Qotd: what are you reading in November? . As the winter turns colder I like to cozy up with some mystery books. What could be better than this one? I plan to get unrepentantly nosy when I’m older... . Jane Darrowfield is using her retirement years to work as a professional busybody, with most of her business coming from her West Cambridge, Massachusetts, community. This time her client is right next door… Megan, who’s purchased the house next to Jane’s, needs some help from her snooping neighbor. Megan’s been having blackouts, hearing voices—and feeling like someone’s following her. Are these symptoms of an illness—or signs that she’s in danger? Considering the extensive security system in Megan’s house, it seems like she should be safe—yet she soon vanishes into thin air. Some think she’s run away, but would this ambitious young lawyer on the partner track really miss a meeting with an important client? And where’s Megan’s cat? The mystery is about to deepen when the cat is finally located in a hidden panic room—and as Jane and the police look into Megan’s friends, family, and past, it may be time to sound the alarm… . @kensingtonbooks @maineclambake #BarbaraRoss #JaneDarrowfieldandtheMadwomanNextDoor #BNexclusive #cozymystery @tlcbooktours #bookstagram #bookblog #booklover #booknerdigans #bookstagrammer #booklover #picoftheday #photooftheday #pictureoftheday #instagood #mystery #currentlyreading #tbr #reading #amreading #bookcommunity #booksbooksbooks #bookworm #bookish (at Columbus, Ohio) https://www.instagram.com/p/CHQCUedALVg/?igshid=ir5wllptlm9k

It’s Monday!  What Are You Reading? #71
Tumblr media
It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week.  It’s a great post to organise yourself. It’s an opportunity to visit and comment, and er… add to that ever growing TBR pile! So welcome in everyone. This meme started with J Kaye’s Blog   and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date. And here we are!
What Did I Read This Last Week?
Tumblr media
Siren’s Song by Karen Chance
#4.5 Dorina Basarab
Urban Fantasy
This is the flip side of the Dragon’s Claw story with Dory as the narrator.  Now, we get John Pritkin narrating his side of the action-packed excitement that hit magical Hong Kong interspersed with dips into his past that I loved.
Tumblr media
The Trouble With Tigers by Gail Koger
#2 Shenanigans
Urban Fantasy
She talks to the animals, she rescues the animals, and now she’s taking on terrorists and convincing her parents that her new love interest should remain healthy and intact.  Fun times!
Tumblr media
Witch Way Home by Danielle Garrett
#4 Beechwood Harbor Magic Mystery
Paranormal Cozy Mystery
On trial to get back her reputation, her potion’s license, and now her big break is blown up by murder.  Another entertaining time with Holly and the gang.
Tumblr media
Snowed in at Hartfield by Maria Grace
Historical Romance, Austenesque
Clever and sweet this romance brings together three Austen novel sequels in one- P&P, Emma, and Persuasion- when several of the characters come together during a snowstorm at Hartfield and the Colonel and Miss Elliott have more than snow on the mind.
Tumblr media
Betwixt By Danielle Garrett
A Beechwood Harbor Collection
Paranormal Cozy Mysteries
This collection brings together several short stories and novellas from both Beechwood Harbor series.  Some are holiday-themed and a few are prequels/origin stories.  I had a good time reading each one.
Tumblr media
Haunted House Murder by Leslie Meier, Lee Hollis, and Barbara Ross
Cozy Mysteries
#25.7 Lucy Stone Mystery, #.5 Hailey Powell, #7.5 Maine Clambake mystery
Three novella-length standalone cozies with a Halloween theme.  The Maine Clambake story was the best with characters, setting, and development though the others weren’t bad.
Tumblr media
Bakeshop at Pumpkin and Spice by Donna Kauffman, Allyson Charles, and Kate Angell
Contemporary Romance, Holiday
All three stories centered around the bakeshop where magical cookies helped people find true love.  All three stories were sweet, but the last was just the right amount of development in a friends to lovers romance.
WHAT AM I READING NOW?
Tumblr media
Lucky Witch by Danielle Garrett
#5 Beechwood Harbor Magic Mystery
Cozy Mystery
WHAT WILL I READ NEXT?
Tumblr media
The Giver of Stars by JoJo Moyes
Historical Fiction

Looking for a charming cozy mystery? #partner Well here you go! Jane Darrowfield, Professional Busybody by Barbara Ross is the first in a new series. Read on to learn about this fun new character. Now on instatour with @tlcbooktours . Jane Darrowfield is a year into her retirement, and she’s already traveled and planted a garden. She’s organized her photos, her recipes, and her spices. The statistics suggest she has at least a few more decades ahead of her, so she better find something to do . . . After Jane helps a friend with a sticky personal problem, word starts to spread around her bridge club—and then around all of West Cambridge, Massachusetts—that she’s the go-to girl for situations that need discreet fixing. Soon she has her first paid assignment—the director of a 55-and-over condo community needs her to  de-escalate hostilities among the residents. As Jane discovers after moving in for her undercover assignment, the mature set can be as immature as any high schoolers, and war is breaking out between cliques. It seems she might make some progress—until one of the aging “popular kids” is bludgeoned to death with a golf club. And though the automatic sprinklers have washed away much of the evidence, Jane’s on course to find out whodunit . . . . . Serving up mouthwatering shellfish, the Snowden Family Clambake has become a beloved institution in Busman’s Harbor, Maine. But when new clues rise to the surface five years after the disappearance of Julia Snowden’s mother’s friend, the family business shifts to sleuthing . . . Julia and her mother, Jacqueline, have come to the exclusive summer colony of Chipmunk Island to attend a memorial service for Jacqueline’s old friend Ginny, who’s been officially declared dead half a decade after she went out for her daily swim in the harbor and was never seen again. But something seems fishy at the service—especially with the ladies of the Wednesday Club. As Julia and Jacqueline begin looking into Ginny’s cold case, a present-day murder stirs the pot, and mother and daughter must dive into the deep end to get to the bottom of both mysteries . . . Dollycas's Thoughts We are back in Busman’s Harbor, Maine where the Snowden Family Clambake on Morrow Island is a must-attend event when visiting the area. Julia and her mother Jaqueline have become summer residents of the island after a huge renovation of the mansion. It now has so many new possibilities for the family business. Another island nearby is Chipmuck Island. A place where Jacqueline spent a lot of time with her friend Ginny while was growing up. Ginny still summered there but with the clambake and her family Jacqueline and Ginny lost touch. Five years ago, Ginny went out for her daily swim in the harbor but never returned. A body was never found and now after all this time, Ginny has been declared dead. The summer residents of Chipmuck Island are having a memorial service for her and Jacqueline has asked Julia to go with her. The event was led by the women of the Wednesday Club, a group Ginny belonged to, but something about the whole service felt off to Jacqueline and Ginny's house was wrong too. Walls had been painted and furnishings had been moved. Julia and her mom start investigating Ginny's case and asking a lot of questions. When another resident of Chipmuck Island is murdered they turn up the heat on their investigation to find the truth before anyone else ends up dead. I love returning to Busman's Harbor with each new installment of this series. It is as if you can just pull up a chair on the beach and relax and enjoy whatever Julia and her family get involved in. With this 11th story, I need to plant me and my chair on a different beach though and Jacqueline is playing a larger role. Both Julia and her mom are strong women with huge hearts and curious natures. Reconnecting with the Wednesday Club and introducing them to Julia set up this very interesting story. The author created a complicated group of women and we even get to know some of their families. It isn't easy to add a big group like this for one book and give the characters enough depth to be more than just background characters but Ms. Ross did a wonderful job. The mystery was unique. I loved the way Julia and her mom worked together. There is also a surprising caretaker of Chipmuck Island that helps with the case. And when Julia brings her theories to the police they know they better listen. With several twists and secrets revealed over the course of the book, it becomes very difficult to put the book down. I had some theories of my own but I soon saw I was on the wrong track and needed to just sit back and let Julia do the work. I was surprised by the way the story twisted for a big reveal and saddened too. I enjoyed the varied subplots interwoven with the main plotline. They allowed readers to catch up with all the characters we have come to love. Jacqueline has another huge thing to deal with in addition to getting justice for her friend. Julia has an awakening of her own and another character has decided it is time to take their life in a new direction. We learn in the acknowledgments that The Wednesday Club evolved from a group the author's mother had belonged to since the 1960s that may still exist today. She has a treasure of her mom's from her time in the group. The premise was fascinating but would be a little too intense for most women today. Give me a topic or a book and I am all up for a discussion but researching the topic in depth would not be my thing. Of course, I am all in on the eats, treats, and beverages served at the meetings. Hidden Beneath was a marvelous read. A cast of characters that are like old friends and a top-notch mystery, set in a perfect summer place. I was totally entertained. The author has whet my appetite for Book 12 with the final paragraphs of this book. Until my next visit to Busmaan's Harbor . . . I hope we don't have to wait too long.

Shucked Apart by Barbara Ross was a well thought out mystery. This book was "meatier" than your average cozy mystery. Ms. Ross did her research for this book and it shows. I enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it.

Barbara Ross's Jane Darrowfield, Professional Busybody (Jane Darrowfield#1) was an interesting cozy mystery/whodunit.  Jane has a reputation as a fixer among her friends.  An administrator for a senior condo community approaches Jane about helping him at his facility.  When Jane temporarily moves to the community she soon sees the problem.  The residents belong to different cliques and there is friction between two of them that is steadily escalating. One of the main leaders/instigators is found murdered soon after Jane moves in.  Meanwhile, Jane is also called on to meet some older men from a dating website for a friend and she reluctantly agrees. A fast paced, multi-faceted story with amateur sleuths, romance, suspicions, unlikely partners and plenty of good old fashioned "busybodiness".
