canon or anything outside of his office.]
~ Leland Chee
-------------------------
Wanna see it get even worse?
"Star Wars continuity, even EU continuity, does not rest on my shoulders. With regard to the the films and The Clone Wars, I am not involved in continuity approvals* though I have often been asked to provide reference material."
~ Leland Chee
[And they would have us believe that George Lucas let them do all of this on their own, and he had no say in any of it. He’s letting them say what is canon carte’ blanche’ They did say that, wanna see what Leland also said about declaring things canon?
Lucas is quoted as saying they don’t follow his guidelines.
-
This one’s the dozy.
As far as LucasBooks and Lucas Licensing are concerned, of course it is. LucasBooks and Lucas Licensing hold sway over the content and storylines of the Expanded Universe, and thus have every right to declare a canon of those materials. Whether this internal declaration is subscribed to by parent company LFL or Lucas himself is another matter, one which, though interesting, is outside the scope of this Holocron-oriented thread.
~ Leland Chee 2004
----
This is exactly what Dave Filoni is referring to. Them declaring certain things canon and writting on some [it wasn’t all, just to be fair, just some] EU products that their story is a canon continuation, and they were doing so without permission from parent company and George Lucas.
It get’s worse. heh
Turns out, Mr. Leland Chee, he never met George Lucas, he never spoke to George Lucas, not even on the telephone, not even by mail. Complete and total strangers.
"I didn't have any direct contact with George about Star Wars. - I would see some notes based on the interviews or the meetings. But I did not have direct contact with George about Star Wars continuity."
~  Leland Chee 2018
“I did not have direct contact with George about Star Wars continuity. Dave Filoni, who worked on Clone Wars, definitely did. So for me, the spirit of George’s work is what’s in the films, and it doesn’t go too far beyond that.” ~ Leland Chee 2018
---
Only took him about 4 or 5 years to fully come clean
"What George did with the films and The Clone Wars was pretty much *his universe ,” Chee said. “He didn’t really have that much concern for what we were doing in the books and games. So the Expanded Universe was very much separate."
~ Leland Chee, 2017 - SYFY WIRE
------------------
“Lucas’ canon – and when I say ‘his canon’, I’m talking about what he was doing in the films and what he was doing inThe Clone Wars* – was hugely important. But what we were doing in *the books really wasn’t on his radar.”
~ Leland Chee, 2018
-----------
And to top it all off, he said
"Dave Filoni is better equipped to relay Lucas’ true feelings about the EU." ~ Leland Chee
So every single on of those things he said about it being ‘One Universe’, One Continuity’, ‘A singular universe’, ‘same universe as the films’, ‘what is canon’, what’s continuity’, all of it, he did so without having a clue with how George Lucas felt.
But wait....there’s even a problem with that.....when he said Dave Filoni is the one to relay about Lucas’ true feelings, which is is in part true, it doesn’t take into account the fact that he did know Lucas said it was two universes.
He says G-Canon -
G-canon was George Lucas Canon; the six Episodes and any statements by George Lucas (including unpublished production notes from him or his production department that are never seen by the public).
Given the fact that he is the only who made that Tier thingy  for the Holocron, I’m kinda guessing he knew that statements from Lucas were canonical.
He heard Lucas say it was two universes, should we really assume all the other quotes from Lucas he never heard them?
Not only did Leland Chee lie, he knew full well what George Lucas was saying and it’s significance and it’s canonicity.
He’s not only a liar, he’s literally a canon breaker.
Leland Chee said Dave Filoni could tell us Lucas true feelings on the EU.
Which brings us right back to where this post started.
"There's this notion that everything changed when everything became Legends. And I can see why people think that. But, you know, having worked with George I can tell you that it was always very clear -- and he made it very clear -- that the films and the TV shows were the only things that he considered Canon. That was it.*"So everything else was a world of fun ideas, exciting characters, great possibilities, the EU was created to explore all those things. And I know and I fully respect peoples opinions about it that some of the material said 'the next canon part of it' <wink,wink>.... But from the filmmaking world I was brought into, *the films and TV shows were it".* ~ Dave Filoni speaking about working with George Lucas
He was talking about Leland Chee and Howard Roffman, They both knew the truth of it. They had co-workers who wouldn’t agree with them on what they were saying because they refused to lie about George Lucas.
"Within the issue of Starlog magazine with the War of the Worlds cover is an interview article with George Lucas. He stated something which he had said before, which is that he doesn't follow the SW EU, he doesn't read the books or comics. He also said that when they started doing all this (which is allowing other storytellers to tell their own SW tales), he had decreed that the Star Wars Universe would be split into two just like Star Trek (I don't know nuts about Star Trek, so don't ask me about that), one would be his own universe (the six episode movie saga), the other would be a whole other universe (the Expanded Universe). He continued to say that the EU tries as much as possible to tie in to his own universe, but sometimes they move into a whole other line of their own."
~ Confirmed by Sue Rostoni, Lucas Licensing Publishing, 2005
--
"Does the main storyline for books and comics go through Lucas to make sure it isn't going to conflict with future movies?
No. George doesn't give us much information about his future movies until he's making them. In general, George does not take the EU into account when he's making his movies.”
~ Sue Rostoni, LucasBooks/LL Managing Editor, 2003
--
"I know that GL doens't create the storys and concepts for the SW novels, but does anyone know if he approves overall story ideas?
"George doesn't see the overall story ideas or concepts. If there is a sensitive area, or if we are developing backstory for a character he's created or mentioned in an interview, we can query him to get more information, his approval, or whatever. And yes, we always query him if we're doing something drastic to a film character. I believe he does read the concepts for the games though."
- Sue Rostoni, Lucas Licensing (LLP Managing Editor), Jun 2004
---
"The books have to follow the same continuity the films do, as they are an integral part of the overall story of Star Wars that Lucasfilm LTD. recognizes as a legitimate continuation of the films, right?
Yes, the books follow the continuity of the films as best we can taking into account that George follows his own continuity, and rightly so. He's the filmmaker.
As far as ”legitimate continuation of the films” -- If George had continued making SW films past Return of the Jedi, I don't think they would have reflected what the SW authors have written.
[This proved to be true. Lucas wrote his own Sequel Trilogy in 2011. The EU did not exist in his sequel trilogy. He was already in pre-production for the movies himself before he sold to Disney.
"Fast forward to 2012, when we hear George is looking to make SW movies again, I thought 'I wonder what next Mon Calamari's gonna be.' And it turns out, the Mon Calamari this time was huge swaths of the EU. There was no Jacen, no Jaina. No new Jedi Order. Chewie lived. Not suprising, but there it was.
~ Pablo Hidalgo, 2016, speaking on Lucas' ST treatments he wrote in 2011 https://ibb.co/nmjWcBM
He said it was not suprising because he had know forever already that it was two seperate universes and Lucas did not consider the EU canon ever.
"In the old days, George Lucas saw his universe as separate from publishing [EU]. He wasn't at all interested in connecting."
~ Pablo Hidalgo [Lucasfilm Story Group] 2016 http://i.imgur.com/6ZOkAau.png
"He [Lucas] only considers his movies and TV projects as his universe, and told the Clone Wars writers to only worry about those."

[We know a lot about Lucas Sequel Trilogynow. Links to that at bottom.]
Sue R Quote continued...
The books, comics, etc., are a ”legitimate continuation” of the Star Wars saga as we [Lucas Licensing] define it. I'm not certain of the context of your question -- somehow I feel like I'm walking into something here...."
- Sue Rostoni, Lucas Licensing (LLP Managing Editor), Jan 2005
----
[At first Sue Rostoni was lead to believe what Chee and Roffman were saying was the case, but she found out that that wasn’t true, and she had met Lucas and she had been working at Lucas Licensing longer than anyone, and she refused to take part in any duplicity especially when it came to Lucas himself. She was a real class act and I have a ton of respect her. That couldn’t have been easy for her. She retired in 2011]

So there we have it. So many things going on behind the scenes, so much misinformation on the internet, so many people lieing as it suits their personal wants and narratives.
This is about one thing for me and one thing only. Honoring the gift George Lucas gave us all, Star Wars.
I want his legend and legacy remembered truthfully and for what it really was.
His words matter. When it comes to Star Wars Lucas is God.
